iPhone app news: Viz Profanisaurus hits App Store

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 09:54 AM PDT

Find out the true definition of AC Slatering with Das Krapital racy reference book

The Viz Profanisaurus - the legendary rude slang dictionary - has transcended to a new medium with its first iPhone app.

The swearing bible, edited by the publication's fictional Roger Mellie "The Man on the Telly" character, features over 12,000 dirty definitions from "Ale Force Winds" to "Zipper Zeppelin" and comes to your iPhone or iPod touch for £1.49.

"Cross-linked entries enable you to finally make sense of what a sleeping fruit bat is and why you'd never want to mention knuckle glitter in polite company," says that app's brazen description on the App Store.

Naturally, the app allows you to share the sniggers with your Facebook and Twitter followers, while singling out your top definitions in the favourites section.

The arrival of the uncensored app is a curious one considering Apple's previous record with close-to-the-mark apps, baring sexual content, which Roger's profanisaurus.

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 08:19 AM PDT

HP TouchPad sales to continue with 200,000 new tablets to be manufactured to clear stocks

Following the recent news that HP has halted production of the HP TouchPad new reports have suggested the tech giant is to manufacture up to 200,000 more of the webOS tablets to clear component stocks.

In the wake of the HP TouchPad culling retailers slashed the price of the 1.2GHz dual-core processor boasting tablet with eager UK adopters able to snap up the basic 16GB model for as little as £89 whilst those looking to plump for the larger 32GB TouchPad offering had to part with just £115.

Whilst HP has previously confirmed that it is to add new stocks to the TouchPad sales in the US, it is currently unknown whether any or the reported 200,000 new TouchPad tablets will make it across the pond to UK retailers.

Lining up at just 13.7mm thick and 740grams in weight the HP TouchPad boasts a 1.3-megapixel rear-mounted camera alongside a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768p and a single mini USB port.

Telephone is the greatest ever gadget, says T3 readers

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 08:14 AM PDT

T3 readers beg to differ with Stephen Fry's list of greatest ever gadgets...

Last week we asked for your feedback on Stephen Fry’s somewhat controversial list of the most important, best and greatest gadgets ever. Fry positioned the humble cigarette lighter as his number one gadget.

While his definition of what a ‘gadget’ is allows allowed the list to contain such wonders as the bra, the stapler and the pen, we wanted to know your thoughts on his top ten.

The results were tight between it and the TV in second place, but the telephone scooped your favour by 3 per cent, with 24 per cent of the votes. Below the TV was, surprisingly, the Apple iPad, followed by the wristwatch, the lighter, the laptop, the ball point pen, the Apple iPod and the Typewriter.

Coming in at 10th, rather than the 9th position it held in Fry’s list, was another Apple product… the apple peeler.

Agree or disagree with the final results? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed, and then get stuck into this week’s poll: Which is the best tech to come out of IFA 2011?

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 06:42 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 5 release date later than expected with an October 21st arrival leaked

Although Apple’s long mooted next-generation smartphone has still to be officially announced a leaked screenshot of a launch strategy has suggested an iPhone 5 release date of October 21st is likely.

The release strategy, which comes from retailer Best Buy in the US, has added to the ever growing run of iPhone 5 rumours indicating that an iPhone 5 release date isn’t expected for a little under two months.

Detailed as simply an “Apple fixture” the leaked plans are believe to refer to the installation of in-store signage in preparation of the next Apple handset which is expected to land with an 8-megapixel camera, dual-core processor and a new slimmer form factor.

The seemingly endless iPhone 5 rumour mill has repeatedly suggested an October release for the iOS 5 is a possibility with recent reports suggesting the pocket blower has entered production whilst one German retailer has opened up iPhone 5 pre-orders to eager customers.

Channel Five set to go HD

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 02:22 AM PDT

Channel Five leading the way, but Welsh network S4C could also be in with a shout.

Channel Five looks set to go HD next year, with Ofcom announcing plans to bolster Freeview’s hi-def offering with a fifth channel. Ofcom has begun a bidding process, with final applications due by 17 October.

Five would be the obvious choice, with the BBC’s two HD channels and ITV and Channel 4 taking up the four current slots. However, because of Five’s minimal amount of original programming, Welsh channel S4C is expected to mount a strong challenge.

Word is that whoever gets the new channel will be able to launch it on 1 April 2012. That’s just over 15 years since Five was first aired.

The question is, would you be keen to watch Big Brother and the travails of England’s also-rans in the Europa League? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Vodafone UK confirms it is to stock the Samsung Galaxy S II white from today

Following the Samsung Galaxy S II White release last week mobile network provider Vodafone has announced it is to begin offering the lighter-toned Android device in the UK from today.

Featuring the same 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display that have made the original, black, Samsung Galaxy S II the UK’s most popular handset outselling Apple’s formerly dominant iPhone 4, the latest edition of the Android 2.3 handset differs only in its white coating.

Motorola Xoom slips to £329

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 01:00 AM PDT

32GB Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom now just £329, as slate struggles to sell.

The Motorola Xoom has just had another major price cut, this time being slashed to just £329 by Dixons. The 32GB Wi-Fi-only model is now significantly cheaper than the entry-level iPad.

On top of that, the 3G model now only costs £399, making it £100 cheaper than the 16GB 3G iPad. That’s sorely tempting, even if the 10.1-inch slate has been superseded since its release earlier this year.

The Xoom got off to a sluggish start, shifting just 100,000 in its first two months. But with the HP TouchPad’s bargain bucket success in recent weeks, it seems Moto is keen to cash in, perhaps ahead of a second bite at the tablet cherry. The Xoom 2 has already been leaked extensively and is expected before the year is out.

Tempted? Or are you holding out for an even bigger reduction? Let us known now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 reservations kick off

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 11:43 PM PDT

First come, first served tickets for iPhone 5 being handed out by Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom has become the first network to offer punters the chance to reserve an iPhone 5, even though the next-gen Apple handset hasn’t been made official. The network has confirmed the plans, which were leaked by a German iPhone blog last week.

German phone lovers who want an iPhone 5 will be able to pick up a reservation coupon from Deutsche Telekom stores as of today. A spokesman for the network said it would not hand over details of the new device or its release date.

The German carrier says it’s making the move to stop any bottlenecks when the phone does get released, with a mad rush for the long overdue mobile expected. The iPhone 5 is said to pack an 8 megapixel camera, larger screen and speedier A5 chipset.

HTC Flyer Android Honeycomb update: first screen shots

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 11:30 PM PDT

HTC Flyer owners look lively: Android Honeycomb is finally heading to your tablet.

The HTC Flyer, the Taiwanese mobile maker’s first foray into tablets, is finally set to get an Android Honeycomb update. The new software has been leaked online, with new screenshots showing just how the beefed up OS looks on the 7-inch slate.

Punters can now use the Flyer’s unique stylus on the entire device, instead of dedicated apps, while HTC Sense has been given a tablet makeover. It seems HTC is keen to ensure that its custom skin works with Honeycomb, despite suggestions from Google that the vanilla version of the OS is just fine.

Owners can get hold of the ROM for the new update now, although that comes with all the attendant risks of installing unreleased software. If you’re unsure, best wait until HTC begins the official roll out.

Can’t wait to get Honeycomb on your HTC Flyer? Or already priming yourself for the next-gen HTC Puccini tablet? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
