F1 2011 release date to host co-op championship mode

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 09:07 AM PDT

F1 2011 game to see co-op championship mode to allow gamers become team-mates with real life friends

The eagerly awaited F1 2011 game is to launch later this month with latest reports revealing the Formula 1 based title will feature a co-op Championship mode allowing gamers to partner with their friends to challenge for the constructors’ title.

With an F1 2011 release date set for September 23rd the game’s developer Codemasters has today announced that the follow-up to the BAFTA award winning F1 2010 will allow online gamers to join forces and compete as team-mates in an effort to claim top honours in the FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship.

Looking to further emulate the realism of the high-octane fast paced sport, F1 2011 will add co-op Championship modes to improved graphics and a new safety car feature with 16 person multiplayer allowing users to compete in a full grid of 24 vehicles including eight AI racers.

“Now when I look across the garage and see my team mate in there, I am not comparing myself against an AI team mate, I’m comparing myself against someone that I know personally,” said Chief Game Designer Stephen Hood. “I’m interested in who’s got the most points, who’s out-qualified me. It’s about trying to fight to be the leader of a team.  It makes for a completely different experience, playing with a friend. It’s now a personal game mode.”

Can F1 2011 challenge the likes of FIFA 12 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as one of the year’s top gaming releases? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich out October or November

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 03:02 AM PDT

Latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, expected before the year is out.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the next-gen version of Google’s mobile OS, will be out in October or November. That’s according to the Big G’s own Eric Schmidt, who mentioned the dates in passing during an interview with SalesForce.com.

This certainly ties in with other rumours surrounding the Google Nexus Prime, the first handset packing the new OS, which is expected to be released around the same time.

Ice Cream Sandwich was revealed earlier this year by Google, with the aim of bringing together Gingerbread and Honeycomb. The plan is to create an OS that works seamlessly across smartphones and tablets.

Optoma HD33 Full 3D projector official

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Optoma's new 3D projector gets official UK release.

Epson’s new EH-TW9000W projector impressed at IFA last week. But not to be outdone, Optoma has fired back with its new HD33 Full 3D projector. It’s been slapped with a UK release date and priced up for Blighty too.

Packing 10,000:1 contrast ratio and an impressive 1800 lumens brightness, this new picture spitter from Optoma promises to be the real deal. There are two HDMI ports for hooking up Blu-ray players and games consoles too.

Optoma’s also touting new proprietary tech, which it says makes the HD33 as good as a 3D projector that costs twice as much. Its new PureMotion4 tech maximises details, while the PureD feature optimises brightness and picture set up depending on surroundings.

The HD33 is up for grabs now, costing £1,349.99. One for home cinema buffs only, but certainly a gadget to lust after.

iCloud lawsuit dropped

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 01:19 AM PDT

Company set to change name as Apple tightens grip over iCloud name.

iCloud Communications has dropped its lawsuit against Apple over the use of its name. Instead, the VoIP service has decided to change its name to Clear Digital Communications.

The lawsuit, filed in June after Apple officially unveiled its iCloud offering, had aimed to get Cupertino to change the name of its service, as well as snag a decent amount of compensation.

Now though, the company has had a change of heart, saying it’s not interested in chasing Apple. There was no official line from the renamed firm, but at least Apple’s legal team can now focus on its other myriad courtroom battles.

Google Nexus Prime: Samsung confirms new handset's name

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:56 PM PDT

Will Google Nexus Prime come loaded with Android Ice Cream Sandwich?

Samsung appears to have unofficially confirmed the name of Google’s next flagship Android handset, the Nexus Prime. The name’s been bandied around for months, but now a User Agent Profile on Samsung’s website has slipped out the details.

Sadly, specs for the new device remain unclear, with the page currently acting as a placeholder, with the details of last year’s Nexus S copied in, rather than those of the Nexus Prime.

The Nexus Prime will have the model number GT-I9250. That should mean that gossip hounds will be able to unearth new details about the phone in the coming weeks.

With an October release expected, the Nexus Prime is likely to come loaded up with Android Ice Cream, making it the Big G’s best phone to date. For more on this and the rest of the day’s gadget news and gossip, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 test photo revealed

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:40 PM PDT

Image data points to this snap being taken by an Apple employee with an iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 silly season has been up and running for what feels like months. And now the latest, inevitable rumour to emerge surrounding Apple’s new phone has landed online: an image (seen here) taken using the iPhone 5’s camera.

The snap, reportedly taken by an Apple engineer and unearthed by PocketNow, has been cropped to 2235x2291. But the pic’s EXIF data reveals that the original shot was taken using an 8 megapixel camera, fitting in neatly with rumours about the camera’s sensor size.

Word is the image proves that the iPhone 5’s camera has an aperture to match a decent point-and-shoot compact, making this undoubtedly one of the new iPhone’s biggest features.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be released at the start of October. Tell us what you think about this latest rumour on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Cloud-based, photo storage and editing service heading to App Store

Adobe is bringing its Lightroom technology to iOS devices with the launch of the Carousel app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as well as Mac OS devices.

The idea is to enable your entire photo library to be viewed across a range of devices to enable easy sharing and easy editing. Any edits you make will also be synced across the all of your devices, while the original will be protected.

The subscription-based platform, to which you upload your library, allows you to alter the white balance, exposure, brightness and a host of other settings without having to worry about transferring the file back to your main computer.

"Thanks to Adobe Carousel, users never need to worry about wasting time syncing, remembering if a photo was saved to a particular device, or worrying about maxing out storage on their iPhone or iPad."

There's also a host of multi-touch gestures available to users and over a dozen "looks" to enable photographers to experiment with the appearance of photographs.

The service will cost $5.99 (£4) a month or $59.99 (£40) a year and the apps will land on the iOS and Mac App Stores later this month. Adobe says it is working on versions for the Android and Windows platforms.

UK 4G launch delayed

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:10 AM PDT

UK set to get left behind as 4G takes off around the globe.

The launch of 4G networks in the UK faces serious delay, with the regulator Ofcom saying that plans to auction off the spectrum in the first half of 2012 are “ambitious”. Ofcom has warned it won’t be possible to roll out 4G on these shores until “2013 at the earliest”.

Pushing back the auction until later next year will put the UK on the back foot as it looks to create Europe’s fastest data and broadband networks. Not only that, other countries will get access to slick new 4G handsets well before we do. This is already happening with LTE phones in the US.

The delay is down to legal squabbles between mobile networks, as well as difficulty in working out how the spectrum can be sold off while some of it is being used already by services such as Freeview.

Whatever happens, the chances of us Brits packing a LTE device in the next two years are extremely slim. Gutted? Tell us what you think Ofcom and the government should do to hurry things along on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple set to sell 86 millions iPhones this year

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Report includes projections for massive iPhone 5 sales.

Android might be cornering the smartphone market in the UK and US. But new research by Digitimes reckons that Apple’s still putting up a big fight, with 86 million iPhones expected to be shipped this year.

The report takes into account iPhone 5 sales, which it reckons will help the Cupertino company to make a late surge in 2011. The numbers compare well with 2010, when Apple flogged 47.5 million iPhones around the world.

Rather than breaking the smartphone space down by OS, Digitimes’ research looks at the mobile makers themselves. Nokia’s shipments are expected to slump to 74.4 million this year, from 100.3 million in 2010, while Samsung will almost triple its sales, up to 67 million from 23 million.

However, these projected figures rely on Apple getting the iPhone 5 out in the next few weeks. Chatter about an early October release date is rife, with the phone due to be announced a few days earlier.

Facebook iOS app gets major update

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Facebook iPhone app upgrade brings tagging smarts and improved design, but still no iPad app.

Facebook has finally seen fit to update its much-criticised iOS app, bringing a slew of new features and improved functionality. However, there’s still no iPad app, leaving owners of Apple’s slate stuck using the web version of the social network.

The big changes include an improved Profile design, along with the ability to tag friends and places in posts. The latter has been a huge miss and meant using the Facebook app has never come close to aping the real web experience.

You can also share external links more easily, as well as tweak privacy settings as you add new posts, with any changes being reflected on the Facebook website whenever you next log in.

Bug fixes and a tweaked Group page complete this hefty upgrade. Our initial play suggests Zuckerberg and co have definitely ironed out the kinks, but that it still feels sluggish in places. What do you think? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sonos OS X Lion friendly at last

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 11:26 PM PDT

Sonos had come in for criticism after its streaming service failed to work with OS X Lion.

Got a Sonos and loaded your Mac up with OS X Lion? Then today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. The music streaming software now works properly with with Apple’s new operating system, allowing you to effortlessly stream tracks to your multiroom music system.

The software was initially incompatible with Lion, with Apple changing the protocol used to share iTunes libraries over a network. However, the likes of Spotify continued to play nice, leading to uproar among those who’d stumped up for pricey Sonos kit.

In a post on Sonos’ official forum, the company’s VP of Quality Andrew Schulert said, “Thank you for your patience as we worked out this incompatibility issue. We're sorry if this interrupted your music listening in any way. If you still have questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Technical Support team.”

You can snag the update now via the Check for Updates option in the main menu on Sonos Controller for Mac. Early reports suggest there are no niggles. Got a Sonos? Tell us what you think of the fix on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 3: slimline battery points to sizer zero design

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 11:13 PM PDT

iPad 3 gossip heats up as rumours of new parts emerge from suppliers.

Apple looks set to make the iPad 3 even slimmer than the current 8.8mm iPad 2. News has emerged from supply chain sources in Taiwan that Cupertino has ordered a batch of lighter and thinner power packs for its next-gen slate.

Word from Taiwan Economic News suggests that these slimmer batteries will cost Apple up to 30 per cent more. With prices of tablets falling sharply though, it’s unlikely iPad hungry punters will have to bear the brunt of this increase.

On top of the new design, the new batteries are said to kick on for longer, meaning the iPad should keep going for longer than its purported 10 hours for surfing and watching video.

When the iPad 3 will actually hit shelves remains a mystery. Talk about an end of year update has died down, with most experts now expecting Apple to stick to its annual upgrade cycle, with a new version out in early 2012.
