Black Ops issues continue despite the recent updates to Xbox and PS3 releases. Gamers have complained that they are still facing lenghty waits to find online game modes amongst a number of other issues. Elsewhere in gaming patches and GT5 is to receive a vehicle enhancing update that will revamp the lesser detailed cars available within the game.

Facebook's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg has today been declared Time Magazine's Person of the Year having changed the world through his globally dominating social networking site. Runner up to Zuckerberg was Wikileaks founder Julian Assange who made headlines elsewhere today has his bail hearing became the first court case to allow live in court Twitter updates to be made.

Mobile phone delays is a term we never like to hear here in T3 Towers yet today we have been subjected to it on more than one instance. Kicking off our morning was the news that the Sony Ericsson Yendo walkman phone has been pushed back until February 2011. This news was followed later by the mutterings that the Windows Phone 7 touting Dell Venue Pro will now not touch down until January of next year. A bad day for the mobile lovers.

HTC tablet release date set for 2011 CEO declares

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 08:13 AM PST

LTE handsets coming from HTC next year

Smartphone powerhouse HTC is to take on the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab next year as the company’s CEO hints towards a 2011 HTC tablet arrival.

In an interview with mobilebusinessbriefing.com HTC CEO Peter Chou tantalisingly declared: “[Customers] may want Windows or Android; or they may want big screen or small screen, they may want keyboard or tablet; HTC will let the consumer decide.”

Remaining tight-lipped about an expected arrival date or confirmed specifications for the expected HTC tablet, Chou instead turned focus to the company’s future in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) handsets that offer a faster mobile network connection than current 3G of GSM systems. US network providers Verizon and MetroPCS currently offer such 4G LTE networks although the service is restricted to major cities at present.

With much rumour and speculation surrounding a 4G compatible Apple iPhone 4, expected to hit the Verizon network early in the New Year, Chou was keen to add: We think that the US mobile operators will be taking the lead and pushing 4G LTE in the US market... We are working on LTE devices for next year."

What features would you like to see appear on any upcoming HTC branded tablet devices? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the motted HTC tablet.

Mark Zuckerberg named Time magazine's Person of the Year

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 07:00 AM PST

Facebook founder Zuckerberg most influential man of 2010

Billionaire founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has been named Time magazine’s Person of the Year, an accolade bestowed up the man or woman deemed to have most influenced world events in the past year.

The 26 year old Harvard dropout created Facebook back in 2004 before celebrating 500 million active users of the site in July of this year. Reported to be rapidly closing in on the 600 million user mark, Facebook has still yet to infiltrate large areas of the world with Africa, China and Russia recording feel social adopters.

Celebrating Zuckerberg’s selection as the Person of the Year Time journalist Lev Grossman said: "In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the US.” Grossman went on to add: "We have entered the Facebook age, and Mark Zuckerberg is the man who brought us here."

Zuckerberg, who this year placed 6th in the T3 Tech 100, the most influential people in tech, was selected "for connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives."

Beating the likes of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, the US Tea Party political movement and the 33 successfully rescued Chilean miners, Zuckerberg was noted for his philanthropy, having followed in the footsteps of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and pledging to donate half of his wealth. On his generosity the Facebook CEO last week said:  "People wait until late in their career to give back. But why wait when there is so much to be done?"

Who would be your Person of the Year? Share your thoughts and ideas with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Tron: Legacy video to be first and only iPad iAd of 2010

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 06:08 AM PST

iAds coming to Europe this month?

With the global cinema launch of Tron: Legacy set for this Friday, December 17th, it has emerged that the Sci-Fi flick will produce the first and only iPad-bound iAd of the year.

Having got off to a somewhat rocky start in the US following its announcement in April, iAds compatibility landed on the iPad in the recent weeks with the arrival of iOS 4.2. With Apple struggling to find companies willing to take the risk of the minimum $1 million spend on an iAd campaign, the upcoming Tron: Legacy promotion will mark a strong first in-app advertisement push for Apple’s market leading tablet.

Embedded in a number of iPad apps, the Tron advertisement will feature 10 minutes of video and image footage from the movie as well as a collection of cinema hosting timetables and the ability to download the soundtrack direct from iTunes, all without leaving the ad.

Whilst Apple’s iAd platform is currently only available in the US, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to roll out the advertising system across Europe this month with a range of new iPad campaigns kicking off in 2011.

What do you think on iAds infiltrating your UK-based iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on iAds’ UK arrival.

SwiftKey intelligent keyboard for Android goes HD

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 03:51 AM PST

Smart keyboard gets HD upgrade.

SwiftKey, the touchscreen keyboard that attempts to make life easier by guessing the next word you want to type has launched a new HD edition for Android.

SwiftKey HD ups the resolution to cope with the influx of new Android handsets boasting screens in the 4-inch plus category and the host of Android tablets currently in the pipeline. It's also got a tweaked UI and five different languages to choose from.

The app boats complex language technology which attempts to guess your next word depending on what came before, alleviating the stress of typing out long messages on some of the notoriously sticky lower-end Android touchscreens.

In theory, it means that users can type out entire sentences just by accepting the word that SwiftKey HD has suggested.

The company has also doubled its free trial offering to once month with the HD launch, but if you want to get your hands on it full-time without splashing cash on the Android Market, you can win it with T3's Appvent Calendar which is giving away £3,000 in apps by the time the 25th rolls around.

Wikileaks trial sees Twitter allowed in court for first time

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 03:44 AM PST

Twitter use allowed in court for first time

The bail hearing of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has made legal history as the first case to allow live updates to be sent from the courtroom via microblogging site Twitter.

Although there is no specific rule banning the use of mobile phones in courtroom proceedings, pocketable handsets have to date been deemed unusable under the same legal reasoning that sees television cameras and recording equipment are prohibited.

Forgoing tradition, Howard Riddle, Chief Magistrate presiding over Assange’s bail hearing agreed to allow reports to tweet directly from the courtroom on the grounds that they did so “quietly” and “did not disturb” the court. Riddle’s decision follows recent remarks from the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge who asked: “If it is possible to file a story via email from a laptop in court, then why is Twitter any different?"

A number of reporters attending the Assange hearing made use of Riddle’s ruling with The Times journalist Alexi Mostrous sending the sub-140 character message “judge just gave me explicit permission to tweet proceedings if it’s quiet and doesn’t disturb anything. #wikileaks”.

Call of Duty: Black Ops PS3 problems persist

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

Persistent issues leave 2010's bestseller hamstrung on PS3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops has been suffering on the PS3 for some time. And while Sony released a patch for the game yesterday, it seems the problems just won’t go away.

Gamers have taken to official forums to complain about the lengthy waits while trying to find an online game, with some describing it as ‘almost unplayable’. Others have moaned about the game crashing, getting ‘connection lost’ error messages mid-game and the inability to host online showdowns.

The makers of Black Ops, Treyarch, had hoped this patch would solve any problems, but now it looks like it’ll have to go back to the gaming board. Accusations that it can’t match up to Modern Warfare 2 maker Infinity Ward will doubtless grow too.

Are you a PS3 owner suffering from Black Ops breakdown? Let us know all about it on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Gran Turismo 5 car list to be given graphical update

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 02:43 AM PST

New Gran Turismo 5 update inbound

Leading PS3 racing simulator Gran Turismo 5 is preparing for a new update as standard model cars are set to be given a premium overhaul, Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed.

In an interview with Famitsu, car enthusiast and Gran Turismo creational mastermind Yamauchi revealed that the standard, lower detailed vehicles included in the game are to be given a graphical overhaul, bringing them up to spec with the visually superior premium model cars.

Whilst it is yet unknown exactly when this update will land and whether it will be implemented on all standard model cars, it is one that will please a number of the games critics that have already seen their issues with the title’s damage models appeased.

Despite having dropped to fifth in the UK All Format gaming charts this week, it was revealed on Monday that the long overdue release of Gran Turismo 5 has recorded more than5.5 million sales in its opening two weeks, an impressive figure yet one massively eclipsed by Call of Duty: Black Ops which shifted 5.6 million copies in its opening 24 hours.

Nokia planning Symbian UI overhaul

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 02:02 AM PST

Nokia fleshes out Symbian upgrade plans.

Nokia’s made no secret of the fact that Symbian will be getting a major upgrade in 2011, with a string of software boosts already promised. But until now, detail of just what we can expect has been thin on the ground.

Fortunately, some snippets about Espoo’s plans have leaked out after a presentation at Beijing’s International Mobile Internet Conference. Word is that an update in the first quarter of 2011 will bring a new browser with an easier interface, something Symbian has been crying out for for years.

But the big changes are set to come in Q2 and Q3, when Nokia gives the whole look of Symbian a refresh, promising, "a new look and feel for the user interface, a more flexible home screen, an updateable HTML5 browser and an easier software update experience".

That’s certainly great news, especially as even Symbian 3 doesn’t feel as up-to-date as it could be. Expect to see more on this at next year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.

Dell Venue Pro delayed until January

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 01:17 AM PST

No official reason for delay, but screen supplies and Wi-Fi issues said to be to blame.

The Dell Venue Pro, the first Windows Phone 7 handset to rock a QWERTY portrait slider, has been shoved back into 2011. It had been slated for a Stateside launch yesterday.

Reports have claimed that the delay is down to problems with AMOLED screen supplies. However, Wi-Fi niggles and problems with SIMs were also reported when pre-production models were shown off in stores across the pond.

However you cut it, this is a huge blow to Dell. The tech giant would obviously have liked to get its WP7 cell out and in the wild ahead of Christmas. Now it won’t be available until 5 January, hardly a winning time to start flogging a premium handset.

Gutted? Or happy to wait until Dell gets it right? Tell us what you think on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Google Nexus S lands at Carphone Warehouse early

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:56 PM PST

Nexus S shows up as in-stock on Carphone Warehouse website.

Want a Google Nexus S so bad that you can’t wait until 20 December? Well, Carphone Warehouse might just have the answer. Its website slipped up last night and put the all-new Gingerbread cell ‘in-stock’, five days ahead of schedule.

Sadly, stock status is currently showing ‘out of stock - back order’, but it’s well worth hammering the phone purveyor’s website hard just in case the blower becomes available again.

The Google Nexus S is the first phone to cram in Android 2.3 Gingerbread, touting a tweaked UI, better keyboard, improved app management and NFC tech. Plus the phone rocks a sleek curved screen and looks to die for.

Sony Ericsson Yendo pushed back to February

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:30 PM PST

First finger-friendly Walkman was unveiled way back in June.

Chances are you’ve forgotten the Sony Ericsson Yendo. The touchscreen Walkman phone, the first in Sony’s vintage music range to feature a proddable panel, was unveiled in June. However, its release has now been pushed back until February next year.

The reason? Well, one Sony Ericsson exec says it’s not happy with the current version of the software. The phone uses a similar ‘four corner’ UI to the mobile maker’s Android phones, a smart system which works well.

While this is an admittedly basic phone, we’re talking 2.6-inch screen, a lack of 3G, a simply 2MP camera and Walkman software, this does not show Sony Ericsson in the best light. The Japanese-Swedish tech giant is already suffering thanks to its failure to roll out up-to-the-minute updates to its Android lineup.

Angry Birds mega app given 90s style makeover

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 09:00 AM PST

Angry Birds given an extra pixel edge

Apple’s top iPhone app of the year Angry Birds has been given a retro ‘90’s makeover as the miffed feathered warriors fly back to the days of mass pixilation.

A number of mocked up screenshots have emerged from Penney Design with the feather app phenoms being displayed as they would have looked if created back in 1992. As well as having the classic jagged edged, visible pixel appearance the Angry Birds throwback features enough nostalgia to make you feel all warm inside.

Sadly nothing more than a series of unplayable single screens, the 90’s style Angry Birds features an on-screen cursor as well as power, wind and angle gauges, all necessary preludes to the current era of touchscreen interfaces.

Whilst there is currently no sign of the 90’s throwback being turned into a playable release, something we hope changes in the near future, Angry Birds creator Rovio today announced that its bird catapulting, pig squashing, egg salvaging app has now been downloaded more than 50 million times across all mobile platforms.

Would you play a dated looks, 1990’s style edition of Angry Birds? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 5 screens to be produced by Toshiba

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:57 AM PST

iPhone 5 to maintain LCD display

Tech manufacturer Toshiba is to build a new factory in Ishikawa tasked with producing high-res LCD panels for Apple’s upcoming ranges of iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

Reports by the Nikkei Business Daily have announced the new Japanese based factory, set to cost 100 billion Yen (£757 million) and be constructed during 2011, will double Toshiba’s current monthly production capacity of 8.5 million units.

Part funded by Apple, the new factory will begin production next year with the mooted Apple iPhone 5 expected to be one of the first devices catered for.

The reports, which have yet to be confirmed or denied by either Apple or Toshiba would seemingly mark the end of Toshiba’s current low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels production facility in the Ishikawa area.

Microsoft tablets to launch with Windows 8 at CES 2011

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 06:35 AM PST

New OS to get partnered with new tablets at CES 2011

Microsoft is preparing to launch a range of tablet devices running a brand new Windows 8 OS at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2011, new reports from the New York Times suggests

The New York Times quotes an unnamed source in a report declaring the arrival of Windows 8 on own-branded Microsoft tablets as well as tablet devices from both Samsung and Dell. Rumours have surrounded the arrival of Windows 8 following criticism to the strength of Windows 7 as a touchscreen tablet user interface.

Whilst these comments have yet to be officially confirmed or denied by Microsoft and the other mooted tablet providers, the Samsung branded device has been described by another NYT source as: "similar in size and shape to the Apple iPad, although it is not as thin.”

The unnamed loudmouth went on to add: "It also includes a unique and slick keyboard that slides out from below for easy typing."

Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest live from CES 2011 early in January and sign up to the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds to let us know what features you would most like to see on the mooted Windows 8 OS.

Tinchy Stryder gives live iPad only music performance

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 05:12 AM PST

iPad used to make music by urban star

Music sensation Tinchy Stryder has recorded a live performance with his crew using nothing more than a set of Apple iPads to create the backing music.

In a video created to promote the availability of the market leading Apple tablet at the Carphone Warehouse, Stryder and his band of merry men are seen taking over one of the retailer’s stores before breaking out the iPads and dropping a supposed off the cuff performance.

Asides from being a little staged the video shows the musical capabilities of the 9.7-inch tablet that, through a number of music-based apps, is now able to create everything from a classical piano sound to the amalgamated urban beats crafted by the pint-sized pop star.

Available online and in store now, the Carphone Warehouse is offering the full spectrum of iPads at prices mimicking those in the Apple store with additional connection packages available from Vodafone and Three Mobile. A number of mobile network providers including Three, Orange and T-Mobile have all recently announced that they will be offering subsidised Wi-Fi + 3G iPads ahead of the festive period.

Avatar 3D Blu-ray exclusive to Panasonic until 2012

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 04:28 AM PST

Panasonic secures exclusive rights to Avatar 3D Blu-ray

The 3D Blu-ray edition of Hollywood blockbuster Avatar will be exclusively available through the purchase of extra dimensional Panasonic AV equipment until 2012 it has been revealed, much to the dismay of early 3D TV adopters.

With the uptake and expansion of 3D home entertainment pivoting on the availability of strong 3D content it seems unjust that arguably the best and certainly the biggest 3D film to date will be held exclusively for those willing to forego the range of other strong 3D TV providers in favour of a Panasonic branded product.

Speaking with AV blogger AVZombie, Panasonic reportedly stated: “Just to confirm the Avatar bundle deal does run until Feb 2012.”

Whilst Panasonic can be guaranteed to cash in on the blue-hued character exclusivity those buying Panasonic branded 3D equipment could well find themselves able to collect a premium sum for their free 3D Avatar incentive if looking to sell it via any number of internet sales sites.

Nokia E7 hitting Three early next year

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

QWERTY-packing phone finally on its way after September unveiling.

The Nokia E7 was one of Nokia World’s key unveilings, way back in September. And now, finally, word is slipping out about when gadget fans can lay their paws on the Symbian 3 packing blower.

Three has confirmed that it will start selling the E7 in the first quarter of next year, giving itself until March to get the phone onto store shelves.

In a statement, Three said, “The Nokia E7 makes the most of our strong 3G network showcasing features such as Email, huge 4 inch screen for fast browsing and customisable home screens."

On top of that huge panel, which itself is AMOLED, the E7 also sports an 8 megapixel camera, Microsoft document editing, 16GB storage and HD video skills. Not to mention a sleek slide out QWERTY keyboard.

Nokia clearly thinks this is a phone for business types. Whether it’ll do the business come 2011 however, remains to be seen.

Angry Birds tops 50 million all platform app downloads

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 02:49 AM PST

Angry Birds' temper eased by mass success

Avian-flinging app sensation Angry Birds has surpassed 50 million downloads across all mobile platforms, developer Rovio has revealed.

Talking with CNBC, the Finnish developer declared the staggering download figures that cross iPhone, iPad, Android and WebOS platforms. The app which cost a reported $100,000 to make and involves catapulting birds at a band of egg stealing pigs has become a global sensation in 2010 and was recently declared by Apple as the most popular iPhone download of the year.

With console and PC versions of Angry Birds currently in the works, Rovio revealed that it “hopes to spin the franchise into a movie or children’s TV show.”

Racking up an impressive 200 million minutes of gameplay every day, the equivalent of 16 human years every hour, Angry Birds has entered near cult status with a range of merchandise now available and even Angry Bird day celebrations taking place across the world.

Motorola Droid 2 explosion faked

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 02:10 AM PST

Moto says handset did not show any signs of explosion.

Recent news of a Motorola Droid 2 user’s phone exploding, leaving him with cuts to the side of his head, appear to have been faked.

Motorola has said it has analysed the phone, and the results don’t match up with Arom Embry’s story. A company source said, “The only things that could explode in a phone would have resulted in a phone that did not work, yet this phone worked. And there was no explosive damage to the device.”

The Moto insider says it appears the phone was dropped and the screen cracked, which could have caused cuts to Embry’s ear. Either way, Embry will now need to come out and defend his story.

Amazon Windowshop iPad app launches in the UK

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 02:03 AM PST

Swipe your way through all Amazon has to offer.

Amazon has brought its rather nifty Windowshop app, a tablet-friendly re-envisioning of the online shopping experience, to UK iPad owners.

Amazon Windowshop is a touchscreen interface that allows users to navigate through items extremely easily and Amazon is hoping the launch of the iPad app in the UK will spark a late Christmas shopping spree.

The app is a 'top-to-bottom rewrite of the site' according to Greg Greeley, the Vice President EU Retail at Amazon.

"Amazon Windowshop has been designed and built without compromise just for iPad and we are excited to be able to bring it to customers in the UK in time for Christmas," he says.

"It's a top-to-bottom rewrite of Amazon.co.uk with a completely new fluid experience that offers users a unique, fast and convenient way to search, browse and buy from Amazon.co.uk and thousands of Marketplace sellers."

It's been a busy week for Amazon who also announced a Windowshop app for the forthcoming Google Chrome Web Store and it'll be interesting to see how that works in a non-touchscreen environment. In the meantime, Windowshop for iPad is available to download free from the App Store now.
