Twitter ads scheduled to land in UK in October

Posted: 11 Sep 2011 04:26 AM PDT

Advertisements on Twitter...what next?

Tweets which have been paid for, as well as trends and promoted accounts, have been in existence for over a year from Twitter's US office.

Now this service is coming to UK. Brands pay Twitter for a tweet to appear in timelines of users who aren't following them, to promote accounts and also pay for topics to appear in the trending topics list.

The ads users see is based on their followers, whom they follow, which makes it a tailored opportunity for advertisers.

The microblogging firm's members have been negotiating with UK-based media agencies, offering bundled deals (rumoured to be up to six-figures) for promoted tweets, trends and accounts.

Another rumour is that ads will be rolled out on a regional basis as well. Twitter is said to have spoken with O2, Vodafone, Sky and Sony about using Twitter ads before the launch was delayed this year.

Have you ever followed a promoted account? Let us know what you think of ads on Twitter through T3's Twitter and Facebook accounts and stay tuned in for more news from the world of tech.

Battlefield 3 with 1.25 million pre-orders confirmed

Posted: 11 Sep 2011 02:30 AM PDT

Are you ready for the battlefield?

Battlefield 3 has 1.24 million pre-orders, according to Eric Brown, CFO, Electronic Arts.

Brown announced this at the City 2011 Tech conference last week. He said the orders show the game is doing better than its prior title, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

"To date we have about 1.25 million preorders on Battlefield 3, so it's still well ahead of its predecessor title, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, in regards to preorders in the same number of weeks till launch. So it's doing very well," Brown said.

The marketing budget for this title is set to be larger than that of The Old Republic, he added. "It's going to be a different spend curve," he said.

"We have the advantage of a two-and-a-half week early launch window versus our competitor [Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3], and we intend to use that."

Battlefield 3 is scheduled to launch in October 2011 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Government bans civil servants from using Facebook

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 07:33 AM PDT

Facebook banned at work...again.

According to a report by the Press Association (PA), the government has revealed that civil servants have been banned from accessing Facebook.

However, staff at the Department for Work and Pensions can still access Twitter and LinkedIn for work-related purposes.

"The department recognises social media is a valuable tool for engaging with jobseekers and partners," said Chris Grayling, employment minister.

He added sites like Facebook have been restricted or blocked, even though communications workers could still log in to Facebook because they needed to use social media.

This information was revealed after a written Parliamentary question from East Dunbartonshire Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson.

Are you allowed to access Facebook and Twitter at work? Let us know through our Twitter and Facebook feeds (if you can get through!) and stay tuned in for more tech news.

Android to race ahead of iPhone in app downloads

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 06:37 AM PDT

Android decides to take a bite out of Apple

UK-based research firm Ovum has predicted that in 2011, Android app downloads will surpass those downloaded by iOS devices.

If this happens, it will be the first time Android tops Apple in the app download race. According to Ovum, downloads from Android devices will hit 8.1 billion by the end of this year.

On the other hand, iOS apps will lay claim to 6 billion downloads. However, its app downloads have grown just under three times as compared to 2.7 billion downloads in 2010.

However, the growth in Android app downloads is impressive given it saw only 1.4 billion downloads in 2010.

The total number of app downloads this year is estimated to be 18 billion by the end of the year, as compared to 7.4 billion at the end of 2010.

By 2015, Windows Phone OS is predicted to overtake BlackBerry in terms of number of app downloads and app revenues.

Microsoft's online services suffer from outage

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 04:58 AM PDT

Were you affected by Microsoft's outage?

On Friday morning, millions of Hotmail and other Microsoft online service users were unable to access their accounts, after a cloud failure.

In addition to Hotmail, Office 365 and the Skydrive storage system suffered.

According to Microsoft, the outage cause was related to the Domain Name System (DNS).

The issues started at around 4am BST, and was fixed, according to the company, at 5.45am, although it took some time for the results to be seen, causing the problems to last for two-and-a-half hours.

"We have completed propagating our DNS configuration changes around the world, and have restored service for most customers," it said on its blog.

Let us know via Twitter and Facebook if you were affected by the cloud failure, and remember to follow us for more tech updates.

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

iPhone app news: Facebook overhauls iOS app
Facebook has made some long-awaited changes to its app for iPhone and iPod touch.  There's a new profile design as well as the ability to tag friends in posts and places. It's also easier to share external links. Sadly for iPad owners, there's still no sign of that mythical Facebook for iPad app.

iOS app news: Music Beta by Google arrives through web app
As Apple prepares to launch iTunes Match, Google has given its own cloud music locker a platform on iOS devices. Music Beta by Google now has a web app, accessible through the Safari browser. The interface is slick and attractive and while Music Beta remains free to invited users, it's definitely worth a try.

iPhone app news: Viz Profanisaurus curses its way onto iOS
Britain's legendary swearing dictionary the Viz Profanisaurus has arrived on the iPhone, skirting Apple's strict rules on adult content. If you ever wanted to know the real meaning behind "Darth Vader's hat-stand" or Zipper Zeppelin" then grab this app and allow hilarity to prevail

iPhone app news: Foody app is like Foursquare but for healthy eating
Sticking to a diet can be hard work, but when you can earn rewards and lord victories over your friends then it becomes something moderately entertaining. The Foozy app for iPhone will calculate your daily intake and give you advice on what you need to work on.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART

Android app review Chord! (Guitar chord finder)
We're a little bit iOS-heavy on news this week, so let's kick the reviews off with a five-star Android corker. This app is a digital gateway to every guitar chord in existence, complete with diagrams of how to finger it, and a sample sound to measure your own technique against. There's also an awesome reverse chord search allowing you to add in the tablature and the app will tell you its name. Chord! for Android review

iPhone app review: Grow Your Own
Rest assured, this app isn't going to require you to turn your loft into a cannabis factory, it's all quite legal. The Grow Your Own app from the Royal Horticultural Society offers a guide to producing your own produce from planting the seeds to reaping the rewards come harvest time. With the price of groceries escalating, there's never been a better time to grow your own.

iPad app news: War Pinball
Pinball games are yet another medium the iPad lends it to more than its smaller screen counterpart. Perhaps the best pinball wizard out there at the moment is the movie-themed War Pinball for iPad There's a host of complex tables, the pick of the bunch being a 3D Chuck Norris 'Missing in Action' playing environment.
