News@8pm: Samsung hits 100 million, iPad 2 for £199

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Motorola poked fun at the iPad 2 hopefuls today, trying to tempt them away from the queues and towards the Xoom with taunts about "wasting the finest weather we've had in ages". Those looking to get an iPad 2 tomorrow might want to check out Orange's offering of a 16GB WI-FI +3G device for only £199 on a two year contract. Plus they'll be giving 10 away for free tomorrow for those dressed as their favourite apps. We call Angry Birds! Who wants the T3 app?

Samsung smashed through 100 million app downloads for its Bada platform and Smart TVs which both connect to the Samsung Apps mobile store. To celebrate Sammy's handing out weekly prizes to anyone who downloads an app over the next month. One of the prizes on offer is a Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is now selling for £300 at Asda. The price cut, down from £437 comes just in time to undercut the iPad 2's launch tomorrow. Coincidence?

New Atrix owners have suffered the early adoption blues with users reporting that the Atrix's call quality leaves a bit to be desired. Moto's already on the case and is looking into the situation. Others who are feeling the pain of taking an early plunge are US iPad 2 owners. Reports are streaming in from customers who are finding their Facetime app infuriating when it freezes mid call, rendered useless until the iPad is restarted. Lets hope Apple gets it sorted before we Brits have to suffer. You've got less than a day, Cupertino.

Vodafone unveil UK's lowest pricing for the Apple iPad 2

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 10:18 AM PDT

Vodafone trump Orange's iPad 2 pricings

Hot on the heels of Orange, Vodafone has announced its iPad 2 prices for the UK undercutting its competitor on the £199 pricing of the second-gen tablet.

Much like Orange, Vodafone has declared it will offer the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G version of the iPad 2 for just £199 as part of a two year contract. Unlike the Everything Everywhere network, however, Vodafone has overlooked the £25 per month pricing instead opting for a new national low of, wait for it, £24.50 per month.

For this monthly expense Vodafone’s iPad 2 customers will be treated to a 2GB of data monthly allowance and a 1GB data allowance over the BT Openzone Wi-Fi network. Those exceeding their monthly quota will be charged £15 for addition 1GB of data used by the red-hued network.

Apple announced earlier this week that the iPad 2 would be made available from 5pm on Friday, March 25th, with all third party retailers such as Vodafone and Orange to hold stocks until that hour.

Are you one of the many who will be snapping up and Apple iPad 2 on launch day tomorrow? If so let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola launch attack on Apple and the iPad 2 launch

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 09:11 AM PDT

Xoom vs. Ipad 2, the battle takes a light-hearted twist

Motorola has made a timely attack on the launch of the iPad 2 stating consumers looking to snap up the latest great tablet release forgo the Apple queues and "head out for a pint and pre-order the Motorola Xoom online instead.”

With much of the gadget world, and national press, looking to Apple and tomorrow’s global rollout of the second-generation iPad tablet, Motorola has offered some light-hearted advice to those looking to spend the night queuing for the in-demand device.

With the recent spate of sun tempting Motorola in to action the Xoom manufacturer announced: “Not keen to waste the finest weather we've had in ages waiting in a queue? Idea of surviving overnight on mundane take-away with some frankly questionable queue buddies leave you cold? Fear not friends, ditch the winter coat, head out for a pint and pre-order your Motorola Xoom online instead!"

Apple officially announced earlier this week that the iPad 2 will be available to purchase from 5pm on Friday, March 25th leaving those already queuing for the device, such as the first in the queue at Apple’s flagship London Regent Street store, Jewels Lewis, with an agonising day of trading to endure before finally getting their hands on the iPad 2.

Which is the tablet for you Apple’s iPad 2 or Motorola’s Xoom? Let us know which and why via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Apps reaches 100 million download milestone

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:41 AM PDT

10 months in and Samsung Apps has made it to 100 million downloads

Less than a year after Samsung unveiled its Apps Marketplace to the world, it is reporting that it has hit the 100 million download milestone. Having taken three months to reach 10 million downloads, the store's popularity has grown rapidly to reach this figure.

Originally Samsung Apps was introduced in June of last year alongside the Samsung Wave, the first phone to come running Bada, Samsung's proprietary OS.  Since then Samsung has extended its Wave line-up to six devices all sporting Bada.

The application marketplace is also available on Sammy's internet-capable televisions, although in January the Smart TV apps had only accounted for 2 million of the total downloads.

With a catalogue of over 13,000 apps available in 120 countries, Samsung is expecting further growth over the next year as they roll out more Bada handsets and TVs that will be able to access the store.

To celebrate their achievement, Samsung will be giving away weekly prizes for the next month.  Anyone who downloads a Samsung App in this time will be in the running to win some Samsung prizes including Samsung Apps vouchers, a Galaxy Player and a Galaxy Tab.

Color, new photo-based social networking app launched

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 07:28 AM PDT

New free app augments your memories with pictures from an elastic network of friends.

A new photo-based social application has been launched for iPhone and Android which allows users to make connections with those in the same area.

The Color app, which is available for iPhone now and will hit the Android Market later today, uses GPS to produce a photostream from people who are posting pictures and videos to the app in the same geographic area.

The app, which creates a visual diary of an event using the multi-lens view, shows the posts that other people have made from the same area. Those photos will remain on the app for the user to keep.

Color will also give users the opportunity to make personal contact with members of their "elastic network," so you can reach out to someone doing the same thing in the same place and see if they'd like to meet. You'll get a notification any time someone respond to one of your posts.

Color Demo from Color Labs, Inc. on Vimeo.

The bulletin section will bring new updates from people who are posting from a nearby area or from those who are in the elastic network, while the thread view shows who is contributing to an event with the user.

The app has huge potential to change the way we interact socially with our smartphones, and Silicon Valley feels the same way with Color raising $41 in investments.

Asda to sell Samsung Galaxy at cut price

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 03:34 AM PDT

While Samsung have been confusing everybody with their multiple tablet releases over the coming months, Asda are cutting the price of the original Galaxy by a third.

The seven-inch tablet – not the 8.9 or 10.1 – which comes with Android 2.2 Froyo is now selling for £300, down from £437 which ASDA originally charged. That marks a massive drop in price since it launched with an eye-watering £799 price tag hanging around its neck.

With the new iPad 2 due for release at 5pm tomorrow – we’ll be reporting live from the queue on Regent Street – with a price tag of just £399 for the basic 16GB WiFi only model, will Samsung start dropping prices on the rest of its range, too?

Motorola Atrix 4G: Voice call quality poor, says users

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 03:31 AM PDT

Motorola is looking into a fix

Early adopters often have a torrid time of things. They either see their new tech superseded too quickly or have to face the brunt of untested technical issues. US customers who’ve jumped aboard the good ship Atrix are feeling the pain of the latter, and Moto’s been forced to intervene.

It turns out that the call quality on a number of Motorola Atrix 4G handsets is a bit on the shonky side. So many in fact, that Motorola’s realised it must be a real issue and has addressed it in owners’ forum.

The sticky thread says: “We've been looking into it for some time however we've only recently gotten phones back from customers. The users we asked to volunteer their phone were either unwilling or had already returned it. No indication currently as to the cause.” It then prompts users to give some idea as to what the problem is via a set of questions.

Alma Wade and her offspring are coming...

Yahoo! upgrades to instant search with Search Direct

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:50 AM PDT

First browser wars...now search engine wars.

Yahoo has come out with a new search engine, Yahoo Search Direct.

Yahoo Search Direct is based on a similar concept to Google Instant, whereby the search box produces results while users type in the phrase they want to search for, and each letter typed brings out better results. In short, you get results even before typing out the entire phrase or word.

Currently in beta, Search Direct is rolling out to the public in the US (search.yahoo.com) and will be available in other markets soon.

The features of the new search engine include top search trends, search previews (which gives you the 10 most likeliest searches), direct answers (instant answers for common searches such as weather forecasts) and direct results.

It's this feature that Yahoo is pushing as distinguishing it from others, as direct results allows users to instantly go to the website they want without looking at a list of links. "With today’s launch, direct answers – not the search results page – is the primary focus. We are redefining the search process and prominently displaying direct answers where search decisions are being made," said Shashi Seth, senior vice president, Yahoo! Search and Marketplaces.

Mozilla Firefox 4 passes 13 million downloads in 2 days

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:22 AM PDT

The fox is on the run

Mozilla has launched its new Firefox browser on March 22 and in two days has notched up over 13 million downloads worldwide.

The new and improved Firefox includes HTML5 support, has improved page load times, and a six-times speed increase. The browser is a project of Mozilla, which is open-source and can be downloaded for free, and was more popular than IE in Europe.

Looking at the real-time map on Mozilla's website, you'll notice that there are a high number of downloads pinging from Europe and North America. In Europe, Germany has the highest number of Firefox downloads at this time (near 1 million), with UK in fourth spot behind Russia and France.

Firefox 4 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac and Linux, and as Mozilla states on their website, by downloading it you get a "new look", "super speed" and "even more awesomeness", which Mozilla had announced last year.

What are your thoughts on the new Mozilla Firefox browser? Let us know at T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and stay tuned in for your latest tech updates.
