News@8pm: iPad2 release, iPhone 5 blueprints

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

No prizes for guessing today's top story: at Apple stores across the States today, folks have been lining up in their thousands to get their mitts on Apple's latest wunder-gadget, the iPad 2, despite reports that Apple's share of the tablet market has dropped to 73% in the wake of the Android onslaught. The first iPad 2s went on sale at 5pm UK time, so keep your browser pointed toward T3.com over the weekend for all the breaking news. Meanwhile, you can check out our exclusive hands-on video below.

Apple fans were further spoiled today by the leaking of several blueprints reportedly showing off the case of the iPhone 5. Real or bogus, those rumours about the next-gen iPhone and its enlarged screen are beginning to pick up some traction...

The Sony Next Generation Platform (or PSP2, as it was previously known) took another shaky step along the road to release with a rumoured November launch date. If the whispering of the internet is to be believed, the NGP will be released simultaneously in all markets in time for Christmas this year.

Also in Sony gaming, the shipment of PS3s that have been sitting under legal lock and key in Holland after LG's claims that Sony pilfered its Blu-Ray technology have been released. LG are said to by paying Sony 130,000 Euros by way of compensation as well as facing hefty fines for any reticence in payments.

And finally, don't let yourself be distracted by the release of the iPad 2 and leaked iPhone 5 design images. No, the real Apple question on everyone's lips is: "when can I snag myself a white iPhone 4?" OK, not really, but just for those three people still itching for the white version of a near-year-old mobile, the alabaster iPhone 4 apparently on its way next month.

Samsung updates 7000/8000 TV ranges after T3 review

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 07:48 AM PST

Better image quality coming your way after T3 review

Samsung has officially issued a firmware update for all series 7000/8000 TVs after a T3 review uncovered several issues with the previous firmware.

Expert T3 AV reviewer Steve May had been testing the Samsung UE55D8000 and uncovered a series of image quality issues with the flagship 8000 series 3DTV.

May said: “Once we explained our test results to the Samsung UK team, the brand's engineers were contacted immediately and a detailed report of our findings was sent to Korea. Within 24 hours, Samsung were back in touch with revised firmware (v.1005). More firmware improvements will undoubtedly be forthcoming, but it was gratifying to be able to contribute to making this set even better before its retail release."

The firmware update addressed two elements that had caused most concern during testing: Motion artefacts created by the set’s Motion Plus picture processor, and 3D crosstalk.

“While not a silver bullet, it was clear that some improvements had been made, particularly with regard to minimising the ringing artefacts seen around moving objects. The differences were subtle but welcome, and reflect an enormous effort by the Samsung engineering team raise the bar in picture quality”, said May.

Samsung has declined to comment officially.

Weird News: Apple gets lazy, lizard made to do something

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 06:30 AM PST

We take a look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Playdoh car
Imagine you’ve got a new car to tell people about. It’s a family car, with the emphasis on kids and space and fun and whatnot. Then someone gives you a tonne of money and a shipping crate full of playdoh with which to get said message across. What would you do? Probably this.

Lizard delivers games
Since we’re on the theme of weird marketing stunts, why not have a look at this, in which the musings of some deranged execs directly lead to a huge lizard being strapped to a wooden cart full of Xbox games. If that doesn’t make you want to buy Dragon Age II, we don’t know what will.

Awesome keyboard slippers are awesome
Geek accessories a go-go. While we wouldn’t advise against any prospective life partners catching you wearing these, there is something to be said for reaching that absolute pinnacle of geekdom – the apex of your nerdy leanings. Go forth, Sir (or Madam), and protect your feet in PC apparel like the social outcast that you are.

Pen envy
Look at you, with your rubbish pen. It’s rubbish. Our pen does all the normal pen type stuff (writing, eye-gauging, etc.), but is also a fork, a knife, a USB stick, a watch, a light, a screwdriver, a pipe, a toothbrush, a shaving blade, a nail clipper and a 13th century stone-built castle. Well it’s not the last thing, but it is all the others. Honest.

3D Swimsuits
The unrelenting march of using 3D for smutty purposes continues unabated. This time it’s Sports Illustrated, the US national institution that once-yearly releases a swimsuit edition consisting largely of female sports stars in bikinis. Make it 3D and you will make it better, said the gods of all things slightly pervy.

Call of Duty helps wartime trauma
You’d have thought that Call of Duty’s non-stop, retina burning sensory overload would be among the worst things to show a battle-hardened ex-soldier. Research says otherwise, though, claiming that a bit of CoD before bed will help Private X drift off to a peaceful sleep, forgetting all about that time when he had to try and find his mate Joey’s legs.

We Dare pulled from UK
The ‘sexy’ Wii game aimed at adults who need a games console to tell them when to take their clothes off has been axed. We know, we know… we’re all a bit sad. Turns out that the prospect of bizarre gaming-related swingers’ parties (as advertised) was just too much for our polite British sensibilities.

Sheen seeking young (tiger)blood
As if struck by a rare moment of clear thought, international madman hero Charlie Sheen has realised that his tweets need sorting out and is on the hunt for a social networking intern. You’ve got 75 characters to explain why you deserve the job, which will last 8 weeks and presumably knock a good decade off your life.

And finally…

Apple’s getting lazy
Ok, so technically this is from last week, but since the iPad 2 launches in the States today, we thought we’d share Conan’s flash of genius Re: the hyperbole-heavy announcement video:

Sony launches My Daily Clip app for iPhone

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 06:00 AM PST

Can a clip from a classic tempt you into an iTunes download?

Sony has launched an app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which brings movie fans a free clip from the company's vast movie library every day.

My Daily Clip, which is available to download from the App Store now, will deliver a new clip to your device each day and, naturally, provide links to download the whole movie from iTunes.

Each clip is accompanied by a little trivia, while also giving the option to share it with friends via Facebook and Twitter. Clips from previous days can be easily searched for and found using the on-screen calendar.

The free application is a fab idea from Sony to expose more people to its online library and push movie downloads direct to a device. It's also a win-win for us downloaders, because even if we don't to download the movie, who's going to complain about a free, high quality clip from a classic movie arriving on our handset every day.

Be warned though, the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez calamity known as Gigli is hidden in the line up, which may see the need for you to drown your iPhone in a cocktail of bleach spiked with cyanide. Just to be on the safe side.

Project iPad magazine coming to Android for free?

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 04:39 AM PST

The Daily rival heading to an Android phone near you

Sir Richard Branson has exclusively revealed to T3 his plans for Project iPad magazine to be available on Android for free.

The billionaire entrepeneur who launched the digital magazine on the Apple App Store in November last year, told T3, "I think Project will have to be on Android to get the market."

Branson added, "All of us on iPad, I doubt we're making any money and so you need Android to get a bigger market. I suspect we'll see Project on both Android and iPad."

Expected to go head-to-head with Rupert Murdoch's The Daily iPad newspaper app, content for Branson's mag content ranges from business, culture, design, entertainment, travel and lifestyle.

Priced at £1.79  an issue, including "updating content", downloading a free reader app is also required to get the full Project experience.

Have you bought Project for the iPad? Do you think it is value for money? Let us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

iPhone 5 pictures: Bigger screen revealed?

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 03:16 AM PST

Leaked technical drawings suggest a larger display and a thinner bezel.

Worshippers at the font of Apple rumours were blessed today with another reported glimpse of the upcoming iPhone 5, thanks to Chinese tech site idealschina.com.

The images are what the site call "mold engineering drawings", used by designers as guides to create a gadget's outer casing. As the post on the site explained: "We just got what appears to be mold engineering drawings for iPhone 5. These would be used by case designers to create plastic, TPU, aluminum, silicone and leather cases."

Click here to launch the gallery of iPhone 5 pictures

The images suggest that the iPhone 5 won't differ hugely in form factor from its predecessor, the iPhone 4. In fact, the only obvious difference is that the screen now extends right to the side-edges of the device, no longer constrained by a bezel as found on the current gen iPhone. These are just pictures of the outer shell, mind. We've got a whole article on the whispered changes Apple is making under the hood.

We've already touched on the idea of the next iPhone boasting a larger screen to cash in on the trend for bigger displays we saw at MWC (think Galaxy S2, LG Optimus 3D, Acer Iconia et al.), and the problems that might cause for Apple's leviathan collection of 3.7-inch optimised apps, but this rumour is one that's gathering some momentum. Real deal or fanboy trickery? Let us know via the T3 inbox or the T3 Twitter feed.

Seized PS3s released, LG fined

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 03:12 AM PST

Blu-ray patent dispute continues but Sony now free to ship PlayStation 3.

The PS3s impounded in Europe last week following an injunction won by LG have been freed, as the legal dispute between the two tech titans took another twist. A Dutch court last week ordered the seizure of all PS3 shipments in Europe as part of a Blu-ray infringement case.

Now though, Sony is free to move the 300,000 PS3s, with plans to bring in more shipments in the coming weeks. To compound LG’s misery, it’s been fined €130,000 and told it must pay €200,000 for every day it refuses to hand over the money.

The tussle relates to LG claims over Blu-ray tech used in the PS3. When the consoles were seized, Sony feared that stocks of its best-selling console would dry up within a couple of weeks.

The legal wrangling is set to continue, so our advice? Buy a PS3 now if you’re after one, as this is one will run and run.

PSP 2: Sony NGP coming to Europe November 11th?

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 02:33 AM PST

Sony gear up for pre-Christmas Next Generation Portable launch in Europe.

Gaming fans with long car journeys to wile away may not have (too much) longer to wait for the next generation PSP, the NGP (Next Generation Portable), with rumours surfacing today that Sony's answer to the Nintendo 3DS may hit European shores on November 11th.

The rumoured pre-holidays release date comes courtesy of sources over at MCV, who report that Sony is planning to release the NGP simultaneously in all markets, despite previous speculation that only Japan would be seeing the device in time for Christmas.

With a spacious 5-inch OLED touchscreen, touch-sensitive controls on the back and a processor Sony is claiming is the most advanced available, the NGP is looking like a strong competitor to Nintendo's glasses-free 3D handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, which will be released on March 25th.

iPad tablet share slips to 73 per cent

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 02:05 AM PST

Galaxy Tab provides greatest competition

The iPad’s share of the tablet space slipped to 73 per cent in the last quarter of 2010. That’s according to International Data Corporation (IDC), which says in a new report that tablet sales more than doubled to 10.1 million in the fourth quarter from 4.5 million in the third.

While the iPad cornered 93 per cent of the market in the third quarter of last year, the arrival of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab in October meant it faced stiffer competition in the run up to Christmas. Sammy’s slate took 17 per cent of the market in the last three months of 2010.

IDC has said though that demand for the Galaxy Tab has been “stifled” by the iPad, with the research types reckoning the arrival of the iPad 2 will help Apple maintain around 70 per cent share, even with the launch of a slew of new Android Honeycomb rivals.

Apple and Canon plotting tie-up?

Posted: 11 Mar 2011 01:12 AM PST

Rumours of hook-up between two tech titans abound.

Apple and Canon are said to be prepping a tie-up, which could see the two work on new products. Details remain scarce, but a hook-up between the two could be mean some seriously smart new tech.

The gossip comes from Canon Rumors, where the site’s Alex Johnson says, “I’ve received a few pieces of information about an upcoming collaboration between Apple and Canon. What that collaboration is hasn’t been spelled out to me. It could be with the upcoming Final Cut Pro 8, or maybe something more.”

Final Cut Pro would be a good fit for Canon’s top end camcorders and HD-loaded DSLRs. How this would work in practice though is unclear.

White iPhone 4 release next month?

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 11:54 PM PST

Are we really about to see the white iPhone 4 in the wild?

Salt shakers at the ready. An Apple watching analyst claims that the white iPhone 4 will take a bow in April, with Apple ramping up production this month following almost a year of delays.

Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities reckons Apple has fixed the problems it had with the white paint used to coat the blower. The imminent release of the white iPad 2 also means the white iPhone 4 could finally be about to make its debut.

The white iPhone 4 was initially pegged for release in June 2010, only to be pushed back until August and then into 2011. Just last month, gossip ramped up after the lightly-hued model showed up in gadget store inventories.

Is is too late for the white iPhone 4? Will you buy one with the iPhone 5 just a few months away? let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony readying 3G-packing compact camera

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 11:33 PM PST

Insider Cyber-shot plans revealed, as Sony looks to tackle smartphone snappers.

Sony is rumoured to be working on a new Cyber-shot compact camera that packs in a 3G data connection. Word is the snapper will allow a certain amount of free 3G to upload a set number of snaps, while more frequent users would be charged.

The news comes from a source close to Sony, speaking to the chaps at gdgt. The camera will most likely come with built-in access to the likes of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr, so you can shovel your shots directly onto your website of choice.

Of course, phones with cameras offer a similar deal, even if digital zooms mean they still can’t match up to their optical zoom-packing compact cousins. There’s no word on when this Sony 3G Cyber-shot will land, but the idea is certainly intriguing.

What do you make of Sony’s plans? Would you buy and use a compact with 3G smarts? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
