News@8pm: Evo 3D heads to EU and iPad 2 jailbroken Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Nintendo suffered from bad press today with 3DS users complaining about eye-strain. Pre-launch warnings from health officials did nothing to stop many people picking a 3DS up on launch night but it hasn't taken long for the reports of headaches to start rolling in. Ninty did manage to solve one of their problems though, as they issued a system software update to fix that pesky black screen of death.

Europe will get the HTC Evo 3D according to HTC's own French Twitter account. As with the other EVO models, we expected it to be left out over here but apparently a GSM version of the EVO 3D will be making its way onto the continent. HTC has managed to dominate the UK sales charts in recent months and the 3D handset is sure to bolster the company's position. The iPhone 4 meanwhile dropped a few places last month in the sales charts but March's figures see the iPhone pick itself back up to 3rd position, behind the HTC Desire and Desire HD.
Apple's newest store is set to open in Jerusalem. Apple's newest flagship store will contain within its walls the first Apple digital library - presumably a location for the public to access e-books. Apple's reasons for building in Jerusalem were said to be "symbolic", perhaps they're hoping for an annual pilgrimage to the store by the Apple faithful. Apple's latest cult-hit, the iPad 2 has already been cracked by developers. The iPad 2 jailbreak is available through the PwnageTool, allowing users to customise their tablet and access the Cydia Appstore. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Half of all tweets come from just 20,000 'elite' Twitter users Posted: 29 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PDT Micro-blogging site filled with few voices As many as half of all tweets shared via micro blogging site Twitter are created by just 20,000 of the social network’s users, a new study has shown.
Known as ‘elite’ users, the 20,000 most prolific tweeters account for around fifty per cent of the service’s content despite the social outlet, which celebrated its fifth birthday last week, hosting well over 200 million registered accounts.
Speaking on the findings a Yahoo! researcher said: “Based on this classification, we find a striking concentration of attention on Twitter - roughly 50 per cent of tweets consumed are generated by just 20,000 elite users- where the media produces the most information, but celebrities are the most followed.”
It was revealed earlier this month that more than one billion tweets are now sent each and every week with daily tweet totals regularly topping ht e140 million mark.

Apple to open new flagship retail store in Jerusalem Posted: 29 Mar 2011 06:51 AM PDT Apple to develop religious land Apple is planning on opening a new flagship store at the entrance of Jerusalem which will play host to the first Apple digital library, new reports from the Jerusalem Post have revealed.
The 50,000 square foot store, which will reportedly be ready to open its doors within the next three years, is said to be in the works to coincide with plans to build a new "15-screen, 25 million cinema multiplex, called Cinema City, located in the same area,” the Jerusalem Post reports.
Having launched the iPad 2 in the UK and 25 other countries across the world last Friday, March 25th, Apple has since been faced with stock shortages with neither of the company’s leading London based stores, on Regent Street and in Covent Garden, currently able to offer the second-generation device that touts dual-cameras, a new dual-core processor and a slimmer, lighter form factor to that of its market dominating predecessor.
Is Apple’s move into such an iconic location a smart or foolhardy tactic? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 4 regains ground as UK's top handset Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:56 AM PDT The iPhone 4 climbs back up the charts after a miserable February Despite being almost a year old and a little long in the tooth when compared with the recent spate of dual-core smartphones, Apple's iPhone 4 has re-entered the top three of the UK's most popular handsets after slipping in the charts recently.
Having had a disappointing February which saw the iPhone slip 4 places all the way down to 7th, Apple's dominant device has clawed its way back up to a respectable 3rd place behind the HTC Desire in first and its spinoff the HTC Desire HD retaining second.
The iPhone 4's renewed success has been put down to attractive new offers as retailers attempt to clear stock in preparation for the next generation model, traditionally introduced around June.
However, with recent rumours suggesting that the iPhone 5 may not be revealed until autumn, the situation has become a little more complicated. Whilst the iPhone enjoyed a revival, the big winners in the recent statistics were HTC, which took three of the top four spots, and Android which continues to account for 50% of the charts. Rim continued to struggle, however, as both the Blackberry Torch and Curve 8520 lost slipped down the table.

Nintendo 3DS eye strain issues see user complaints Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:34 AM PDT
Just days after the Nintendo 3DS went on sale across the UK, Europe and the US, Nintendo has been inundated with complaints from gamers suffering from headaches and eye strain when using the device, forcing the company to make an official statement.
The portable glasses-free 3D games console sparked controversy prior to launch with health officials warning against the dangers caused by the device’s autostereoscopic display with a seven year old age rating eventually bestowed upon the revolutionary gadget.
Continuing his defence of the console’s health implications Saunders added: "As with anything that requires focus, from reading to staring at a computer screen, taking breaks frequent breaks is always recommended. When viewing any kind of 3D images, some people might experience minor discomfort. The effects are short term and have no lasting effect, in fact most players can continue after taking a short break.”
"The Nintendo 3D was designed with a 3D depth slider that lets users adjust the 3D effect to a level that suits them for optimum enjoyment," concluded Saunders, insisting Nintendo has done everything possible to ensure users of the 3DS remain safe and in good health.

iPad 2 jail breaks kick in just days after launch Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:20 AM PDT New iPad 2 owners open device following release Just days after the Apple iPad 2 touched down and then quickly sold out in the UK, fans have begun jail breaking the second-generation tablet.
Attacking version 4.3.1 of Apple’s iOS mobile operating system software as opposed to the new dual-camera touting hardware itself, a number of iPad jail breakers are claiming to have unlocked the latest tablet release with one option entitled PwnageTool stating it can offer simple jailbreaks to users.
Counteracting moves by Apple that would seemingly make it harder to jailbreak the iPad 2, PwnageTools’ developers said: “The download of the PwnageTool is now ready for those who want to jailbreak their devices now. It has been a long wait for consumers as they waited for the Apple iPad 2 Jailbreak since Apple announced a iOS 4.3.1 that will break the vulnerability to unlock the iPad 2.”
The iPad 2 officially launched in the UK and 25 other countries across the world last Friday, March 25th, with high demand and huge launch day queues resulting in the device, which sports a slimmer, lighter form factor than its predecessor and the new A5 dual-core processor, selling out within 24 hours. Whilst Apple has been unable to confirm when stocks will reappear in flagship stores, online orders are currently facing a 3-4 week shipping delay.

Nintendo responds to 3DS black screen of death errors Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:19 AM PDT 3DS launch blighted by a few teething problems Nintendo has swiftly reacted to the rise in reports of gamers suffering crashes with the Nintendo 3DS by instructing them to install the latest system update.
Dubbed, 'the black screen of death', the error message requests that 3DS owners hold down the power button to reset the console, and if the problem persists, to contact customer services.
Nintendo issued the following statement to the Inquirer:
"Our recommendations are that if anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online.
"If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem."
The Nintendo 3DS launched in the UK last week accompanied with the first system update and some rather underwhelming games sales as we reported yesterday.
Have you been faced with the 'black screen of death' error? What have you made of your first few days with the Nintendo 3DS? Let us know via Twitter and Facebook.

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:01 AM PDT Top-end blower revealed at CTIA trade show across the pond last week. The HTC Evo 3D appears to be set for a European launch, with the Taiwanese mobile maker confirming via its French Twitter account that the blower will be making its way across the pond from the US.
The Evo 3D was touted during the recent CTIA event in the US. As with previous Evo models, it was expected to be US-only thanks to its CDMA chip. However, a GSM model appears to be primed for Europe.
Packing in a 1.2GHz chip, 1GB of RAM, 4GB storage, 3D viewing smarts and a stunning qHD screen, the HTC Evo 3D is certainly a phone we can get on board with. Using Android 2.3 and HTC Sense, it promises to be one of HTC’s best ever phones.

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 02:17 AM PDT Get set to pay a fortune for design-led German telly. Loewe’s new Art 46 LED TV has just been rolled out by the German telly maker. And while its bank balance-bashing £2,395 price tag might grab the headlines, it’s not just about the money. This TV crams in some seriously smart tech, with web connectivity at its heart.
The Art 46 LED is loaded up with Loewe’s own MediaHome software, so you can stream music, movies and snaps from your PC onto the telly. There’s also a MediaNet feature for snagging online content, including web video and even internet radio.
While the picture promises to be stunning thanks to the 200Hz LED panel, sound is a major feature too, with the Loewe Art 46 LED loaded up with 80W speakers. It’s what tawdry, explosive-laden, late-period Van Damme movies were made for.
At £2,395, there’s no denying it’s pricey. But it certainly looks a darn sight sharper than most TVs out there right now. It’s just a shame there are no 3D skills baked in. Posted: 29 Mar 2011 01:18 AM PDT Pricey new all-rounder can be snagged now. Vita Audio has just given the official nod to its beefed-up new R4i, which it says packs in a string of audio improvements that make it even better than its slick predecessor, the Vita Audio R4.
As well as an iPod dock, there’s FM, DAB and DAB+ radio crammed inside, not to mention a slot loading CD player which can handle standard discs as well as those loaded up with MP3s and WMA files.
Vita Audio says a new CD suspension system offers improved tracking, with the audio circuitry getting a boost too. It all means sound quality is even better than on the R4, impressive considering how good the original sounded.
The 80W amplifier and speaker system means the R4i is no slouch when it comes to kicking out tracks at high volume. It comes in black, white and walnut finishes, with a limited edition graphite model also hitting shelves. The price? An eye-watering £630. Still, you’ll struggle to find a compact all-rounder that sounds as good.

Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player official Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:58 PM PDT Play music from the cloud on the web or your Android phone. Less than 24 hours after rumours of an Amazon digital locker began to swirl, the online retail giant has come clean with its plans, unveiling its new Amazon Cloud Player and Amazon Cloud Drive services.
The new offerings, available in the US only for now, let punters stash up to 5GB of music on Amazon’s servers for free and play tracks back via the web or an Android phone.
If users buy just one album from Amazon MP3, that 5GB of Amazon Cloud Drive storage gets bumped up to a truly impressive 20GB. More space can be bought too, with storage plans kicking off at $20 a year for 20GB.
Music can be stashed in MP3 or AAC format, meaning DRM-free tracks from iTunes can also be loaded up onto the Cloud Drive. What’s more, albums bought from Amazon MP3 don’t count against the storage quota.
As well as being able to access and listen to tunes via the Cloud Player on the web, a Cloud Player service for Android now forms part of an updated Amazon MP3 Android app, meaning music fanatics can snag tracks from their personal online stash without having to clog up their phones.
Amazon’s new digital can also store videos, documents and photos, making it a perfect general backup solution. There’s no news on when it’ll land on these shores, but stay tuned to T3.com for news as we get it. Apple and Google are bound to be livid that their online retail rival has beaten them to the punch with this one. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
iPhone 5 not being launched at WWDC Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:37 PM PDT iPhone likely to land during traditional September iPod event instead. The iPhone 5 is unlikely to launch at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this June, with sources telling a number of tech writers that the event will instead be focused solely on software. Specifically an iOS update and plans for Mac OS X Lion.
One source told The Loop that, “If you go looking for iPhone 5 [at WWDC], you’re probably going to be disappointed.” Rumours suggest Apple will now wait until its annual iPod event in September to tout the new phone, with the music player now losing share as smartphone sales surge.
What’s more other insiders speaking to John Gruber at Daring Fireball reckon Apple could be poised to unleash the iPad 3 at the same event, with an upgraded MobileMe also being thrown into the equation.
So, with WWDC now set to be iPhone 5-free, what do you want to see come out of the San Francisco event? Let us know now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
