News@8pm: iPhone 5 specs leak and 4G headed to the UK Posted: 22 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.
Spring is here and iPhone 5 specs are inevitably the talk of the town. Besides our own exclusive images showing that there might well be white and silver iPhone 5s The China Times has also been hinting at some rather insider information although as usual it must be taken with a generous serving of salt. Hot items on the list are a larger 4 inch display, NFC chip technology and a metal housing. If this is true it will mark the most major change to the form factor of the iPhone since its introduction in 2007. Whilst reports suggest that you might have to wait until September or even later for the iPhone, a recent spotting of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 8.9 at CTIA indicate that we won't have to wait much longer to hear about that device. It looks a great deal like its older brother and an earlier snap of the spec sheet suggests that this will be a decent entry into the tablet market. Lets just not mention the massive elephant in the room hey? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Expect to wait just a little bit longer than planned if you were one of those hoping to be clutching an iPad 2 in your loving embrace at 9am this friday. Despite Apple's flagship London store confirming just this morning that the stocks would be in place by 9am, Friday, Apple has issued a press release indicating that the iPad 2 will not be available in Apple stores until 5pm. So it looks like the line campers will have to scrap the "maintenance work on the tube" excuse and take off the whole day. Those of you not tempted by Apple's shiny new offering and choosing to cast your gaze over less trodden pastures will be pleased to hear that the Blackberry Playbook is one step closer to market. Although still no word on a release date, the Playbook has gone up for pre-order in the US at $500 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model. We'll see if the Playbook can do enough to keep itself above water in the frenzy surrounding the iPad 2 launch.
Amazon in trouble on the opening day of its Appstore. The service which will be competing against Google's own Android Market has already attracted the attention of Apple's lawyers who dislike the uncanny similarity between Appstore and App Store. Despite this Amazon steamed straight ahead andlaunched the Appstore in the US anyway alongside a free copy of Angry Birds Rio for allcomers.. If only the Apple Lawyers could be as easily charmed by a free Android app. If you're looking for a new phone on which to enjoy the Playstation Suite we told you about yesterday, then look no further than Vodafone - the mobile network has thrown up a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play pre-order page. If you haven't seen the new ads for the phone starring Kristen Schaal then check them out, they're sure to make your day roughly 25% more strange. Ofcom sparked hope in the hearts of UK speed freaks with promises that in 2012 they will finally get the ball rolling on 4G networks in our forgotten isles. Whilst on the face of it this seems like fantastic news, there is a bitter taste left in the mouths of mobile users who remember when the US kickstarted its own 4G network rollout all the way back in the misty, forgotten days of 2008. Ofcom claims that through the use of caps it has ensured that the 2012 spectrum auction will maintain balanced competition in the mobile industry. Those wondering what took so long can blame the prolonged analogue to digital TV switchover which will eventually clear space for the 4G bands. Whilst Ofcom awaits the finalisation of the TV switchover, car-maker Ford is eagerly preparing for the radio switchover to digital scheduled for 2015. Even with almost four years left on the clock Ford is taking the role of teacher's pet of the car industry and ensuring that all Ford cars will have DAB radios as standard by the end of 2012.

iPhone 5 specs to see 4-inch display and metal casing Posted: 22 Mar 2011 08:28 AM PDT Next-gen Apple handset to tout bevy of new features Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 is to launch sporting a larger 4-inch display, a new metal casing and NFC chip technology, a report by the China Times has revealed.
Adding fuel to the fire that Apple’s next-gen smartphone will land with a larger display and a scratch-resistant metal-backed housing that will tout the antenna in the rear-mounted Apple logo, the Chinese newspaper has reinstated speculation that the fruity tech company will include the contactless payment tech despite recent reports to the contrary.
Yo-yoing in and out of the iPhone 5’s mooted spec sheet, NFC tech has been given the nod by the China Times with backing also handed out to the inclusion of a recently leaked metal backing to the device with a logo-mounted antenna believed to be Apple’s solution to the antennagate issues that plagued the release of the iPhone 5’s predecessor.
What features and specs would you most like to see land on the Apple iPhone 5 when it launches later this year? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 photos leak ahead of launch Posted: 22 Mar 2011 07:59 AM PDT 8.9-inch Samsung tablet caught in the wild hours before unveiling The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has appeared in a number of spy shots caught at CTIA just hours ahead of its official unveiling.
Having been teased by Samsung themselves in a tantalising preview video last week, gadget blog PocketLint has caught the imminent 8.9-inch device out in the wild with a series of snaps revealing the form factor and design of the latest edition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab family.
Earlier today a snap of the device’s spec sheet revealed the 8.9-inch tablet will come with a 1200 x 800p resolution display, 1GHz processor and Google’s tablet-centric Android OS, Honeycomb. Lining up at a mere 8.6mm thick and 470g in weight, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is to measure up slimmer and considerably lighter than the Apple iPad 2 that is to launch in the UK this Friday.
Saving seemingly nothing for the official unveiling it has also been reported that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will feature a new Samsung UX that includes a ‘Live Panels’ UI, app switching using a ‘Mini App Tray’ feature and custom widgets.
Can any of Samsung’s range of Galaxy Tab devices topple the market dominating Apple iPad and upcoming iPad 2? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon Appstore for Android opens in the US Posted: 22 Mar 2011 07:31 AM PDT Apple sues over Appstore name, Amazon launches anyway. Amazon has unleashed its new Appstore for Android with a free release of Angry Birds Rio in the United States, ending months of waiting for it to open its virtual doors
The new applications portal launched in the United States this morning, but frustratingly there's no news of a roll-out in the UK or Europe at the time of writing.
The big launch-day release is, naturally, Angry Birds Rio, which Amazon is offering for free for the first day to entice Android Market users to switch allegiances. The Amazon store is also the only place Android owners will be able to download the new game. On top of that Amazon is offering users a free paid-for app every day to kick start the operation.
The store allows users to download apps either through the bespoke smartphone app, or from the Amazon website itself. Website purchases will be instantly delivered to your handset in the New Apps section. Once you've downloaded the app and signed in, it's a very nifty operation.
The stand-alone app takes the appearance of other Amazon shopping apps we've seen and it's really easy to navigate and find the content you're after. In many ways it's more appealing than the Android Market app itself, with a rolling category carousel and integrated search bar.
As of 3pm GMT, Angry Birds Rio was the top Free app, while the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Shazam Encore and Fruit Ninja battled it out for the top spot in the paid-for category.
Hopefully UK Android fans won't have to wait too much longer to get their hands on Angry Birds Rio as iOS owners already have it. It's not fair!

iPad 2 UK release time officially confirmed by Apple Posted: 22 Mar 2011 05:55 AM PDT Apple iPad 2 sale time to be 5pm Apple has confirmed that its second-generation tablet the Apple iPad 2 will not launch in the UK until 5pm this Friday, March 25th. The company issued a statement to T3, stating that: "There has been no delay in the on sale time of iPad 2 and the 5pm launch in the UK and across Europe is exactly the same as it was in the US."
Apple has issued an official press release stating: “Apple today announced that iPad 2, the second-generation of its third post-PC device, will go on sale in 25 additional countries this Friday, March 25. iPad 2 will be available at Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorised Resellers at 5 p.m. local time.” Although officially a strategic decision, sellers have been less sanguine. Robert Peckham, former executive director of the Mac Technology Association reseller group earlier leaked the 5pm arrival declaring third party retailers such as Carphone Warehouse are being forced by Apple to hold their already present stocks of the iPad 2 until the new 5pm launch time. He added retailers will have to “squeeze an entire day of sales in to one or two hours on a Friday evening.”
The official Apple confirmation came just hours after T3.com spoke to staff at Apple’s flagship London store on Regents Street who confirmed to us that stocks of the iPad 2 would be available to consumers when doors open at 9am.
As well as confirming the short term delay on the iPad 2, Apple’s release officially unveiled that those eager to snap up the dual camera, dual-core processor bragged slimmed down tablet will be able to order it online from 1pm on Friday. Stock levels for the UK launch of the iPad 2 are currently unknown but due to high demand in the US and issues with production following the Japanese earthquake, supplies are expected to be short lived.
Will the half day delay on the iPad 2 launch effect your plans of queuing up for the device on launch day? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad 2 UK release date to be delayed following supply error Posted: 22 Mar 2011 03:57 AM PDT Second-gen Apple tablet to land half a day later than planned The UK release of the Apple iPad 2 is to be hit by a half day delay as Apple struggle to meet stock requirements, a new report has claimed.
The delays, which have been put down to an error in the company’s supply chain, will see third party retailers such as the Carphone Warehouse forced to hold their already present stocks of the iPad 2 until 5pm on launch day as Apple looks to rectify the issue and remain the first place where users can purchase the dual-camera, dual-core processor touting tablet.
Robert Peckham, former executive director of the Mac Technology Association reseller group is quoted as confirming the reported delays and the issues this will cause for third party retailers. He said resellers will have to “squeeze an entire day of sales in to one or two hours on a Friday evening” as well as ensuring staff can stay longer to cover customer demand.
Despite these claims, Apple’s London Regent Street store have just confirmed to T3.com that stocks of the iPad 2 will be available in store from the planned 9am store opening.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9: specs and details outed Posted: 22 Mar 2011 03:19 AM PDT Customised UI and unique app switcher promised. Samsung is all set to reveal its latest slate, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 today. But with the official announcement still hours away, the chaps at PocketNow have managed to nab details of the tablet, which is being unveiled at the CTIA show in the US.
The new effort comes with an 8.9-inch screen (hardly a surprise) with a 1200 x 800 resolution, measures just 8.6mm thin (0.2mm thinner than the iPad 2) and tips the scales at just 470g. The iPad 2 Wi-Fi model weighs a hefty 601g by comparison.
There’s also a 1GHz processor inside, along with Android Honeycomb. However, Samsung says it has customised the latter with its own UX, which includes a ‘Live Panels’ UI, app switching using a ‘Mini App Tray’ feature and custom widgets.
Full details will be revealed later, so stay tuned to T3.com for news as we get it.

Apple OS X Snow Leopard update fixes new MacBook Pro woes Posted: 22 Mar 2011 02:03 AM PDT Initial reports suggest Apple has fixed all 2011 MacBook Pro niggles. Apple has just released its latest OS X update, which it says fixes a string of problems which have emerged with the recently released new MacBook Pro range. The machines had been crashing under load, as well as suffering from flickering screens and problems working with iTunes Home Sharing.
The release, OS X 10.6.7, “…includes general operating system fixes for Mac OS X Snow Leopard that enhance the stability, compatibility, performance, and security,” according to Apple’s official statement.
It’s believed the issues were related to the machines’ graphics drivers, as well as early niggles with the new Thunderbolt connection. After a slew of complaints on its official forums, Apple will be hoping this update will kill these problems off stat.

Apple sues Amazon over App Store name Posted: 22 Mar 2011 12:39 AM PDT Move follows similar action against Microsoft. Apple is suing Amazon, claiming that its App Store trademark has been infringed by the online retailer’s forthcoming Android Appstore. Cupertino says it has tried to reach out to Amazon, but that it hasn’t, “…provided a substantive response.”
It appears that Amazon had hoped that by making its online emporium the Android Appstore, rather than Android App Store, it would bypass any legal tussle with Apple. Yet in the lawsuit, filed in California on 18 March, Apple says, “Amazon has begun improperly using Apple’s App Store mark in connection with Amazon’s mobile-software developer program.” It goes on to add, “Amazon has unlawfully used the App Store mark to solicit software developers throughout the United States.”
While Amazon has refused to comment, an Apple spokesperson said, “We’ve asked Amazon not to copy the App Store name because it will confuse and mislead customers.” Apple is also in a battle with Microsoft over the term App Store, with the latter claiming such a generic term cannot be trademarked.
This one could run for months. Where do you sit? Is Apple right to complain about Amazon’s App Store name? Or is it just throwing its toys out of the pram? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
