Olivia Wilde Tron: Legacy star unconvinced by 3D Posted: 06 Dec 2010 09:30 AM PST Tron warrants 3D but other films don't according to Wilde Olivia Wilde, the stunning leading lady of Tron: Legacy, the upcoming 3D sequel to the Sci-Fi classic, has declared that she is unconvinced by the current influx of ropy extra dimensional flicks.
Speaking exclusively with T3 ahead of yesterday’s UK premiere of Tron: Legacy the Hollywood actress said: “Although I do think that certain stories warrant the 3D technique, the effect, I think certain stories don’t.” She diplomatically went on to add: “Maybe I’m wrong and maybe I’m just not grasping that 3D is like the advent of colour in film, just expanding the medium and I should embrace that fully.”
Wilde added: “We are also very proud to be a film that was actually shot in 3D, a lot of films are converted in post-production which I think never quite works as well and audiences becoming quite apt at telling the difference.”
Despite the doubts she shared over the frequent use of 3D technologies, Wilde expressed her enjoyment of working with the extra dimension for the first time: “I did kind of enjoy looking into the camera some times and just marvelling at what you can see with all these mirrors inside the lens, I thought that was pretty cool. Being so used to knowing what the inside of a lens looks like from being in front of it for a lot of my life so far, looking into it and seeing this whole other complex world inside was kind of cool.”
Having been privy to an advanced screening, we at T3 can confirm that Tron: Legacy’s use of 3D is both warranted and of excellent quality, not abused but adding a repeated depth to both the images and narrative.
Do you think the recent spate of 3D films have diluted the user’s enjoyment of extra dimension movies? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for a full interview with Olivia Wilde in the coming weeks. Android Market outage, app payments declined Posted: 06 Dec 2010 07:25 AM PST Google yet to comment publically on what caused the problem. Android app developers lost out this weekend as the Android Market randomly declined payments from buyers hoping to download paid-for applications.
The outage, which ran from Saturday until 12:15pm on Monday, also prevented Android users from buying apps. Many users blamed the implentation of the related apps feature on the Android Market although Google hasn't made any public comment yet.
As of Monday afternoon the issue appeared to be resolved, with payments going through again, but throughout the weekend many developers took to Google's official support forums seeking help from the Android team and demanding compensation from Google.
Android developer Fouldsr said: "I have emailed (prospective buyers), but they may have now purchased alternatives. Probably lost a few hundred pounds, will Google compensate?"
We await comment from Google about what the actual issue was, but there's a lot of angry developers out there with some empty Christmas coffers.

BlackBerry PlayBook video demos new gesture features Posted: 06 Dec 2010 06:28 AM PST BlackBerry PlayBook target iPad success RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook, the company’s attempt at a true iPad competitor, has been demoed at a network event in Canada with a number of the tablet’s features shown off for the first time.
The demonstration, which was caught on video (below), highlighted the tablet’s impressive 1080p HD video playback capabilities and, despite running an early build of the device’s operating system and user interface, a slick two-style gesture control design.
With the BlackBerry Playbook expected to launch in spring 2011, just days ahead of the arrival of Apple’s muted iPad 2, the RIM tablet’s impressive spec sheet that includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and front and rear facing cameras, will be hard pushed to succeed in an increasingly congested tablet market.
Which tablet do you think will make the biggest impression upon launch next spring the BlackBerry PlayBook or iPad 2? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty: Black Ops replaces GT5 atop UK charts Posted: 06 Dec 2010 04:54 AM PST Gran Turismo demoted by FIFA and Assassin's Creed Call of Duty: Black Ops has returned to the top of the UK video game charts as last week’s leading title, Gran Turismo 5, falls in popularity to fourth position.
Activision’s dominant first person shooter has continued with its strong opening sales that broke all UK gaming records, easily surpassing the mark set by its predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year.
In a week of lackluster game launches, the week’s highest new entry was Donkey Kong Country Returns at number 13 followed by Super Mario All-Stars at 22. The expected Christmas hit, Michael Jackson: The Experience rose to number six in the charts having debuted at 32 last week.

White iPhone 4 to launch Spring 2011 Apple reveal Posted: 06 Dec 2010 04:11 AM PST Lighter toned iPhone arriving next year Having been put back as many times as Gran Turismo 5, the white rendition of the iPhone 4 has seemingly been given a launch date by Apple as in store signage pegs a Spring 2011 arrival.
Confirming a press release from the Cupertino company back in October, the new Stateside signage slates the lighter hued Apple blower with a post 2010 release quite clearly stating: "The white iPhone 4 will be available in spring 2011."
With Apple expected to stick to its strict annual product cycles and unveil the iPhone 5 in June 2011, a spring arrival of the white iPhone 4 would leave wannabe adopters with just a couple of months before their device became dated.
Do you think the white iPhone 4 will ever appear or will Apple focus its white shelling efforts on the upcoming iPhone 5? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Super-fast broadband across entire UK by 2015, says government Posted: 06 Dec 2010 02:15 AM PST Digital hubs in every community according to Culture Secretary. The government will today outline plans to bring super-fast broadband toe every community in the UK. The coalition says it plans for every area to have a so-called “digital hub”, which will give web users easy access to a fibre optic network.
While ISPs will help deliver two thirds of the network, the government will fund the final third from BBC licence fee funds. The state paid areas are likely to be rural parts of the UK that are hard to reach.
However, while Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt says this will give the UK Europe’s ‘best’ broadband network, the government’s strategy doesn’t exactly offer up specifics when it comes to how fast it will actually be.
The mealy-mouthed strategy report says, “In order to determine what constitutes 'the best' network in Europe, we will adopt a scorecard which will focus on four headline indicators: speed, coverage, price and choice. These will be made up of a number of composite measures rather than a single factor such as headline download speed." Ofcom currently considers 24Mbps to be the minimum for super-fast broadband.
Can the government hit this ambitious target? And is its failure to define how fast ‘super-fast’ is going to cause problems down the line? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Microsoft: we're not controlling Kinect shortages Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:51 AM PST "It's absolutely not a strategy," says UK Xbox boss. Microsoft’s insistence that punters nab Kinect early in order to beat Christmas demand has been derided in some quarters as an attempt to create even greater clamour for the best-selling gaming add-on.
But, according to the general manager of Xbox in the UK and Ireland, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Neil Thompson has launched a staunch defence of the Big M, saying such claims are well wide of the mark.
In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Thompson said, “It's absolutely not a strategy, we want to get the product into consumers hands as quickly as we can because we think its exciting, it's innovative. We wanted to do that for Christmas and that's what we've done.”
Thompson added, “Anyone who actually works in the business of producing new technology, especially hardware technology, will know that these things are never managed.” Whether this will stop gossip mongers remarking on his biss Don Mattrick’s comments about buying early, or Redmond’s convenient revelation that it had sold 2.5 million Kinects in 25 days, is up for debate.
What do you think? Is Microsoft managing demand? Or is Neil Thompson right to say there’s nothing untoward? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Android Market related apps land early Posted: 06 Dec 2010 12:14 AM PST Get hold of related apps on phones packing FroYo now. It had been assumed that Android Gingerbread’s imminent release would bring a much-needed ‘related’ apps tab to Android Market. But avid fans of Google’s OS can rejoice knowing that it’s already hit certain phones packing FroYo.
Owners of the Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One across the pond have already seen changes, although reports suggest the recommendation engine needs tweaking, with app advice not quite spot on.
That said, it’s a welcome and long-overdue arrival in the Android Market, so we’re willing to forgive a few niggles here and there.
Remember, you can get stacks of free Android apps thanks to our AppVent feature right here on T3.com. Got the new ‘related’ tab? Let us know how it’s working out for you on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
