News@8pm: iPad 2 delays and HTC handsets leak

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

HTC leakier than Liza's bucket this week with specs and images of two of its upcoming flagship phones appearing at least a week before their announcement. While not much is known about the HTC Pyramid the size of the device suggests that its not going to be wanting for features and the blurry spy shots we've seen seem to display an attractive case design leaving us eager for more details. Meanwhile another clumsy HTC employee seems to have lost his spec sheet for the rumoured HTC EVO 3D. Glasses-free 3D, powerful internals and dual stereoscopic cameras on the back suggest this could be a game-changing device

Apple faces criticism after its widely-touted closed-walled app store somehow let in an app that claims to cure homosexuality. Previously Apple's self-righteous policy has removed adult-themed and politically charged applications from the app store, the public have reacted in outcry at the latest slip in the cracks. Meanwhile one app developer that seems to be doing things right is Rovio, whose success has spurred them on to decide to float on the NYSE.We'll have to wait and see whether the plucky developer flies or falls.

iOS4.3 drains battery life as the introduction of Ping seems to cause power management woes. Users have experienced a return to the previous levels of power economy upondisabling the Ping service via the settings menu (video included). And with Czech and Japanese launch dates of the iPad 2 delayed it seems that Apple really can't catch a break lately. The earthquake in Japan is one of the reasons cited, causing low stock levels whilst high demand in America certainly hasn't helped the situation

Android Market rival, the Amazon Appstore will launch tomorrow after going live temporarily a few days ago. Android seems poised to undercut Google's own Market by selling some of the exact same apps for cheaper prices. Sony, on the other hand are not starting a pricing war but instead want to raise the bar of mobile gaming positioning its own Android store somewhere between hardcore and casual. Android users just got a lot more options when it comes to kitting out their phones.

Next-generation Xbox console to officially launch in 2015

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:23 AM PDT

Micrsoft's next Xbox console not coming until 2015

The next-generation Xbox games console from Microsoft is to launch in 2015 according to a designer who has worked with the tech giant on the upcoming release.

Discussing the next-gen Xbox via his online portfolio, designer Ben Peterson revealed some wildly speculative information around the follow-up to the Xbox 360 with a mysteriously enigmatic image of the future console being unveiled.

Joining the angled, close-up snap of what is claimed to be the mooted Xbox 720, Peterson wrote: "Microsoft Xbox. Confidential / Collaboration with Microsoft's IEB design group investigating future user experiences and hardware for 2015. *Work samples only permissible in person.* (March 2011)."

Despite Peterson’s claims appearing seemingly unfounded and far from confirmed a 2015 release date for the next-gen console has been previously hinted at by Microsoft with the company having said it sees the recently released Kinect peripheral taking the current model to that far off date. Further speculation of an in the works replacement was sparked recently after Microsoft began advertising hardware design roles for the new console.

Will the next-gen Xbox console be a staggering step forward in the gaming industry or have we reached a plateau? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

QuickCam iOS app speeds up photo capabilities

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:20 AM PDT

The fastest camera app in the ol' App Store.

The iPhone 4's 5-megapixel, 720p camera might be a dramatic improvement on previous iterations of the device, but for some it's just not quick enough and that's where QuickCam comes in.

The new app for iPhone and iPod touch (it'll also work on iPad, but you'll need to double the size to fit the screen) boasts a much quicker start time than its built-in counterpart, which is ideal if you're trying to capture a moment at very short notice.

One the app has opened you can fire off as many snaps as you like without waiting for the camera lens graphic to reopen, you just need to keep hitting the capture button and they'll be instantly exported to your photo library.

This piece of functionality is perfect for taking pictures at sporting events or anything which requires you to capture a moving target.

In another little bonus, you can also take snaps at the camera's full resolution while recording video, which is something iOS device owners are unable to do with the stock app. There's also pinch to zoom, tap-to-focus and for iPhone owners you can use the flash as a video light.

It's not all perfect though. There's no direct access to your photo and video library, so you have to exit the app to access and share your creations and there's no on-screen timer when recording video. Naturally, the iPhone offers all of these things, plus the ability to trim your video clip from within the app.

It's available now for a launch price of 59, so if you want to speed up your iPhone's photography skills it's definitely worth a look.

Apple under fire having approved 'gay cure' app

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:06 AM PDT

Exodus International iPhone app causes headache for Apple

Apple has found itself under fire from users and gay rights activists having approved a so called ‘gay cure’ app that claims to offer users “freedom from homosexuality.”

Exodus International, an iPhone and iPad app released last month by a religious ministry of the same name, is reported to have received more than 80,000 complaints having hit the Apple App Store and being deemed by the Cupertino tech giant as containing “no objectionable content.”

According to the controversial religious group, Exodus International and its new app release can give users “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus.”

Despite Apple’s notoriously strict constraints about what can and cannot be included in iOS based applications, the company that will not allow nudity or pornographic images within apps seemingly happily passed an app that according to its iTunes listing “is committed to encouraging, educating and equipping the Body of Christ to address the issue of homosexuality with grace and truth.”

Having caused an outcry within the gay community, Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of the gay rights group Stonewall announced of the Exodus International release: "At Stonewall, we've all been on this app since 8am and we can assure your readers it's having absolutely no effect.” He added: "Apple might consider thinking about their customer base and the penchant many lesbian and gay people have for ethical consumerism when endorsing an offensive app like this."

It is not just the gay community which is objecting to the release and acceptance of this app, however, iTunes account holders have hit out at Apple with a number of users criticising the company’s decisions. Whilst one user dubbed ‘Big fan…………..’ declared on the app’s App Store page: “This is hateful and contemptible. It does not belong on the App Store,” other users have shared equal disgust.

Whilst adam.iphone said: “How can Apple have let this app pass? This app is promoting religion based bullying and homophobia,” LanguageLearnerURDU wrote: “A disgusting homophobic app that Apple should not have allowed. Shame on you Apple!”

Should Apple have allowed the Exodus International app into the App Store? Let us know what you think of the so called ‘gay cure’ app via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iOS 4.3 touting iPhones and iPads suffer battery issues

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Ping causes battery loss on iPhone and iPad devices

Whilst battery life has never been the iPhone’s strongpoint, the recent update to iOS 4.3 appears to have further knocked the handset’s power supply with Apple’s social music service Ping reportedly to blame.

A new addition to the latest iOS release, Ping, the social music service that allows iTunes users to follow their favourite artists and be privy to special playlists, has been accused of shortening the battery life of iPhone and iPad devices with tests reportedly showing increased power economy with the service disabled.

Accessible via device’s general settings and the ‘Restrictions’ section, users can disengage the battery supping service with a simple swipe of Apple’s trademark on, off buttons. With Ping disabled it is reported that battery usage times will return to something similar to those pre-iOS 4.3 installation.

iOS 4.3 was set live recently to preceed the US launch of the Apple iPad 2, the first device to come preinstalled with the the company’s latest rendition of the mobile OS.

Angry Birds developer planning to float on the NYSE

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Angry Birds Developer, Rovio, to launch aerial attack on NYSE

Rovio, the gutsy Finnish developer behind the runaway sensation that is the Angry Birds franchise, revealed recently that it has big plans and intends to float on the New York Stock Exchange.

After an impressive round of funding backed by Accel Partners, the venture capital firm that spotted Facebook in its infancy, Rovio has raised $42m in backing.

Spurred on by the company's resounding success, Chairman of the Board, Kaj Hed has told Finnish magazine Talouselämä "Our goal is to become number one in the world".  Whilst Hed may seem slightly optimistic at this early stage, his figures are certainly impressive with Rovio pulling in upwards of $50m in revenue from downloads, stuffed toy sales and licensing deals.

Keen to continue expanding, Rovio has taken Angry Birds just about everywhere with a release on the PS3 in January and plans to enter the social gaming space of Facebook in May.  However the question remains, are they actually diversifying or simply growing the same tired brand - how long will the world remain transfixed by our fun, feathery friends?

Will Rovio become the next Wall Street wonder or will another app come along and steal our fickle hearts?

iPad 2 launch delayed ahead of Friday's global rollout

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:24 AM PDT

Second-gen iPad hits delays in launch week

Apple has revealed the launch of the iPad 2 will be postponed in the Czech Republic, fuelling fears of widespread delays to the tablet’s global rollout this Friday, March 25th.

Originally pegged to receive the second-generation Apple tablet alongside 25 other nations this Friday, Czech Apple fans will now follow those residing in Japan in having to wait until April 25th to get their hands on the slimmed down device following high demand in the US and the earthquake in Japan effecting stock levels.

With the UK set to join nations such as Canada, Australia and Spain in hosting the iPad 2 later this week, fears have been raised that the stock issues will limit availability of the in-demand tablet on launch day with further delays expected.

Unveiled earlier this month with the widely expected addition of front and rear facing cameras, the new A5 dual-core processor and a dramatically slimmer, flat-backed form factor, the iPad 2 officially launched in the US recently with a reported 1 million units being sold in the US throughout the opening weekend.

As speculation mounts surrounding stock shortages causing release delays for a UK market, an Apple spokesperson has reportedly quashed concerns announcing: "Everything that is on the website still holds true; the website says 25 March and that's when it'll be."

Will you be queuing outside one of the UK’s Apple stores this Friday in order to snap up an iPad 2? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Pyramid: new spy shot revealed

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Blurry snap appears after leaked renders hit web last week.

HTC’s Pyramid hasn’t been given the official nod yet. But that hasn’t stopped it dominating Android-flavoured headlines in recent days. Following a leaked render, now a blurry spy shot his hit the web, showing the phone in all its glory.

Take a peep at the snap on the left. The HTC Pyramid is the phone on the left, next to a Desire HD. That suggests it has a 4.3-inch screen, seeing as both phones are the same size.

There’s a camera on the rear left, with dual LED flash, while that striped-design matches previously released snaps.

Unfortunately, that’s all the detail there is for now. But with HTC seemingly releasing a constant stream of top-end handsets these days, expect to see a lot more of this capacious effort in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini: April release date leaked by Three

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 03:56 AM PDT

But would you really call it 'mini'?

What’s in a name? Shakespeare wasn’t that sure, meaning he’d probably be flummoxed by this: a smartphone with ‘Mini’ in the name that’s actually got a 3.7-inch screen. The handset in question is the Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini, which has been leaked by Three mobile ahead of launch.

Aside from rocking a display bigger than the iPhone’s, the S2 Mini has a 1.4GHz processor, runs Android Gingerbread and boasts both a 5-Meg camera with flash and a VGA front-facing webcam. There;s also WiFi, GPS and all the other gubbins you’d expect form a top end Android handset.

Three calls the phone, a companion to the larger-still Galaxy S2, a ‘High End’ phone, and the spec sheet suggests it’ll land in April. Stay tuned for a review as soon as we can get one. Interested in the S2 Mini? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

HTC Flyer and BlackBerry Playbook tablets to hit Three

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 03:55 AM PDT

HTC and BlackBerry tablets coming to Three within months

UK mobile provider Three has seen its future product roadmap leak with upcoming tablets the HTC Flayer and the BlackBerry PlayBook both set to land on the network.

Appearing alongside a host of other leaked devices including the Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini, both the Flayer and the PlayBook have appeared as coming to Three with arrival dates pegged on alongside the awaited tablet attempts from two of the mobile industry’s leading players.

Having been officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress last month, HTC’s first foray into the tablet market is reported as heading for a May release on the Three network with BlackBerry’s PlayBook, first unveiled back in September set to follow the Flyer with a June arrival.

Both featuring a 7-inch form factor the Flyer will launch running Google’s Android 2.4 operating system, Gingerbread whilst the PlayBook runs the new QNX OS. With the PlayBook hosting a 1GHz dual-core processor compared to the stylus-touting Flyer which sports a single 1.5GHz processor, the BlackBerry tablet completes its incoming specs with front and rear facing cameras and 1GB of RAM.

Sony: PlayStation Suite sits between hardcore and casual

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 03:45 AM PDT

Sony says research shows gamers want quality games on their smartphone.

PlayStation Suite, Sony’s Android gaming store which will sit pretty on a string of Google phones as well as its NGP, has been talked up by Sony Europe gaming boss Andrew House, who says the service will be aimed somewhere between casual and hardcore.

In an interview with MCV, House said, “Our feeling, and our research bears this out, is that there's potential for an audience that sits in-between [hardcore and casual]. An audience that wants a more quality gaming experience than they currently get from the mobile space - but they want the convenience of having that on their smartphone.”

House continued, “We thought if we were to open up the PlayStation experience towards a greater variety of Android devices, then we can perhaps serve that market.”

It could be argued that by opening PlayStation Suite up to all Android phones, the service will be the ultimate casual gaming portal. But with Apple still battering Android in the gaming stakes, there’s no denying PlayStation Suite has the potential to cause Cupertino a headache.

Amazon Appstore launching 22 March?

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 03:06 AM PDT

New service finally ready for launch after lengthy wait and slew of leaks.

The Amazon Appstore for Android will finally launch tomorrow, just days after the service went live temporarily, showing off the online retail giant’s plans to undercut Google’s Android Market.

That’s the word from a “trusted source” speaking to Wired.com, who said the service was ready to roll. It comes over six months since Amazon first announced the service.

As revealed last week, Amazon plans to sell a string of popular Android apps cheaper than Android Market. It will also come with a number of exclusive add-ons, in an attempt to encourage Android users to download the store onto their phones.

As well as buying apps from the dedicated Amazon Appstore mobile portal, punters will also be able to nab them online via Amazon’s website. There’ll even be the option to preload phones, bought via Amazon, with add-ons from its app emporium.

Can Amazon see off Android Market and become the go-to place for Google-backed apps? Let us know what you think via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

New MacBook Pros: more problems emerge

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 01:48 AM PDT

Issues follow last week's problems with iTunes Home Sharing.

The new MacBook Pro line-up is suffering from yet more problems, with the top-end laptops reportedly crashing under heavy load. The news follows last week’s reports of the updated machines struggling to work with iTunes Home Sharing.

Discussion threads on MacRumors and Apple’s official pages point to the fact that this isn’t an isolated problem. One user has complained that his trackpad and keyboard refused to work while the temperature of his MacBook Pro soared to 90 degrees.

Among the 567 replies on Apple’s discussions boards, one user said, “The fans revved and suddenly I could use nothing but the cursor. Had to hold down the power switch to kill all and then re-power & startup. I wasn't doing anything unusual, but I had 7 apps open and was amid an auto-backup to TimeMachine.”

Apple is apparently aware of the problem, which is said to be down an issue with the graphics driver and can apparently be fixed with a software update to OS X. Still, this is an embarrassing incident for Cupertino as it looks to push its MacBook Pros as the best laptops in the world.

MobileMe update: new details back April launch

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 01:43 AM PDT

Existing users will get support for another year as Apple readies update.

Once again chatter about Apple’s plans to reboot its MobileMe service is sweeping the web, with a new report claiming Cupertino will unleash its new offering in April. Previous rumours have suggested it would be revealed at a special iOS 5 event next month.

iLounge says it’s got word from a “trusted source” who says the tech supplier at the educational institute where they work has said Apple is no longer offering paid-for MobileMe subscriptions. Students should instead get the free 60 day trial package, with a new version launching next month.

What’s more, the source says the current edition of MobileMe will be supported for another year. That points to the upgrade being a significant shift from the current iteration, and that punters may need to sign up all over again for the service if they wish to continue using it.

Previous chatter has suggested MobileMe will be gratis, offering a digital locker for stashing music, movies and files. Some have even claimed that there’ll be a personal website for each user, with love video streaming and status updates, making MobileMe more of a social network.

Stay tuned right here and to our Twitter and Facebook pages for more on this story as it happens.
