Mythical Back to the Future Nike Mag trainers released

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 07:26 AM PDT

1,500 pairs of Nike Air Mag Back to the Future trainers to be sold for charity

Having celebrated the 25th anniversary of the original Back to the Future release earlier this year the timeless film franchise is celebrating a new milestone as Nike officially launch the Nike Mag trainers which featured in Back to the Future II.

Precise replicas of the kicks which caught the world’s imagination in the Steve Spielberg film, 1,500 pairs of Nike Mag trainers are to go on sale via auction site eBay with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s.

The first pair of rechargeable footwear to come from Nike the Mag features the same glowing LED heel panel and electroluminescent NIKE logo in the shoe’s tongue strap that appeared in the film, with five hours of glow per charge. Sadly, despite a recent patent suggesting the company was working on the technology, self tying laces do not feature.

“We wanted to translate the excitement people have for the ‘greatest shoe never made’ and for Back to the Future into positive action,” said Nike CEO Mark Parker. He added that “the long-term objective is to raise awareness so the Foundation can achieve their goal of eradicating Parkinson’s disease.”

Fifty pairs of the Nike Mag trainers are to hit eBay every day for the next 10 days with the first batch of shoes going for as much as $9,000 (£5,639) per pair with 14 hours still to go. A single pair of the BTTF trainers will be sold in a private UK auction on September 18th.

What tech from Back to the Future would you most like to see enter the realms of reality? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy Note video teases handset's release

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 06:32 AM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy Note release date is expected in the coming weeks as Samsung launch a new Samsung Galaxy Note video

Following the device’s official unveiling at IFA 2011 last week Samsung has released a Samsung Galaxy Note video outlining the smartphone come tablet’s credentials ahead of a Samsung Galaxy Note release date.

Packing a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED HD display the Note plays host to a bevy of impressive specs with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor landing alongside 1GB of RAM.

Whilst we have already shown off the device in the T3 Samsung Galaxy Note Video, the new release marks Samsung’s first video release of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset.

Officially unveiled alongside the already injunction hit Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, the Samsung Galaxy Note lines up at just 9.65mm thick and features an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording credentials.

Samsung Galaxy Note pre-orders kicked off earlier this week with the oversized handset landing with a rather hefty £600 price tag.

Weird News: iPhone 5 missing again, IBM makes lunch

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 06:15 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

HP Touchpad refuses to go quietly
Despite HP canning the TouchPad a few weeks ago, the tablet refuses to disappear into the night. An £86 price tag has seen whatever stock there is fly off the shelves in such a way as to make HP decide to knock out another 200,000 units. Fancy some dirt cheap tablet action? You’d best move to the States.

The XXX domain battle begins
After a lengthy wait, the doors to the .XXX domains have opened, causing a race for the big name companies to try and secure them before anything porn related opens up and tarnishes their good name. Otherwise hapless customers might stumble upon www.sony.xxx and find less laptops and more… well… we’ll leave the puns to you.

Nike Air Mags make us happy
It’s happened. After years of hoping and dreaming, Nike has finally poured some time into making the one pair of shoes that everyone’s always wanted: the Air Mags from Back to the Future. The iconic self-tightening shoes are only a limited run at the mo, but if you’re lucky you’ll able to pick up a pair as Nike auctions them off on eBay. Still no hoverboards, though. Sort it out.

The body antenna
A new system of tech clothing looks set to end soldiers’ signal woes when out in the field. By stitching a network of antennas into the fabric, the communication kit in the helmet can guarantee crystal clear reception from pretty much anywhere. If everyone had garb made out of this stuff, Apple’s iPhone 4 antennagate probably wouldn’t have been such big news.

The processor sandwich

According to the Daily Mail, IBM’s future lies in sandwiches. Or at least that’s how its tried to explain the next generation of processors to its readers. The plan is to employ new technology that’ll allow processors to be built up in layers, which will result in taller chips capable of shifting digital info 1000 quickerer and betterer than the current crop.

Yahoo just called, to say, you’re fired

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz was given the sack this week after failing to turn the company’s fortunes around. Big ask. Nonetheless, the real hit of this juicy news fruit was that she wasn’t even given the decency of a proper dismissal. It did it over the phone. According to Bartz herself: 'These people f***ed me over.'

Invisibility tech becomes a reality
More military tech, coming this time in the form of Die Another Day-style invisible tanks. New technology swathed over the side of the behemoths can make them appear, in the eyes of heat-seeking cameras, to either take on the form of civilian vehicles or simply disappear altogether. All well and good, but it’s somewhat less convincing when you’re stood right in front of the thing.

And Finally…

Apple wants its iPhone 5 back
For the second year running, an iPhone prototype has gone missing in a bar. Apple’s not happy with whoever’s taken it. They want it back. They want it back right now…

Waterstones to rival Amazon Kindle with own e-reader

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 04:04 AM PDT

Waterstones has set a release date for its own e-reader device as it targets the Amazon Kindle

Following the success of the Amazon Kindle and the decline in physical book sales high street retailer Waterstones has announced it is to launch a dedicated Waterstones e-reader next year.

Looking to emulate the popularity of the Kindle and taking note of the move by US book retailer Barnes & Noble which released the Nook, Waterstones’ Managing Director James Daunt has confirmed the company’s own e-reader will hit stores in 2012.

"We in Waterstone's need to offer you a digital reader which is at least as good, and preferably substantially better, than that of our internet rival, and you will have a much better buying experience purchasing your books through us," Daunt announced.

Whilst specifications of the upcoming Waterstones’ e-reader have yet to be revealed Daunt stated that the project was “well down the planning line” with a Spring 2012 release date being pencilled in.

Could a Waterstones e-reader really challenge the market dominance of the Amazon Kindle? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola Facebook phone leaks as HTC ChaCha competitor

A claimed Motorola Facebook phone has leaked online with Motorola EX225 pictures appearing ahead of the handset’s official release.

Boasting a full QWERTY keyboard alongside a 2.4-inch capacitive touchscreen display the leaked Motorola EX225 is expected to see the Atrix manufacturer follow the likes of HTC and INQ and launch Facebook-centric pocket blower.

Whilst full specs of the outed handset are still rather hazy the prematurely revealed images show the device with deep Facebook integration on the homescreen and a dedicated Facebook button. We have contacted Motorola for an official comment on the leaked device.

Officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year HTC led the way with Facebook-orientated handsets launching the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa. Whilst the ChaCha landed with a 2.6-inch touchscreen display and full QWERTY keyboard the Salsa was released boasting a full touchscreen 3.4-inch display.

iOS app news: Google Music Beta web app launched

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Google's cloud storage locker makes waves on iOS devices.

Google has launched its Music Beta streaming service for iOS devices with an attractive, slick web app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The Music Beta service is accessible only through the Safari browser, rather than a native app, which means Google doesn't have to mess around getting Apple's approval for an official place in the App Store.

The intuitive app allows users to easily browse upto 20,000 songs they've uploaded through Google Music by flicking left and right between artists, albums, songs, playlists and genres.

Music playback is swift and navigating your way around the service is as effortless, if not more so, than the native Android Music Beta app.

While it remains in Beta, Google Music is free for invited users. It's presence on Apple's mobile gadgets will give iOS fans a real choice to make between Music Beta and the forthcoming iTunes Match service.

iTunes Match will scan your entire music collection and make it available for you to download on iOS gadgets for a yearly fee, but will force you to download the files locally, rather than stream them from the cloud as Music Beta does.

Let the battle of the cloud music lockers commence.
