News@8pm: iPad 2 stock shortages and IE9 released

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple's iPad 2 launched in the US last Friday, like you didn't already know, and since then the second-gen tablet has been shifting like those metaphorical hot cakes. Tipped as Apple's most successful launch to date, the iPad 2 is reported to have sold one million units in its opening weekend in the states. This surge of sales has seen Apple report iPad 2 stock shortages with the camera-touting tablet now taking four to five weeks to ship online orders.

In general tech news Microsoft has officially launched Internet Explorer 9 with the web browser facing up to its rivals with a number of bold claims and handy new features. Elsewhere the recent Terminate the Rate campaign has resulted in Ofcom capping the rates mobile network providers can charge landline operators for connect calls to mobiles.

Upcoming tech news has seen information on a 10-inch HTC Flyer tablet leak with the iPad rivalling mooted device appearing in training material for those seemingly hugely prepared staff at office supplies superstore Staples. Other future product updates has seen reports Nokia's Windows Phone 7 handsets have been delayed until 2012 as Microsoft pushes back the OS's large Mango update.

More Apple news as rock legend Jon Bon Jovi has released a scathing attack on Apple's Steve Jobs openly declaring it is Job's who is solely responsible for the teetering downfall of the music industry. Back to the new tablet and mobile network provider Three has announced it will host the iPad 2 with a range of exclusive data plans. For more on the iPad 2 check out our hands-on ten things to do video below.

Google NFC trials to bring mobile payment systems

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 09:53 AM PDT

Google to start NFC trials within four months

Google is to begin NFC payment trials in the US as thousands of NFC cash-register systems are to be rolled out across New York and San Francisco, two people familiar with the matter have revealed.

Reports of Google’s move into NFC payment technology comes shortly after it was revealed the Apple iPhone 5 will not support NFC tech as previously thought with the Android OS creator looking to pioneer what is hotly tipped as one of the leading emerging technologies.

The anonymous sources revealed to Bloomberg that Google is planning on installing thousands of special VeriFone NFC compatible payment points across the leading west coast and east coast cities within the next four months allowing mobile phones users equipped with NFC tech to make payments by tapping their devices on the checkouts.

It is reported that as well as making payments, Google’s NFC system will allow users to utilise virtual gift-cards, store loyalty cards and coupon subscriptions all from a single handset. With NFC tech already inbuilt into the Samsung Nexus S, Nokia and RIM have both vowed to implement the near field communication technology in future devices.

Will NFC become widely adopted or be yet another passing trend? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

EA updates Dead Space graphics for iPad 2

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:38 AM PDT

Y-Axis inversion and full stereo soundtrack also added.

Electronic Arts have become the first games publisher to make use of the iPad 2's improved graphics by updating its killer Dead Space game just for owners of Apple's new tablet.

The new version of the gory third-person shooter is already on sale in the States and will hit the UK App Store on iPad 2 launch day on March 25th. As well as the graphical improvements, EA has also upgraded the control system and sound.

The official release says:  "Visual quality improvements exclusive to the iPad 2 bring a heightened sense of realism to the game’s environments, combat and enemies. Look sensitivity and Y-axis inversion deliver greater player control taking strategic dismemberment to a whole new level."

"A fully voice-acted stereo soundtrack, along with an orchestrated score and sound effects, allow players to hear every footstep in the dark empty passages and feel the tension build as they are pulled deeper into danger. Coupled with cutting-edge visuals that are rich in effects and atmospheric lighting, Dead Space reproduces the cinematic horror of the console experience and sets a new benchmark for graphical fidelity on the iOS platform."

Having played the version upon its release in the US, we can confirm that EA's can back up its bragging. The visuals are almost Xbox and PS3-esque, the gameplay is innovative (if a little hard to get used to) and the soundtrack is awesome.

Back at the iPad 2 announcement on March 2nd, Steve Jobs promised the new A5 dual core processor and up to nine times better graphics would allow gaming developers to reach new heights for a portable device. You feel we're only just scratching the surface here.

Subsidised iPad 2 to be available on Three in the UK

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:34 AM PDT

Second-gen iPad to land on Three

UK mobile network provider Three has revealed it is to stock the iPad 2 when it launches in the UK with a number of exclusive data plans.

Three, which offered the original generation Apple iPad with 15GB of monthly data for £20 per month and an initial £99 fee, has declared it will offer the “iPad 2 with Wi-Fi + 3G and also dedicated data plans for the iPad 2 in the coming weeks,” but failed to reveal what the data plans will entail.

Whilst Vodafone and Everything Everywhere partners T-Mobile and Orange have all revealed they are to stock the iPad 2 following its UK arrival on March 25th, Three looks set to once again wait to see what other data plans are offered before continuing its run of undercutting its competitors on iDevices.

Having launched in the US last week, Apple has reported stock shortages on the iPad 2 with shipping for online orders now topping the four to five week time frame. The iPad 2 was officially unveiled by Steve Jobs earlier this month with the widely expected inclusion of front and rear facing cameras, a dual-core processor and a slimmer, lighter form factor.

Will you be picking up and iPad 2 when it launches in the UK next week? If so will you be going direct to Apple or through a network provider? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. While you await the iPad 2's UK arrival check out the top 10 things to do once it arrives.

Ofcom ruling to introduce new price cap on calls to mobiles

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 05:42 AM PDT

New Ofcom caps to cut calls to mobile

Ofcom has today announced mobile network providers are to have a new lower cap enforced on the rates they can charge landline operators to connect calls to mobile phones.

Set to kick into action on April 1st, the cap will only apply to the UK’s big four networks, O2, Vodafone, Three and Everything Everywhere, formerly Orange and T-Mobile independently, with smaller network providers such as Virgin Media and Tesco Mobile to be given their own rates “to be set on a fair a reasonable basis.”

With the major networks to be capped at 2.66 pence per minute from April 1st, Ofcom’s ruling will see prices continue to fall until they reach the target low of 0.69 pence per minute between 2014 and 2015. Whilst it is hoped that landline operators will pass these savings on to customers, it is expected that mobile networks will subsequently raise their consumer costs to recoup the cap losses.

Speaking out on the decision a Everything Everywhere spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with Ofcom’s decision and are currently reviewing the detail and our position as to whether we will appeal.  Our concerns focus on the impact of the decision to our vulnerable pay-as-you-go customers.“ They added: “By applying pure LRIC methodology in setting call termination rates going forward, Ofcom has suggested we recover a larger share of our costs from retail charges.  This may force us to change the pay-as-you-go model as we know it as a large number of these customers will now become uneconomical – making the way our consumers currently buy, use and enjoy their mobiles radically different going forward.”

A Terminate the Rate spokesman said: “Ofcom has acknowledged that lower mobile termination rates are better for consumers and committed to reducing them to less than a penny, which raises the question: why can’t those benefits be realised sooner?  In the long term, this is a win for consumers: cutting mobile termination rates supports competition and better deals for all that call mobiles.”

BT, a key player in the recent ‘Terminate the Rate’ campaign, has become the first landline operator to declare it will extend savings to customers with Managing Director Consumer of BT Retail, John Petter, announcing: "Ofcom has made some worthwhile reductions in mobile termination rates, which will benefit customers in the near future.” He added: “Our focus is now on developing an all-inclusive package that will enable people to call mobiles from their landlines at no extra cost, with no fear of 'bill shock'. This will be incredibly good news for BT's customers."

Do you think you will end up seeing the savings of the new caps or will the fees simply be added on elsewhere? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Bon Jovi: Apple's Steve Jobs is 'killing the music business'

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:31 AM PDT

Jobs gives love (of music) a bad name...

Despite currently resting up from illness and receiving mostly well-wishing from those around him, Steve Jobs has been the victim of an unlikely verbal attack from none other than 80s demi-god Jon Bon Jovi. The star, in an interview with the Sunday Times Magazine, claimed that Apple’s CEO is "personally responsible for killing the music business."

Jovi’s reasoning for this is that the instant gratification offered up by services such as iTunes has taken away from some of the magic of discovering music. He continued: "Kids today have missed the whole experience of putting the headphones on, turning it up to 10, holding the jacket, closing their eyes and getting lost in an album.

"The beauty of taking your allowance money and making a decision based on the jacket, not knowing what the record sounded like, and looking at a couple of still pictures and imagining it.

Apple's payment shake-up
- Read how Apple's payment models have changed business

"I hate to sound like an old man now," Jovi continues, "but I am, and you mark my words, in a generation from now people are going to say: 'What happened?'. Steve Jobs is personally responsible for killing the music business."

Is Jon Bon Jovi right, or is he looking for someone to blame for losing touch with Da Kidz? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 handsets delayed until 2012?

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:17 AM PDT

Microsoft and Nokia in joint venture delay shocker

Just weeks after Nokia and Microsoft revealed a surprise joint venture, the upcoming fleet of Nokia produced Windows Phone 7 devices look to have been delayed until 2012, new reports suggest.

Reports of the early but substantial delays comes direct from Nokia India’s Managing Director, D Shivakumar, who has told the country’s Daily News Nokia will delay the release of Phone 7 handsets by up to a year as it is not interested in the Microsoft mobile OS in its current form.

With the recent Phone 7 software update bricking a number of Samsung handsets and failing to deliver on user’s wants and needs, a more substantial OS overhaul, codenamed Mango, was expected to land in October this year before rumours began circulating around a postponement until early 2012. A source at Microsoft last week claimed the company’s initial timeframe is “a near impossibility.”

Set to bring multitasking, Internet Explorer 9 compatibility and partial HTML 5 support, amongst numerous other new features, to the emerging mobile OS, delays to the Mango update could see the Phone 7 operating system short of handsets as well as happy users.

Will Windows Phone 7 change Nokia’s recent fortunes? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola Droid 3 spied

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:03 AM PDT

No specs yet, but release of next-gen Moto phones shouldn't be far off.

The Motorola Droid 3 has just posed for a spanking new spy shot. And what’s more, two other new blowers, the Droid X2 and Motorola Targa, have also spotted by the same keen Moto fan.

The Droid 3 appears to have the same slideout keyboard as its successors, while the Droid X 2 promises to be a US-only affair, just like the current model.

The Motorola Targa is a touchscreen-only device, rocking a beefed-up camera if the protrusion round the back is anything to go by. Sadly, there are no specs to go with any of the pics, but the Droids will most likely get the official nod before summer.

HTC 10-inch Honeycomb tablet to launch

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:32 AM PDT

Samsung 8.9-inch tablet revealed in listing

HTC could be set to launch a 10-inch tablet running on Android Honeycomb after training material from US retailer Staples indicated that a follow up to the 7-inch HTC Flyer is on the way.

The revealing training guide which you can see here, also indicates that the expected 10-inch tablets from Dell, Acer and Toshiba are 'coming soon' along with the Samsung 8.9-inch tablet which is expected to be officially unveiled at an event on March 22nd.

HTC unveiled its first Android tablet offering at MWC last month, but it seems if this information is proved accurate, the company will be aiming to tackle the likes of the iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 in the near future.

HP TouchPad now set for July

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Boss also says webOS will land on PCs later this year.

The HP TouchPad, the webOS packing iPad 2 rival, will be out in June. That’s the word direct from HP’s CEO Leo Apotheker, crushing rumours that the slate would make an early appearance in April.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP TouchPad video

Source: T3 Tech Videos
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP initially said the TouchPad would be out in “summer”, but in recent weeks gossip mongers have pointed to an Amazon listing and other tidbits to suggest it would be out as soon as next month.

However, Apotheker, speaking at this year’s HP Summit said, “The TouchPad will come out in June and from that date onwards there will be wave after wave of technology coming out to support the webOS platform.”

He added that a beta version of webOS for PCs, running on a browser, would be out before the end of 2011. He added that this wasn’t designed to replace Windows, but to compliment it. He also said HP was open to developing another Windows slate if they had access to, “…the right version of Windows.”

iPad 2: one million sold in first weekend, says analyst

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 02:10 AM PDT

Numbers would account for growing shortages.

The iPad 2 sold one million units in its first weekend on sale across the pond. That’s according to Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland, with other Apple watchers claiming the iPad sold out at every retail store where it was available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apple iPad 2 video

Source: T3 Tech Videos
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sutherland told Reuters, “We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to one million iPad 2's in the opening weekend." This follows news that Best Buy sold its entire iPad 2 consignment in just ten minutes.

If the one million figure is true, Apple will surely be keen to make an official announcement quickly, in order to show competitors just how well it’s doing. The original iPad took 28 days to sell a million.

With shipments now delayed by four to five weeks from Apple’s own online emporium, it seems safe to say that the iPad 2 is the go to gadget of 2011. Have you ordered yours yet? Tell us what you think of the iPad 2 on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Internet Explorer 9 out now

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:53 AM PDT

Hardware acceleration in, but XP support out as Big M takes on Mozilla and Google.

Microsoft has finally pushed Internet Explorer 9 out from its public preview state, talking up its newly-minted browser at a special bash held at South by South West Interactive.

The new-look effort, which was released as a public preview last year, boasts hardware acceleration, meaning it can use a PC’s graphics grunt as well as its regular processor. What’s more, it’s better at detecting viruses in dodgy downloads and comes rocking HTML5 skills.

However, the Big M says it won’t work with Windows XP, as it looks to close the door on its ageing but still ubiquitous operating system. Microsoft says it wants to concentrate on, “…pushing the web forward.” With Firefox, Chrome and Safari all snapping at its heels, that’s hardly a surprise.

Have you snagged IE9 yet? Tell us what you think of Microsoft’s new effort on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 2 supplies stretched as delays get longer

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:37 AM PDT

High demand means iPad 2 is already running low.

Demand for the iPad 2 in the United States is so high that Apple says there’s a four to five week wait for the second-gen slate to ship from its online store. The news comes after many Apple shops ran out of the new iPad on launch date.

Apple stores are opening early to try and cope with punters desperate to lay their hands on the iPad 2, with Cupertino saying there’s been “amazing” demand for the device.

However, with orders taking so long, it seems like only a matter of time before disgruntled punters turn on Apple. And with a 25 March launch slated for the UK, expect us Brits to have to face a similar fate.

Are you planning to get in the queue for an iPad 2? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
