iOS app news: iMessage to be built into iChat?

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:42 PM PDT

Free messaging between Mac and iPhone users in the offing, reports claim.

Apple is building its forthcoming iMessage application into iChat, according to code discovered within the a new version of the Mac OS X instant messaging client.

Announced as part of iOS 5 in June, iMessage brings free text and multi-media messaging between iOS users over 3G, offering a similar service to BlackBerry Messenger and Google Talk on other platforms.

Now Apple is preparing to extend the functionality to the Skype-alike iChat IM service that's been a staple of Mac OS X since its inception.

That would enable iPhone users to exchange pictures and messages for free with iPhone users, and vice versa.

The reason for this hope comes from a few lines of code discovered by a developer peering into a new iteration of the iChat application.

The code now features evidence of 'read' and 'delivered' notifications, which weren't present in the previous version. Those same notifications have been promised as part of iMessage.

iMessage will arrive for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch when iOS is launched 'this fall'. The latest speculation suggests that the new version of the OS will arrive on or around October 10th.

HTC Sensation XE release date set for later this month as the first HTC smartphone to boast Beats by Dr. Dre Audio technology

HTC has officially unveiled its first handset to come packed with Beats Audio technology outing a revamped version of its current flagship device in the HTC Sensation XE.

Whilst the HTC Sensation XE marks the Taiwanese company’s first use of its recently acquired stake in Beats Audio, the XE packs numerous other new bells and whistles that go deeper than its improved audio output.

Adding extra weight behind its already hefty punch HTC has upgraded the Sensation’s original 1.2GHz dual-core processor to a Samsung Galaxy S II topping 1.5GHz dual-core offering. This is backed up by 769MB of RAM and Google’s Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread mobile operating system.

"Audio is a crucial part of any consumer’s mobile experience,” said Jason Mackenzie, president of global sales and marketing, HTC Corporation. “We are continually pushing the audio boundaries to encompass not only improved voice but music, movies and games."

Whilst an exact HTC Sensation XE release date has yet to be announced a ‘late September’ arrival has been touted. HTC Sensation XE price and network information is also still unknown.

Samsung Windows 8 tablet given away to devs

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 03:12 AM PDT

Developers get to try out Windows 8 on Samsung-made tablet.

Microsoft handed out 5,000 new Windows 8 tablets to developers at its Build conference last night, following the official unveiling of its new OS. The tablet, Samsung’s Slate PC 7 Series, is loaded with the new OS, with developers able to test and build new software on it.

With an 11.6-inch screen and 64GB SSD, this tablet is much larger than the even the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom. Yet despite having a full-on desktop OS on board, it can boot in just three seconds.

There’s also a cool ‘connected standby’ feature, which lets the tablet snag updates from the web without powering up fully. Devs were given 2GB of data access too, lasting for the next year.

Windows 8 is expected to be released to the public next year. But with dev builds out there, expect to hear plenty of news about what it can do before you can officially lay your hands on it.

Nintendo 3DS set for 3D video recording upgrade

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:15 AM PDT

3D recording among a string of updates for Nintendo 3DS, as gaming giant looks to bolster sluggish sales.

The Nintendo 3DS will get 3D video recording as standard as part of a wide-ranging firmware update. The news comes straight from Ninty top dog Satoru Iwata, speaking ahead of the Tokyo Games Show, which starts tomorrow.

As well as being able to shoot clips in three dimensions, 3DS owners will get an improved eShop and Mii Plaza, the latter possibly including new SpotPass features.

The 3DS has failed to catch on in the same way as its DS predecessor, with sales failing to hit the same heights. This led to Nintendo slashing the cost of the console over the summer, and this new update will doubtless be seen as an attempt to create greater appeal around the product.

Is 3D video recording enough to tempt you into buying a 3DS? Or does Nintendo need to focus on improving its games catalogue first? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HTC Bliss and HTC Runnymede: full specs outed

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 01:00 AM PDT

HTC Bliss is female focused smartphone, HTC Runnymede is new unibody Android blower.

All the chatter about Android handsets this summer has focused on the odd glimpses of HTC’s new handsets, Bliss and Runnymede. And after spy shots, leaked press images and partial spec leaks, now full details on both handsets have been revealed.

The HTC Bliss, the Taiwanese mobile maker’s smartphone aimed squarely at women, is set to come with a ‘charm indicator’ which will glow when texts, calls and emails come in. The idea is it’ll sit on a key ring or the outside of a handbag, meaning users won’t have to delve into their bags every time they hear a distant ringtone.

On top of that, the Bliss packs a 3.7-inch panel, 5 megapixel camera, 720p HD video recording smarts and a front-facing camera to boot.

But it’s the HTC Runnymede that looks set to take up the mantle as the company’s current flagship Android device. Taking its unibody design cue from the Windows Phone-packing Radar, it matches HTC’s other new Windows Phone, the Titan, in the screen department, with a huge 4.7-inch panel.

It measures just 9.9mm thin, comes with 16GB storage, an 8 megapixel camera and HD Ready video skills. Some models will even come bundled with Beats Audio headphones, making this is serious proposition for music fanatics.

HTC is expected to officially announce these phones in the next few weeks, with release dates likely to follow before Christmas.

Windows 8 preview rolled out

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:43 PM PDT

Microsoft hoping Windows 8 can be a game changer for tablets and PCs.

Windows 8 has been officially rolled out to developers, with Microsoft showing off the newest version of its desktop operating system at its Build conference in California. The new OS is based on the same interface as its Windows Phone offering and works on tablets as well as PCs.

The new design is aimed at combining the traditional Windows experience with one that works properly with a touchscreen device, something Windows 7 failed to do. There’s no more Start menu, instead a home screen which is based around Windows Phones Live Tiles feature.

Apps will be available from a new Windows Store, which will make it easier for users to find and download the add-ons they like. However, Microsoft is leaving itself open to accusations that it’s simply following in the footsteps of Apple and its Mac App Store.

Currently, devs are digging around to discover more about what Windows 8 has in store for everyone. Stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more news and hands-on previews.

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:30 PM PDT

Apple tells support division to get ready for high influx of calls. Is iOS 5 about to be unleashed?

Apple looks set to release iOS 5 on 10 October, with chatter emerging from its AppleCare support service about the launch. A “person familiar with the matter” has told AppleInsider that AppleCare has been warned about call volumes soaring by up to eight times on that day.
