News@8pm: 3DS freebies and the £5 million iPad 2 Posted: 23 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. iPad 2 suffers at the hands of renowned gadget fiddler and king of kitsch, Stuart Hughes. The midas man has created a gold covered iPad 2 forgoing Apple's own design choices in favour of 24ct gold, dinosaur bone, 8.5ct diamond and Ammolite. The tricked out tablet now weighs more than four times its plainer sibling but I wouldn't worry too much as only two will be made with each costing £5 million so the chances are you won't have to suffer the strain of ever actually holding one. Samsung meanwhile have managed to slip out a tablet that is not only lighter and thinner than Stuart Hughes' creation but also the stock iPad 2 itself. No mean feat considering the praise that has been heaped on the iPad's diminutive physique. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 offers some pretty impressive specs and a nice design whilst sporting a Touchwiz-flavoured version of Android's tablet OS, Honeycomb. We're still waiting on details of when this will hit the UK but it sure looks like an interesting alternative to the iPad 2.

Apple patents suggest that Cupertino may soon be treating the world to a 3G Macbook. The patent shows an adjustable wireless antenna residing in the top corner of the screen's bezel. Whilst the idea of a 3G Macbook is appealing, lets hope that Apple has learnt its lesson since iPhone 4 antenna-gate. It certainly looks safe enough tucked up there out of the way,but we'll have to wait and see when, or indeed if, this comes to fruition. Whilst we look towards the future of Apple, some concerned Apple fanboys are panicking about the potential loss of the iPod classic from Apple's line-up. One quick email later and Steve Jobs' replied reassuring us that Apple has no plans to kill off the iPod Classic. So now we can all sleep easy at night knowing that the grandfather of the iPod lineup will be available with its scroll wheel and mammoth storage for a while yet.
Retailers are treating the early-adopters of the Nintendo 3DS to a variety of goodies, and discounts. Those who will be attending the midnight launches can expect to receive anything from a Nintendo t-shirt, a free game, a free 3DS console or even a space blanket to keep you warm in the queue. Check out our Nintendo 3DS midnight launch rundown to find out where you should be shopping. For those of you keen to get your hands on a 3DS but worried that your fragile eyes won't be able to cope with such a full-frontal collision with the third dimension, do not fear. Nintendo announced today that all 3DS games will play in 2D, the move is said to open the device up to more users, some of whom "just can't see 3D". Presumably these people struggle eating their cereal in the morning. But seriously, with concerns of eye-strain rife amongst Doctors, it is good to hear that Nintendo are making the 3D feature optional.
Windows Phone 7 finally gets its long-awaited 'NoDo' update that brings with it the much sought after copy and paste functionality. Reminiscent of the painful affair of getting copy and paste onto the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 has taken 5 months to bring the basic feature which admittedly is nothing compared to Apple's 26 months. The copy and paste update also brought with it system-wide improvements including faster apps, and upgraded camera performance. One of the first Windows Phone 7 handsets to deliver copy and paste functionality out of the box will be HTC's upgrade to its flagship handset, the HD7. The new HTC HD7S has utilised the marketing ploy of adding an 'S' to a previous model to mask what is mostly an incremental upgrade. A new Super LCD is just about the only change to the hardware, so don't raise your hopes too high. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Apple remove 'gay cure' app after international petition Posted: 23 Mar 2011 10:20 AM PDT Exodus International culled from the App Store having offended gay rights protestors Apple has pulled a so called ‘gay cure’ app from the iTunes App Store after more than 150,000 people signed an online petition for the removal of the controversial Exodus International application.
Listed as offering users “freedom from homosexuality,” the Exodus International app from the religious ministry of the same name has vanished from the App Store just days after sparking a global outcry. Despite being listed in the application retail outlet since February 15th, it was only this week that the app came to the public attention.
Speaking with CNET Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr reportedly confirmed the removal of the Exodus International app stating it was taken down as"it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people."
Were Apple right to take the Exodus International down? Should it ever have appeared in the App Store in the first place? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The live show, which is part of the Nissan Juke ‘Behind the Hit’ campaign and will be headlined by a DJ set from La Roux’s Elly Jackson, is to be held on April 5th at the Camden location. Spotify will stream the live music event as it happens in an attempt to launch a new era in the company’s music providing service.
Nissan’s Behind the Hit event will also feature performances from Delphic, The Naked and Famous as well as Pony Pony Run Run. The event was described by Nissan GB’s Online Marketing Manager Andy Jackson who said: "The aim of the 'Behind the Hit' competition was to find an uplifting song that sets the mood when you're driving for a night out. We feel we've done that with Helly and look forward to the first public hearing at Koko and through Spotify."

Apple patent hints towards imminent 3G MacBook arrival Posted: 23 Mar 2011 08:41 AM PDT Removable antenna to feature in upcoming MacBook models Apple patents offer a tantalising look into the future of the Cupertino tech giant with the latest filing hinting towards the imminent arrival of a 3G capable MacBook.
The new patent, which was officially granted to Apple earlier this week, shows a MacBook laptop with an inbuilt, adjustable 3G wireless antenna which would allow users to make use of wireless internet on the move much like on the iPhone or iPad.
Presenting an intriguing look at spec options that might soon face wannabe MacBook and MacBook Air owners, the latest filing is not the only patent from Apple to hint towards 3G capable laptop computers. An earlier patent application from the company suggested future MacBooks will host a 3G antenna crafted into their outer casing, much like the issue hit Apple iPhone 4.
Would 3G inclusion in upcoming MacBooks be of interest to your buying needs or a superfluous pricy add on? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Play.com security breach: more details Posted: 23 Mar 2011 03:16 AM PDT Online retailer says addresses were stolen from third party email marketing firm. Play.com has further detailed the security breaches which have seen customers’ email addresses stolen from a third party email marketing firm in the United States.
In an email sent to users, the CEO of Play.com, John Perkins, said, “On Sunday the 20th of March some customers reported receiving a spam email to email addresses they only use for Play.com. We reacted immediately by informing all our customers of this potential security breach in order for them to take the necessary precautionary steps.”
Perkins said the breaches may be related to “irregular activity” identified by its US email service provider, Silverpop. He added, “Investigations at the time showed no evidence that any of our customer email addresses had been downloaded. We would like to assure all our customers that the only information communicated to our email service provider was email addresses. Play.com have taken all the necessary steps with Silverpop to ensure a security breach of this nature does not happen again.
While Play.com says no credit card or other personal details have been stolen, the site has been criticised over the fact customers cannot manually remove such information.
It’s believed the stolen email addresses are being targeted as part of phishing scams. If you have any concerns, Play.com says you should email them directly at privacy@play.com This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Samsung: "Glasses-free 3D in next 10 years will be difficult" Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:44 AM PDT Korean looks to quell chatter about its 3D glasses-free TV. Samsung recently touted a 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV at a tech show in China. But the Korean giant has just come out and made it clear that it’s unlikely to be released in the next few years.
What’s more it also reckons that glasses-free 3D TV is years away from ever being good enough for the home. In a statement to Slashgear, Sammy said, “Attempts to put glasses-free 3D TV to market within the next 10 years will be difficult.”
Considering Toshiba is plotting the release of its own glasses-free 3D TV by the end of 2011, Samsung’s claim is something of a surprise. But the company goes on to add that, “To make naturally viewed glasses-free 3D TV, for instance in a living room where several people can watch TV from various angles, the technology needs to deliver 3D to at least 32 viewing spots.”
It says that for such TVs to have mass appeal, costs will need to come down significantly and a while new infrastructure will be required. Disappointed? Tell us what you think of Samsung’s statement on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

"No plans" to kill off iPod Classic says Steve Jobs Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:24 AM PDT Comments come after rampant speculation that device was about to get the chop. Apple has “no plans” to kill off the iPod Classic according to Steve Jobs, with the Apple boss forced to respond to a customer query after rampant speculation about the device’s future.
The initial email, sent by a MacRumors forum user, said, “I've heard a LOT of speculation that Apple is looking to kill the iPod Classic because it wasn't updated on Sept. 1st [2010], and that a lot of people would rather Touch. The iPod Classic is probably the best iPod in the line. PLEASE DON'T KILL IT!!!”
Jobs’ one line reply read, “We have no plans to.” The device was the only one of the iPod line not to be refreshed last year, after the iPod touch, nano and shuffle were all given iterative updates.
In recent weeks, talk of the iPod Classic’s demise has once again ramped up, with reports that supplies were running low. However, it seems it’ll be some time yet before the capacious Classic is given the chop.
