Gates and Zuckerberg top list of history's world changers Posted: 04 Mar 2011 07:27 AM PST Tech leaders deemed more influential than histories leaders Tech personalities Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have topped a list of history’s most influential “world changers” beating the likes of Martin Luther King Jr and Charles Darwin.
The study, carried out by Electronic Arts on 1,000 UK residents under 25 to celebrate the launch of Dragon Age 2, a game that allows users to make virtual world changing decisions, saw the I have a Dream speech giver round out the top three behind the Facebook founder in second and Microsoft founder who took the top spot.
On the findings Sophie Orlando of Electronic Arts said: “The results of this survey are surprising given how influential some of the figures on this list are and the impact that their inventions or discoveries have had on our lives."
She added: "However, the growth of social networks such as Facebook has been phenomenal – to the point where young Brits consider it to be more important than the invention of the more practical light bulb!”

Twitter for iPhone and iPad updated Posted: 04 Mar 2011 07:09 AM PST New app makes it easier to post links and photos. Twitter has tweaked its tweeting tool for top tweeters on iPhones and iPads.
Making life a damn sight easier than it is to say that intro five times, the new application for iOS simplifies the photo uploading process, while also making it easier to create links and access location-based information.
Borrowing from some of the features brought to the recently upgraded Android app, the new iOS app serves up the @ button on the toolbar that brings up all of the people that you follow. Also, if you start typing the name of one of your followers it will serve up autocomplete options.
Adding Twitpics is also a breeze, with a camera icon also added to the toolbar. You can now snap pictures from directly within the app using the iPhone's camera. If you're not happy with the image preview, you could take another or select a picture from your gallery.
There's also the option to tag the location of your tweet and, by pressing the location button in your toolbar, check out what is trending in your current locale.
Another improvement makes it easier to share links with your followers by automatically creating a short url when you paste the link into the text box.
All in all it's a pretty nifty free update which brings the app up to speed with its Android counterpart and then adds a little bit more into the mix. It's available to download from the App Store now.

Facebook confirm half of UK population now signed up Posted: 04 Mar 2011 03:24 AM PST Facebook confirm 30 million UK users Social networking giant Facebook is now used by more than half of the UK’s population, the blue-hued internet leader has revealed.
Speaking at a London-based media conference earlier this week, Vice President of Facebook Europe, Joanna Shields, said: “We can announce to day that we have reached 30 million in the UK, which we are really excited about.”
Attending the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference, Shields revealed the new Facebook UK landmark whilst stating the average Facebook user has 130 friends and shares links to media sites with these friends on a regular basis. She said: "Media companies which take advantage of that are really seeing the benefits.”
A recent study found that the average user generates 90 pieces of unique content per month, with half of the Facebook following logging on to the site every day. In a typical month the global Facebook community will log a reported 700 billion minutes of time on the social media outlet, a figure that would take a single individual 1.3 million years to accumulate.
How often do you use Facebook, daily, weekly, monthly or an addictive hourly? Let us know via T3’s very own Facebook page or if you are more of a Twitter fan join us on the T3 Twitter feed too.

PlayStation Store spending soars Posted: 04 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST Figures show PS owners spending like there's no tomorrow. The PlayStation Store had something of a bumper year in 2010, according to Sony America’s Pierre Gravereau. The virtual emporium’s takings were up 70 per cent in 2010 according to the exec, who has was speaking at this year’s Game Developers Conference.
Why the surge? Well PSN accounts now sit at 70 million, with 60 per cent more people looking around the PlayStation Store in 2010 compared to 2009. Gravereau says 80 per cent of PlayStation owners are now connected to the web.
Sadly, Gravereau didn’t actually hand over any precise figures, instead relying on percentage points to make his case. Still, it shows that the PS3 is managing to keep up the pace with Xbox Live.

Nintendo-built Wii 3D concept works without glasses Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:37 AM PST ...But you won't be getting one anytime soon We’re all wondering where Nintendo will go with its next home games console, but new info suggests that if it’s 3D you want, the gaming giant’s already got the ball rolling. The company apparently made a concept Wii 3D – which didn’t require 3D glasses – to prove to insiders that the 3DS could work.
It’s unclear as to whether Nintendo will eventually bring this tech to the Wii 2, but it’s good to know that they could. Presumably, it must depend on how 3D TV sales go, and which kind of 3D tech people take a liking to. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
No Microsoft Windows tablets until summer 2012 Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:35 AM PST Windows 8-packing slates not out until later next year. Microsoft won’t release a full-on iPad rival until the summer 2012, according to insiders speaking with Business Week. Recent rumours have suggested that a Microsoft slate will use Windows 8 rather than a beefed up version of Windows Phone 7.
The, “…people with knowledge of the plans,” said testing on a Microsoft tablet would start later this year. A release would tie in with recent chatter surrounding a Dell Windows 8 tablet, which was spied on a leaked roadmap from the PC maker.
Such a delay would doubtless harm Microsoft in its attempts to show it has what it takes in the tablet space. By summer next year, the iPad will have been around for over two years, while Android tablets will be even more advanced than the current Google offerings.
Is Microsoft making a huge mistake in not looking to rush out a tablet? Should it use Windows Phone 7 instead of Windows 8? Let us know what you think via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Motorola Xoom 3G pre-orders kick off Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:00 AM PST Mobile network-enabled zoom £100 more than Wi-Fi only model. With PC World firing the starting gun on Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi pre-orders yesterday, Carphone Warehouse has now followed its retail rival with the Motorola Xoom 3G. The SIM-free slate will cost £599.99. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: T3 Tech Videos
Carphone and Best Buy have first dibs on the Motorola Xoom 3G, so they’re the only places you can lay your hands on one for now. If you put down your cash now though, be aware you’ll need to wait until the start of April before it ships.
The Motorola Xoom comes without Flash across the pond, where it’s just been released, although by the time it hits these shores, an update should mean Adobe-backed video works a treat on the Android Honeycomb tablet.

Sony NGP to get 2GB and 4GB storage cards Posted: 04 Mar 2011 01:23 AM PST How a UMD-free existence will play out for the NGP Sony has detailed storage plans for the NGP (PSP 2) when it launches (we hope) in at least one territory before the end of the year.
- Sony NGP pictures: Official images of the PSP 2
In a presentation given at the Games Developer Conference (GDC), Sony revealed that there will be 2GB and 4GB storage cards of varying sizes with 5-10% to be dedicated to save game files and downloadable patches.
For game developers that means there will be around 1.8GB of space on the 2GB cards and 3.6GB on the 4GB variety.
Sony also pointed out that these storage options allow significantly more data than the average 10MB mobile phone game.
At the official unveiling of the NGP, Sony opted to ditch the UMD on the PSP Go for flash memory cards hoping to lead to higher capacity to store additional content and game save data.
Sony expects to launch the NGP in 2011, but there has been no confirmation if that will be a global release. We sincerely hope it is...

PlayStation Move.me: Sony allows controller hacks Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:44 AM PST Sony move follows Microsoft's plans for a Kinect SDK. Sony has just pulled the wrappers off a new development project, PlayStation Move.me, with the aim of letting devs create killer official apps for the PS3 and PC using the best-selling motion controller.
Sony says its new project isn’t just limited to games, as it looks to actively embrace those who want to try and use its Move controller for more than just playing virtual sports and shooting bad guys.
On Move.me’s official site, Sony said, “Move.me is designed for academic researchers, university instructors, college students, programming hobbyists, and HCI developers. Show us how you can take the PS Move beyond traditional gaming.”
The Big S then lists areas its keen to see Move move into, including music, sports physiology and even education. Its plans follow Microsoft’s recent move to bring onside Kinect hackers with a Kinect for Windows SDK.
PlayStation Move.me will be available to download soon, according to Sony. Tell us what you want to see from the tweaked controller over on our Facebook and Twitter pages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sony Playstation Move VS Xbox Kinect video
