3D TV to see faster adoption rate than HD claim Sony

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 08:48 AM PST

Sony predict 3D to take off in 2011

Adoption rates for 3D TV will eclipse the prolonged transitional switch from standard to high-definition units, a Sony head has claimed.

Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), announced his view on the early rise in extra dimensional technologies in the home during an interview with MCV. Looking ahead to 2011, House stated it would be the year 3D tech came “into fruition” adding: "3D is going to be driven by building an ecosystem that's based around content, TV penetration, and so on," he said.

"Rather than saying when the tipping point will be, I do think it will be a faster adoption than the shift from standard to high definition," announced the SCEE leader.

Despite describing Sony as “pioneers” and “evangelists” or the 3D home entertainment movement, House admits that the market is still heavily reliant on the availability of strong content. He said: "In the UK you are seeing a strong push by broadcasters like Sky, who see enormous potential in 3D. Their track record in driving HD penetration was key."

House went on to state: "I think the benefits of 3D are a lot more tangible in an interactive experience. It is also the one 3D experience that is, to a great degree, not replicable outside of the home.”

Do you think 3D technologies in the home will be adopted quicker than at what HD systems become the norm? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BBC iPlayer records 1.3 billion annual programme requests

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 07:41 AM PST

Aunties' catch-up reaches new heights

The BBC’s on-demand video catch-up service iPlayer has seen yet another record month in November with annual growth exceeding 32 per cent, new figures have revealed.

With 141 million TV and Radio programme requests made to Aunties' online catch-up service in November, two million more than the previous record set a month earlier; the BBC’s iPlayer has capped a sensational year that has seen in excess of 1.3 billion streaming requests.

Contributing to November’s success, The Apprentice, Merlin and Russell Howard’s Good News all performed strongly with special events such as Children in Need and the radio broadcast of the Haye vs. Harrison fight adding to the figures. November also saw an increase in iPlayer requests from internet connected TVs.

“Live TV viewing via the BBC iPlayer increased in November to make up 13 per cent of all requests, boosted by Children In Need and sport coverage. Live radio also grew slightly," said the BBC’s Bridget Middleton on the rise in internet connected TV use.

Daniel Danker, general manager, Programmes and On Demand, added: "BBC iPlayer has had a remarkable year - with well over 100 million requests for programmes each month of 2010 and over 1.3 billion programmes played through the year".

Skype issues continue as two thirds of users remain offline

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 06:21 AM PST

Skype remains affected by global outage

Voice over Internet Protocol system provider Skype has estimated that around two-thirds of its global users are still unable to use its services after underlying system issues caused a global outage yesterday.

The unexpected downing of Skype yesterday evening saw many of the services’ millions of users turn to Twitter to vent their frustrations with the official Skype Twitter feed interjecting: "Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype – we’re investigating, and we’re sorry for the disruption to your conversations".

Following from the issues which have now been partly rectified, a release on the official Skype blog today revealed further information about the outage with the global downtime reportedly being caused by problems with a number of supernodes, one of the system’s building blocks the company describes as being: “a bit like phone directories for Skype”

The blog post, released around midday today, claimed that although around 5 million users are back online and using the full array of Skype functions, this figure represents just 30 per cent of what would be expected for this busy period of festive communication.

In a hearty attempt to rectify the issues, Skype has stated: "Our engineers are creating new 'mega-supernodes' as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal."

Have you faced issues with the Skype service in the past couple of days? Share your experiences with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Bike Hub satnav for cyclists app comes to Android

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:51 AM PST

Download and beat the winter blues with a snowy two-wheeled adventures.

Bike Hub, a successful satnav app for cyclists, has now landed on the Android platform.

The app, which is free to download from the Android Market, includes turn-by-turn voice navigation and allows users to plot their two-wheeled adventures throughout the country, while keeping their phone in their pocket thanks to handy vibrations.

The app has been a major success since its launch on the iPhone in September, using route data from Cyclestreets and OpenCycleMaps, which comes from the OpenStreetMaps community resource. There's also information on cycle hire schemes, the ability to plot the fastest bike-specific routes and also  to save your favourite routes.

The Android app doesn't yet have the full array of features. Full satnav functionality and bike shop finder, along with news and events, will arrive in an update in January.

Motorola tablet to be named XOOM with Android 3.0

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:37 AM PST

First Android 3.0 tablet to be named XOOM

Having been used as a demo model for the upcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS and teased in a Tablet Evolution video, Motorola’s upcoming tablet release has seemingly been titled as the company registers a trademark for the name XOOM.

The trademark, which has been filed for use in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan and the whole of the EU, hints towards a global rather than regional product launch and is to cover “mobile computers and related accessories, namely, docks, cradles, mounts, holders, stands, carrying cases, covers, protective or decorative covers, batteries, power adaptors, cables, connectors, headsets and speakers; hand held computers, lap top computers, tablet computers, electronic notepads, computers, mobile data communications apparatus.”

Despite the XOOM moniker having yet to be confirmed for the Tegra 2 processor touting Motorola tablet that will launch at CES 2011 with an expected 10-inch display, all bases seem to be firmly covered by the filed patent.

The upcoming Motorola tablet was outed by Google’s Andy Rubin who took to stage of the first Android 3.0 preview event in San Francisco earlier this month, device in hand, to showcase what will become the first tablet-centric mobile OS from the internet and software giant.

With a number of Android powered mobile handsets now matching and possibly eclipsing the Apple iPhone 4, the hype and expectation that is being placed on the first Android 3.0 tablet, one which Motorola is proclaiming will “skip a generation”, could well be the first true competitor to the iPad.

Will the mooted Motorola XOOM match expectations and challenge the Apple iPad with a tablet friendly Android OS? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Nexus S: First OTA update goes live

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 02:45 AM PST

Android 2.3.1 available to our US brethren...

Not one to waste time, Google has already released an over the air update for the fledgling Nexus One. The handset, which has only been out in the US for a week and the UK for one day, has been gifted the update - the Android version 2.3.1 - in the US only, with a UK equivalent coming soon.

So what are we looking at? It’s admittedly not the big jump to Android Honeycomb that some might have wanted - the OTA update is fairly incremental, seeming to largely deal with fixing bugs with the Maps app. It’s hard for us to see exactly what, though, and reports from the states suggest that anyone who already has the 3D Google Maps for Mobile 5 app probably won’t notice a difference.

There’s no word on when the update will become available to us in the UK, but it’s good to know that it’s not exactly life changing. Have you got a Nexus S? Let us know how you’re finding it on the T3 Twitter feed.

PSP2: Sony boss hints at touchscreen

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 02:00 AM PST

Top Sony exec also talks briefly about the PlayStation Phone.

Sony’s top gaming boss, Kaz Hirai, has offered up some juicy morsels on what we can expect from the much-vaunted PSP2, as well as giving the biggest hint yet from an insider that a PlayStation Phone is in the works.

Talking about the PSP2, Hirai told The New York Times that there were a raft of possibilities for the handheld sequel. “There are games where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel. But you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads. I think there could be games where you're able to use both in combination.''

This would fit neatly in with spy shots which show a sliding form factor and even some kind of rear touchscreen for controlling games. However, Sony will need to get this one bang on the money after the failure of the PSPgo.

As for the PlayStation Phone, Hirai did not deny its existence, but said the Big S needed, “…a message that gamers would understand,” when explaining the difference between it and a regular PSP.

It’s pretty clear that Sony has some major handheld announcements in 2011. Whether we get both the PSP2 and PlayStation Phone in the same year remains to be seen.

LG Optimus 2X hitting UK in January

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 01:13 AM PST

Ringtone announcement contains juicy morsel on Euro availability.

Sure, getting movie score legend Ennio Morricone to make ringtones for the new Optimus 2X dual core is a smart move by LG. But when the announcement of the collaboration also contains deets on when us Brits can get one, let’s just say we’re happy with our bog-standard classic ringing number.

LG’s official announcement of the ringtone tie-up said that Morricone’s music would be on the Optimus 2X, with the phone, “…set to debut next month in Europe”.

That’s great news, especially as it had been assumed the phone would be a Korea-only affair for some time. The 4-inch Android phone promises to be an absolute powerhouse thanks to its dual-core skills.

iPad 2: smaller bezel, bigger speakers, flat back

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 12:07 AM PST

New speakers could explain why iPad 2 cases rock USB-sized opening.

The iPad 2 rumour mill doesn't rest for Christmas. Just a day after a pared down 7-inch version was apparently spotted in the wild, a new report from Japanese site Mac Ockakara has served up some more juicy details on what to expect from the next-gen Apple tablet.

It says that while the screen will stay the same size, the iPad 2 will be smaller than the original thanks to a less capacious bezel. Word is it’ll measure 239x186mm compared to the current 242.8x189.7mm size.

On top of that, the rear will be flat so it can sit flush on a surface, while a new speaker system at the bottom of the slate will allow for better sound. The latter is significant as it would go some way to explaining why leaked iPad 2 cases had a gaping hole next to the space for a dock connector.

For more iPad 2 gossip as we get it, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.
