News@8pm: Internet porn to be banned and Facebook value

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Internet porn ban is a concept that sounds almost farcical in its enormity but the Brisith government has announced it intends to force internet service providers to restrict all web-based pornography to an opt-in service in an attempt to prevent minors from exposure. Elsewhere in web land and on an equally grand scale, Facebook has today been valued at a reported $56 billion (£36 billion) a hefty sum only further eclipsed by predictions that this value will rise to $200 billion by 2015.

COD: Black Ops might well be close to two months old now but the first person shooter is still going strong today claiming top spot of the Christmas all format UK gaming charts, its fifth week atop the pile in six weeks since arrival. Looking to continue the popularity of the latest Call of Duty edition, developers Treyarch has announced the first Black Ops downloadable content that will launch on February 1st exclusively for the Xbox 360 bringing new multiplayer maps to the dominant game release.

Upcoming phone releases have been given a positive boost today as news landed that Samsung's Google Nexus S is to be on the receiving end of a tasty price drop ahead of launch as SIM-free price tags have more than £100 snipped off prior to arrival. In other smartphone news, Nokia is rumoured to be preparing Windows Phone 7 touting handsets for launch with the Finnish company having instigated talks with Microsoft over use of the mobile OS.

Tablets and eReaders are expected to be atop many a Christmas wish list this year with the iPad expected to take top honours. The many new iPad owners milling around in January looking for content are expected to receive a Daily offering from media mogul Murdoch as News Corp's upcoming iPad paper readies for a January 17th arrival. On the eReader front Sony has declared that its latest batch of electronic books "will sell out around the world" in the final Christmas shopping push.

Call of Duty: Black Ops first DLC announced for Xbox 360

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 08:16 AM PST

Black Ops DLC to hit Xbox ahead of other consoles

The first downloadable content pack for the dominant first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops has been announced with the additional gameplay options to be made available from February 1st.

Dubbed ‘First Strike’ the DLC will feature a new multiplayer map pack that contains four new regular maps and a single additional zombie environment  building on what has quickly become the biggest entertainment release of 2010 as well as the all-format gaming charts' Christmas No 1.

The new multiplayer maps will see gamers competing in the Hong Kong and Artic Circle levels previously visited in the existing single-player campaign mode, as well as landing in new environments set at the Berlin Wall and within the confines of an ice hockey stadium.

Sure to cause further controversy with the PS3 COD gamers that felt cheated by an inferior game offering, the first Black Ops DLC will initially land exclusively on the Xbox 360 with additional consoles expected to be on the receiving end of the new gameplay modes later in the month. Wannabe DLC gamers will have to fork over $15, 1,200 Microsoft Points, in order to download the additional content.

Online pornography to be restricted by goverment

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 07:16 AM PST

Internet porn to face the chop from Conservative government

The current conservative government will pressure Britain’s internet service providers into blocking widespread access to online pornography, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey has announced.

Speaking in an interview with national newspaper The Sunday Time, Vaizey said he would be holding talks with BT, Talk Talk and Virgin Media “in the near future” to discuss ways of changing the current open availability of online porn in the home as a means of protecting minors from adult content. A potential opt-in service is expected to top his list of recommendations.

Despite repeated cries by ISPs that such rules would be hugely expensive and near impossible to implement Vaizey declared: "This is a very serious matter. I think it is very important that it's the ISPs that come up with solutions to protect children. I'm hoping they will get their acts together so that we don't have to legislate, but we are keeping an eye on the situation and we will have a new communications bill in the next couple of years."

Vaizey’s call to action follows on from claims last month by Conservative MP Claire Perry who announced her fears that whilst 60 per cent of nine to 19 year olds have accessed internet pornography, just 15 per cent of parents know how to install web filters on their home machines.

Although illegal content, such as indecent images of children, are already blocked by internet service providers, Vaizey’s new requests would see perfectly legal adult content barred from access. On this potential milestone in internet use Secretary General of the ISP Association, Nicholas Lansman, said: Blocking lawful pornography content is less clear cut, will lead to the blocking of access to legitimate content and is only effective in preventing inadvertent access."

An official BT spokesperson added: "There are many legal, consumer rights and technical issues that would need to be considered before any new Web-blocking policy was developed."

Do you think an opt-in system would deter teenagers from attempting to access online smut via their home PCs? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook valued at $56 billion following private shares sale

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 06:27 AM PST

Facebook value to rise to $200 billion by 2015

Leading social networking website Facebook has been valued at a reported $56 billion, a smidge under £36 billion, after the private sale of a number of the company’s shares.

Trading firm Sharepost handled the private sale of 165,000 Facebook shares, each of which sold for $25, in what was described as a “significantly oversubscribed” auction that gave the internet phenomenon its weighty new valuation.

Despite this new price tag, industry experts are already predicting Facebook could see its worth rise to $200 by 2015 as it continues to dominate the vastly lucrative social media markets and learns to fully attune itself to targeted advertising.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Wedbush financial analyst Lou Kerner said: “What you’ve got to do if you want to value Facebook is look out a few years and think ‘what can Facebook be?’”  He went on to predict: “It is easy to see that more than 20 per cent of all page views in 2015 are going to be on Facebook… It is really conservative to think that Facebook will get 20 per cent of advertising spend on the internet in 2015 and that alone would be $22 billion.”

This latest valuation comes just days after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was crowned Time Magazine’s Person of the Year and deemed to have had a larger affect on the world as a whole than any other person in the past year.

Will Facebook continue to be a dominant force by the year 2015? Share your thoughts on the longevity of the social network with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google TV hardware delays: Google puts the brakes on

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 03:18 AM PST

But when will the tech make its way to the UK?

Google has reportedly told its Google TV hardware partners to hold off from announcing any further products until it has improved the overall software offering. The word comes courtesy of the Wall Street Journal, who claims a source close to Google has revealed the delay.

It means that partners in the Google TV race such as Toshiba, LG and Sharp have had to hold off from announcing new sets and set-top boxes, which would probably have taken centre stage at January’s CES expo in Las Vegas. The problem is stereotypically Google, which has a habit of launching software that’s slightly rough-and-ready (such as Android), which finds a home in the tech community but can sometimes alienate the general public. Presumably, the company will want to ge the OS and software of Google TV just right before continuing further.

Whilst there’s been no official word on hardware delays on Google’s part, spokeswoman Gina Weakley did retread the following notion: "Our long-term goal is to collaborate with a broad community of consumer electronics manufacturers to help drive the next-generation TV-watching experience, and we look forward to working with other partners to bring more devices to market in the coming years."

Google TV, which allows users to browse the web on their sets, is available now in the US with boxes from Logitech and TVs from Sony. It’s looking likely to land in the UK in the second half of 2011.

Call of Duty: Black Ops tops Christmas gaming charts

Black Ops tops festive gaming charts

Call of Duty: Black Ops has been crowned the UK’s official Christmas number one video game as it continues to top all-format gaming charts six weeks after its official launch.

Having recorded more than 3 million UK sales since hitting stores the dominant first person shooter has already racked up in excess of £100 million in the UK alone, becoming only the third game to surpass the vastly profitable milestone, following in the footsteps of its predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the Nintendo based Wii Fit.

EA’s offerings of FIFA 11 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit have rounded out the festive top three whilst the long awaited Gran Turismo 5 continues to slip down the all format charts taking up sixth spot for the Christmas weekend behind Just Dance 2 and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood in fourth and fifth respectively.

Speaking on the surge in video game sales ahead of the Christmas period, Director General of the UKIE All Format Top 40, Michael Rawlinson said: “With over 11m video games sold in the last four weeks in the UK, generating over £290m, they are clearly the gift of choice this Christmas, showing once again that the interactive entertainment industry is the UK’s leading creative industry.”

He added: "The Christmas chart also demonstrates the variety of choice on offer for consumers; there really is something for everyone.”

Sony Reader "will sell out around the world"

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

Sony claims Touch and Pocket editions doing the business globally.

Never one to be outdone by big time rivals, Sony has come out and claimed that its e-readers are likely to sell out “around the world” in the final run-up to Christmas.

The words echo Amazon’s claims last week, which saw the online store say it had sold “millions” of Kindles since it released a new, cut-price model earlier this year. With the ipad also flying off shelves, it seems Sony doesn’t want to be left behind.

Sony also said that the Reader Touch had been outselling the Reader Pocket, that despite a much heftier price tag for the former. It seems Sony wants to deflect all the e-reader buzz around Amazon’s bargain bucket offerings.

Got a Sony Reader? Or think they’re too pricey compared to the Kindle? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Kinect finger movement recognition on the way?

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:50 AM PST

Kinect firmware update to also add Hand rotation support

Microsoft Kinect could soon support finger gestures and hand rotation giving the Xbox 360 peripheral Minority Report-style control.

Eurogamer has spoken to an anonymous source who claims the Kinect team is working "very hard" to bring greater accuracy to the motion-sensing controller which could be delivered via a series of firmware updates.

Hooking up Kinect colour and depth cameras to a PC have shown that the peripheral can support 640 x 480 high resolution images as opposed to the 320 x 240 images initially stated in the Kinect specs.

Ths would appear to indicate that there is room for gesture improvements and If this source is to be believed, accuracy could be quadrupled which should make performing an eye-gauge in Fighters Uncaged all that more possible.

TapTap Revenge 4 lands on the App Store

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:32 AM PST

TTR4 is now free.

One of the most popular iPhone games ever, Tap Tap Revenge now has a fourth edition, which is free to download from the App Store for the first time.

Tap Tap Revenge 4, which, for the unseasoned, is akin to playing Guitar Hero on your touchscreen by tapping the musical notes as they reach the bar, has been wildly successful since debuting as one of the original iPhone games.

The fourth edition features over 100 songs from artists like Katy Perry, My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park and, naturally, Lady Gaga.

There's also a host of new social features which allow you to share your high scores with the online community via Twitter and Facebook. You can also "Like" tracks of your choosing.

Tapulous, which is now owned by Disney, has also added an "Arcade Mode" which presents more challenging obstacles to achieving note-for-note perfection, while the iOS 4 upgrade improves resolution for the Retina Display and Apple's new Game Centre.

Check out how the new, free edition, looks in the video below.

iWork '11 landing same day as Mac App Store?

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:21 AM PST

Productivity software finally coming with Mac App Store.

With the Mac App Store finally set to fling open its virtual doors on 6 January, natter about iWork ‘11’s arrival has unsurprisingly emerged. Sources had previously suggested the productivity suite would be coming alongside the new online emporium and now it looks that really could be the case.

See, stock of iWork ‘09 has run out, with one Apple store staffer telling 9to5mac that there’d be none forthcoming either and to wait for iWork '11 instead. Add-in the fact that the Apple Store’s search bar now autocompletes iWork ‘11 when you type in iWork and you can almost hear the rumour mill whirring.

To complete the gossip, it’s also been pointed out that iWork ‘09 debuted on 6 January 2009. Whatever happens, it’s expected that Numbers, Pages and Keynote will be available separately in the Mac App Store as well as a complete package.

The Daily iPad newspaper set for mid-January

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

Price details and subscription plans detailed.

The Daily, Apple and News Corp’s joint iPad newspaper venture was supposed to have already launched. But inside sources are now claiming that the game-changing effort will now show up in mid-January.

Insiders have told All Things D that The Daily will get official in the week beginning 17 January. Considering Apple used a late January gathering to unveil the iPad last year, it’s a safe bet Murdoch and Jobs’ paper will rock up at the same time as the iPad 2.

Further details have emerged about what more to expect from The Daily. It’s said to cost 99c a week and will apparently use 3D effects.

Nokia Windows Phone incoming?

Posted: 19 Dec 2010 11:50 PM PST

The unthinkable could happen in 2011, according to Eldar Murtazin.

Nokia has always been keen to crush talk of a tie-up with either Google or Microsoft, maintaining that its phones will never come loaded with a third party operating system.

However, dynamite new info about a potential hook up between Nokia and Microsoft has just surfaced, with renowned Russian mobile watcher Eldar Murtazin claiming that Espoo and Redmond are already in talks to bring Windows Phone 7 to Nokia phones.

What’s more it seems Nokia, now run by former Microsoft man Stephen Elop, initiated the negotiations. Murtazin is well-regarded for his impeccable inside sources, with Nokia known to be infuriated with his breezy access to a slew of unannounced phones and killer mobile gossip.

With Symbian reeling and MeeGo still not on any devices, such a hook-up is no longer far-fetched. With ties between both companies getting tighter thanks to deeper software integration, this is a tech marriage that could well happen in 2011.

Google Nexus S price slashed in UK

Posted: 19 Dec 2010 11:35 PM PST

Carphone Warehouse gets generous ahead of Christmas.

All primed to get a Nexus S but think the price is a tad on the steep side? Then Carphone Warehouse has got an early Christmas present for you. It’s just dropped the Gingerbread-loaded blower’s price and trimmed down the contract too.

You can now land it for £429.95 SIM-free, a huge drop from the initial £549.95 it was slapped with just last week.

To get one free on contract you’ll only need to find £30 a month instead of £35. What’s more, one of those cheap deals only lasts 18 months, with O2 touting 300 minutes, and unlimited texts and web. Not bad for a top notch new Android phone.

Tempted? Or happy to wait and see what other Android phones are coming in the New Year? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
