Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 launch unaffected by iPad 2

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 04:13 AM PST

Shipping plans for Galaxy Tab 10.1 unchanged, but will the iPad 2 drag down the launch price?

In spite of some troubling rumblings out of Samsung HQ in the wake of the iPad 2 on Friday, Samsung are reportedly not sticking the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 on a crash diet to take on Apple's new "dramatically thin" iOS tablet.

The rumours that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was to go under the knife for some last minute fat-trimming was stirred by a quote allegedly from Lee Don-Joo, the executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division. Speaking on the Galaxy Tab 10.1's ability to compete with the iPad 2, Don-Joo said: "We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate... Apple made [the iPad 2] very thin."

Samsung's follow-up to the less-than-inspired Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, made its debut at MWC in February, measuring in at a mere 10.9mm thick. However, while Samsung were focussing on cramming in an 8MP camera, Apple were shaving off every last millimetre of bulk that they could, with its iPad 2 measuring in at just 8.8mm. Critically, Jobs and Co. are also promising to keep the pricing of the latest iPad steady at £439 for the cheapest, WiFi-only model - a price point other tablet producers so far are struggling to undercut.

However, according to Samsung spokespeople, the plans for shipping the Galaxy Tab 10.1 remain unchanged, although no release date has yet been unveiled. But will Sammy's shaken confidence result in a discounted, iPad-beating price tag? We wait with crossed fingers.

Angry Birds hits 30 million Android downloads

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 03:28 AM PST

Mobile gaming's flagship puzzler hits 30 million milestone at GDC.

It was the game that launched a thousand knock-offs: Angry Birds, the smartphone physics puzzler in which the titular aggrieved avians are slingshotted into rickety buildings full of pigs (they stole the eggs, see?) has another record to stash in the Rovio trophy cabinet.

According to Rovio CEO and Angry Birds mastermind Peter Vesterbacka, the ad-supported free release of Angry Birds on Android has pipped the thirty million download mark. Furthermore, Vesterbacka revealed during his speech at this year's Game Developers Conference that 80% of people who downloaded the game come back for more, downloading Angry Birds updates to keep the avian-lobbing experience fresh.

The game has been available for a while on Android, Nokia, iPhone and iPad, and Vesterbacka has hinted in the past that the Rovio team is looking to expand the Angry Birds experience to social networking sites like Facebook in the future.

Mozilla web app store now open to developers

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 03:18 AM PST

Mozilla steps up the fight with Chrome with its own web app store.

The battle of the browsers between Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox has returned to a more even footing, with Mozilla announcing its own upcoming database of Firefox-based apps in answer to Google's Chrome Web App Store is now open for business (for developers, at least).

Apps from the Mozilla Web App store will allow users to launch smartphone-style apps with a single click or a couple of keystrokes on their desktops. Details are pretty sketchy at the moment, but Mozilla have released a promotional video for interested developers, describing how devs can start writing apps and developing storefronts to sell them through.

The video also includes a teaser of the kinds of apps users can expect from Mozilla's Web App Store. Apps like an address book will be able to interface with websites, letting users share information instantly , and users will be able to create desktop widgets for their favourite sites that constantly update. Some apps from the store will also be transferable to smartphones, according to the video.

There's no word on when the Mozilla Web App Store will finally be ready for the public, but early bird developers can at least now start crafting apps and building storefronts through which to sell them. For a closer look at what Mozilla have been up to, take a peek at the video below.

Tech Week: Apple iPad 2 unveiled and Steve Jobs back

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
Like this week’s top news event could be anything other than the Apple iPad 2. Before the launch event had even kicked off we were inundated with iPad 2 coverage as rumours and speculation grew. As some rather official looking iPad 2 pictures leaked online, retailers and networks reported stock shortages for the original iPad, hinting towards an imminent iPad 2 arrival. Adding fuel to the iPad 2 speculation fire a photograph of a white iPad 2 front emerged creating a storm of rumours around a lighter-hued tablet incoming.

Also ahead of the iPad 2 unveiling there was a flurry of Apple staff stories kicking off with rumours head designer Jonathan Ive is planning on leaving Apple for a return to the UK. This was followed in mixed fashion with news that Steve Jobs had been refused a honorary knighthood by Gordon Brown but might make a surprise appearance at the iPad 2 launch to unveil the tablet.

Fulfilling such rumours Jobs appeared on stage in San Francisco to officially unveil the Apple iPad 2. Set for a UK launch on March 25th following a March 11th US arrival priced $499 the iPad 2 will land with dual cameras, a dual-core processor and a slimmer, lighter form factor. Launching alongside the iPad 2 were a number of iPad 2 accessories. Whilst Orange and T-Mobile confirmed they would sell subsidised iPad 2s, O2 announced they would not and Apple cut the price of the original iPad by £100.

Away from Apple and mobile stories were the talk of the week as the world’s first dual-core smartphone, the LG Optimus 2X was confirmed for a March UK launch as fellow dual-core blower, the Samsung Galaxy S II has made available for pre-order with a £599 price tag and May launch date. Elsewhere RIM declared most future BlackBerry handsets would launch with NFC technologies built in as standard.

13% of UK Xbox gamers spend £100+ per month on Live

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 05:04 AM PST

Microsoft survey reveals spending habits of Xbox's online gaming fraternity.

A survey conducted by Microsoft has revealed that UK gamers who play using Xbox Live spend an average of £64 per month on gaming, with a hardcore 13% splashing out over £100 per month on their gaming and purchases from the Xbox Marketplace.

According to the survey, published on MCV, the average member of the UK's Xbox gaming community also plays seven different games per month and plays three to four times per week, with 41% gaming for between three and four hours per session.

The survey, in which 251 UK Xbox gamers between 25 and 34 were quizzed by Microsoft, also unsurprisingly revealed that shooters like Call of Duty make up the bulk of online Xbox gaming, followed by racing games and RPGs.

According to Julie Forey, Microsoft Advertising's head of research for data and analytics, the results of the survey show that gamers "represent an attractive proposition for marketers" looking to cash in on Xbox's captive audience - could this be the first step toward a free, ad-supported Xbox Live? Yays and nays to the T3 inbox or Twitter feed, if you please.

HTC Wildfire S, Desire S and ChaCha coming to Three

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 04:05 AM PST

HTC's stream of MWC mobiles get UK release months on Three.

The MWC-debuted HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire S and the Facebook-centric HTC ChaCha have all appeared on Three's online store with the tag "coming soon".

The Desire S, the follow-up to T3's Phone of the Year at last year's T3 Awards, the HTC Desire, is pegged for an April release date, alongside the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and the Xperia Play (read: PlayStation Phone). The Wildfire S follows in May along with the Samsung Galaxy S2, and finally the HTC ChaCha will arrive in June (alongside the LG Optimus 3D).

Unsubsidised, the HTC Desire S will set you back £420-ish, and will be available unlocked from late March, with the Wildfire S coming in at a more wallet-friendly £270. Check out our hands-on video of the Desire S from MWC below.

BlackBerry PlayBook coming April 10th?

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 03:16 AM PST

BlackBerry PlayBook release date just a month after the iPad 2?

With tech's big names clamouring to get the second generation of tablets into the shops post-MWC, RIM are reportedly gearing up for the launch of their own tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, in a bid to steal some lucrative market share from Jobs and Co.

According to an exclusive news post, the good people over at BGR.com claim that they have been "told by multiple sources that RIM's first tablet will be launching on April 10th", which puts the release date of BlackBerry's own claim to tablet fame just a month after that of the iPad 2 in the States.

We went hands-on with the Berry PlayBook back at CES in January, and came over all funny for its slick interface and feather-light 408g weight. However, since January a lot of the features we were so excited about on the PlayBook have become the tablet norm in the wake of MWC. An iPad competitor it may have been back in January, but is the PlayBook turning up to late to the party? Let us know what you think, as always, via e-mail or on the T3 Twitter feed.

App week: iMovie and GarageBand for iPad 2

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

iMovie and GarageBand enter the tablet realm
Let's start with the biggest news of the week. The new apps for the iPad 2 almost upstaged the new tablet itself. iMovie moves over from iPhone, bringing full-screen, fingertip, 720p HD video editing to your new device. GarageBand serves up the legendary Mac music creation tool with on-screen instruments that response to the sensitivity of your touch. The apps will arrive with the iPad 2 on March 11th, stateside.

BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS
Strange one this. On one hand, BBM is an incredibly popular IM service that keeps millions of RIM users in touch, but if it stops being BlackBerry exclusive, will users continue to buy RIM devices if they can get their BBM fix on more attractive Android and iOS platforms? Reports on the port are yet to be confirmed, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

BBC iPlayer international app priced
Ex-pats rejoice! The long-awaited international edition of the iPlayer is coming this year and it won't break the bank. The app will cost less than $10 USD a month and for that you'll also be able to access the app on your iPad as well as your laptop. This is great news, unless you'

Twitter gets an iOS refresh

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Photoshop Express comes to Android
Historically, Android cameras aren't the finest aspect of Google phones, so it's great to see the world's favourite tinkering software arrive on the platform. According to our five star review Photoshop "can seriously perk up even the worst photos, giving oomph to the most lacklustre of images." Download it.

F**k My Life comes to WP7
Is there anything that brightens a dreary day like reading about someone else's misfortune? Now you can do it on your Windows Phone 7 handset with the ingenious FML application. We're sure you've all visited the site, but if not, this is the type of content you can expect: "Today is my birthday. I woke up to a text message from my boyfriend, breaking up with me. When I commented on his impeccably bad timing, he admitted he'd forgotten it was my birthday. FML." See, there's always someone worse off than you.

Rugby Kicks
Its Six Nations season and England are whooping some Welsh and French ass so what better time to get some kicking practice in on your Samsung Bada handset? Using this app, you can make Johnny Wilkinson look like an amateur. Samsung Bada is going great guns on the gaming front at the moment. Now, surely it's time for Samsung to give the OS a little more love.
