BGR have had spent some extensive time looking at notable features such as app multitasking, 1080p HD video, the four multi-touch bezels and finding out how pairing the PlayBook with BlackBerry smartphones will work
Interestingly at the end of the video, it is also revealed that those who successfully submit PlayBook apps to BlackBerry World will receive a free BlackBerry PlayBook when they become available.
Earlier this week, footage of the PlayBook at a network event in Canada surfaced showcasing 1080p HD video playback capabilities, the device’s operating system, the user interface, and a slick two-style gesture control design.
The BlackBerry Playbook is expected to launch in spring 2011, just days ahead of the arrival of Apple’s muted iPad 2, with the RIM tablet also sporting a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and front and rear facing cameras.

Peel app turns iPhone into universal remote control Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:32 AM PST New set-up allows you to be lazier and still be tidier. A new iPhone app, called Peel, can turn your iPhone into an electronic programme guide and double up as a universal remote for your TV, Blu-ray player and other home entertainment devices.
The Peel app, which is free to download from the App Store, produces a personalised TV guide based on inputting your favourite shows. It'll then tell you which ones are available to you.
The app also joins forces with a soon-to-be-released puck-shaped table top device that transmits the signal from your Apple handset to your TV set. Another dongle plugs into your router's Ethernet port to enable users to use their phone to control the TV via WiFi using the Zigbee protocol.
The system currently works with TVs, Blu-ray players and cable boxes, but a forthcoming update will cater for Apple TV, Roku, TiVo and home theatre receivers. The price of the Peel set-up will be determined after consulting potential users.

Apple City to be designed by architect Norman Foster Posted: 08 Dec 2010 06:51 AM PST New Apple HQ to be designed by Norman Foster Famed British architect Norman Foster has reportedly been appointed by Apple to design its new headquarters in Cupertino, dubbed Apple City.
Having worked on the visually impressive City Hall and Millennium Bridge in London and the mind-bendingly expansive Millau Viaduct in France, Foster is reported by Spanish newspaper El Economista to now be tasked with the development of the new Apple HQ that will occupy an additional 98 acres of land recently brought at the company’s current Cupertino base.
Whilst this sounds like the vision of a Bond villain lair filled with Jobsian employees prowling brightly lit underground corridors in a black turtleneck uniform, Apple is reportedly set to combine its design philosophy with a series of green credentials. Environmentally friendly, renewable and recycled materials are expected to be the prime construction components for Apple City with renewable energy and a nonexistent carbon footprint also on Apple’s list of requirements.

Apple iPhone 5 to add FM radio receiver patents reveal Posted: 08 Dec 2010 06:10 AM PST Apple patent reveals radio for iPhone plans Apple looks set to bring AM, FM and Satellite radio to the upcoming iPhone 5 after the fruity tech giant filed a patent for radio mapping on its market leading handset.
The patent, which was approved last week by the US Patent and Trademark Office, would see the iPhone finally receive standard AM and FM radio capabilities with an FM radio receiver added to the top right corner of the device.
The Apple radio for iPhone patent adds to speculation of an integrated SIM being implemented in the fifth gen iPhone and was joined by a second notion from Cupertino that hints towards the imminent arrival of a radio peripheral card for the current range of MacBooks.

Google Chrome OS announced with devices coming mid 2011 Posted: 08 Dec 2010 03:36 AM PST 500 apps land in web store launch Google has officially announced the arrival of the long expected cloud-based Google Chrome OS for netbooks with devices to come pre-installed with the operating system next year.
Unlike the company’s Android OS which is centralised on touchscreen smartphones and the new breed of tablets, the Chrome operating system will target the dwindling netbook market with focus falling heavily on web-based applications.
Whilst Acer and Samsung have been announced as manufacturers of the first pre-loaded Chrome OS devices, expected to launch in around six months time, a select number of “qualified users” are currently receiving generic black 12-inch computers featuring the OS in an attempt to solve the reported “2,000 issues” hampering its widespread arrival.
Writing on the official Google Blog a Linus Upson, VP Engineering, and Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management, discussed the Chrome OS announcement stating: “We’re excited to get Chrome notebooks into the hands of users. The data from our test pilots is key to building something wonderful. We look forward to working together to make computers better.”
Announced alongside the new Google OS was the Chrome web store, beating Apple to the Mac-App punch to supply future Chrome OS users with web-based news, gaming and media applications for Chrome web browsers and the upcoming OS. Having been set live this morning, the new Chrome web store currently features more than 500 applications.
What do you think of the newly announced Google Chrome OS and the six month wait end-users will face to get their hands on the system? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 08 Dec 2010 03:01 AM PST Pricing revealed, but still no firm release date. Spotify has been dominating our musical lives here in Blighty for over two years. But spare a thought of our US music loving brethren, who still aren’t in on the act, despite constant talk about the service launching Stateside.
Well, now Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has said that the streaming effort is definitely heading to the US. Speaking at the D: Dive Into Mobile event in San Francisco, he confirmed it was on its way, but wouldn’t say when.
Ek put his evasiveness down to the fact that Spotify needs to strike a string of deals with labels in order for the service to flourish. Word is it’s not made that much cash here in Blighty despite its enormous popularity.
Ek did offer one morsel though. A monthly subscription will cost $10 (£6.30). Currently a full premium subscription costs £9.99 on these shores.

ZScape brings 3D Maps without the need for glasses Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:58 AM PST Old school tech brought bang up to date We’ll keep this brief, as the video below does all the talking needed. What we have here is a new technology from Zebra Imaging, which allows for 3D maps and models to be ‘printed’ as a colour hologram on a backlit display. ZScape, as it's called, is acheived by layering thousands of holographic images onto a single bit of slate with the use of laser precision, and the end result is an ever-changing image that the naked eye registers as one 3D whole. LG Optimus One Android Gingerbread update denied Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:10 AM PST LG claims hardware constraints prevent FroYo phone from becoming Gingerbread one, Google begs to differ. Just 48 hours after its debut, the rollout of Android Gingerbread is already starting to cause issues for Google. With a Nexus One update still “a few weeks” away according to one dev, now LG has stepped in and said its Optimus One won’t be making the move to Android 2.3.
The reason? It says Gingerbread requires a minimum 1GHz processor, and the Optimus One has a 600MHz number inside. According to LG’s official Facebook page in the US, “…it’s not possible to update the processor, unfortunately”.
Except, it seems, LG’s fibbing. Android boss Dan Morrill took to Twitter with this barbed comment: “Random note: there’s no hard minimum processor requirement for Gingerbread. Trust me, if there were I’d know”. Ouch.
So, it seems, the problems mobile makers experienced with getting Android FroYo onto old devices looks set to continue with Gingerbread. Is Google releasing too many updates? Or do handset mavens need to get their act together? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Steve Jobs: MobileMe will get better next year Posted: 08 Dec 2010 01:03 AM PST Apple boss responds to quibbles over MobileMe. MobileMe hasn’t quite been the raving success Apple had hoped, hampered by its £59 per year price tag and a raft of syncing issues that put it well behind Google’s free suite of killer cloud services.
However, Steve Jobs thinks his offering is about to turn the corner. The main man at Apple has responded to a MacRumors reader’s complaints about the service in another unsurprisingly terse email.
The initial message said, “I desperately want to stay inside of Apple'e ecosystem as much as possible. However, MobileMe is making it very difficult for me to do so. Unreliable/unpredictable syncing, creating duplicate entries (sometimes scores of them), etc. It's almost unusable… Please tell me it well get better, and soon?”
Jobs’ one line reply? “Yes, it will get a lot better in 2011.” So, there you have it folks. MobileMe is being primed for changes next year. After the Find My iPhone feature recently went free, could Jobs and co finally be plotting a gratis service to rival Google?

Virgin 100 Mbps broadband live now Posted: 07 Dec 2010 11:37 PM PST £45 a month for Britain's speediest internet service. The good people of Heckmondwike, Yorkshire might not realise it on this freezing cold morning, but they’re at the forefront of the digital revolution today, as they became one of four towns across the UK to get Virgin’s 100Mbps broadband first.
The new package, unveiled last month, touts lightning fast 100Mbps download speeds, along with 10Mbps upload and a spanking new N standard router too. Virgin even says it has the potential to speed up to a blistering 400Mbps in the future.
Colchester, Barry in South Wales and Farnborough are the other towns feeling the Virgin Media love. However, punters who want to get involved in the four places where it’s available will have to pay £45 a month for the privilege. This drops to £35 when bought with a phone line.
Do you live in one of Virgin’s new 100Mbps towns? Stumped up for the service yet? Then tell us all about it on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
