News@8pm: Dell rants at Apple and Kansas gets 1Gbps

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Amazon's Cloud Drive inspired some healthy competition today as mSpot announced an upgrade to its free services. mSpot's new 5GB storage capacity for free matches Amazon's gratis offering. Amazon has created uproar in the music industry by announcing its Cloud Player before getting the approval of the major record labels. It emerged today that Amazon is now trying to hurriedly arrange licensing deals after the fact although Sony in particular is not happy about the situation.

Vodafone announces delays for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play less than 24 hours before its official release. The network operator told customers today that Sony Ericsson are unable to supply the Xperia Play to Vodafone for tomorrow and customers will simply have to wait. The launch continues to get more embarrassing for Sony Ericsson after O2 announced delays just days ago. Whilst you may not be able to access the Playstation Suite just yet with all of its gaming goodness, Angry Birds Rio has now landed on the Android Market so you can while away the days in bird-launching bliss until your Xperia Play arrives.

Kansas city won the Google broadband lottery and will soon be enjoying blistering download speeds. Kansas' new Googlified broadband will hit 1Gbps, roughly 100 times the average US household. The lucky Yanks will be able to download a full HD movie in less than 2 minutes. In completely unrelated news, we've decided here at T3 that its time for a bit of an office relocation. Lets say... oh I don't know, Kansas? Whilst Kansas was getting boosted x100, Google gave the rest of the world "+1". The new search feature is similar to Facebook's like button and will show you which search results or web pages your friends have "+1'd" to help you make informed browsing decisions.

Dell lashed out at Apple this week as its Global Head of Marketing, Andy Lark ranted about the iPad's flaws. Pointing out the benefits of openness over closed ecosystems he then went on to have a dig at Apple's customers saying "Apple is great if you’ve got a lot of money and live on an island." You might want to be careful what you're implying there Andy, those are the customers I'm sure you'd love to nab. Dell did have some positive news today though as their Venue Pro became the latest phone to receive the NoDo WP7 update. The update adds copy and paste along with other enhancements but Dell has already announced that they will be following with another update soon to iron out any bugs.

HTC Pyramid to land April 12th following official event?

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:18 AM PDT

April 12th HTC event confirmed by invite

HTC has sparked speculation around the upcoming release of the repeatedly leaked HTC Pyramid having issued the formal invitations for an upcoming product announcement.

Intriguingly proclaiming “Join us to see what’s next,” the HTC invite gives little away about future devices offering a strangely warped image of what appears to be either a frozen splash of liquid metal or water. The press event is set to take place in London on April 12th.

Rumours have been rife of the imminent arrival of the HTC Pyramid of late with the mooted 1.2GHz dual-core processor touting device readying itself to take on the upcoming fleet of dual-core smartphones that includes the LG Optimus 2X and Samsung’s Galaxy S II.

Adding to the handset’s dual-core engine the Pyramid is claimed to sport 768MB of RAM, a 4.3-inch qHD display with a 960 x 540p resolution and an 8-megapixel rear-mounted snapper joined by a front-facing camera.

Whilst the Pyramid is hotly tipped as the likely candidate for the upcoming unveiling, launch dates for the recently announced HTC Flyer tablet and UK information for the US bound HTC Evo 3D are also strong possibilities.

Pyramid, Flyer, Evo 3D or new mystery device? Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds to find out what is officially unveiled at the April 12th event.

Nintendo refute 3DS health issues saying no user reports

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:24 AM PDT

Glasses-free 3D console not a health concern claim Nintendo

Nintendo has hit back at claims that the recently released 3DS console has been causing users to face spouts of dizziness and headaches stating is has yet to receive a single call from European gamers facing such issues.

Refuting claims made earlier this week that hundreds of gamers using Nintendo’s glasses-free portable games console had complained of dizziness and vomiting, the Japanese gaming giant has issued an official release with a spokesperson for the company stating: "We've had zero calls on this issue in both the UK and across Europe since Nintendo 3DS launch."

The claims which emerged after Twitter, tech websites and blogs were hit by reports from early 3DS adopters of headaches, eye strain, dizziness and vomiting, spiralled quickly forcing the Nintendo release to state: "It seems to have arisen from a few tweets and comments following the US launch this week.”

Keen to quash any ill press regarding health implications of the 3DS following concerns by medical experts prior to the console’s launch Nintendo has expressed the need to follow its strict health guidelines issued with the device. The company said: “If anyone in the UK is experiencing discomfort whilst playing Nintendo 3DS we recommend in the first instance they follow our advice.

"Each person is different and therefore we advise consumers that when using their Nintendo 3DS, they need to find the distance and angle that is most comfortable for them, and use the built-in depth slider to select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be scaled back or even turned off completely.

"Also, regardless of age, we recommend that consumers take a break every 30 minutes when playing in 3D mode. Finally, parents and caregivers are advised that children six and under should not use the 3D mode, and they can easily restrict the display of 3D mode by using the Parental Controls feature."

Have you sampled the Nintendo 3DS already, did you find the console made you dizzy? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

UK radio finds a digital home on new Radioplayer site

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:55 AM PDT

UK radio collected together under one digital roof by new Radioplayer service

Radioplayer is a new website aiming to do for radio what Freeview did for TV, bringing 157 digital radio broadcasts together under one powerful tool.

The Radioplayer has some influential partners at launch including Radiocentre, the industry body and the BBC which has made all of its stations available through the service.

The Radioplayer allows users to search by station, presenter, show or genre and has a 'Favourites' feature that gives the user quick access to eight pre-selected stations.

Managing Director, Michael Hill is confident that the platform can be successful thanks to its openness and the quality and quantity of content partners which is expected to quickly reach 300 commercial stations.

The Radioplayer can be customised by broadcasters to offer additional on-demand content, previous shows and advertising to generate extra revenue.

With Radio due to undertake the digital switchover in 2015, Radioplayer hopes to provide a standard internet platform for UK radio. For radio fans this might relieve the pain of losing Pandora to international licensing constraints back in 2007.

Will this affect the way you use the internet to access radio content? Tell us what you think of the new service on T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Angry Birds Rio arrives on Android Market

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 05:52 AM PDT

Its name is Rio and it's on the Android Market.

Android toting Brits can finally get their hands on Angry Birds Rio after a free, ad-funded version of the game arrived on the Android Market.

British bird chuckers had been left in the dark as the yet-to-be-launched-in-the-UK Amazon Appstore winning an exclusive release of the latest iteration of Rovio's hit franchise.

For the past week or so iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners have been lording it up around the nation with this movie tie-in game, but now Android owners can finally get their fix on the Android Market.

Rovio aren't charging a fee for this game, so you will be lumbered with those cumbersome advertisements blocking your view of those high-riding chortling pigs, but it's a small price to pay to finally get the title many are calling the best Angry Birds yet.

There's still no news on when the Amazon Appstore will launch in the UK so we're likely to face a similar wait or blackout everytime the e-retailer nabs an app exclusive.

Dell head launches scathing attack on Apple and the iPad

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:48 AM PDT

Rivals target Apple and iPad

Dell and Microsoft have hit out at Apple with heads from both companies launching scathing attacks on the market leading iPad tablet.

Widely responsible for reinvigorating the consumer tablet market and sparking a trend that has seen nearly all major tech manufacturers join the bandwagon, Apple’s iPad has faced fierce criticism from competitors who have yet failed to match the Apple device.

Speaking at the CIO conference in Sydney, Dell’s Global Head of Marketing for Large Enterprises and Public Organisations, Andy Lark, let fly at the fruity tech company and it’s iPad device declaring: “I couldn’t be happier that Apple has created a market and built up enthusiasm but longer term, open, capable and affordable will win, not closed, high price and proprietary.”

He added: “[Apple has] done a really nice job, they’ve got a great product, but the challenge they’ve got is that already Android is outpacing them.” Concluding with a sharp tongue: “Apple is great if you’ve got a lot of money and live on an island. It’s not so great if you have to exist in a diverse, open, connected enterprise; simple things become quite complex.”

Joining the Apple attack mix, Microsoft’s Global Chief Research and Strategy Office, Craig Mundie reportedly said he did not know if tablets such as the iPad will “remain with us or not.”

Will the iPad and new iPad 2 remain the dominant force in the tablet market or will the emerging Android machines take charge? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Plus1: Facebook Like alternative launches

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:48 AM PDT

Yet another way to show your love for web content

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably concerned that there just aren’t enough ways to show appreciation for web content. Good news, then: Google has launched a competitor to Facebook’s ‘Like’ button, by the name of ‘+1’.

+1 will mainly benefit search results, in a system Google is comparing to receiving recommendations from friends and family. Essentially, the idea is that you and your contacts all begin clicking the +1 button (that’ll soon adorn most web pages) when you like whatever content you’re reading. Assuming it takes off, everyone’s Google search results will then be annotated with +1s by their friends, letting you know that they recommend the content.

You’ll need a Google public profile to sign up and start using the +1 system. Still a bit perplexed? Check out the video below for Google’s no-nonsense explanation. Let us know your thoughts on the +1 system via the T3 Twitter feed

mSpot hits back in fight with Amazon Cloud Player

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:03 AM PDT

Amazon's new service brings mSpot out swinging.

With Amazon’s Cloud Drive and Cloud Player digital locker services grabbing the headlines this week, smaller rivals have been struggling to prove why they’re worth going with over the online retail giant.

mSpot is the first to try and go toe-to-toe with Amazon, revealing that it’s upped its free storage offering to 5GB, matching the amount you get with Cloud Drive. Previously, punters had only got 2GB for nowt.

mSpot is yet to launch here in the UK, although it has said it plans to bring its service to these shores in 2011. If Amazon does the same, you can bet it’ll have a struggle on its hands to compete.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play release delayed by Vodafone

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:01 AM PDT

Move follows O2's plans to push back release of PlayStation phone.

Sony Ericsson’s much-anticipated Xperia Play, aka the PlayStation Phone, is officially due to hit shelves tomorrow. But less than 24 hours before release, Vodafone has become the latest network to delay its release.

A message sent to a customer by the network said, “Sony Ericsson have advised us that they will not be able to supply the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to meet the original launch date of 1 April."

In a further statement, Vodafone added, “We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure your phone is delivered as soon as possible and we will be in touch again with specific timescales when we know more. We appreciate this is disappointing and are doing our very best to resolve this as quickly as possible."

Vodafone’s move will be extremely embarrassing for Sony Ericsson, especially after O2 said it was also delaying the Xperia Play’s release due to “bugs and issues”. Sony Ericsson is yet to comment. The mobile maker is holding a huge launch party for the phone tonight in central London.

Have you been affected by Vodafone’s move? Have these delays put you off getting an Xperia Play? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Google 1GBps web hits Kansas City

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 01:14 AM PDT

Move comes after hundreds of cities across US applied for 1GBps web.

Kansas City will become the first US city to feel Google’s 1GBps love, after seeing off competition from over 1,100 other towns and cities in the States.

Google announced plans to build a number of 1GBps connections in the States last year and said it would pick one city to kick things off. It’s chosen Kansas as its first port of call, with the city getting a web connection 100 times faster than the US average. It’ll be installed by the start of 2012.

What’s more, Google says this is just the start of its plans for ultra fast broadband and that it’ll be looking to build more 1GBps networks throughout the US. But what we really want to know is when the UK will be getting some similar action.

Let us know what you think of Google’s move over on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Dell Venue Pro get Windows Phone 7 NoDo update

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:52 PM PDT

Update will be followed by patch to fix bugs says Dell.

Dell’s Venue Pro Windows Phone 7 handset is the latest to get Microsoft’s much-anticipated “NoDo” update, which brings copy and paste smarts to the Big M’s slick mobile operating system.

The news comes straight from Dell, which has announced on Twitter that rollout has already begun. Word is it will be followed by another update, this time a Dell-made one that aims to fix any bugs with the device.

Microsoft recently released a “NoDo” update schedule to keep punter informed of just when its string of phones would be getting the software boost. It was initially planned for a February release, but was delayed after a preliminary update bricked a number of Samsung WP7 handsets.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus leaked

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 11:36 PM PDT

Russian site leaks details of new Samsung handset ahead of launch.

Samsung is preparing to launch yet another phone as part of its Galaxy line-up. Dubbed the Galaxy S Plus i9001, it’s just been leaked on a Samsung official blog over in Russia, and certainly sounds like an Android phone we can get on board with.

Under the hood there’s a lightning fast 1.4GHz processor, with 8GB of storage and a capacious 4-inch super-AMOLED display slapped on the front. That’ll handle Samsung’s Touchwiz 4.0 UI, which sits on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Word is that the Galaxy S Plus will hit Russian shelves next month, costing about £521 SIM-free. There’s no news on how much it’ll set you back on these shores, but we’ll bring you any news as soon as we get it.
