After a five-hour wait, the excitement was palpable and we grabbed our trusty DSLR camera and cracked open the box that won't be arriving on UK soil until March 25th.

So check out our unboxing gallery, also featuring the new Apple Smart Cover (we opted for the lime green plastic cover) and the new HDMI adapter, which will allow iDevice users to hook up to their HD TV.

Xperia Play release date set for 31st March in UK

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 03:15 AM PST

UK Xperia Play launch set for end of March with massive marketing campaign.

At long last, the phone we've been clamouring for since way back in 2006 is finally making its debut, and would-be Xperia Play (or PlayStation Phone, as many are still calling it) owners have only until the end of the month to pick one up.

Sony Ericsson claim that when the device launches on March 31st it will be backed by the company's biggest ever marketing campaign in the UK and available from all retailers on all networks - quite a claim. Speaking to MCV, Sony Ericsson's marketing director for the UK and Ireland hinted that the handset might also be available from video game shops, saying: "we are currently still in commercial conversation, but I'd be surprised if we didn't see the Xperia Play appear in other channels".

Sony Ericsson announced at MWC that the Android 2.3-running, 5-inch-screened, 60-frames-per-second Xperia Play would launch alongside fifty games, including big name titles like Assassin's Creed, Dead Space and Guitar Hero. Six games will also come pre-installed on the device, including The Sims 3, Fifa 10 and Crash Bandicoot.

We had a chance to play with the Xperia Play after it was unveiled in Barcelona. Check out our exclusive hands-on video below to find out what we thought.

App week: Android Navigation rerouting, We7 Radio Plus

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

We7 offers online radio without being online
Yes, you read correctly. The new We7 Radio Plus app allows you to charge up smartphone with music from the tailored station of your choosing, using your home or office Wi-Fi connection. This means that even underground there'll be no buffering or loading even when there's no 3G signal available. Great news for those on limited data plans.

Sorry TomTom, but Google Maps Navigation is getting even better
The traditional satnav will be crying into its cornflakes this weekend because Google has added live traffic rerouting to its completely free Android Navigation app. Google will use current and historical traffic info to automatically take you on the quickest route. Is there any reason left to buy a satnav?

Surf Facebook or play Angry Birds? Dilemma over.
We must admit that 97.265 per cent of our downtime (and a good deal of our up-time) is spent either browsing Facebook or playing Angry Birds on our smartphones. Well tech these days is all about convergence, so say hello to Angry Birds on Facebook. The maladjusted winged menaces will be landing on the social networking platform in May. And, quelle surprise, Angry Birds Seasons: St Patrick's Day is also on the way

GarageBand and new iMovie apps land early
After chucking out iOS 4.3 early, Apple also unleashed the iPad iterations of GarageBand and iMovie for an extremely reasonable £2.99 a pop. iPad one owners can get GB now, but you'll need an iPad 2, iPhone or iPod touch for the new iMovie app, as it requires a video camera.

Can a free movie clip tempt you into an iTunes download?
Sony certainly hopes so. The company has launched the My Daily Clip app which delivers a nicely edited movie scene to your phone every day and allows you to share it with friends. Then, after you've indulged in a little trivia you can download it directly via iTunes.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Hack and slash in this five-star thriller
The games line-up on Android is finally worth talking about and never more than with the graphically-majestic Samurai II: Vengeance TDH. Sadly at the moment, it's only available to Android phones powered with a Tegra chip, so it'll only work on the Morola Xoom, Atrix or the LG Optimus 2X. A sign of things to come...

QI comes to iPhone
The Stephen Fry-hosted quiz show makes an appearance in smartphone land with this tidy little official app. Boasting more amazing facts than a two-headed John Motson, QI iPhone brings a host of Quite Interesting trivia for the quite reasonable price of £2.39. No Fry to be seen here though. Denied.

We've got a new leader...
at the top of the Windows Phone 7 chart this weekend with the arrival of the best movie database in the world, IMDb. This five star WP7 outing brings all of your favourite features from the site in a beautifully designed interface. Alongside the limitless database, there's also showtimes, trailers and trivia. Lovely.

iPad 2 Smart Cover also instant-on switch

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 02:12 AM PST

Apple's Smart Cover does more than just protect and prop up the iPad 2.

The polyurethane or leather covers for the Apple iPad 2 also double up as a kind of instant-on switch for the device, according to the New York Times. Lifting one side of the cover open, like a book jacket, instantly wakes the device from sleep, doing away with having to press a button and then drag your finger along the unlock bar. "It's such an elegant solution" former Gingko Design president Scott Yu told the NYT.

The Smart Covers were announced by Steve Jobs alongside the official iPad 2 unveiling on March 2nd. Using magnets, they attach to the new iPad and when closed protect the glass from scratches, but can be opened and folded in on themselves to create a stand for hands-free iPad viewing or easier typing.

Although UK Apple fans still have a couple of weeks to wait before their trip to the Apple Store, the iPad 2 went on sale in the US today with record-breaking, round-the-block queues and several Apple Stores running out of stock. You can see what we made of Apple's new über-tablet in our hands on review, below.

Tech Week: iPhone 5 pics and T3 talks to Richard Branson

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 01:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week

Monday

Fresh off the back of Apple officially unveiling the iPad 2 and cutting the price of the original iPad in the process, Carphone Warehouse followed suit by offering a cut-price first gen Apple tablet in anticipation of Apple tablet number two. Getting Windows Phone 7 fans a little excited, a Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset was spied only later to be revealed as a ditched prototype. Anyone for a Wii 2? Many would argue that Ninty's flagship console is in need of a refresh and if latest rumours are to be believed, a Wii 2 could be unveiled in June this year.

Tuesday

More console talk as new job listings suggested that plans for a new Xbox console is already in the process. Turning our attention to Apple and more iPhone 5 rumours emerged with a video showing a supposed Apple smartphone packing 64GB of storage. The goal-line debate could well be solved by Sony after the company acquired Hawk-Eye Ltd, the British based company behind the successful live sports ball tracking tool commonly used in cricket and tennis. T3 spoke to Sony to find out if goal-line technology was on the agenda. It was good news for Spotify as the streaming music marvel announced that it has finally hit one million paid subscribers.

Wednesday

After suprising everyone by taking to the stage last week to show off the iPad 2, Apple founder Steve Wozniak spoke out on Steve Jobs's illness that many expected would stop him from attending. In more tablet-related news, Samsung teased a Galaxy Tab 8.9-inch device which is expected to be unveiled on March 22nd. To wrap up matters of Wednesday's tech news the unavoidable Charlie Sheen announced that he was after a tigerblood-loving Twitter intern. Any takers?

Thursday

iOS 4.3 officially landed just in time for the US launch of the iPad 2, but most importantly perhaps was the strong evidence that the iPhone 5 will feature a dual core processor.  Did you buy a Kinect? Well it seems whole lot of you did after it was revealed that Kinect is the fastest-selling consumer electronics device ever.

Wouldn't it just be great to have a chin wag with a man who owns his own island, F1 team and once had his own brand of Cola? wWell T3's Rhi Morgan did just that, sitting down with Sir Richard Branson about his dream to merge Virgin with Apple and news on supersonic flights.

Friday

It's good news for Stateside Apple fanbois as the iPad 2 launches in US Apple Stores the same day as more alleged new images of the iPhone 5 surface. The Sony versus LG saga continues to run as seized PS3 are released as LG are fined over the matter. UK gaming fans looking forward to getting their hands on the Sony NGP (PSP2) could be the first to play with the portable console after a November 11th release date was mooted by third party suppliers. Rounding of the week's news, we have more from Sir Richard Branson who tells us that his Project iPad magazine could be coming to Android for free.

Apple iPad 2 launch: Record-breaking queues

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 12:59 AM PST

Thousands stake out Apple Stores for iPad 2 launch.

Despite pouring rain in parts of the States yesterday evening, the queues of Apple fans itching to get their hands on Apple's iPad 2 stretched literally around the block, with Apple Stores and neighbouring shops in New York and San Francisco being completely enveloped by would-be iPad 2 owners. According to Apple staffers and shoppers, the queues are the longest of any Apple product launch in history.

Click here to launch our gallery of iPad 2 hands-on pictures.

With the news that pre-orders of the iPad 2 could take as long as three weeks to arrive on the doormats of their respective owners, thousands of people flocked to their local Apple Stores, queueing through the day and into the night. So great was the demand that Apple Stores in New York and San Francisco sold out several models of their launch day stock just hours after they went on sale.

As is traditional at the launch of any iProduct worth its salt, Apple fans were camped outside Apple Stores across the States with sleeping bags and umbrellas overnight to be the first people in the world to pick up Jobs' new tablet.

With the new, dual-core A5 processor, trimmed down form factor and graphical performance claimed by Jobs to be nine times better than the original iPad, the iPad 2 is shaping up to be a worrying adversary for those tech firms that announced tablets at this year's MWC. You can take a look-see at what all the fuss is about in our exclusive hands-on video below.
