Posted: 26 Mar 2011 05:51 AM PDT

Will 120 stations by wi-fi equipped in time for the London Olympics?

By 2012, 120 London Tube stations will have Wi-fi hotspots, according to Transport for London.

The plans to roll out wi-fi to tube stations have gained momentum with the 2012 London Olympics around the corner.

The connection currently used by 16 stations' staff will be made available to the public as part of the first phase of this operation before further expansion.

Charing Cross is part of an ongoing trial, where passengers can avail of BT internet. However, wi-fi will not be available on the trains; just on the platform.

TfL is on the hunt for bidders in time to debut the underground wi-fi service by summer of 2012.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play release delayed on O2 UK

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Looks like we'll have to wait for the white Xperia Play for a while longer

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will not be released on April 1 by O2 UK, which we'll remind techies holds the honour of having exclusivity over the white Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Stuart Hibberd, head of O2's testing team said his team's job is to ensure the phones are ready for the end-user market and that they rigorously test each handset. Regarding the Xperia Play, Hibberd said, "We’ve been testing the phone non-stop for weeks and have found some bugs in the software that, if they’re not fixed, means customers won’t have a great experience."

He assures readers that these bugs will be fixed. He continued, "We’ve been working with Sony Ericsson to get these bugs ironed out, but haven’t been able to get them fixed in time for us to be able to launch the phone on April 1st as we originally planned."

He reminded us that O2 UK will soon be selling the exclusive white handset, and promised updates on the delay.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is also known as the PlayStation phone, and boats a game controller panel with a touchscreen. It's powered up by Android Gingerbread.

Other network operators offering the Xperia Play, such as Vodafone and Orange, have not yet announced any delays with the April 1 release date.

Will you wait for O2 to release the Xperia Play? Let us know how this affects you at T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and follow us for the latest news in the smartphone world.

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Nintendo 3DS consoles flying off shelves at midnight

The Nintendo 3DS finally launched in the UK and its midnight launch attracted a large number of gamers.

Stores such as GAME, Gamestation, HMV and more opened their doors at midnight, and got hundreds of people queueing outside their stores to get their hands on the glassless 3D console.

GAME opened 482 branches for a midnight launch as well as early the next morning. "Our GAME and Gamestation stores saw hundreds of gamers queue up to finally get their hands on the Nintendo 3DS," said head of UK comms and PR Neil Ashurst, to MCV.

He also added that they've received great feedback about the 3DS living up to all the expectations.

The Nintendo 3DS has both 2D and 3D modes in which to play games, and various stores were offering deals for the console for the midnight opening. It also broke Amazon's pre-order record.

Check out the video of the Nintendo 3DS:

App week: Android Appstore arrives, iMovie review

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

American Amazon Android Appstore Arrives
We've waited an age for the Amazon Appstore for Android, but unless we up sticks to the US we're going to have to wait a little bit longer. The rival to the Android Market is live in the US exclusively bearing Angry Birds Rio for free, but Amazon says there's no immediate plans to roll out the store in Europe. Check out our review of the Amazon Appstore from the US.

Angry Birds Rio is here... but just for iOS
In light of the lack of an Amazon Appstore, Android owners in the UK are sans Angry Birds Rio.  But iOS device owners are quids in with the latest release from Rovio. The new game is a tie-in with the movie release of the same name and sees our favourite winged menaces head to Brazil to rescue some kidnapped pals. It's 59p for iPhone and £1.79 for the HD iPad version.

Color, a new photo-based social network
According to $41m of Silicon Valley investment, this app is the next big thing. Color uses GPS and your phone's camera lens to create a photostream from people in your local vicinity and gives you the opportunity to connect with folks in your "elastic network" of people also posting using the app. So, for example if you're at a music festival and see a lot of folks taking pictures during the Kings of Leon set, you can comment on their photo and they'll have the opportunity to get in touch. Cool idea. We'll see if it takes off. It's available on iPhone now and coming to Android.

Apple removes 'gay cure' app
Usually Apple is ahead of the game with the almighty whip of censorship, but it's taken them a while to get rid of this rather dubious entry to the App Store. The Exodus International app, which claimed to offer 'freedom from homosexuality,' has been removed after 150,000 people signed an online petition.

Keep an eye on your favourite blockbusters-to-be
The world's favourite movie encyclopedia has greenlit its new iOS app which allows film fans to keep track on their favourite upcoming titles with the new Watchlist feature. The new upgrade also features and improved movie showtimes database and the chance to buy tickets via the site. There's also the joys of playing back trailers on your TV via AirPlay.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

There's AirPlay and then there's AirVideo
If you're constantly hindered by the paltry 16GB storage on your iOS device and tired of the long hours converting your video files into an Apple-friendly format this app can solve both of those woes. AirVideo uses Wi-Fi to automatically convert files from your computer and play them back on your iPhone or iPad. Perfect if you're on a plane ride equipped with Wi-Fi.

An old-school platformer with new-school charm
"Essentially, it's Mario diluted into bite-sized smartphone chunks" says our Android app expert of this 2D platform adventure. You are in charge of a little black monster who roams a 2D landscape eating diamonds and growing big and strong in the hope of being eaten by a bigger monster and moving onto the next level. They Need To Be Fed is a fun game, costs under a buck and our reviewer awards it an almost-perfect four stars.

If you're buying an iPad 2 today...
Then this app has to be among the first you download for your shiny new tablet. The new iMovie app for iPad is a brilliantly self-contained package that allows you to shoot, trim, edit, add sheen, music and titles to your creation and then upload it to the www. directly from your iPad. If you don't believe us, check out this package produced completely using the device.

Tech Week: iPad 2 and Nintendo 3DS launch

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The top stories from the past week in gadgets.

News of the Week

More as yet hush-hush handsets made early appearances this week, with the Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini appearing on a leaked spec sheet from Three, the HTC Pyramid popping up in some new spy shots and the HTC Evo 3D getting its specs spilled all over the interweb.

The Nintendo 3DS arrived on the shores of Blighty with a midnight launch, and a designer from Microsoft has let slip that the next iteration of the Xbox will be with us by 2015. Also on the subject of gaming, we also heard that Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed. Again.

In Apple news, the big A sued Amazon for its use of the term "App Store", while Apple themselves got into hot water when it transpired they had OK'd an app in their own App Store that offered to "cure" homosexuals. We also got solid (ish) information that a white and a silver model of the iPhone 5 will be available at launch. Finally, hundreds of devout Apple worshippers gathered outside the UK Apple Store ahead of the 5pm Friday Apple iPad 2 launch, and to reward them, we put out a special, free, iPad 2-centric edition of T3 for them to download.

Features of the Week

With the iPad 2 launching this Friday, guess what our features of the week focussed on? We published our comprehensive guide to Apple's new tablet, as well as our new monthly guide to the best paid and free iPad apps available to download. And if you have just blagged one of the new iPads, here's T3's Team Apple's reccomendations on what to do the moment it's out of the box.

With the other big launch of the week coming from Nintendo, we also released our top reasons to pick yourself up a 3DS. And if neither this nor the iPad 2 float your boat, we've also got pieces on the 11 great internet firsts and a DIY guide to becoming famous on Twitter.

Reviews of the Week

Of course this week we have an iPad 2 review, complete with video, to accompany the UK launch, as well as one for one of its strongest competitors, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. And if you do plump for Samsung's (or indeed Motorola's or LG's) tablet offering over the iPad 2, you'll be wanting to check out our Android Honeycomb 10 things review, too. Also on test was the week's other new arrival, the Nintendo 3DS.

Finally, on the music front we reviewed ace DJ'ing tool the Korg Kaoss Pad Quad, and for those preferring to limit their choons to the bedside table, the cracking Pure Contour iPod dock and radio combo.
