News@8pm: Apple iPad 2 launch delays and 3D porn Posted: 01 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Apple iPad 2 release day is tomorrow and ahead of the second-gen tablet arrival, Apple has stopped shipping the original iPad to retailers in preparation of the new stock push. If reports are to be believed, however, we could be seeing drastic stock shortages ahead of the iPad 2 launch as Apple is claimed to be struggling to produce the iPad 2's ultra thin display to high enough quantities.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apple leader news comes from both the acting CEO and the CEO by title today as Tim Cook and Steve Jobs make headlines respectively. Whilst stand-in leader Tim Cook has been quoted hinting towards an upcoming cheaper iPhone, his boss, Steve Jobs has been put forward for an honorary knighthood with the plans reportedly scrapped in their late stages by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown due to a petty retaliation.
3D porn lands in Europe today as adult magazine Penthouse launches the world's first 3D adult channel with all the HD nastiness now coming via the emerging extra dimension tech. Other new, albeit less sexy, tech arrivals today saw Google unveil the latest Android OS statue representation at its Android HQ as Honeycomb adopts its physical form.
Emerging mobile technologies are set to touch down in the coming months as RIM confirms that all future BlackBerry smartphones and tablets are to feature NFC tech as standard. Joining NFC on the new smartphone feature front, LG's dual-core processor touting Optimus 2X has been officially dated for release with the high-speed handset to hit the UK and Europe later this month.

Android phones and tablets get iDisplay app Posted: 01 Mar 2011 10:10 AM PST View the same desktop on both devices. Sharpe services today served up a boost to new Android tablet owners, but launching its iDisplay app which allows users to turn their Google-powered device into a secondary computer monitor.
The Android app, which is compatible with both Windows and Apple computers means that for a small fee you get that extra screen real estate for the IM windows, video or social networking feeds. Although why you wouldn't use your tablet's native app for the social networking feed is another matter altogether.
The app works by connecting the two devices over IP and can only work over Wi-Fi, but should be great for those who want to watch, say, a live stream of a sporting event and still work, without tethering a huge HDMI cable to your HD TV screen.
Developed by Sharpe Services, iDisplay has already been a hit on the Apple App Store, after bringing the same functionality to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners since its launch in April last year. It doesn't appear that the ability to use the touchscreen, offered by the iOS iteration has yet made it to the Android version of the app, however.
Early reviews on the Android Market appear to suggest that there's a few bugs to iron out before it's worth splashing £3.08 on. Users are experiencing trouble connecting with 64-bit Windows 7, and also with the reliability of the connection, so we'd hope these bugs will be ironed out soon.
iDisplay will work on any device running Android 2.1 and up and is available to download now.

Apple iPad 2 release date stock shortage issues emerge Posted: 01 Mar 2011 09:04 AM PST Apple tablet to face supply issuses from launch With the second-generation Apple iPad scheduled to be officially unveiled tomorrow, Wednesday March 2nd, the tablet looks set to face a delayed launch as screen issues affect stock supplies, new reports suggest.
Word from Wall Street, more specifically industry analyst Bill Shope at Goldman Sachs, has alerted investors to the potential delay to the iPad 2 hitting stores global as Apple struggles to produce the device’s screen to high enough quantities to meet the expected high demand.
Adding a silver lining to this very cloudy prediction Shope added: "This appears to be more of a process problem as opposed to a technology problem, and we wouldn't be surprised to see volumes ramp fairly quickly as the process improves."
Shope’s talk of a thinner display fits with predictions and rumours that the iPad 2 will be unveiled sporting a thinner, flat-backed form factor alongside front and rear-mounted cameras, Apple’s FaceTime video calling technology and an improver speaker.
With just hours to go until the iPad 2 is officially unveiled, what features would you most like to see land on the second-gen tablet? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the iPad launch.

RIM to use NFC technologies in future BlackBerry devices Posted: 01 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PST BlackBerry smartphones and tablets to feature NFC Canadian tech giant Research In Motion (RIM) has revealed it intendeds to incorporate Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies into all future smartphones and tablets.
Following claims RIM chief Jim Balsillie made at Mobile World Congress last month declaring “many if not most" of the company’s 2011 products would feature NFC tech, RIM’s UK Managing Director, Stephen Bates, has spoken openly on the planned close-range wireless tech inclusion.
Simulating the technologies found in Oyster cards and contact-free bank payment cards, NFC technologies in phones will eventually, it is hoped, forgo the need for multiple chip containing products with a single smartphone acting as a central hub to your travel and payment needs.

Steve Jobs refused honorary knighthood by Gordon Brown Posted: 01 Mar 2011 06:58 AM PST Apple CEO was set to follow Bill Gates to honorary KBE Apple CEO and founder Steve Jobs was stripped of an honorary Knighthood in 2009 by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a former senior Labour MP has revealed.
The unnamed Labour MP is reported by The Daily Telegraph to have put forward Jobs for the honorary KBE only for Brown to snub the proposal in its final stages in a petty vendetta against the Apple front man who turn down an invitation to speak at an earlier Labour Party Conference, an invitation extended to him by the former PM.
On the Apple CEO who is currently on his third medically-induced leave of absence from the company since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2004, the MP added: “No other CEO has consistently shown such a commitment.”
Jobs, who would have followed bitter rival and Microsoft founder Bill Gates to the honorary KBE for service to the UK technology industry, is claimed to have missed out of the honour after being alerted to the plan by Gordon Brown, a claim that a spokeswoman for former PM has refuted.
Should Steve Jobs be awarded an honorary knighthood? Share your views on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

One of the main talking points around this year’s Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress, Honeycomb is lined up to touchdown on a number of key tablet devices in the coming months with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the 3D capable LG Optimus Pad.

Apple boss hints at cheap iPhone Posted: 01 Mar 2011 03:11 AM PST Cook was speaking with analyst about Apple's plans for the future. Apple boss Tim Cook, the man holding the reins while Steve Jobs takes sick leave, has given the biggest indication yet that the Cupertino company could be working on a cheap iPhone.
Speaking with analyst Toni Sacconaghi from Bernstein Research last week, Cook was happy to discuss Apple’s future plans. Cook said he didn’t want Apple to be seen as, “…just for the rich,” saying it, “…understood price is big factor in the prepaid market” and that it was, “…not ceding any market.”
Cook also said he and Apple were looking largely to China, where PAYG handsets dominate. It seems Apple is hungry for more global success, with this being the clearest indicator yet that a pared down iPhone could be on the cards.
Would you buy a cheap iPhone? Is Tim Cook right to say Apple products shouldn’t just be for the rich? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Penthouse launches world's first 3D adult channel Posted: 01 Mar 2011 02:57 AM PST
What better way to start March than with the announcement Penthouse is launching the world’s first pan European 3D formatted adult channel. The service, which launches today, offers full 3D native HD video, and promises to deliver 30 hours of new content every month. From the looks of their trailer on YouTube (NSFW), it looks like the technology will use passive 3D - i.e. you can watch using a pair of old school 3D glasses. Yes, we've tried. Sometimes, we do too much. "We are very excited about the launch of the Penthouse 3D channel," says Marc Bell, CEO of FriendFinder Networks. "Our goal is always to deliver the latest technology on the world's best platform." While there are various smaller 3D porn offerings available, Penthouse 3D is claiming to be the first pan-European 3D formatted adult channel. For US viewers, you’re going to have to wait till sometime in the second quarter for a roll out stateside. The porn industry have frequently been pioneers when it comes to adopting new technology – they were one of the first to throw their weight behind VCR, internet streaming technology, fee-based subscriptions, pop-up ads and electronic billing. Samsung Galaxy Tab: 8.9-inch version to launch March 22nd? Posted: 01 Mar 2011 02:31 AM PST Invite points to unveiling at CTIA in Orlando Unconvinced by the power of the Samsung Galaxy Tab? Think the newly announced Galaxy Tab 10.1 is too big and ungainly? Looks like Sammie could have the perfect solution for you, as it’s set to unveil an 8.9-inch tablet in March.
The invite pictured is for a ‘Mobile Unpacked’ event on the 22nd of this month - during CTIA in Orlando. The slogan asks: ‘What’s your Tab life?’ and shows ‘78910’ on an anonymous looking Samsung tablet device. Since there’s already 7 and 10-inch Tabs, the logical thinking is that ‘89’ refers to an 8.9-inch flavour coming soon.

Motorola 7-inch tablet launch tipped for 2011 Posted: 01 Mar 2011 02:19 AM PST Motorola tablet family set to swell with more 'fun' slate The Motorola XOOM looks set to be joined by a smaller tablet device according to comments made by Moto CEO Sanjay Jha.
Talking at the Morgan Stanley's Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Jha revealed that more tablets would join the 10.1-inch XOOM before the end of the year. While Jha did not specifically name the 7-inch device, he has previously talked up the potential of a tablet with a 7-inch form factor.
While Samsung appears to be leaving the 7-inch tablet world behind them in favour of the 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and a possible Samsung 8.9-inch tablet, the HTC Flyer would probably be considered the main rival for any smaller Moto tablet release.

Sony preps 17.7 megapixel camera phones Posted: 01 Mar 2011 02:16 AM PST But will we ever see this make its way to a mobile? Mobile maker’s seem pretty content to stick with 5 or 8 megapixel cameras these days, eschewing the tiresome sensor oneupmanship of a few years back. But once again Sony is looking to tempt handset mavens with another top-end sensor, this time packing a mind-blowing 17.7 megapixels.
The new CMOS effort has been built with mobiles in mind and can handle full resolution 120fps video, making it five times faster than older versions, according to the Big S.
Having touted at 16MP number last year, it seems unlikely we’ll be seeing a 17.7MP camera phone on these shores any time soon. But Sony is said to be looking to add this to standard compacts, meaning truly killer video on your camera could be on the way.

Gmail outage: some accounts now restored Posted: 01 Mar 2011 01:19 AM PST Just 0.02 per cent of users hit by Gmail failure says Google. Last weekend’s major Gmail outage appears to be coming to an end, with Google saying its restored access to around one third of those hit by problems. The Big G has said only around 0.02 per cent of all Gmail users couldn’t access their email.
On its Apps Status Dashboard, Google said, “Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”
It added, “Email was never lost and we’ve restored access for many of those affected. Though it may take longer than we originally expected, we're making good progress and things should be back to normal for everyone soon.”
Google has also posted to its Gmail blog, detailing the problems, saying software bugs affected several data copies. However, it’s been keen to play the whole incident down as a minor glitch.
Have you been affected by Google’s email niggles? Is your Gmail still down? Tell us all about it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PS3s impounded as Sony v LG battle ramps up Posted: 28 Feb 2011 11:58 PM PST Sony desperate to get injunction lifted as LG seeks compensation. Legal spats betweens tech’s biggest players are hardly new. But rarely do they reach such levels of acrimony as the current battle currently raging between Sony and LG. The Korean giant has won an injunction against Sony which means all PS3 imports into the UK and Europe will be confiscated over the next ten days.
The reason? LG claims Sony has infringed Blu-ray patents and is seeking compensation for every PS3 sold. With over three million consoles shifted in the UK alone, Sony could be staring down the barrel of a monstrous bill.
A court in The Hague, in the Netherlands, granted the injunction and could extend it for a further ten days if LG decides to apply more pressure to Sony. LG could even ask to have the impounded stock destroyed.
Word is that stocks of PS3s could dry up in as little as two weeks if the legal wrangling isn’t resolved. Sony is said to be trying, “frantically,” to get the ban removed. We’ll bring you any more news as we get it, so keep your eyes here and on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad supplies dry up ahead of 2 March launch Posted: 28 Feb 2011 11:40 PM PST Retailers unable to get hold of iPad stock. Apple has reportedly stopped production of the original iPad, as it ramps up for the launch of the iPad 2 tomorrow, 2 March. Word is that retailers are unable to lay their hands on stock, with all six versions unavailable.
9to5mac says shops it’s spoken with cannot get hold of any more iPads and expect to run out in the next day. For its part, Apple is still stocking the iPad in its online store, with the soon-to-be old-school edition shipping within 24 hours.
The iPad 2 is widely expected to be unveiled tomorrow, with a slimmer design, lighter frame and front-facing camera. A white iPad 2 has also been spotted doing the rounds.
