News@8pm: iPad price slash, HTC mobiles leaked

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

The price crash of the original iPad following the announcement of the iPad 2 is well underway, with peddlars of ridiculous deals Groupon teaming up with T-Mobile to offer the original iPad for only £49 on contract. But will anyone really want to be stuck on a two year contract with an iPad that's already looking a little shabby around the edges? Take a look at our iPad 2 unboxing video below to see what you'd be missing.

Still on the subject of the iPad, the tablet's own dedicated newspaper/magazine, The Daily, is set to zap itself over to UK iPads on June 2nd. The Daily has already been a success in the States, where issues cost around 14 cents per day (about eight or nine pence in Blighty).

Capcom and Sega have joined forces to aid the plight of those caught in the Japan earthquake by offering up some classic Megadrive games for iPhone and iPod touch, at discount prices, with all the sales going direct to charities helping the victims. The games, which include Street Fighter and Sonic 2, have also been discounted, if you're not of a naturally altruistic nature.

HTC's next lineup of mobiles has had images and specs leaked ahead of announcement, with the Pyramid, the Prime and the Ignite all papped and their specs outed. With HTC's stock of MWC models still only just arriving on the shelves, they won't be making a proper public appearance for some time, however.

Finally, EA label head Frank Gibeau stirred up the Wii 2 rumour pot in an interview with Industrygamers.com, hinting heavily that the follow up to Nintendo's 70-million selling Wii console would get an official announcement at this year's E3 conference in June. Nintendo are, of course, keeping schtum.

US and Europe to follow Korea with 3D VOD service

Samsung has announced it is to launch a 3D video-on-demand service in its native Korea with plans for a US and European rollout.

Landing in the company’s home nation today, the 3D VOD service is to launch with a variety of content from the DreamWorks studio as 3D films, movie trailers and music videos are all offered up to users touting internet connected 3DTVs. Children’s and educational content will complete the launch offerings.

To be made available via a 3D application in the company’s Smart TV marketplace, Samsung has confirmed that it plans to roll the 3D VOD service out across wider markets in the near future with the US and European markets leading the imminent road map.

Whilst it is currently unknown which European nations will receive the service and on what date this may happen, the UK is widely predicted as one of the first stops for the extra-dimensional on-demand offering.

Would readily available 3D VOD content tempt you in to splashing out on a pricey 3DTV? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google revamps search app for iOS

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 08:01 AM PDT

Google moves away from mobile web search with a dedicated iOS app

Google has launched a new search app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, integrating a host of new search options, a funky new design and the Google Apps suite.

In this self-contained app, web searches can be typed in the traditional way or can be conducted by voice search or image search, which uses the awesome Google Goggles based on photos taken on the device's camera. Users can now sign-in to their Google accounts for customised searches.

When you open the app, you'll see a standard search bar at the top of the screen and an Apps tab at the bottom. Summoning that tab will serve up a list of available apps like Docs, Calendar, Buzz, News, YouTube and the rest of the suite. It will also show you how many unread messages or notifications you have in apps like Gmail and Buzz.

Apps will load either in Safari or through the many standalone apps available in the App Store, such as Google Maps, Google Earth and Google Voice.  The web searches themselves remain within the Google Search app, and a simple swipe to the right reveals a tap for limiting your search to images, videos, shopping and the usual host of options.

It's a fine update from Google, but we'd love to see a lot more of the apps contained within rather than farming things like Gmail and Calendar farmed out to Safari. The Gmail app is brilliant on Android and it'd be great to get one for iOS owners too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 teaser video released online

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 04:54 AM PDT

8.9-inch Samsung tablet expected to join 7-inch and 10.1-inch siblings

Samsung has once again offered a sneak peak of the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab it is widely expected to launch next week as a tantalising teaser video is released online.

Tipped by the Korean tech giant as a “Special Episode” in the series of Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 events, the unveiling, scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida next Tuesday, March 22nd, is expected to see the launch of the latest Samsung Galaxy Tab device, one that will sport a new 8.9-inch form factor.

Offering a few short glimpses of the device’s design, the new leaked video has revealed that the ultra slim looking tablet will come equipped with a rear-mounted camera with an inbuilt flash. Little else is known on the mooted device that is believed to come sporting Google’s latest Android 3.0 tablet specific Honeycomb OS.

If Samsung does choose to officially unveil the Galaxy Tab 8.9 next week it would fall between the US and UK arrivals of Apple’s second generation tablet, the iPad 2 and precede the official May launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was unveiled at Mobile World Congress last month with a dual-core processor and front and rear mounted cameras.

Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover clone lands

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 04:32 AM PDT

First iPad 2 Smart Cover imitator surfaces

The first clone of the Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover has arrived in the shape of the PixelSkin HD Wrap case.

- PixelSkin HD Wrap case pictures

The third party iPad 2 add-on which is available from Speck, shares more than a passing resemblance to the official accessory shown off with the iPad 2 at the beginning of the month.

With a 'stylish matte finish', the PixelSkin case enables you to fold for prime viewing and typing, just like the Smart Cover. Notably however, there's no sign of those magnets, but in its place you'll find micro suction to keep your next gen Apple tablet tucked away snug.

Priced in at $49.95, it's cheaper than the leather Smart Cover ($69), but more expensive than the polyurethane version ($39).

If the PixelSkin HD Wrap case doesn't take your fancy, you can always check out our round up of the best iPad 2 cases and accessories here.

HTC Pyramid, Prime and Ignite spied

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 04:01 AM PDT

Specced up Pyramid leads the line of new HTC blowers.

Renders of a trio of new HTC phones have just hit the web. The Taiwanese tech titan only recently touted its latest line-up at MWC, but with the likes of the Desire S and Incredible S soon hitting shelves, these new numbers look like they’ll be dominating the rumour mill for some time.

First up is the HTC Pyramid. Rumoured to come with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, it packs in a 4.3-inch 960x540 panel, 768MB of RAM, an 8 megapixel snapper slapped on the back and a 1.3MP peeper up front.

The HTC Ignite and Prime are both Windows Phone 7 handsets, the former coming with a 3.7-inch screen and 5MP camera. The latter packs in the same specs, but with a slideout keyboard for tapping out texts.

There’s no news on when these cells will be out in the wild, but expect to see and hear plenty more about them before they get official.

T-Mobile and Groupon join forces to offer iPad for £49

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:59 AM PDT

Original iPad price cuts continue ahead of iPad 2 arrival

Network provider T-Mobile has teamed up with deals website Groupon to offer the original Apple iPad tablet for just £49.

With the iPad 2 set to touch down on British soil in under two weeks, T-mobile has announced it is to join forces with Groupon to shift the last on the original-generation tablet stock with the market leading tablet going for under £50 with a two year contract.

Having signed up to the daily deals site Groupon, those looking to snag themselves an original iPad on the cheap will be able to pick up a 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G model on a two year deal that will set them back a further £25 per month if they are an existing T-Mobile customer, or £27 per month if they are new to the network.

Whilst this cut-price deal might seem like a money saver at first glance, rival Three is currently offering the original Apple tablet for £99 with the two year contract to cost consumers just £20 per month with 15GB of inclusive data. Although forking out more upfront, those taking up Three’s offer will save £70 over two years on those snapping up the T-Mobile, Groupon deal.

As the UK prepares for the arrival of the iPad 2 on March 25th, T-Mobile, its Everything Everywhere partner Orange, Vodafone and Three have all announced they will stock the upcoming device, O2 has said it will not be offering subsidised iPad 2s. Further details of the network’s respective iPad 2 deals and data rates is currently unknown.

Nintendo 3DS: New Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition ad

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:47 AM PDT

Eminem-style rap reaches out to Da Kidz

Capcom has launched its official trailer for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition on the Nintendo 3DS, which is currently showing on US TV.

The ludicrously over-the-top ad harks back to the days when gaming trailers were all about flashing images and loud noises, utilising… well, flashing images and loud noises. Note the cheesy rap, obviously aimed at enticing the yoofs of today, what with its edginess.

That said, that game itself does look top drawer, and the test build we played a few weeks back definitely impressed. It’ll launch on March 25th, along with the 3DS console. See the trailer below:

Nintendo Wii 2 to be announced at E3 in June?

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:38 AM PDT

Follow-up to Nintendo's motion-controlled cash cow may finally make its appearance at this year's E3.

We've already heard talk of Nintendo gearing up to announce the Wii 2 at E3, and now Frank Gibeau, label head at EA games, has chucked in his two cents on the rumours, calling the Wii a "legacy console" and hinting that Nintendo are indeed putting together an updated version of the bestselling, motion-controlled console.

"When you look at Nintendo, for a while there, it was all about the Wii being the biggest entertainment platform ever and capturing the mass market, and it faded away." Gibeau told Industrygamers.com. "Now, they’re coming back with a second act."

Gibeau also hinted that the next Nintendo Wii would be able to compete more directly with its two biggest rivals, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360: "[Nintendo] understand the dynamics and the fact that HD consoles is a booming part of business right now. Legacy platforms like PS2 and the Wii have dropped off significantly. They’re not stupid. They’re going to figure something out. They’re going to come back at it."

Rumours on the interweb are that the Wii 2 will boast a quad-core processor, HD screen and some kind of LED projector. Is Nintendo about to introduce us to some form of projector-based gaming as weird as motion controllers seemed in 2006? We'll know, fingers crossed, come June.

BlackBerry PlayBook FaceTime rival planned

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:21 AM PDT

RIM reveals plans to take on FaceTime with dedicated app for new tablet.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is set to get its own dedicated video conferencing app. That’s the word from the Canadian company’s David Heit, who says the new offering will be available, “…very soon.”

The new effort will be seen as a direct competitor to Apple’s FaceTime, which is now available on the iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod touch. Until now, it had been assumed that the front and rear-facing cameras on the PlayBook would utilise a third party video app like Skype.

Heit refused to hand over specific details, but the timeframe suggests this will be sitting pretty on the PlayBook at release. The iPad-battler is due out in early April, six months after it was first announced.

Enough to make you buy a PlayBook? Or has RIM left its slate’s release too late? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Microsoft Zune gets the chop

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Insider claims Zune focus will shift to Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft is killing off its Zune MP3 player, five years after it was first released in an attempt to stymy the dominance of Apple’s iPod. The news comes from a Bloomberg report, which says it garnered the info, “…from a person familiar with the decision”.

The source claims that “tepid demand” has caused Redmond to have a rethink about its iPod rival, which has only ever been released in North America. Zune software can currently be found on Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360.

Microsoft declined to comment on the speculation, but said, “Our long-term strategy focuses on the strength of the entire Zune ecosystem across Microsoft platforms.” With the MP3 market down in decline as smartphones take over, surely killing off the Zune is a smart move.

What do you think? Should the Big M kiss goodbye to its Zune player? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPad 2 Japan launch delayed

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 12:42 AM PDT

Apple refuses to set new date as Japan reels from earthquake fall out.

Apple has decided to delay the release of the iPad 2 in Japan, following last week’s earthquake, tsunami and continuing nuclear crisis.

Cupertino released a statement last night saying, “We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster.” The iPad 2 has been scheduled to launch on 25 March, the same day the UK. No new release date has been set.

The move comes as Apple and others look to distance themselves from the frivolity of technology in the wake of one of the 21st centuries worst natural disasters. The company has been letting people use its stores to attempt to contact loved ones and take shelter.

Nokia tablet detailed

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 12:30 AM PDT

Year-old drawing suggests Nokia tablet has already been shelved.

A Nokia tablet was gossiped over avidly last year, yet never materialised. But now new drawings, released by the US Patent and Trademark office, show just what Espoo had planned.

We say had, because the pics date from May last year, which points to this being a MeeGo slate. With Nokia having relegated its open source OS in favour of Windows Phone 7, it seems this tab will never actually hit the shelves.

The Nokia tablet appears to clock in around 9-inches, with design quirks taken from the Nokia N8. As well as this design, Nokia also set out plans for a different slate, which eschewed N8 styling.

With Windows Phone 7 not heading to tablets, it’s highly unlikely Nokia will releases these tabs any time soon. But with Windows 8 round the corner, perhaps it’ll see fit to release something similar in 2012.
