News@8pm: iPhone 5 specs leak and Nintendo Wii 2 details Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Apple's iPhone 5 has taken over the fruity tech rumour mill now that the iPad 2 has entered the realms of reality and is on its way to a March 25th UK arrival. Today saw two doozies of iPhone 5 rumours with the mooted Apple handset reported as hosting a metal back with the antenna built in to the Apple logo and another suggesting the iPhone 5 will launch featuring the same A5 dual-core processor as the iPad 2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gaming fact and fiction keeps us excited about the possible and the definite as on the confirmed front, Rovio declared Angry Birds will launch a Facebook game next month. On a more speculative basis, Nintendo is rumoured to be preparing the Wii 2 for unveiling in June at the E3 convention in Los Angeles.
App news surprises as in a bizarre move, Apple has declared that the Opera browser app is only suitable for users over 17 years old. Whilst the reasoning behind this is a little sketchy, We7 has released a new music streaming app for Android that allows users to take their music offline.
There's no escaping Apple's iPad at the moment be it the market dominating first rendition or the eagerly awaited second-generation. We have news on both models today as whilst Carphone Warehouse slash the price of the original iPad ahead of the upcoming launch, iOS 4.3, the OS set to launch with the iPad 2 has seen its personal hotspot for iPhone feature restricted to the Three network in the UK. Carphone Warehouse slash price of original Apple iPad Posted: 07 Mar 2011 09:00 AM PST Retailer offering iPad at Apple competitive pricing Highstreet retailer Carphone Warehouse has slashed the prices of the original-generation Apple iPad bringing the tablet in line with the Apple UK store prices.
With Apple dropping the prices of first series of iPads shortly after the unveiling of the Apple iPad 2 last week, Carphone Warehouse has followed suit with the third party retailer now offering the market leading tablet from as little as £329.
The £499 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G iPad sees potential buyers get the same storage levels and connectivity options as the upcoming base model for the Motorola Xoom, but £100 cheaper. Whilst the Xoom features a more impressive spec sheet than the original iPad, one that touts a dual-core processor and dual cameras, the imminent iPad 2 arrival will see the Apple tablet once again take charge with a 1GHz A5 dual-core processor, front and rear facing cameras and a new, ultra slim, lightweight form factor.
Are you tempted by the cut-price iPads or are you holding on for the imminent iPad 2 arrival? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and check out our hands-on video with the iPad 2 below.

iPhone 5 release date to see dual core processor inclusion Posted: 07 Mar 2011 08:24 AM PST iPhone 5 to use same A5 dual-core processor as iPad 2 As the eagerly awaited Apple iPad 2 enters the realms of reality ahead of its March 25th UK release, attention now turns to the upcoming iPhone 5 and its likely use of the A5 dual-core processor currently found residing in the second-gen tablet.
With the ARM A5 dual-core processor chip rumoured to be heading to the iPhone 5 in June or July, The Economic Daily News, a Chinese publication responsible for numerous Apple leaks, has declared, in a broken English translation courtesy of Makotakara that: "There is no doubt [the iPhone 5 is] to be implemented [with the] multi-processor A5 in iPad2."
Whilst the mooted iPhone 5 has already been rumoured to host a new, slimmer form factor and NFC wireless payment technologies, the inclusion of the A5 dual-core processor would see the Apple branded handset line-up against the new fleet of dual-core smartphones that kicked off with the LG Optimus 2X and has since been joined by the hugely impressive Samsung Galaxy S II.
As with virtually all things Apple, the iPhone 5 inclusion of the A5 dual-core processor is still just speculation and rumour.
Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the Apple iPhone 5 and exclusive analysts’ opinions on the handsets potential A5 inclusion. Until then take a look at the A5 processor in use in our hands-on video review of the iPad 2.

Nintendo Wii 2 to be unveiled this June at E3 Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:40 AM PST Upcoming Wii 2 unveiling to see in-built projector confirmed With the UK release of the 3DS now just a few short weeks away, Nintendo is rumoured to be prepping the arrival of the long awaited Wii 2, with the next-generation console reportedly headed for an E3 launch in June.
With the gaming get-together that is E3 scheduled to take place in Los Angeles between June 7th and 9th of this year, Nintendo is rumoured to follow last year’s confirmation of the glasses-free 3D handheld 3DS console with the official arrival of the Wii’s belated successor.
Whilst Nintendo UK has given a firm “no comment” on the reported Wii 2 announcement, latest rumours have pegged the mooted console as boasting a Blu-ray drive, speedy quad-core processor and somewhat surprisingly, an inbuilt LED projector.
Would the Wii 2 need to boast 3D credential like its pocket-friendly sibling to pique your interest? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the possible Wii 2 arrival.

We7 Radio app brings music without data connection Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:14 AM PST We7 app tells unreliable mobile data connections to go to hell We7 has today launched a new on-the-go, personal radio service that will charge your phone with enough music to continue playing even when there is no data connection available.
We7 Radio, which is available for Android today and Apple iOS devices next month, uses your home or office Wi-Fi connection to back-up personal playlists based around your chosen artists and genres. That means, even if you're spending your day on a plane, you'll have enough tunes to get you through the journey.
The free application will be a godsend for those who love the data-hungry radio apps but are handicapped with a stringent 3G allowance by tightfisted mobile operators.
We7 says the app's "innovative buffering and caching mechanisms mean that favourite personal radio stations can be made available when on the move and regardless of available connections or data allowances."
When you download the app you can set up up to 10 different playlists to be made available at your convenience. The longer you "charge-up" your phone, the more music you will have at your disposal.
The app is free to download and free to use, but users can also upgrade to the Spotify-style Premium model of full access to songs and artists of your choice, ad-free, for a tenner a month.
Windows 7 and BlackBerry owners fret not. A version of the app friendly to your underappreciated app stores is coming later this year.

iPhone 5 specs to see metal back host antenna in logo Posted: 07 Mar 2011 06:25 AM PST Fifth-gen iPhone to drop glass-backed casing With the iPad 2 now official and pegged with a March 25th UK launch, attention of the Apple rumour mill has turned to the iPhone 5 with the next-gen smartphone reported to be adopting a metal backplate.
Doing away with the glass-backed casing of the Apple iPhone 4, a feature that has been blamed for the delay of the white-hued model, Apple is rumoured to returning to the metal backing seen in the original iPhone with a number of key differences.
Reported to be ridding the handset of its issue struck side-mounted antenna, Apple is rumoured to be moving the signal receiving feature in a hand-avoiding friendly location, namely the trademark rear mounted Apple logo. It is reported that the logo will be made of a resin material which will host the handset’s Wi-Fi, cellular and all other radio antennas.
The reports, which come from repeated Apple leaker, The Economic Daily News, also suggest the eagerly awaited handset will follow tradition and be unveiled in June or July, refuting claims of a delay, and will come packing the same A5 dual-core processor that will feature in the recently unveiled Apple iPad 2.
Would you prefer a metal or a glass backing to the next generation Apple iPhone? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Measuring up at just 300x192x30mm and a mere 1.06kg in weight, the 11-inch Apple MacBook Air, is a true beaut of the tech industry with a claimed 5 hour battery life joined by a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo dual-core core processor and 2GB of RAM of both the 64GB and 128GB SSD offerings as standard.

Set to offer simple, convenient access to more than 200 UK radio stations, UK Radioplayer will mark the first time BBC and commercial radio station have been brought together in a single, online, on-demand, catch-up service.
Plans for the service were announced by the BBC director of audio and music, Tim Davie, two years ago. With the UK Radioplayer has now been confirmed for launch later this month a number of content suppliers expressing their excitement for the upcoming audio outlet. Speaking on the release Matt Deega of radio consultancy firm Folder Media announced via Twitter: "Very excited about UK Radio Player launching on the 31st March. Apple says Opera app for 'adults only' Posted: 07 Mar 2011 03:01 AM PST Bizarre move welcomed with amusement by Opera chief. Apple has made some strange moves when policing its App Stores for iOS and Mac. But surely claiming that Opera can only be used by those aged 17 and over is the most bizarre yet.
Opera is the first third party app to hit the Mac App Store. Apple’s move is inexplicable seeing as you can use its own Safari browser to go to Opera’s official website and simply download it there.
Fortunately, Opera’s Jan Standal is seeing the funny side. He said, “I’m very concerned. Seventeen is very young, and I am not sure if, at that age, people are ready to use such an application. It’s very fast, you know, and it has a lot of features. I think the download requirement should be at least 18.”
Has Apple lost the plot? Or is it right to give Opera an adults-only rating? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony buys Hawk-Eye live sports tracking company Posted: 07 Mar 2011 02:55 AM PST British based company to become part of Sony Professional Sony has officially announced that it has acquired the UK based company Hawk-Eye Ltd, best known for introducing live sports tracking technology now commonly used in both cricket and tennis.
No financial details of the buyout have been revealed, but Sony aims to use its latest purchase to deliver "innovative solutions for sports stadia and broadcasters"
On the acquisition Naomi Climer, Vice-President Sony Europe, commented, "Hawk-Eye is recognised globally for its innovative solutions for resolving close calls in critical sporting situations, particularly in cricket and tennis where they have developed a worldwide reputation. Players, officials and sports fans have all appreciated the accurate and entertaining way in which Hawk-Eye has integrated its technology into these key sports."
Paul Hawkins, the founder of Hawk-Eye, said, "Over the last decade Hawk-Eye has become the reference standard technology for ball tracking and graphics in tennis, cricket and snooker. Our skills and established knowledge coupled with Sony's breadth of capabilities and technologies will create immense opportunities for the sports industry."
Interestingly, as football governing body FIFA met last week to discuss the possibility of goal-line technology finally being introduced to the beautiful game, this could well pave the way for Hawk-Eye to finally eradicate errors like Frank Lampard's disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa last summer.
Sony has already kicked up a working relationship with FIFA after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was broadcast in 3D, so Hawk-Eye may just be next on the agenda. Lampard perhaps won't be the only one hoping it does...

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 02:21 AM PST Amazon sticks HP's new tab online, but is keeping mum on price. The HP TouchPad has hit Amazon, with the online retailer sticking up a placeholder for the webOS slate. It’s the Wi-Fi only model, and while the online retailer delivers full specs, it’s less forthcoming on price. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HP Touchpad video Source: T3 Tech Videos ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sadly, we’re only teased with, “Sign up to be notified when this product becomes available.” While Amazon’s listing suggests that could be soon, HP said at the TouchPad’s launch last month that it would be landing, “…in the summer”.
The TouchPad is the first tablet to use webOS and rocks some seriously impressive specs. There’s an iPad-matching 9.7-inch panel, HP Beats Audio tech and a Bluetooth keyboard thrown in for good measure.
With the iPad 2’s release now imminent, surely HP won’t want to hang around and lose more ground to its key rival. Stay tuned for more news on this as we get it.

Google cleans up Android malware infection Posted: 07 Mar 2011 01:00 AM PST Malware problem highlights fragmentation issues. Google has issued a patch to all phones affected by last week’s Android malware debacle, which left thousands of phones at risk. The virus was caused by rogue apps, which accessed personal data, including IMEI numbers and hardware details.
The update, called Android Market Security Tool March 2011, is currently being sent to affected devices, which are said to number around 260,000. An email from Google will tell punters if they’ve been affected, while a second message will confirm the new code has been installed.
58 malware-loaded apps are said to have made their way into Android Market. Google has used its remote kill switch to remove these from phones using them, as well as sending out the patch update.
While it says that phones using software higher than Android 2.2.2 are not affected, this raises some big questions about Android updates. With so many Android owners still using older versions, either through lack of knowledge or hardware limitations, Google needs to find some smart ways to combat similar attacks in the future.
Have you been affected? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset spied Posted: 06 Mar 2011 11:44 PM PST But will phone ever get official launch? Sony Ericsson promised the world it’d get to work on a Windows Phone 7 handset way back when the OS was first launched in February 2010. But having decided to go all in with Android, it was thought such a device would never rear its head.
However, new spy shots clearly show a working Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 mobile. While this might get WP7 fanatics salivating, it should be pointed out that this is a prototype, with plans for a release still unclear.
The device certainly looks sharp, with isolated QWERTY keys and Sony Ericsson’s regular Xperia-like design.
What do you make of this prototype blower? Should Sony Ericsson release a phone packing WP7, or just leave it to HTC, Samsung and LG to fight it out? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot: only 3 devices allowed Posted: 06 Mar 2011 11:32 PM PST Leaked AT&T doc shows up Apple's plans. Getting set to unleash Apple’s new Personal Hotspot function when iOS 4.3 lands next week? Well, we’ve got some bad news. A leaked memo from US network AT&T claims that you’ll only be able to share your Wi-Fi network with three devices at any one time.
Initially, it was thought this was an AT&T issue, but further digging reveals this is very much part of iOS 4.3. That means UK networks will only let you beam out your connection to a trio of gadgets using Wi-Fi.
Apple’s own official iOS 4.3 page says, “You can share your connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB — with up to three of those connections using Wi-Fi.” A footnote then adds, “Personal Hotspot requires a supporting hotspot tethering plan from your carrier and works with up to three devices over Wi-Fi, three devices over Bluetooth, and one device over USB.”
This will be a boon to those who say that Android’s hotspot smarts offer a better deal if you want to share your data. And will doubtless again open up the debate of Apple controlling what you do with their kit.
Tell us what you think of this story on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
