Android app news: WD 2go brings remote HDD access Posted: 13 Sep 2011 12:41 PM PDT
Remote access to every file on your Western Digital hard-drive. Just plug it into your router. Western Digital has launched a new app for iPhone, iPad and Android, which allows users to access files from their home external hard-drive, wherever they roam.
The WD 2go app offers cloud access to all the files you have saved on your Western Digital My Book Live external hard-drive, providing it is plugged into your home router.
The app, for example, would allow you to access your entire music collection without the need to sign up for a cloud locker service like Google Music or iTunes Match.
Another neat piece of functionality also uploads the any photos and videos you take using your phone and backs them up to the My Book Live device. Pretty cool.

Mac sales rise, but iPod sales continue their inexorable decline. Apple isn’t set to release its official figures for the current quarter for a few weeks yet. But analyst Gene Munster has handed over official data compiled in the US by NPD, which suggests Mac sales have jumped by a massive 22 per cent year-on-year in recent months.
That’s down to the release of the ace new MacBook Air, updated Mac Mini and, of course, OS X Lion. The jump is compared to the same time period last year, with Munster predicting that sales will slow in September, with a quarter-on-quarter rise of 16 per cent.
That still represents a huge win for Apple, which has ditched its old-school MacBook and refreshed its entire Mac range in 2011.
However, there is a note of caution for Cupertino. Munster says iPod sales have fallen drastically, with a 16 per cent drop in July and August. It seems the ultimate PMP is on an inexorable decline.

HTC Runnymede: official snap leaks Posted: 13 Sep 2011 01:00 AM PDT
No word on when HTC Runnymede will be hitting shelves. HTC Runnymede, the Taiwanese mobile maker’s next-gen Android handset, is the subject of yet another leak, with a new press shot of the device emerging. It comes just days after its specs slipped out online.
The handset, seemingly named by an insider obsessed with the site of the creation of early English democracy, appears to take its design cue from the newly announced HTC Radar. That phone uses Windows Phone Mango, while the Runnymede packs Android.
Under the hood, there’s said to be a 1.5GHz processor and either 16 or 32GB of storage, depending on which variant you plump for. The camera is also rumoured to be the handset’s biggest feature.
The 16GB model will cost £530 SIM-free, while the 32GB will come in at £560. There’s no word on when HTC will give the phone the official nod, although a US event on 20 September seems likely. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
HTC: we don't want to kill the iPhone Posted: 12 Sep 2011 11:44 PM PDT
Comments come after HTC chief Martin Fichter said the iPhone was no longer cool. HTC’s American chief, Martin Fichter, has said he doesn’t like the term “iPhone killer” and that his company is not out to take Apple’s device down. He said HTC was looking to do something different, rather than simply ape the iPhone.
In an interview with Geekwire, Fichter said, “I don’t think we want to kill the iPhone because it is geared to a certain amount of people who like things in a certain way, and we do something different.”
He went on to add, “If you want to do the same thing as iPhone in exactly the same way, why don’t you send your people to the Apple store and have them buy an iPhone?”
Fichter claimed that if you looked at who was buying HTC handsets, they were very different to those stumping up for iPhones. His comments came after an earlier interview in which he said that iPHones were no longer cool because “Dads own them”.
Do you agree with Fichter? Or is he trying to warm up relations after a series of legal spats between the two mobile makers? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS dated Posted: 12 Sep 2011 11:27 PM PDT
Japanese gamers set to get Super Mario 3D Land and Nintendo 3DS soon. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, two of the most anticipated games for the Nintendo 3DS, have been slapped with release dates. Well, in Japan at least. Super Mario 3D Land hits shelves on 3 November, with Mario Kart 7 coming on 7 December.
The news was revealed by Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata, speaking ahead of this year’s Tokyo Games Show, which starts this Thursday, 15 September. Sadly, no news about a UK release date has been revealed, although you can expect to hear official word very soon.
Super Mario 3D Land is likely to make the 3DS a must-have for Christmas, with Mario Kart 7 also proving pretty tempting. The console’s price was slashed over the summer following poorer than expected sales.
