News@8pm: Apple iPad 2 release and GarageBand app

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple iPad 2 is undoubtedly the big talking point today following the device's official unveiling yesterday. With the device now out in the open Apple has released the full video of the launch event featuring a returning Steve Jobs whilst network provider O2 has announced it will not offer subsidised iPad 2 tablets in the UK despite rivals T-Mobile and Orange announcing they will.

Emerging app news with us today poses exciting possibilities for users of most key platforms. Whilst we take a closer look at the iMovie and GargeBand apps unveiled to launch alongside the second-generation iPad, reports suggest that RIM is to make the BlackBerry Messenger service available to Android and iOS handset users via a series of upcoming app releases.

General tech updates today saw new that following last months bricking issues, Microsoft has resumed downloads of the Windows Phone 7 update for users of the Samsung Omnia 7 handset. Elsewhere iPad 2 rival the Motorola Xoom has been made available for pre order in the UK with a near Apple tablet challenging £499 price tag.

Apple's non iPad news is still a top player with the Cupertino company making waves away from the newly announced iPad 2, well, sort of. Whilst it is confirmed that the new iPad 2 HDMI connector will also be compatible with your iPhone and iPod Touch devices, Apple saw its stock prices rise just minutes after Steve Jobs appeared on stage at the iPad 2 unveiling. See out hands-on video review of the iPad 2 below.

BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:55 AM PST

BBM to go cross-brand with new Messenger apps

The hugely popular BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) is to be rolled out as Android and iOS compatible applications, new reports suggest.

Allowing BlackBerry users to send typed messages to each other completely free of charge, tech blog BGR has revealed “Research In Motion is planning to bring its beloved BlackBerry Messenger app and service to Android, and eventually to iOS as well.” Launch date and pricing information for the cross-platform BBM is still awaited.

The claimed sources reportedly informed BGR that: “RIM has not yet finalized details surrounding timing or pricing” They add: “We have heard that the company might make the software free to all users. We’re also told strategy is still being developed, however, and RIM may end up charging users a one-time fee or even a recurring fee for access to its BBM service on third-party platforms."

With the Apple app due to follow the reportedly imminent Android offering due to the easier to develop open platform the BGR report goes on to conclude: “Right now, we have heard that Android is definitely a go. But again, we’re not sure on timing, though our sources are confident that it will launch some time this year. RIM chose Android first because of the fact that it could develop and integrate something like this much easier with an open platform, but the plan is to build and deploy an iOS version at some point as well,”

Will Google and especially Apple really allow BlackBerry to port its popular service to their devices? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Charlie Sheen becomes fastest to 1m Twitter followers

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:17 AM PST

Twitter Guinness World Record set by Charlie Sheen

Actor Charlie Sheen has become the fastest Twitter user to reach 1 million followers with the Two and a Half Men star reaching the milestone in a little over a day.

Sheen, who has been making media headlines of late thanks to a series of bizarre comments and erratic behaviour, clocked up 1 million Twitter followers in just 25 hours and 17 minutes after adopting the Twitter handle @CharlieSheen, earning himself a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Flocking to his virtual, micro-blogging side, more than 1 million Twitter users have signed up to follow Sheen in a hope of hearing more about the tiger blood he claims runs through his veins, find out if he really is a man from Mars and discover where exactly he gets that drug he’s on called Charlie Sheen.

Sheen, who as we write this has more than 1.23 million Twitter followers, declares himself on the social outlet as an “unemployed winner” adds to his profile: “Born Small... Now Huge... Winning... Bring it..!” Having acquired the Twitter handle @CharlieSheen from a so called “squatter” the real Sheen is reported to have taken Twitter lessons and advice from celebrity Twitter endorsers Ad.ly before embarking on his micro-blogging ranting adventure.

Apple iPad 2 release will not see O2 subsidised contracts

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:36 AM PST

Second-gen Apple tablet will not hit O2

Leading UK mobile network provider O2 has revealed it will not offer the recently unveiled Apple iPad 2 on subsidised contracts.

Unlike Everything Everywhere partners Orange and T-Mobile, both of which confirmed they would subsidise the dual camera, dual-core processor touting tablets when they hit the UK on March 25th, O2 has stated that it will follow its current iPad plans and only offer data packages for the device.

Speaking on the second-generation Apple tablet an O2 spokesman reportedly declared: ‘We continue to offer great value, flexible data tariffs for iPad 2 and the unique ability to manage these tariffs on the device itself.” He added: “Although we will not be selling iPad 2 with subsidy, O2 microsims, with our great value iPad tariffs, are still available for customers who have purchased the device elsewhere.”

The spokesman went on to add: ‘In addition to our award winning mobile broadband service, customers also benefit from unlimited Wi-Fi at thousands of The Cloud and BT Openzone hotspots.”

The final of the UK’s big five networks, Vodafone and Three, have both yet to release their plans for the iPad 2 which was officially unveiled by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in San Francisco yesterday sporting a new, slimmer, lighter form factor and a choice of black or white colour schemes.

Will you be rushing out to buy the iPad 2 when it touches down in the UK on March 25th? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPad 2 apps: iMovie and GarageBand on launch

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:26 AM PST

The iPad living up to its billing as a "post PC" device.

So the iPad 2 is thinner, lighter, whiter and more powerful, but perhaps a more more groundbreaking announcement from yesterday's launch event was the impending arrival of two of Apple's most powerful applications in tablet form.

Yes, Apple's excellent beginners' video editing software iMovie has made the transition from it's brilliant iPhone 4 iteration to arrive on the iPad, and will be joined by Mac's legendary music creation tool GarageBand.

iMovie brings full screen HD video editing to your iPad 2. Features will include a precision editor which allows you to perfectly tailor the video clips using the touchscreen, a multi-track audio editor which means you can bring in tracks from your iTunes library. There'll also be 50 new sound effects and a range of new themes.

The new HDMI adapter will mean you'll be able to play back your movies in HD on your TV set, while the app enables budding videographers to share their work with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and CNN's iReport citizen journalist type channel. Video podcasters can also send it to iTunes.

iPhone 4 and first gen iPad owners fear not, the update is universal and will come to all platforms on March 11th, although it remains unclear whether UK fans will have to wait until the 25th.

The other big hitter was, of course, GarageBand. The wow feature here has to be the on-screen piano which not only allows you to play in all octaves and scales, but is now sensitive to your touch. If you press harder or softer on the keys the output will be different, you know, like an actual piano.

There's also drum kits, drum machines, guitars and synthesisers to to assist you with creating your masterpiece on the 8-track recording tool. They're called "smart instruments" because, according to Apple you don't need to be a musician to play them. If you want to refine your project you can send it to your Mac and continue editing. Very cool.

The apps will cost $4.99, which will probably translate to around £2.99 in Olde English pounds, will be available on launch day, which is March 11th in the US and March 25th in 26 other countries, including the UK. Less than the price of a pint for these tremendously powerful apps? That represents great value from Apple.

Rupert Murdoch given BSkyB takeover go-ahead

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:13 AM PST

Murdoch to up his 39 per cent share in BSkyB

Rupert Murdoch’s attempts to buy the remaining stake of BSkyB have been bolstered by a recent government decision that has given the green light to News Corps’ latest proposal.

Having ended concerns that a full BSkyB takeover would give News Corp too large a stake in the British Media, Murdoch’s company has been given the go ahead by the British Government after it proposed to split Sky News from the BSkyB package to run as a separate, independent company.

Murdoch who currently owns 39 per cent of BSkyB is reportedly planning on buy the remaining 61 per cent of the company at a predicted 850 pence per share in a buyout totalling £9.1 billion. The buyout has stoked much debate over media control with News Corp currently owning The Sun, The News of the World, The Times and The Sunday Times in the UK.

Speaking on the proposed deal Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt was keen to stress the government had cleared the plans in a just, fair manner. He stated the government are:  "very, very conscious that people are suspicious of politicians' motives," adding "Ofcom assured me that News Corp's undertaking addressed its concerns about media plurality."

With current shareholders in Sky News to retain their stake in the company Hunt went on to stress: "The undertakings offered would ensure that shareholdings in Sky News would remain unchanged, and indeed offer it more independence from New Corporation than it currently has.”

Will Murdoch’s entire ownership of BSkyB along with his hefty media portfolio prove damaging to the British media? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows Phone 7 software updates resume for Samsung

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 03:56 AM PST

Samsung Omnia 7 to receive fixed Phone 7 patch

Microsoft has resumed the rollout of Windows Phone 7 updates to Samsung-branded handsets after reports the software upgrade was bricking devices.

The software patch that was made available to Phone 7 users last month, bringing with it a host of new features including copy and paste possibilities, was reported by a number of users to be transforming the Samsung Omnia 7 into an unusable, bricked device with updates stalling.

Speaking via the company’s official blog, Microsoft’s Michael Stroh announced of the update issues: "During the past week the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch."

Whilst we wouldn’t necessarily refer to the 10 per cent of users believed to have faced issues with the update as small, the swift turn around by Microsoft is encouraging and will no doubt appease the Omnia 7 owners who have faced a prolonged wait for the Phone 7 software upgrade.

Did you face issues trying to download the first Windows Phone 7 software patch? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple stocks soar as Steve Jobs returns to company

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 03:24 AM PST

Apple CEO makes iPad 2 announcement despite being on medical leave

Apple stock prices rose dramatically yesterday in the moments after Steve Jobs made a shock appearance on the San Francisco stage to unveil the iPad 2.

With stock prices having dropped significantly since the Apple CEO announced back in January he was to take his third medical leave of absence from the company since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, share prices rallied within minutes of the turtleneck wearing front man appearing on stage.

Making an appearance to officially unveil the eagerly awaited Apple iPad 2, Jobs announced: “We’ve been working on this product for a while and I didn’t want to miss today.”

Within just six minutes of Jobs’ face popping up on the Apple stage, shares in the company rose from $350.40 a share to $353.60 a pop before rising steadily throughout the hour-long conference to peak at $354.23 on the news the iPad 2 will hit US stores next Friday, March 11th.

As well as bolstering stock prices, Jobs appearance at the iPad 2 unveiling will no doubt appease shareholders who last week lambasted Apple for failing to unveil plans for Jobs’ successor should the talismanic CEO not be fit to fully resume his role within the company.

After months of anticipation, speculation and endless rumours, the Apple iPad 2, shown in our hands-on video below, was officially revealed touting the widely expected front and rear mounted cameras along with Apple FaceTime video calling technology. Joining the new snappers on the slimmed down, lighter iPad will be a speedy 1GHz dual-core processor and the option of a new lighter-hued, white model. The iPad 2 will be available for purchase in the UK on March 25th.

Will the Apple iPad 2 be the dominant force in the tablet market that its predeccesor proved to be? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC ChaCha now ChaChaCha in Spain

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST

Facebook phone renamed in Spain.

The HTC ChaCha is arguably the most ludicrously monikered mobile of all time. And now it’s comes with even more mirth attached thanks to being renamed the HTC ChaChaCha over in Spain.

The reason? ChaCha is something of an insult in Spanish. The new name conjures up fast-footed dance move rather than a phone with a dedicated button for the world’s biggest social network.

It comes off the back of mobile search engine ChaCha suing HTC over the name. Clearly the Taiwanese tech titan wasn’t clued up about what this title meant before unleashing the phone at MWC.

Apple HDMI adapter: iPhone 4, iPod touch and original iPad supported

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 01:01 AM PST

New adapter touted at iPad 2 launch event works across iOS range.

Apple’s new HDMI adapter will work across all current iOS devices and not just the iPad 2. That means you’ll be able to fire off HD clips to your TV if you stump up for the add-on.

The iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th gen and iPad can all handle the HDMI connector, officially dubbed the Apple Digital AV Adapter. It’ s set to cost $39 across the pond, although UK price is currently MIA.

The Apple Digital AV Adapter was unveiled alongside the iPad 2 last night. The new slate comes in white or black and crams in the latest iOS 4.3 software, along with a slimmer, lighter frame and dual cameras for FaceTime action.

Is this HDMI extra enough to tempt you to buy an iPad 2? Or would you rather HDMI was built right in? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 2: watch the launch event in full

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PST

Apple sticks full 70 minute video up on its official site.

Still not got enough of the iPad 2? Want to see the second-gen slate revealed all over again? Then Apple has just the thing for you. It’s slapped a video of the entire launch event up on its site, so you can see Steve Jobs take to the stage and tell the world all about his new tablet.

For those at the back, the iPad 2 is thinner than the original, measuring an iPhone 4-beating 8.8mm, rocks a 1GHz dual-core processor, dual cameras for using FaceTime, as well as recording 720p HD video and comes in white or black. It tips the scales at just 589g.

The updated iPad is due to hit UK shelves on 25 March, two weeks after it goes on sale Stateside. Orange and T-Mobile are both set to sell it on contract.

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi model now £499

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:44 PM PST

Leaked price goes up as cost of original iPad slides.

All set to bust out your credit card and pay £449 for a Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom? Well, we’ve got some bad news. PC World has just stuck the Android Honeycomb slate back on its online store, having been forced to take down the initial pricing. The new cost? A mind-boggling £499.

While punters were unable to pre-order the device at the lower price point, it still represents a bum move by both Motorola and PC World. That hefty tag is made to look even worse with the original iPad now available for just £329 ahead of the iPad 2’s arrival on 11 March.

Chuck in a lack of Adobe Flash at the start and it seems Moto is doing all it can to hamstring its slate before it hits shelves. Here’s hoping the 3G version turns up on some seriously good contracts, otherwise this could well be an Android slate that prices itself out of the market.
