Sony PlayStation Vita will be region-free

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 04:51 AM PDT

Sony bigwig confirms region-free on Twitter

More good news for gamers waiting to get their hands on Sony's upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld: Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed via Twitter that the device will be region-free, meaning that games released earlier in (or exclusive to), say, Japan will play on European and US Vitas. Or, if you really can't wait for the handheld's release here in Blighty, it means you can order a Japanese Vita and not have to worry about whether or not UK-purchased games will be compatible (if you can get your head round the Japanese version of the OS).

Yoshida made the announcement on his official Twitter feed after being asked the region-free question directly by a follower. @lonelypessimist asked: "is it confirmed yet if vita is region free?" to which @yosp replied "yes it is". Can't say clearer than that.

Sony's PlayStation Vita was officially confirmed back at this year's E3, with Sony promising gamers a host of big name launch titles and top-tier studios signed on to produce content. However, gamers in Europe and the States will have a longer wait to get hold of the Sony handheld than those in its native Japan, with Sony recently confirming the 17th of December as the Japanese release date, with the rest of the world to follow in the new year.

Sony: PSN users must not file class action lawsuits

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 03:28 AM PDT

Sony protects itself from lawsuits in the wake of future hack attacks.

There's a sinister surprise lurking in the new terms and conditions for Sony's PlayStation network. In accepting the latest T&Cs when signing in on their PS3s, users are waiving their rights to join a class action lawsuit against the company at any time in the future over security breaches.

The new agreement leaves PlayStation gamers in a bind: if you want to log in to the PSN to play games online or use the store, you'll have to agree to the terms. If your plans for the future involve buddying up and suing Sony, your PlayStation will have to remain offline.

According to the new agreement, "any Dispute Resolution Proceedings, whether in arbitration or court, will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class or representative action or as a named or unnamed member in a class, consolidated, representative or private attorney general action."

Sony has had a troubled year so far, with hackers targeting its PlayStation network back in April and making off with millions of username and password combinations. Sony responded by shutting down the PlayStation Network and advising gamers to change their credit card information, but are still facing a class action lawsuit by irked gamers that could reportedly cost the company billions of dollars.

Portal free on Steam until September 20th

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 02:59 AM PDT

Original Portal available to all Steam users free until Tuesday, September 20th.

As if the next few months weren't going to be distracting enough for gamers, Valve have gone and made its first-person puzzler Portal available to all gratis on Steam until Tuesday the 20th of September.

Portal, which launched back in 2007 alongside Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 2, went on to be a surprise runaway success, scoring 95 out of 100 on Metacritic across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC and leading to the equally well-received Portal 2, which picked up the Best PC Game, Best Xbox 360 game and Best PlayStation 3 game at the 2010 E3 awards ceremony.

Trapped underground in the abandoned laboratories of the sinister Aperture Science, players must navigate a selection of testing chambers using a pair of reality-bending connecting portals. Standing between the player and freedom are roomfulls of poisonous goop, chatty machine gun turrets and a sociopathic robot invigilator with a fondness for neurotoxin.

Would-be test subjects eager to further the cause of science need only download a copy of Steam and search for Portal to get in on the action. Missed out on Portal the first time around? Check out the teaser below for a look at what all the fuss is about.
