Apple iPad 2 accessories officially unveiled with iPad 2

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:20 PM PST

First iPad 2 accessories land alongside new tablet

Apple has unveiled the first accessories for the upcoming iPad 2 as the second-generation Apple tablet enters the realms of reality with a host of new features.

Announced alongside the new camera touting iPad 2, Apple revealed two key new accessories with a HDMI video out connector to be joined by the company’s heavily pushed iPad 2 Smart Cover casing.

Like the USB connector made available alongside the original iPad, Apple’s news HDMI output lead will slot neatly into the device’s docking port and come in the company’s classic white hue. As you would expect the connector allows for 1080p video content to be transferred from the device with all apps fully transferable and rotation supported, no setup required and tablet charging whilst in use as standard.

With a $39 price tag, UK pricing still waiting, the connector is by no means cheap but will undoubtedly add to the device’s high-end video credentials, set to be further boosted by the new front and rear mounted video capable cameras.

Available in polyurethane and leather forms, the Smart Cover repeatedly touted by Apple during the iPad 2 is a nifty design allowing for screen protection, an aesthetically pleasing splash of colour and a tablet stand all-in-one.

Featuring a number of magnets positioned down the case’s split-section edges, the Smart Case grips to the new iPad 2’s slim body, auto-aligning to the perfect fit and automatically putting the device into sleep mode when closed and waking it when opened. The poly cases, available in pink, orange, green blue, grey, beige and brown are priced $39 apiece with the beige, brown, black, dark blue and Product Red leather options set to cost $69 each.

Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the non-Apple-branded iPad 2 accessories that aresure to emerge in the coming days and share your thoughts of the new Smart Case and iPad 2 via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Cheap iPad: Original iPad UK price cut down to just £329

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:57 AM PST

Get one before March 25th to shave £100 off asking price

The iPad 2’s just been announced, but that hasn’t stopped Apple from trying its best to flog you the original. In the aftermath of the iPad 2 announcement, Apple has taken the liberty of shaving £100 off the asking price for the original.

At the new price, the 16GB WiFi only iPad is now £329, which is an undeniably good price. The 32GB model has dropped to £399 and the 64GB is now £479.

That's £100 off of each of model. It’s a good deal and a tidy saving on the original, but is it enough to convince you to buy an outdated iPad? Apple will certainly hope so, what with the iPad 2 not out for another 23 days.

Second-gen Apple tablet lands with white and black colour forms

Apple has officially unveiled the second-generation Apple iPad with the eagerly awaited iPad 2 confirmed to be heading for a UK release on March 25th, two weeks after it touches down in the US on March 11th.

Unveiled by Steve Jobs in San Francisco, the iPad 2 will build on the strong foundation of the original iPad which controlled more than 90 per cent of the tablet market over the past 12 months adding a feast of new features and design aspects. The iPad 2 can be seen in all its slimmed-down glory via the gallery of official iPad 2 pictures here.

Packing front and rear mounted cameras into the new slim body which measures in at a staggeringly thin 8.8mm, 0.5mm slimmer than the iPhone 4, the iPad 2 will also come ready to support Apple's FaceTime video calling technology as well as the new, faster Apple A5 1GHz dual-core processor.

The first device that will come pre-installed with the iOS 4.3 operating system, the iPad 2 will be available in both the standard black and new white colour forms and 16, 32 and 64GB storage capacities. With US prices set to start at just $499, UK pricing information has yet to be announced.

iPad 2 UK Release: Confirmed on Orange and T Mobile

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:23 AM PST

Orange and T Mobile, aka, Everything Everywhere, have confirmed they will be carrying the iPad 2 in the UK, with the iPad 2 release set for 25 March.

Orange and T Mobile were the lead operators for the first iPad and T3 has strong reason to believe that it will offer the same subsidised price plan for iPad 2.

The news that Everything Everywhere will carry the iPad 2 was confirmed by a company spokesperson, just moments after Apple unveiled the iPad 2 at a packed media event in San Francisco.

The iPad 2, which will be available in both black and white colour options, will feature a number of the widely expected hardware additions.

iPad 2 Spec

Off the bat the front and rear facing cameras that were seemingly a given are now official with a rear-mounted camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities to be joined by a VGA front-mounted offering. Also widely expected, the new iPad will support Apple’s FaceTime video calling technology that through the front-facing camera will allow users to communicate face-to-face with other iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Mac owners

Giving the iPad 2 a hefty speed boost the second-generation Apple tablet will come equipped with the all new Apple A5 processor, a 1GHz dual-core processor that will after twice the CPU power and nine times faster graphics than the original iPad whilst not adding additional drain to the device’s 10 hour battery life.

iPad 2 UK Price

Although no details of network prices have yet been released, the iPad 2 UK prices for the device only are set to remain the same as the current iPad and it's highly likely that Everything Everywhere will follow the subsidised pricing model we saw for the iPad.

Launching complete with the newly announced iOS 4.3 that will see the return of the physical rotation lock button, the iPad 2 will attempt to emulate the market dominating success of its predecessor, a success that saw the original iPad control more than 90 percent of the tablet market and caused Steve Jobs to describe other brands tablets and 2011 as the “Year of the copycats.”

Apple iPad 2 price from USD499

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:28 AM PST

Apple iPad 2 price unchanged

One of the biggest bombshells of the night has been the iPad 2 price, which is completely unchanged, according to Steve Jobs.

iPad 2 16GB Wifi models will start at $499, $629 with 3G, up to $829 for the iPad 2 64GB with 3G.

Debate has raged as to why tablet PC competitors (excepting cheap Android-powered Chinese knock-offs) have failed to undercut Apple’s iPad pricing. Is it because Apple has a direct retail strategy via Apple Stores that wholesale vendors such as Motorola and Samsung – that have to make their margin before the retailer - simply can’t match?

Some believe that it’s due to Apple’s policy of in-house design of almost everything from A4 chips to iOS4 - the big A holds all the cards, minimising licensing fees and maximising control of production.

Or is it that Apple is actually making a small loss on iPad sales, confident that the iTunes-fronted Apple ecosystem will claw back ongoing revenues – including Apple subscriptions - from each user?

Does the fixed iPad price tempt you into splashing out on the iPad2? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPad 2 launch: Charlie Sheen on the latest tablets

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 09:17 AM PST

After months of rumour, speculation and hype the Apple iPad 2 launched to the world today. Experts, pundits and Apple fan bois have all given their views on the latest announcement but the reaction everyone's really been waiting is now here. Charlie Sheen delivers his wisdom on the biggest tech news of 2011 so far.

Apple today launched the iPad 2 at a packed media event in San Francisco. The new iPad 2 was unveiled by Steve Jobs who revealed a swathe of new features in Apple's latest tablet upgrade.

Among the first to react to the news was Hollywood star Charlie Sheen. Sheen recently shot to shame in a US real-life docu-drama interview, where he revealed that everyone on the planet really wants to be him. The news initially came as a shock to the majority of the planet but since the masterpiece aired, most of Earth's inhabitants now tend to agree.

Speaking from his 'bitchin' mansion in LA where he was flanked by Colonel Gaddafi and David Hasselhof, Sheen was quick to admit the latest tablet launch from Apple was a little baffling.

"Wow. What does that mean? Basically they strapped on their diapers." Said Sheen. "I literally woke up and it was Christmas."

The iPad 2 - which now comes in white - is 33 per cent slimmer than the first iPad and features front and rear facing cameras and HDMI video out via cable. The new device is Apple's response to an avalanche of new tablet devices from tech's biggest brands.

Prices are set to stay the same and when asked what he thought the iPad 2 might mean for mere mortals around the world he said: "You've been given magic. You've been given gold."

On the new hardware upgrades announced by Steve Jobs, Sheen was a little less convinced. "Clearly he didn't bring enough gum for everyone. I've got tiger blood and Adonis DNA. I just want to hug him and rub his head."

Speaking about how he thought the iPad would cope with his latest movies, he added: "This contaminated little maggot can't handle my power. There are parts of me that are Dennis Hopper. You can't process me with a normal brain. I'm tired of pretending I'm not a total bitchin' rock star from Mars."

The news that the iPad 2 is set to come with a dual-core processor also held little sway as far as Mr Sheen was concerned: "I look at the game of baseball and I'm reminded of a quote that I wrote. It's funny how sheep rhymes with sleep."

He was also quick to refute claims that he'd been an iPad 'user': "The last time I used? What do you mean? I used my toaster this morning."

Summing up the evening's events, Sheen was commented: "I've spent close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold."

Gaddafi and Hasselhof refused to comment.

Note: T3 didn't really speak to Charlie Sheen about the iPad 2. He was too busy being 'bitchin'.

International BBC iPlayer iPad app to cost $10 per month

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 09:03 AM PST

Subscription based iPlayer app to launch this year

The international edition of the BBC iPlayer iPad app is to launch later this year with a monthly subscription fee under $10, Director General Mark Thompson has announced.

Speaking at the Financial Times Digital Media & Broadcasting conference in London today, Thompson confirmed the Beeb’s multinational catch-up service for iPad will launch “definitely this year.”

On the service’s transcontinental iPad release the Director General added the service will cost “a small number of dollars per month, definitely fewer than 10.” For this monthly subscription fee, foreign iPad users will have the same Wi-Fi connected tablet access to the full array of BBC on-demand catch-up content as British-based users.

Expanding on the international fee, Thompson said: "We're exploring internationally what the right pricing and models are... the most important thing is the consumer pricing is right." Looking to forgo the usual bastardisation of British shows in the US and avoid the seemingly standard re-branding and re-formatting.

Would you pay a monthly fee for the iPlayer iPad app here in the UK? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple online store closes ahead of Apple iPad refresh

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 08:20 AM PST

iPad 2 and white iPhone 4 heading to Apple's online store?

Apple’s Online Store has been taken down ahead of tonight’s official iPad 2 unveiling, further hinting to the immediate availability of the second-generation tablet device.

With the online store taken down globally and the usual yellow Post-It note place filler once again declaring: “We’ll be back soon. We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly,” attention now turns to what new devices will be residing in the online shopping outlet come the next virtual opening.

Whilst many are predicting that the second-gen iPad will be made available immediately after today’s announcement, the upcoming Apple press conference could well see the repeatedly delayed and long overdue white iPhone 4 enter the realms of reality and be made available for purchase.

Last official word on the lighter-hued Apple blower saw the Cupertino-based company declare a spring 2011 arrival, with today’s iPad 2 unveiled seemingly fulfilling this claimed launch date. Although the interest of some will still be piqued by the announcement of the white iPhone 4, the iPad 2 has seemingly captured the tech world with much focus resting on what features the upcoming tablet will boast.

Leaked earlier today by Amazon Germany the mooted iPad 2 is now believed to be launching with front and rear facing cameras, a 1.2GHz processor and a slimmer form factor. The leaked specs somewhat surprisingly also saw the iPad 2 touted as hosting a Thunderbolt connector for high-speed file transfers.

What products will we see in the Apple Store following today’s announcement? Make your predictions via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to all the live action at T3.com.

BlackBerry PlayBook launch set for April 10th?

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 07:21 AM PST

RIM tablet to hit stores April 10th to challenge iPad 2

With the Apple iPad 2 just hours from entering the realms of reality, RIM’s first foray in to the tablet market, the BlackBerry PlayBook, looks set to launch on April 10th, new reports suggest.

The 7-inch tablet which has been repeatedly demoed since its official unveiling last September has yet to be given a confirmed arrival time by the Canadian company but now looks set to land next month after tech blog BGR was “told by multiple sources that RIM’s very first tablet will be launching on April 10th in retail locations.”

Whilst pricing information still remains elusive the BGR report claims that the PlayBook’s new bespoke OS will foes gold master on March 31st with users being prompted to upgrade to the latest OS version direct from the box.

RIM will look to challenge Apple’s upcoming iPad 2 to for the title of the market leading tablet device through the inclusion of a 1024 x 600p 7-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The PlayBook’s powerful innards will be further bolstered by a number of connectivity options that will include Wi-Fi as well as HDMI and microUSB connection ports.

Apple's "one more thing" could be new social app

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:59 AM PST

New media sharing app to debut with iPad 2

The "one more thing" surprise at Apple launch events is legendary, bringing us iconic gadgets like the iPod touch and MacBook Air over the years. So what extra bonus does the company have in store for today's iPad 2 launch in San Francisco?

Well according to Business Insider, the "one more thing" could be a new social app that allows location, media and photo sharing application for its iOS devices.

While it won't be a direct rival to Facebook, the source suggests that it may be an embellished version of the iTunes social network Ping, or could even replace MobileMe, Apple's cloud service, which is rumoured to be going free.

The report, which references a single inside source at Apple, says: "Specifically, our source speculates that the app could have some sort of media-sharing and location-sharing features. Maybe photo sharing," explains the piece.

"It could be part of Ping, it could replace Ping, it could be part of MobileMe (which may go free), or it could be separate -- our source isn't sure. But this person says that if there is a surprise at the event, this could be it."

So is Apple taking another stab at social networking or is this just another of those endless rumours that surface on launch day before every Apple event. We'll find out at 6PM UK time when the launch event kicks off tonight.

Apple iPad 2 release date, specs and price leak online

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:22 AM PST

Amazon Germany leak iPad 2 details ahead of launch

The Apple iPad 2 has appeared online with the second-gen tablet’s release date, specification and pricing leaked just hours ahead of its official unveiling.

Responsible for the outing, Amazon Germany has once again made the slip, posting the upcoming device ahead of its formal announcement. Although having since been taken down, screen shots from the site grabbed by YourAppleDaily.net reveal the pre-emptive posting.

As expected the leak suggests the Apple iPad 2 will maintain its 9.7-inch form factor whilst adding the widely predicted camera, presumably both front and rear facing. Surprisingly, however, the listing claims the mooted iPad 2 will feature Intel’s new Thunderbolt connection, included in the recently updated MacBook Pro update that allows for high-speed file transfers.

Also touted with an improved 1.2GHz processor, we guess not dual-core, the leaked iPad 2 specs come alongside a March 17th release date and a very reasonable €499 (£423) price tag for the 16GB model.

Whilst far from confirmed, the leaked information would fit well with recent reports that the second-gen iPad will hit stores shortly after launch.

Will the iPad 2 come boasting a Thunderbolt connection? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the live iPad 2 unveiling coverage.

Apple attacks Microsoft 'App Store' trademark challenge

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 04:52 AM PST

App Store trademark battle hots up

Apple has hit back at Microsoft over the Phone 7 manufacturer’s attempts to dismiss Apple’s attempts to trademark the term “App Store”.

Looking to have taken the higher ground, Apple initially kept quiet in response to Microsoft’s attempts to disband the legally binding trademark filled on the grounds that "Apple cannot block competitors from using a generic name. 'App store' is generic and therefore in the public domain and free for all competitors to use."

It seems, however, that Apple has simply spent the last month perfecting its sharp tongued response stating Microsoft should not refute the trademark on claims of its generic term use "having itself faced a decades-long genericness challenge to its claimed Windows mark".

Microsoft filled the complaints back in January having seemingly had enough of referring to its own Windows Phone 7 app outlet as the Windows Phone 7 App Marketplace.

Keen to retain its App Store branding, Apple has gone as far as to employ “renowned linguistics expert”, Dr Robert Leonard, adding to its retort Apple added: "Microsoft should be well aware that the focus in evaluating genericness is on the mark as a whole and requires a fact-intensive assessment of the primary significance of the term to a substantial majority of the relevant public" and that "what it offers instead are out-of-context and misleading snippets of material printed by its outside counsel from the internet and allegations regarding how the public allegedly interprets the constituent parts of the term App Store, i.e., 'app' and 'store'".”

Is Apple right to retain its App Store trademark or are these school playground-esque exchanges nothing more than an unnecessary petty game of one-upmanship? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Random House titles to appear on Apple's iBooks store

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 03:36 AM PST

Random House, one of the world’s biggest publishers, has signed a deal with Apple to sell their books through the tech company’s eBook store – iBooks.

Initially, the publisher – who is owned by German media firm Bertelsmann – proved reluctant to sign up to Apple’s bookstore due to the 30 per cent cut the company insists on taking from each sale. However, renewed talks, which began in December last year according to the Wall Street Journal, have resulted in Random House making a bit of a u-turn.

The deal will mean users will have access to the publisher’s 17,000 eBooks – when these will all be uploaded and available to customers is unclear – giving Apple’s iBooks a much needed boost against Amazon’s Kindle.

The deal comes just hours before Apple is due to announce the release of the next generation iPad. Random House will join the likes of Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster and Macmillan on the iBooks store.

Apple iPad 2 release date to immediately follow unveiling

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 03:33 AM PST

Second-gen Apple tablet to hit stores within days

With the official unveiling of the Apple iPad 2 now just hours away, retailer Best Buy has reportedly deleted the original iPad from its inventory lists suggesting the second-gen tablet will hit stores immediately after it is shown off.

Screenshots of the Besy Buy stock inventory system, a system responsible for more leaks than a colander, have been obtained by MacRumors with the original, market-dominating iPad shown as ‘deleted’. The news of the deleted SKUs come on the same day, four new official looking images of the iPad 2 have leaked online.

Seemingly ending speculation that Apple would sell the original iPad at a reduced price alongside its replacement, the deletion of the first-gen Apple tablet hints towards a similar product turnaround to that of the recently unveiled MacBook Pro.

Although the Best Buy system fails to offer any further information in regards to shipment dates or even placeholder data for the upcoming iPad 2, expected to land touting dual cameras, a slimmer form factor and improved speaker, by removing the first-gen tablet from its system the retail appears to be expecting the updated gadget to land within the coming days.

Will the iPad 2 have a quick unveiling to launch turn around or will we be kept waiting a few more months yet to get our hands on the eagerly awaited tablet? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 02:10 AM PST

Sony reveals big numbers but won't get into debate about active users.

The much-maligned PlayStation Home virtual network now has 19 million users according to Sony. That colossal figure accounts for all those who’ve downloaded the service and logged on at least once.

Home boss Jack Buser said that since its inception in December 2008, the service has seen a surge in people buying virtual goodies, up 110 per cent last year, while the 230 games available has helped boost an average session to one hour and ten minutes.

PlayStation Home was seen as something of a damp squib when it first landed. And the nagging doubt that it’s a niche offering still won’t go away. Despite those 19 million downloads, Sony won’t say how many users are regularly active, claiming only devs are party to that information.

Do you use PlayStation Home? Is it as popular as Sony says? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Amazon Appstore hitting Android imminently?

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 01:00 AM PST

Snag apps for your Android phone before you get it.

Amazon’s much-hyped Appstore for Android looks set to be launching this month, if a tweet by ad network Millennial Media is to be believed.

Its missive on the social network reads, "Launching this month! Amazon Appstore for #Android-learn more here.” The ad types touted a link to an official blog, which talks up the power of Amazon’s new Appstore effort for developers, but offers nothing in the way of major new info.

The Amazon Appstore has long been in development and will apparently let you load up a phone you’ve bought from the online emporium with apps, before having it delivered to your door. Google has been happy to allow other app stores proliferate on its platform. The forthcoming PlayStation Suite is just one example.

There’s no word from Amazon yet on whether this launch date is official, so stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for news as we get it.

iPad 2: "don't get your hopes up" says Apple staffer

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 11:51 PM PST

iPad 3 is the one to get het up over says insider.

Today’s iPad 2 launch event might be getting some Steve Jobs stardust. But that aside, the iPad 2 is nothing to get excited about according to an anonymous Apple staffer.

“For the iPad 2 don’t get your hopes up too high. That’s all I’m going to say,” the insider told Cult of Mac. “They’ve had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about.”

Apparently, the iPad 3 remains on track for release later this year, but today’s bash will focus mainly on a much-mooted update to MobileMe. Word is Apple’s cloud offering will become a digital locker for movies and videos bought from iTunes, with the source backing up previous claims about changes to the service.

As for the iPad 2, it’ll have a better speaker, new cameras and a thinner, lighter design said the staffer, reiterating gossip that’s been swirling round the web for weeks.

We’ll be covering the iPad 2 launch event live, so stay tuned for all the news from San Francisco as it happens.

iPad 2 launch: Steve Jobs to take the stage?

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 11:33 PM PST

Sources claim Jobs will make an appearance at today's iPad 2 event.

The unveiling of the iPad 2 has already got Apple fanboys in a tizzy. But they’ll be positively buzzing at gossip that Steve Jobs is set to take the stage in San Francisco later today and take some part in the sequel slate’s reveal.

Italian site Setteb.it claims that, “…information [it’s] gathered,” suggests Jobs will be at the Yerba Buena Center at 6pm UK time. Furthermore, the always spot on Kara Swisher of All Things D also reckons Jobs is, “…definitely considering,” showing his face,

Swisher intimates that it’s very much 50:50 at this stage, with Jobs still on medical leave, reportedly being treated for cancer. If he does show up, expect the hall to go completely bonkers, with plenty of questionable whooping and hollering.

We’ll be bringing you live coverage of the iPad 2 launch event, so stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more.
