Tech Week: Apple patent iPad replacement and Kinect Porn

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
It looks like the Apple could have a lot of work ahead of it as new patents emerge hinting towards exciting upcoming devices from the Cupertino company. The first patent to appear this week saw Apple targeting the 3D market as it unveiled its technology for glasses-free 3D displays in the home. This was followed a day later by the revelation of an upcoming tablet/laptop hybrid device that will feature a full keyboard with a sliding, transformable screen. Whilst these devices are still just in patent form Apple looks set to launch iOS 4.3 next week following a number of leaks.

Elsewhere on the Apple front, the iPad and expected iPad 2 have been stealing headlines as it emerged Apple has penned a suppliers contract to bring dual cameras to the next gen tablet. This news followed the revelation that the iPad 2 and RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook are to launch just days apart. For those looking to pick up an iPad ahead of Christmas, Three Mobile has announced it will offer subsidised iPads under £200 with other companies offering the leading tablet completely free.

Angry Birds is the biggest app ever released and it just got bigger as it is given a Christmas themed makeover and Angry Bird Seasons launches free on Android devices. iOS filled units received Angry Birds Seasons the following day, however, with a pricetag as news filtered through that the bird flinging app has topped 7 million Android downloads to date.

Microsoft has had an up and down week with the launch of Xbox Live Rewards marred by newsKinect has been hacked for the porn industry and the exciting news of a large Windows Phone 7 update bringing multitasking in the New Year being knocked by reports of staggeringly low Phone 7 sales to date. Chin up Microsoft, we at T3 think Phone 7 is a winner.

Samsung Galaxy Tab shifts 1 million units

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 04:48 AM PST

Christmas comes early at Samsung HQ.

Samsung have confirmed that they have sold over a million of the iPad-bothering Galaxy Tab worldwide since its launch two months ago, with Sammy claiming they're aiming to raise that figure to 1.5 million by the end of the year.

Samsung are still very much playing on Apple's home turf, however, with the big A shifting twice that number of its iPad in the same timeframe. Despite the Galaxy Tab's pre-Christmas popularity surge, Jobs and Co. still enjoy an estimated 90% share of the tablet market.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab packs a smaller, 7" screen size to the iPad's 9.7", as well as dual cameras (front and rear-facing), expandable storage and Google's Android 2.2, but initially received a shaky reception for its original ludicrously high price point.

Worldwide, the company have also flogged a cool five million of their Galaxy S smartphones, the combined sales of which can't do them any harm when they come up against the iPad 2 and BlackBerry's PlayBook tablet next year.

Google Chrome OS netbook revealed 7th December

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 04:06 AM PST

Google's own-brand Chrome OS netbooks may be a lot closer that we'd thought, with Engadget reporting that the new laptops will be getting their first outing at a Google event on December 7th, new Chrome OS and all.

We've heard before that the new Chrome netbooks will be released as beta versions to Google's closest "friends and family" before the end of the year, with the public release to follow Q1 2011. The Chrome OS itself is rumoured to be making its debut before year's end.

The Chrome OS is thought to be aimed at netbooks and will be open source and linux-based, using cloud storage and web-based apps to keep Google's netbooks nippy.

Google are holding the mystery event in San Fransisco on the 7th, and according to the invitation are promising "exciting news about Chrome". Consider yourself suitably primed for a Chrome-book announcement.

Motorola Droid 2 explodes in man's ear

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 02:57 AM PST

Alleged Milestone 2 malfunction leads to stitches for US customer.

Readers considering adding Motorola's Milestone 2 to their Christmas list may want to hold fire, as a US customer has reported his two-day-old Milestone (or Droid 2, as it's known across the pond) blew up in his ear while trying to make a call.

Aron Embry claimed on Fox News that his new Droid 2 turned on him as he was getting into his car. "I heard a loud pop. I didn't feel any pain initially. I put the phone down. I felt something dripping. I realised it was probably blood."

Despite the alleged explosion, the phone was apparently still in working condition, although the screen was cracked (and was spattered with blood).

Upon receiving the injury, Embry did what any victim of such misfortune would, and drove over to the nearby school where his wife works and got her to take pictures of him. He was then taken to hospital where he received four stitches.

Motorola have yet to comment on whether they think this is a real technical problem with the Droid 2 or if there's been some foul play on the part of Embry, but when a man's first reaction is to get pictures of a bleeding wound rather than get it stitched up, we'd say a bit of courtroom drama is on the cards. Take a look at the evidence for yourself in the video below:
