News@8pm: iPad 2 sells out and 3DS porn released

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Early adopters suffered yet again at the hands of Nintendo's newest toy, the 3DS. Users reported being struck down by a black screen error with the only fix being a hard reboot. For 3DS users whose screens are fully functioning, the internet has already served up its first serving of smut for the 3D device. Julie Watai's gallery of softcore 3DS compatible photos give users the joy of experiencing some filth in all three dimensions.

iPhone's bi-annual fail struck again this weekend as the clocks sprung forward for British Summer Time. Once again the iPhone's alarms failed to go off as they were apparently flummoxed by the changing clocks. Berated businessmen everywhere could be heard fuming at Apple's incompetence. Perhaps they'll have it sorted by June when the iPhone 5 is expected to be announced. Lets hope so, although it does make a good excuse for a lie-in on a Monday morning.

MobileMe update plans supposedly broke cover today. The refresh would give users online storage of their music libraries and at the new, lower price of only $20 per year. The move could put Apple at the forefront of cloud-based media storage. That is, if Amazon doesn't beat them to it. The online retailer is pegged to unveil a similar cloud service as early as next week and we're looking forward to a tussle at the top that brings users better features at lower prices.

iPad 2 stocks depleted after only a few hours of sales on launch day. Concerns about stock levels of the iPad 2 were justified on Friday after huge queues gobbled up all the available tablets in a matter of hours, sadly leaving many customers without an iPad. For the lucky few who managed to get their hands on Apple's latest creation, they will be pleased to know that the iPad 2 is rocking a much tougher, bendier display so you can sleep easy knowing that your new purchase is a bit safer in your sweaty, excited hands.

Amazon enters the race for cloud storage supremacy

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:22 AM PDT

The world's largest online retailer to beat Apple and Google to the cloud

Rumours of cloud-based music services simply refuse to die, Apple and Google have long since been the subject of speculation on the issue and today it seems that Amazon may be joining the party.

Word is that Amazon is looking to beat both Google and Apple to the punch by announcing its digital locker for video, books and music as early as next week. The service would allow users to store all of their existing digital content online, even content not purchased through Amazon.

Apparently still in the midst of negotiations with record companies and film studios, unnamed sources have said that Amazon could announce the service before negotiations are finalised.

With pressure mounting from all sides, how long can it be before the labels and studios will have to buckle to the will of three of the biggest names in the technology and retail industries?

Solid details about the service are few and far between with nary a peep about pricing. However, with Apple's digital locker rumoured to cost an annual fee of $20, Amazon would surely have to stay competitive.

Considering the aggressive pricing of Amazon's new Appstore and its apparent eagerness to win the race to the cloud, we could see competition pushing prices even lower - perhaps (fingers crossed) even free.

Who do you think will be the king of the cloud, Amazon, Google or Apple? Have your say on the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

XXX domain banned by Indian government over porn laws

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:14 AM PDT

Indian announces plans to block the upcoming XXX domain

India has become the first country to announce it will block the .XXX domain suffix that was recently approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Having been given the green light amidst widespread complaints from adult industry activists, the .XXX domain, which will be used by websites offering pornographic and adult material, is to be banned by the Indian government on the basis that it goes against the country’s laws.

A statement from a Senior Official in the country’s Ministry of IT announced: "India along with many other countries from the Middle East and Indonesia opposed the grant of the domain in the first place, and we would proceed to block the whole domain, as it goes against the IT Act and Indian laws."

Those who petitioned against the introduction of the .XXX domain on behalf of the porn industry did so on the fear that such bans would be introduced and that sites affiliated with the .XXX suffix would then see their corresponding .com sites barred by nations looking to curtail access to smutty sites.

Do you think other countries will following in India’s footsteps and ban access to .XXX websites? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google launches Disco group-texting app for iPhone

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PDT

Group text is all the rage and Google wants in.

Google has launched a new app group-texting app for iPhone which allows you to put your contacts book into groups and message them en masse.

The Disco app, and corresponding website Disco.com, is a product of Google's in-house Slide start-up and, strangely enough, is only available for iPhone rather than launching on the Android platform.

The application which allows users to have an IM-like discussion with multiple members through text-messaging joins contenders like Fast Society, Beluga and GroupMe which offer a similar service.

The bare-bones application, which capitalises on an increasing interest in group messaging presents users with an IM-like experience and even allows users to pull numbers in from their Facebook friends and add them into the mix.

You'll need to register your own number, and anyone you add to a group will be notified by text message. This is an interesting one. Group-texting seems to be taking-off at the moment, despite the range of free internet-based IM options so it'll be interesting to see how things go from here.

Nintendo 3DS games sales fail to meet launch hype

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 08:18 AM PDT

Launch weekend game sales disappoint despite high expectations

Early reports seem to indicate that the Nintendo 3DS may have suffered a rather underwhelming reception over the weekend, its first on the UK market.

Whilst sales figures for European hardware are never released, the games charts are telling a rather worrying tale for the portable games console that is to bring extra-dimensional gaming to the masses.

Over the weekend, Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition managed a measly 6th place on the individual formats chart despite being the 3DS' best performing title. The next best offering for the extra-dimensional handheld was Pilotwings Resort which only managed to come in at number 8, bested by Pokemon White for the previous-gen, standard dimension DS.

Crysis 2 came out on top this weekend, leading both the individual and multiformat charts, putting Nintendo's lukewarm performance to shame.

Whilst the 3DS is sure to pick up more sales in the weeks following its launch, we had come to expect big things from the little console given the hype surrounding its launch. Lets hope Ninty still has a few gems hidden away that could challenge the current champions from Xbox 360 and PS3.

Have you been holding off on the 3DS so far? And if so, what's keeping you back? Have your say on the T3 Facebook and Twitter feeds.

iPad 2 UK launch sparks new era in Team Apple campaign

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 07:53 AM PDT

iPad 2 event takes Team Apple to new heights

T3’s campaign to find a consumer favourite between Apple and Android systems and devices has taken a well publicised turn as Team Apple came out in force for the official UK launch of the iPad 2.

- Team Apple iPad 2 queue pictures: Click here

Having queued outside Apple’s flagship London Regent Street store for more than 33 hours in order to be first in line to pick up the revamped second-generation iPad with its dual-cameras, dual-core processor and slimmer form factor, 32 year old Jewels Lewis adorned his T3 Team Apple t-shirt when finally getting his hands on the new tablet.

With the world’s media pointing in his direction as he shadow boxed, jigged and strutted his way in to the store and to the stocks of iPad 2 devices, Jewels threw the gauntlet to the Android Army by taking Team Apple, through his t-shirt, to the likes of The Sun, The Daily Mail and a host of televised news broadcasters.

Following Jewels into Apple’s Regent Street store, the next 11 members of the iPad 2 queue rocked their T3 Team Apple t-shirts to the fleet of photographers, TV crews and reporters.

With Team Apple now taking the campaign to an international audience and advancing the exposure of their side’s cause we a calling out all wannabe Android Army recruits to top the Team Apple efforts and get your team’s colours and logo out to an even larger audience. As always, the best efforts will be rewarded.

Nintendo 3DS gets 3D porn filling just days after launch

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:38 AM PDT

Its only been out for 3 days but the 3DS has already inspired some new, risqué uses

As is so often the way with new technologies, just days after its official UK launch the Nintendo 3DS has been given a filling as blue as an Avatar extra.

The well-intentioned little device, aimed primarily at youngsters looking to get their peepers around a new era of immersive 3D gaming, has already been tarnished by the brush of Japanese Cosplay upskirt.

Julie Watai, aka Ai Amano, combined her love of gadgets, photography and raising men's temperatures, to create a free gallery of saucy, 3DS compatible photos in full 3D. The photos are non-nude but are probably NSFW given their naughty nature and tendency to include flashed panties.

Unsurprisingly, the pin-up model has seen high demand for her free images with over 52,000 downloads in the first two days. Presumably Julie will not be the last to take advantage of the 3DS as a platform for spicy media, with 3DS compatible 3D porn flicks no doubt already in the works.

Those of you who want to check out the images - you know, just out of curiosity - can download them from Hobbymedia.it to copy onto your 3DS' SD card.

iPhone 5 release date coming June 6th as WWDC plans set?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:20 AM PDT

June dates confirmed for WWDC and expected iPhone 5 arrival

Apple has officially announced the dates for this year’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), with the San Francisco based event set to take place between June 6th and 10th.

Usually coinciding with the arrival of the latest edition iPhone, it is expected that this year’s conference will follow suit with the widely expected Apple iPhone 5 likely to touch down during the early June event.

Further bolstering speculation that the fifth generation Apple smartphone will be officially unveiled during the week long conference, and sparking rumours that iOS 5.0 will land at the same time contrary to recent speculation of a software delay, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller, announced: “At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS.”

Whilst the annual Apple event will focus much of its effort and events on developers and the forwarding of the application market that the company has for so long dominated, many consumers will be looking to WWDC 2011 in hope of catching that first official glimpse of the iPhone 5, a device rumoured to be launching with a slimmer form factor, new metallic backed case with the antenna built into the Apple logo and in-built NFC technologies.

What features would you most like to see added to the Apple iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Snoop Dogg uses MySpace to launch his new album

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:50 AM PDT

With MySpace losing visitors fast, we ask "Is Snoop Dogg barking mad?"

Snoop Dogg has chosen MySpace as the forum to launch his new album, Doggumentary a full two days before its official release.

Snoop Dogg is no stranger to using social media to promote his music having used Twitter and Facebook to leak out several tracks from his last album. However, with reports of MySpace losing 10 million unique users in the last month, it seems that Snoop's Doggone crazy to have any faith in the social media dinosaur.

However, given the recent wave of shared instamatic-inspired nostalgia, it seems that retro is back. Perhaps Snoop is appealing to the hipster in all of us who yearns for a simpler time, before digital cameras, when Ray-Bans were original and before Facebook stole our hearts.

Is Snoop really so far behind the times, or is it so backward that its marketing gold? After all, you know how the saying goes, "No publicity is bad Pupp-licity".

Could Snoop bring MySpace back from the grave? Or is he simply showing his age? Tell us your thoughts on the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds

Apple iPad 2 sells out just hours after UK launch

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:35 AM PDT

iPad 2 demand sees second-gen tablet sell out just hours after official UK launch

Apple has sold out of the eagerly awaited iPad 2 just hours after the second-generation tablet went on sale in the UK.

With hundreds of people queuing outside both of Apple’s flagship London stores on Regent Street and in Covent Garden ahead of Friday’s 5pm launch, stocks of the slimmer, lighter, dual-camera and dual-core processor touting device have failed to meet with demand.

With concerns voiced prior to launch about limited availability now backed up by sold out plaques adorning store windows, Apple’s own stores as well as third party retailers such as Currys and PC World have all announced lack of stock for the iPad 2 which is for the first time available in either a black or new white form.

With prices kicking off at £399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model, raising all the way up to the lofty heights of the 64GB Wi-Fi +3G edition that lined up on shelves priced £659, Apple has made iPad 2 models available to a varying degree of markets and user needs.

With Apple’s Regent Street store unable to confirm when stocks of the iPad 2 would be replenished a spokesperson for the outlet has confirmed to T3 that a page on the Apple website will launch at 9pm this evening offering guidance and reservation possibilities for wannabe iPad 2 owners looking to pick the device up in store and avoid the 3-4 week wait facing online orders.

Were you one of the lucky few to pick up your iPad 2 before stocks depleted? If so let us know what you think of the second-gen tablet via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

MobileMe set to take your music to the cloud for $20

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:05 AM PDT

New MobileMe rumours suggest that Apple will soon offer online storage of music files

Reports of a deal between Apple and Warner today have sparked fresh rumours regarding Cupertino's plans for its aging MobileMe service.

The refresh is said to focus on users' music libraries, introducing a feature called the "locker" which is expected to house a cloud-based backup of user's files. The service is also rumoured to be receiving a healthy price slash, down from $99 per year to only $20, somewhat disappointing given previous reports had suggested that the service may be free.

The reported deal with Warner is Apple's first step towards gaining the approval of the major labels. Apple is apparently using this win as leverage to get the others on board.

If proved true, these rumours would explain the mysterious data centre that Apple has built in North Carolina. The $1 billion storage facility could well be the new home of millions of iTunes libraries.

Currently it's uncertain whether the updated service would simply be a backup for misplaced files or if it would allow downloading or streaming to a user's Mac, PC or iDevices. It's hard to know how the major labels would react to a cloud-based music service, however, Spotify's success here in Europe gives us hope that they might just come round to the idea.

Amazon Appstore includes try before you buy feature

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:48 AM PDT

Amazon includes a full Android emulator in its new Appstore.

Although the Android Market may have ditched its 24 hour trial period when purchasing new apps, Amazon's new Appstore allows customers to try out apps on an emulator before taking the plunge.

The new Test Drive feature makes use of a fully functioning emulator meaning that you can not only trial the app, but you can also exit it and navigate around the Android OS. You can even even browse the web - be careful though, if you navigate to the Amazon Appstore within the browser and access the emulator through there, rumour has it the Universe will implode.

The Amazon Appstore has certainly created waves since opening in the US last week: attracting attention from Apple's lawyers, undercutting Google's own market prices, offering exclusive games and now offering the coolest trial experience we've seen in an App store yet.

There's still no word from the retail giant on any plans for launching the Appstore in the UK, although we will be sure to let you know if we hear anything.

Would you like to see similar functionality find its way into the Android Market and Apple's App Store? Have your say on the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS suffering from black screen error

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Error isn't related to one particular game according to users.

The Nintendo 3DS only hit UK shelves on Friday. But already reports are emerging of the three-dimensional console crashing during games, with a black error screen appearing.

It doesn’t appear that just one game causes the problem, which leads the customer through a hard reboot of the device. However, reports are widespread, with the likes of Super Monkey Ball, Ghost Recon and Rayman 3D all throwing up the error screen at different points.

Nintendo has yet to offer any comment on the problem. The 3DS’s launch last Friday appears to have been a massive success, with hundreds queuing to get their hands on one at midnight.

Has your Nintendo 3DS been crashing? Tell us all about it now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone alarm glitch returns following UK clock change

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 02:43 AM PDT

Apple's smartphone alarm falls foul of clock change

Apple has once again left iPhone users running late for work as the smartphone’s alarm glitch returns following the one hour switch in UK clocks in accordance with British Summer Time.

As UK clocks made the one hour forward jump in the early hours of Sunday morning, iPhone users have today found themselves running late for appointments after their Monday morning alarms engaged an hour late.

Whilst other iPhone users have reported alarms going off an hour earlier than hoped, some have claimed their handsets simply failed to run the programmed alarms.

Having first caused issues when the clocks moved back late last year, Apple’s iPhone users were also struck by alarm failures at the start of the New Year, with American owners reporting problems when clocks moved forward Stateside earlier this month.

Said to affect single alarms set within the handset’s calendar application as opposed to the device’s dedicated alarm app, Apple has repeatedly said it would amend such issues. Those facing the problems are urged to delete and replace their preset alarms and restart their handsets.

Have you been affected by the iPhone alarm issues once again? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad 2 display: Much stronger than original iPad (video)

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 02:29 AM PDT

Tablet's second coming much more shatter-proof than its predecessor

iPad 2 Review, News, Pics

One of the few things Apple failed to mention in its hyperbole-laden iPad 2 announcement was any changes made to the display. We know that the device itself is thinner than before, but how has that affected its toughness?

Very will, as it turns out. The video below by ifixyouri.com shows a test of the iPad 2’s display strength against that of the original, with pretty conclusive results. When pressure is applied to bend the display, the iPad 2’s glass seems to be able to withstand a bit of beating.

The glass doesn’t break until a huge amount of force is applied, compared to the poor performance of the easily-shattered display on the original ‘Pad. Good news for any accident-prone owners of the new iMachine.

Google NFC mobile payments edge closer

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 02:20 AM PDT

Tie-up only in early stages, but battle lines in smartphone wallet wars being drawn.

Google has hooked up with US bank Citigroup and credit card types MasterCard with a view to releasing a dedicated mobile wallet for its Android operating system. That’s according to, “…people familiar with the matter,” who have spoken to The Wall Street Journal.

Word is that customers with a Citigroup debit or credit card would be able to pair their plastic with their Android phone using a specially-designed mobile wallet app. They could then use the embedded NFC tech to use contactless payment machines to pay for stuff using their smartphone.

Of course, with Google involved, users will get targeted ads and offers depending on purchases. There’ll even be a way of tracking expenditure via the mobile wallet app.

Apparently, the new service is being developed with, “…one current [Android] model,” presumably the NFC-packing Nexus S. However, plenty more forthcoming phones are said to be getting the service.

Would you use a mobile wallet? Or do you think it’s too risky? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Android tablets: no Honeycomb upgrade for 2.x slates

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:13 AM PDT

News comes amid chatter of Google Nexus Tablet.

The Google Nexus Tablet might have stolen the headlines this morning, but there’s another tidbit about Google’s Android slate plans that doesn’t make pretty reading for some users. Apparently, the Big G will not allow tablets using Android 2.x to upgrade to Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

The news comes from Eldar Murtazin, who also broke the story about the Nexus Tablet. He says that any such upgrades breach Google’s Android licensing agreement, flying in the face of those manufacturers who had previously claimed updates would be available for slates using the non-tablet-optimised version of the OS.

Samsung’s original Galaxy Tab is still stranded on Android 2.2 FroYo and is unlikely to get a boost. Meanwhile, the forthcoming HTC Flyer only uses Android 2.4. Although HTC has said it’s working on an update, it now seems unlikely one will be available. That could hamstring its chances of becoming an Android tablet contender considerably.

Is Google right to stop these updates in order to prevent a major fragmentation of its OS? Or has it got it all wrong? Tell us what you reckon on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Google Nexus Tablet incoming

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 11:53 PM PDT

LG set to be hardware partner for Google's latest Nexus device.

Still don’t believe that the slew of Android Honeycomb slates about to hit UK shelves can challenge the iPad 2? Well, Google’s working on something that might just change your mind. Word is the search giant is prepping its own Nexus Tablet and that it’ll be out this summer.

The news comes from mobile watcher Eldar Murtazin, a man with an excellent track record in sniffing out the biggest mobile stories months before anyone else. He says that the new slate will be made by LG, with the Korean company following HTC and Samsung in making Nexus-branded devices for Google.

What’s more, he says the Nexus Tablet will rock the very latest version of Android Honeycomb before any other device. That’ll make it every bit as important as the Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones, which also benefitted from bleeding edge versions of the mobile software on release.

For now, there’s no more word on specs. But expect to see plenty more hype and hoopla surrounding the Google Nexus Tablet in the next few months. Excited? Let us know what you want to see from the Nexus Tablet over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iOS 5: cloud-based update now due in autumn

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 11:36 PM PDT

Initial reports had claimed iOS 5 would be shown off at special Apple event next month.

Apple will not release iOS 5 until autumn, with the Cupertino company planning to show off its plans for the updated mobile operating system at June’s WWDC event. That’s according to, “…two solid sources,” who have spoken to TechCrunch.

The news flies in the face of rumours that Apple would tout iOS 5 at a special event in April, the month it’s traditionally unveiled the next iteration of its iPhone and iPad software. However, it’s believed that the release of iOS 5 has been delayed to coincide with the potential release of another iPad later this year.

Word is that iOS 5 will bring major changes, with cloud services being a major focus. This ties into recent chatter about a revamp of MobileMe, with talk of a “digital locker” for music and movies bought from iTunes. Location-based services are also set to be a prominent feature, as Apple looks to take on the likes of Google Latitude, Facebook Places and Foursquare.

Apparently, this delay in the launch of iOS 5 will not affect the planned summer release of the iPhone 5. The next-gen phone will instead come with iOS 4 to start, before getting the update a few months after it hits shelves.

Tell us what you think of Apple’s iOS 5 plans now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
