Cablegate: WikiLeaks release all US diplomatic cables

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 07:35 AM PDT

WikiLeaks has published 251,000 unredacted diplomatic cables, potentially placing US contacts, such as diplomats and human rights workers, in harm's way

WikiLeaks has announced the publication of all 251,000 of its US Embassy diplomatic cables, causing outrage in the US government and WikiLeaks' five major media partners.

The five papers that had been collaborating with WikiLeaks - The Guardian, The New York Times, France's Le Monde, Spain's El Pais and Germany's Der Spiegel - released a joint statement condemning the move, calling the decision "deplorable".

They had previously published material provided by WikiLeaks, editing the content to protect names and identities of those the stories might expose to danger. Many of the cables making up 'Cablegate' reportedly forego such precautions, leaving US contacts in foreign countries and governments exposed.

"We deplore the decision of WikiLeaks to publish the unredacted state department cables, which may put sources at risk." The joint statement reads. "Our previous dealings with WikiLeaks were on the clear basis that we would only publish cables which had been subjected to a thorough joint editing and clearance process... We cannot defend the needless publication of the complete data – indeed, we are united in condemning it."

The cables are believed to contain the identities of dozens of activists and contacts marked specifically by the US as needing their identities protected. Also included in the cables are the identities of victims of sexual attacks, victims of government persecution, and the locations of sensitive government facilities.

Reporters Without Borders was similarly damning over Wikileaks' actions. Before Cablegate, the organisation had been keeping a mirror site of all WikiLeaks' content, but in the wake of the new publications released a statement saying: "While it has not been demonstrated that lives have so far been put in danger by these revelations, the repercussions they could have for informants, such as dismissal, physical attacks and other reprisals, cannot be neglected."

Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, is currently on bail in the UK awaiting extradition to Sweden on charges of sexual assault. Last year, it was revealed that Apple had removed the Wikileaks app from its AppStore. Whether this latest release of information will spark new legal action - or indeed, any more serious repercussions - remains to be seen.

iPhone app news: 4oD now available on iPhone

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 06:09 AM PDT

Have some Peep Show and Glee on your iPhone.

Channel 4's catch-up TV service 4oD is now available on the iPhone.

The free app, developed by Nice Agency, has been a great success on the larger-screen iPad, and now has the iPhone 4's Retina Display for that extra little touch of clarity and crispness.

The new app brings TV from the last 30 days from Channel 4, More4 and E4, while there's no access to the US shows or the Channel 4 archive - which means no on-demand Father Ted. The channel says it is working on bringing that content to iOS devices.

There's also the option to buy the show to keep through iTunes.

4oD Catch-up for iPhone will work over Wi-Fi, but not 3G, adds to the device's growing list of TV-on-the-go services from UK broadcasters following Sky Go's arrival on the App Store.

Although it has an iPad and Android app, we're still waiting for the BBC iPlayer to be launched for the iPhone.

Weird News: Virgin joins the A-Team, missing iPhones

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Doom now not quite so Doomed
After 17 long years, Germany has finally lifted a sales ban on Doom that’s seen it confined to the sweaty shame of shelves in adult-only stores. The government body responsible has decided that the archaic spritesplash of a graphics engine no longer poses much of a threat to society, given that you can get more convincing looking hellspawn on an HTC Wildfire.

An iPhone 5 walks into a bar…
Stop, stop… We’ve heard this one before. Apple’s filed a report with the Busies in San Fran after one of their devices has gone walkabouts from a local pub. Just like last year. We’re not sure if the missing handset is the iPhone 5; if it is then someone at Apple’s probably spending this afternoon sharpening their CV.

Virgin goes retro

Ordered Virgin Media with TiVo? Don’t be surprised if Mr T rocks up in the A-Team van to install it for you. Or Daisy Duke. File this one squarely under ‘publicity stunt’, but Virgin’s embracing the retro and kitted out its vans and engineers with the look of the shows of yore. You know… just ‘cos.

Steve Jobs says tablets will fail

…Well, he did in 2003, anyway. Back then, Apple’s only dealing with the devices was the ill-fated Newton. In the uncovered interview, Jobs reasoned that people need a keyboard on their devices if email’s going to be a viable option. Without that, tablets would sink. Right you are, Steve. You know best. Tablets are rubbis- …oh, no, you’ve changed you mind? What? iPad? Oh. Ok. …Let’s just forget it.

BitTorrent TV
A downloader’s dream, this. Whereas most Smart TVs will think themselves clever merely for showing you Youtube videos and a Twitter feed, this goes above and beyond. The Vestel TV announced at IFA rams in the new BitTorrent certified ecosystem, which means you’ll be able to search, view and download everything in the file-sharers vaults. Exactly what you do with it is a matter for the courts.

Deus Ex kills Zumba
After a record-breaking 18 years at the number one slot, Zumba fitness has finally tumbled down the gaming charts. It’s been replaced by the rather awesome Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but whether this is due to Deus Ex’s quality - or just the fact that most of the UK is now as Zumba fit as the human body will physically allow - remains to be seen.

Touchscreen TV
LG’s gone and launched a telly that you can draw on, with a bundled stylus. We’d be keen to hear your proposed uses for this. So far all we can think of is pausing a football match to pretend you’re Andy Gray, or drawing moustaches on the X Factor judging panel. Might be embarrassing when yunguns in the house get used to this tech and start scribbling all over friends’ lesser TVs with a marker pen.

And finally…

This guy doesn’t like Lion very much
Any Mac users out there not happy with the experience offered by Mac OS X Lion? Even if you’re not completely satisfied, you’re probably still in better spirits than this chap.

LA Noire developers Team Bondi in administration

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 03:41 AM PDT

Games developer Team Bondi goes into administration following the release of its troubled L.A. Noire game

Despite releasing one of the strongest candidates for 2011's game of the year, L.A. Noire, developers Team Bondi have today gone into administration.

L.A. Noire, the mammoth detect-em-up set in 1940's Hollywood, was released back in May to massive critical acclaim. Scoring five out of five stars in our L.A. Noire review, T3 deputy editor Matt Hill called it "Rockstar's greatest achievement yet."

But all that suspect-chasing, witness-bashing goodness came with one great, thumping caveat: L.A. Noire spent seven years in development, and was Team Bondi's only ever release.

What went wrong? Well, aside from that epic production time that would have seen L.A. Noire comfortably take the gold for Longest Game Production Period in any year that didn't include Duke Nukem Forever, Team Bondi cropped up continually in the news courtesy of grumbling staffers, continuous delays and a switch of publishers from Sony to Rockstar Games (of Grand Theft Auto fame).

There was even an anonymous Twitter account set up, allegedly by an employee with a grudge to settle. "The game has been revamped, ported, and delayed four times." He or she tweets. "Rockstar spent more than Sony in their efforts to make it not suck."

L.A. Noire continues to do good business in the UK, sitting pretty on the video games sales charts at number ten until just this week. The members of Team Bondi, meanwhile, have reportedly now gone their separate ways to other developers. Does this mean it's time to hang up our fedoras for good? Here's hoping we won't have to wait six years to find out.

Samsung Wave 3 pictures: Hands-on at IFA 2011

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 03:10 AM PDT

Following the official unveiling of the Samsung Wave 3 at IFA 2011 we go hands-on with the first Samsung Bada 2.0 handset

Set to land as the first Samsung Bada 2.0 handset the Samsung Galaxy Wave 3 was officially unveiled at IFA 2011 yesterday with our first hands-on with the device resulting in a series of Samsung Wave 3 pictures.

Announced alongside the revamped edition of Samsung’s propriety mobile operating system the Wave 3 is to build on the strong foundations set by its two predecessors with a 5-megapixel rear mounted camera with integrated flash to be partnered by a second, VGA quality, forward-facing snapper.

Samsung Wave 3 pictures: Click here for hands-on pictures

Hosting a metal unibody design the Samsung Wave 3’s sleek finish is backed up by an impressive array of specs with a characteristically strong 4-inch Super AMOLED display joined by the same 1.4GHz dual-core processor found in the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Samsung Galaxy Note.

Whilst Bada’s catalogue of apps might not be as expansive as that of Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android platforms, the proprietary software has been well received since launching at Mobile World Congress last year. An exact Samsung Wave 3 release date has yet to be confirmed.

Would you forgo the Android and iOS app offerings in favour of the beautifully crafted Samsung Wave 3? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Toshiba Camileo Clip unveiled

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 02:59 AM PDT

Toshiba's Camileo Clip camcorder lets you film hands-free. With HD capability and a 10x optical zoom, it's sure to be hit

Toshiba’s Camileo camcorders have always been a byword for great video on a budget. And now the Japanese giant is rolling out a new pocket cam that it hopes will stem the tide of users moving to smartphones for their HD video hit.

The Camileo Clip can record in 1080p HD and has a 10x optical zoom when you drop the resolution down to HD Ready 720p. But it’s big feature is in the name: round the back there’s a clip, meaning you can attach it to yourself and film hands-free.

It’s a very neat trick and one which seems like a no brainer to us. The body is splash proof and ruggedised, making it perfect if you’re an extreme sports type who loves to film every jump, trick or fall as it happens.

There’s no on board storage, but that keeps size down, while SD cards up to 64GB are supported. The Camileo Clip is due to hit shelves in Q4, with final pricing to be confirmed.

Samsung Galaxy Note pictures: Hands-on at IFA 2011

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 02:56 AM PDT

Following the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note at IFA 2011 we go hands-on with the Google Android tablet come smartphone hybrid

Officially unveiled at IFA 2011 in Berlin yesterday the Samsung Galaxy Note has landed as a tablet come smartphone hybrid with a series of Samsung Galaxy Note pictures following our hands-on with the oversized device.

Boasting a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display the Samsung Galaxy Note is a full inch larger than its smartphone sibling, the Samsung Galaxy S II, with a 1280 x 800p resolution also eclipsing that of its dedicated handset counterpart.

Samsung Galaxy Note pictures: Click here for hands-on pictures

Much like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 which was unveiled alongside the Note, the 5.3-inch hybrid device sports a hefty 1.4GHz dual-core processor. An 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera with integrated flash is backed up by a second, 2-megapixel, forward-facing snapper.

Although being pitched as a go between for smartphones and tablets the Samsung Galaxy Note takes on a specific handset tilt through its inclusion of Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile operating system, overlooking the tablet-centric Honeycomb in favour of the leading smarphone OS.

Whilst Samsung has yet to officially confirm a Samsung Galaxy Note release date or price it is expected the device will land as part of a pre-Christmas push by the Korean tech firm which will also see the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the newly unveiled Samsung Wave 3.

Is there room for the Samsung Galaxy Note in the crowded market or do smartphones and tablets already cover off the full range of mobile user needs? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 unveiled at IFA 2011

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 02:53 AM PDT

Acer Iconia Tab A100 undercuts other 7-inch tablets, but might it lose out to the larger smartphones?

Not to be left out in the rash of tablet announcements in Berlin, Acer has thrown its hat into the ring with the Acer Iconia Tab A100, just announced at IFA 2011.

Coming in at a lower price point than other Android tablets on the market (£299 at launch, compared to the £400-£500 price tags attached to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Motorola Xoom), the Iconia Tab A100 also plumps for a smaller, 7-inch display to fit into the same, ebook reader-sized bracket as the BlackBerry PlayBook and the HTC Flyer.

Behind the 1024x600 display the Iconia Tab AT100 rocks the same 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor found in the Galaxy Tab and the Xoom, 512MB RAM and the standard one-front-one-back camera setup for video calling and regular photo snapping (5MP on the back, 2MP on the front).

Coming pre-loaded with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, the Iconia Tab A100 is a direct competitor for the 7-inch HTC Flyer, with similar specs across the board and an asking price of about £150 less, making it at first glance the better buy. We can't help but wonder, however, how much of a future there is in the 7-inch mini-tablet. With Acer already announcing a 4.8-inch Iconia Smartphone at IFA, and Samsung closing the size gap between smartphones and tablets with the 4.3-inch Galaxy S2 and recently-announced 5.3-inch Galaxy Note, splashing another £300+ on a tablet that only adds two inches of screen real estate seems like a big ask.

Is there a future in 7-inch tablets? Let us know via the T3 inbox or the official T3 Twitter feed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pictures: Hands-on at IFA 2011

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 02:23 AM PDT

Following the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 at IFA 2011 we go hands-on with the latest Google Android tablet

Samsung yesterday unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 at IFA 2011 in Berlin with the Google Android powered tablet posing for a series of Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pictures.

Landing with a 7.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, Samsung’s latest offering looks set to become king of the 7-inch tablets with a minimalist 7.89mm thick form factor seeing the Android 3.2 Honeycomb device tout a design almost one millimetre slimmer than the market dominating Apple iPad 2.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pictures: Click here to launch a hands-on gallery.

With a 3-megapixel rear-mounted camera joined by a second 2-megapixel front-facing snapper, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 follows on from the lawsuit hit Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and will host a 1.4GHz dual-core processor when it lands in UK stores.

Although a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 UK release date has yet to be confirmed, we have got cosy with the Android tablet to bring you our first, hands-on, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 review as well as a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 video.

Has the announcement of Samsung’s latest 7.7-inch Galaxy Tab given you second thoughts about which tablet to snap up ahead of the Christmas period? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Acer Iconia Smart phone spotted at IFA 2011

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 02:04 AM PDT

Acer Iconia Smart jumbo smartphone incoming, but has it missed the boat?

When we first saw the Acer Iconia Smart back at MWC in February, we marvelled at its then-gargantuan size. Put it next to the IFA-announced Samsung Note, however, and it's positively dainty, its 4.8-inch display almost conservative in the face of the 5.3-inch Note.

Of course, next to any other phone on the market the Iconia is a titan, although in terms of specs we fear the smartphone market has moved on since February. With a 1GHz processor, the Iconia Smart has already been out-spec'd by current-gen smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation. It's similarly lacking in RAM, with just 512MB to its name (the S2 and Sensation, meanwhile, push ahead with 1GB and 768MB, respectively).

The screen is a respectable 1024x480 pixels, though, so if screen size trumps performance for you in your list of mobile priorities, the Iconia might be the choice for you. The OS is up to date, running as it does Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread, and it's also a pleasingly hefty beast, with solid, chunky looks and a weight of 185g making the Iconia Smart a good counterpoint to the smartphone market's current size-zero obsession.

The Acer Iconia Smart should arrive sometime around the end of September, priced at 499 Euros (around £440).

PSN: 3 million new users since hack fiasco

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 01:01 AM PDT

PSN hacking crisis now a thing of the past says defiant CEO.

Sony says that it has added three million new users to its PSN services, just months after it was hit by one of the most wide-ranging and notorious hacks in history. The news was delivered by Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer, who said PSN’s woes were over.

"I'm pleased to tell you that the PSN is more secure and better than ever," he said. "We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more than 3 million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyberattacks."

The news suggests that the worst is indeed behind Sony. However, the attack is believed to have cost the company millions and its reputation has been battered due to revelations about how personal information was stored on its servers.

Have you signed up for PSN since the outage? Let us know about it over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

White iPod touch: more evidence leaks out

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Chatter of white iPod touch back in headlines with new range coming expected later this month.

Talk of a white iPod touch has been doing the rounds on Apple rumour blogs for months. But there’s nothing like some hard evidence to back up gossip about Cupertino’s plans for its next-gen PMP.

The Japanese Apple fanatics at Macotakara have laid their hands on a white headphone component which it says is tailor-made for the new iPod touch. It has the same slanted design as the headphone jack found on the current version of the media player.

The leak follows shots of a white front panel, which slipped out online late last week. Other than the colour change, experts expect the iPod touch to remain much the same, as Apple looks to make the iPad and iPhone its key priorities.

HTC Radar: unibody Windows Phone official

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 11:51 PM PDT

The HTC Radar smartphone has officially been launched following a series of online leaks that saw images of the handset being distributed over the internet before its launch

The HTC Titan isn’t the only new phone from the Taiwanese tech giant that runs Windows Phone Mango. The HTC Radar has just got official too, and as well as packing Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, it also touts some killer specs.

The aluminium unibody design is gorgeous and reminiscent of last year’s ace HTC Legend. It comes with 8GB of storage space, as well as a 5 megapixel camera for stills and 720p HD Ready video recording skills.

Inside there’s a nippy 1GHz processor, with DLNA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1. The 3.8-inch screen isn’t quite as capacious as the 4.7-inch number on the HTC Titan, but we’re willing to live without the extra screen real estate seeing as the Radar will be easier to cart about.

Like its new Windows Phone stablemate, the HTC Radar isn’t due on shelves until October, with prices and an exact release date yet to be confirmed. Either way, this is definitely a phone worth getting het up over.

HTC Titan Windows Phone Mango handset revealed

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 11:27 PM PDT

HTC Titan leads the line as the Taiwanese mobile maker switches its attention to Windows Phone smartphones.

HTC’s much-hyped Windows Phone Mango plans have finally been laid bare, with the stunning new HTC Titan leading the charge. This new specced out handset rocks a massive 4.7-inch screen, not to mention a super slim 9.9mm frame.

Under the hood you’ll find a 1.5Ghz processor, as well as an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 16GB of storage. That should be more than ample for thousands of tunes and a smattering of video.

Of course, the big draw here is Windows Phone Mango, offering system-wide improvements compared to the original Windows Phone 7 software. Multitasking is the headline grabbing feature, with deep Twitter integration also making an appearance.

You’ll be able to snag the HTC Titan from October, although it’ll be down to networks to sort out prices and contracts nearer the time. Keen? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Tech Today: HTC Titan & Radar Mango phones outed

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 06:03 PM PDT

With some more big news from the IFA 2011 tech fest and the latest Star Wars meddling from George Lucas, it's the tech news that broke after you logged-off.

Massive 4.7-inch HTC Titan unveiled at IFA
Titan by name, Titan by nature it seems. HTC has lifted the lid on its first Windows Phone Mango offering and the headline feature must be the whopping 4.7-inch screen. The LCD screen is surrounded by a mighty slim 9.9mm body and underneath the hood is a nifty 1.5GHz processor. It'll be out in October.

HTC Radar WP Mango phone also makes IFA debut
Also arriving in October is the somewhat smaller HTC Radar Windpws Phone Mango device. The slightly scaled back device has a 3.8-inch LCD display and a still-relatively-speedy 1GHz processor doing the heavy lifting. The device boasts a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash and can shoot video at 720p

Lenovo rolls-out really inexpensive IdeaPad A1 tablet
Responding directly to the demand for cheaper tablet devices, Lenovo has unveiled the IdeaPad A1 slate. The 7-inch device, which will run Android Gingerbread and boast full access to the Android Market will go on sale for a bargain busting $199 (that's about £120). You'll have to get one brought in from the US however, because it won't be landing on UK shores.

George Lucas messes with Star Wars again in Blu-ray version
The tinkerman has struck again by tweaking his greatest creations for the forthcoming Blu-ray edition of the movie. You know that scene when the Emperor is torturing Luke at the end of Return of the Jedi with Darth Vader watching on. Well, now, before Darth decides enough is enough and tosses his Sith master into the pit and restores balance to the Force, he let's out a big "Noooooooooooo"

Germans lift 17-year-old ban on Doom game
Back in 1994, the PC first-person shooter Doom was pretty hardcore and was banned by the reasonable folks in Germany who decide upon the media that is harmful to children. Well, after an appeal from Doom's creators, the ban has now been lifted because it's now only of historical significance and unlikely to be played by Children. Presumably they're more into massacring folks on their PS3.
