iPad app news: The Daily launched in the UK

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 10:17 AM PDT

Shame every story is still about the US

The Daily, the iPad-only newspaper which is a collaboration between Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and Apple has now launched in the UK.

The Daily costs 69p a day to subscribe to, or just £27.99 for an entire yearly subscription, has launched very quietly in the UK compared to the massive fanfare which greeted its arrival across the pond.

There has been no official announcement, but The Daily has appeared on the UK App Store. as discovered by The Guardian.

The Daily, which currently features US-centric content isn't offering much for UK-based users at present, but we'd certainly hope that the 100-strong editorial team we've heard so much about gets cracking on writing some stories about the old country.

Commenters on iTunes certainly aren't satisfied with the level of non-localised content at present, and it appears that they only thing that's changed is the $ for the £ sign.

For the moment we'd suggest sticking to a free alternative like Flipboard for content perfectly tailored to your desires in a well-designed, digital magazine.

The paper was initially scheduled to launch in the UK in June this year, so at least it's here.

Apple reclaims 'world's thinnest smartphone' title

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 09:18 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 4 pips Samsung Galaxy S II to world's thinnest title

Apple has reclaimed its crown as the producer of the ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’ after the iPhone 4 was deemed by the Advertising Standards Authority to be slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Whilst the Android powered Samsung Galaxy S II is a mere 8.71mm thick at its slimmest point the handset’s “prominent bulges” at the base of its form factor see it exceed Apple iPhone 9.3mm thick benchmark.

"Apple said consumers would not be interested in the thinnest part of the device, but in its overall measurements, as these would, for example, affect whether the device could fit into a pocket or purse," the Advertising Standard Authority ruling said.

Apple and Samsung have been in a longstanding legal dispute over Samsung’s claimed patent and intellectual property infringements that have seen the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 both band by certain European courts.

Which of the two smartphone powerhouses most take your fancy, Apple’s iPhone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S II? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

F1 2011 PS Vita gamplay video unveiled ahead of launch

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 04:39 AM PDT

F1 2011 game to hit the new portable PlayStation console with the first F1 2011 PS Vita trailer revealed

Developer Codemasters has released an F1 2011 gameplay video of the title’s PS Vita bound release with the next-generation portable PlayStation console offering less than impressive results.

Whilst we should stress that all content shown in the trailer is taken from a ‘Work in Progress’ build of the Formula 1 centric title, the graphics on offer appear at times heavily pixelated with squared of wheels and less than fluid movements.

Confirmed as one of the launch titles for the handheld console ahead of the official PS Vita release date on December 17th in Japan the portable version of F1 2011 will land almost three months after its home console arrival.

With an F1 2011 release date set for September 23rd the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of the game looks set to be a big upgrade on the already impressive F1 2010 with co-op multiplayer gaming to allow two users to pair up as online teammates to challenge for the F1 Constructers Championship.

Can F1 2011 challenge the likes of FIFA 12, PES 2012 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the year’s top gaming release? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Dyson Hot fan heater unveiled as room monitoring multiplier

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 04:03 AM PDT

Dyson expand air multiplier range with new Dyson Hot fan heater

Dyson has announced it is to expand its luxurious range of homewear products with the Dyson Hot to utilise the same air multiplier technologies found within its range of fans in order to heat rooms.

Designed to heat a whole room and not merely pump out electrical warmth, the Dyson Hot fan can be pre-set at a desired heat between 1 and 37 degrees Celsius, accelerating air across airfoil-shaped ramp to channel its direction.

Featuring an inbuilt thermometer to keep track of the room’s temperature, the Dyson Hot measures surrounding air turning the heater back on only if a drop is detected in order to maintain a standard temperature at all times.

“Other fan heaters rely on inefficient motors or dust friendly grills,” said Dyson founder and mastermind Sir James Dyson. “As the heat rises you’re left with a partially heated room and a worrying burning smell. Dyson engineers have developed a heater that produces no smell and heats the whole room.”

Available from Dyson.co.uk and John Lewis stores now the Dyson Hot will go on widespread sale next month with a £269.99 price tag.

Does the Dyson Hot have you looking forward to relaxing in a toasty winter room or are you unimpressed by this feat of engineering? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Flight Search revealed

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 02:49 AM PDT

New Flight Search offer comes after Google bought flight data company ITA.

Google has pulled the covers off of its new Flight Search function, a new tab which appears when users input a standard Google request for flights from one destination to another.

This new service not only displays a map to show you how you get from A to B, but also flight schedules and cheap prices via a comparative bar chart. You can even tweak your destination, finding out where you can get to from your location depending on your budget. There are also direct links to airline company websites so you can book.

At the moment, this is a US only feature and only lets you search return economy flights within the country. However, it’s very cool and promises to give the likes of Kayak something to seriously ponder. Take a look at the video below to see it in action.

Have you tried Google Flight Search? Let us know what you think of it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

BlackBerry PlayBook outsold by iPad 19:1

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 02:12 AM PDT

New figures look set to show how BlackBerry PlayBook has failed to get close to Apple's iPad or Samsung's Galaxy tablets.

The BlackBerry PlayBook has been hammered by the iPad over the summer, with official stats likely to show that RIM’s slate was outsold by a massive 19 to one by Apple’s bestselling slate.

The news comes from a survey of analysts commissioned by Bloomberg. RIM is due to deliver figures for the first full quarter the PlayBook was on sale today, with tech watchers claiming they’ve sold a mere 490,000. That compares to 9.25 million iPads in the last quarter.

It’s a bitter blow for RIM, which touted the PlayBook as a trailblazer and iPad-botherer when it was first shown off in the autumn of 2010. But its lack of a native email client and failure to hit shelves quickly seems to have done for it.

The same analysts claim RIM will sell roughly 2.2 million PlayBooks in total this year, with Samsung shifting 7 million Android tablets and Apple way out front with 39.2 million iPads.

Which ever way you cut it, this has been a bad year for RIM. The PlayBook’s not a bad device, but it needs more care and attention if it’s ever going to be able to compete. Got a PlayBook? Tell us what you think of it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Want to know more about the BlackBerry PlayBook? Here's the 10 things you need to know about RIM's first tablet.

Facebook Subscribe button revealed

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 12:58 AM PDT

Facebook Subscribe button looks to take on Twitter, while adding new ways to sort what you see from friends.

Facebook has unveiled a new Subscribe button, which allows you to choose exactly what kind of updates you see from friends. It also lets you follow users who you’re not friends with.

The new feature, officially detailed by the social network last night, means you can choose to see all updates, most updates or important updates only. What’s more, you can specify which types of updates you do and don’t want to see. That means if you couldn’t care less when a friend’s playing a new game, or uploading more snaps, you can opt out of that aspect of their feed.

But it’s the option to subscribe to users who aren’t your friends that’s the big news here, with comparisons to Twitter bound to be drawn. It means you can follow updates from well known figures, as long as they allow subscriptions to their updates.

Regular users can also allow non-friends to check out their updates, by hitting the ‘Allow Subscriptions’ on the subscriptions page. Only public updates will be visible if you choose to do this.

The new offering is available now. Give it a go and let us know what you think of it over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Windows 8: 500,000 downloads so far

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 11:18 PM PDT

Big M shifts half a million copies of Windows 8 in first 12 hours.

Windows 8 was downloaded 500,000 times in its first 12 hours. The news was announced at the Build conference in California by Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer. The developer preview of the software was detailed extensively earlier this week.

Speaking of the updated OS, Ballmer said, “We still have a long way to go with Windows 8.” However, initial impressions have been good, with Microsoft hoping it can take the fight to iOS and the iPad in particular.

Windows 8’s biggest draw is its ability to work seamlessly across tablets and PCs, with proper touch integration and a new look Start screen, based on the design of Microsoft’s Windows Phone.
