Gmail for Android app gets major facelift

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 08:13 AM PST

Gmail revamp comes on a busy day for Google's mobile offering.

Google has issued a major update to its Gmail app for Android 2.2 handsets, implementing many of the features users have been hoping for.

The biggest change is an update to the Priority inbox, which means that all priority mails now have their own special inbox view.  There's also the option to send messages from multiple accounts for the first time.

It's now easier to reply all and forward messages thanks to a handy drop-down menu and you'll also be able to reply to messages inline. There's also improved message composition and it's a cleaner easier to use app in general.

The app is currently only available on Android 2.2 phones or higher, and will, naturally be available on the Google Nexus S, the first Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone out later this month.

The Gmail overhaul is the second piece of big news from Google mobile today. The search giant has added the instant search functionality to the Google.co.uk mobile site, which means results will appear as you type. On first glance, it's as good an experience as it is on your desktop. Bravo.

Released as a standalone app, Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift is now available as a free download for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad featuring 25 new Christmas-tinged levels as users are tasked with feeding craftily placed candies to a little green monster named Om Nom.

Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift is the latest in a series of Christmas-themed app releases following the wintry touches added to Rovio’s bird flinging mega app Angry Birds Seasons launched as a free app on Android handsets or as a paid option on iOs devices last week.

Weird News: C3P0 swimwear and CGI squirrels...

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 06:00 AM PST

This week's more eccentric tech happenings, in association with Asylum.co.uk

The C3P0 bikini
Star Wars merchandise cannot be stopped. It is self-aware, and has seeped into every perceivable facet of culture. The latest in the long line is swimwear, with a range of C3P0 and R2-D2 ladies aqua-garments. We’re not sure if any of the she-geeks buying these will look quite as good as the models, though.

Augmented reality T-shirts
Probably the best thing we’ve seen this week, this. Order yourself one of these swish AR T-shirts, don it in front of your webcam, visit the site and you’ll be treated to a bespoke video experience that stick to the screen on the shirt. It’s this kind of stuff that the web was invented for.

Tron 3D star doesn’t like 3D
Olivia Wilde, who stars in the new Tron: Legacy film, has spoken to T3 for this month’s Big Read, and let slip that she’s not the biggest fan of 3D in cinema. This probably wouldn’t be an issue, if it weren’t for the fact that the young lady is the star of a film shot almost entirely in 3D.

Crotchless pants – available now
We know exactly what you want for Christmas. It isn’t a new phone, camera, console or TV; it’s a pair of briefs with a hole through which your gentlemen’s bits doth dangle. Hang on… hear us out: science says that your outer regions need to stay cool, so there is method to the madness. Honest.

Scientists play dress up
Got a baby Panda? Yeah, thought so. If you want it to pay you the kind of respect that it would give an actual panda, scientists now – after years of research – have the anser: Dress up like a panda. It’s that kind of revolutionary thinking that’s keeping the species alive.

CGI squirrel quells alcoholism
Think public service announcements and you’ll probably think of those harrowing Think! campaigns about the perils of responsible drinking. Russia’s got a similar thing – only with a mental squirrel. As you do. Still, watching it probably won’t make you want a drink.

And finally…

The Wikileaks fiasco gets the Japanimation treatment

Nary a news story sneaks through these days without suffering a crude CGI makeover. There’s not a lot we can say about this, other than that it exists…

Mac App Store pushed back to January?

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

Release still falls within 90 day timeframe, but hopes of pre-Christmas launch dashed.

Like us, you were now doubt counting down the hours until 13 December, when you could fire up your Mac and chow down on thousands of pricey add-ons for your OSX machine courtesy of the all-new Mac App Store.

Well kids, it’s time to put your Mac away for now. Because new inside info suggests the Mac App Store will be pushed back until January. The Loop is claiming that a source has the store’s launch will now take place in the New Year. Admittedly that falls just inside Apple’s official 90 day timeline, but it dashes hopes of an early release.

What’s more, other gossip suggests devs have been told their apps will be severely limited in the Mac App Store. Word is there will be no Game Center support, free demos or in-app purchases, putting these add-ons well behind their mobile counterparts.

Gutted? Or happy to wait to ensure Apple gets the Mac App Store perfect first time? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Teen arrested over cyber-attack

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 02:55 AM PST

17-year old from Manchester caught doing some Black Ops of his own

A 17-year old computer hacker from Beswick in Manchester has been arrested under the Computer Misuse Act, after he’d managed to hack in to the CoD: Black Ops servers and tweak the rules.

The attack, known as a ‘denial of service’, used a program called a ‘Phenom Booter’ to alter the rules and allow some players to score highly while completely blocking others. The software was available to buy online through a CoD forum.

Metropolitan Police in the area have picked up the miscreant, issuing a statement that "these games attract both children and young people to the online environment and this type of crime can often be the precursor to further offending in more traditional areas of online crime."

Detective Inspector Paul Hoare said that "online gaming is a major retail sector with millions of titles being sold in the run-up to Christmas worldwide. Programs marketed in order to disrupt the online infrastructure not only affect individual players but have commercial and reputational consequences for the companies concerned.”

Still, if your choices as a teen these days are online hacking in your bedroom or smashing up buildings in London, it’s hard to see which is the better option.

New PlayStation Phone prototype video surfaces

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 02:35 AM PST

The PlayStation Phone 'Zeus Z1' saga continues

Footage of a PlayStation Phone prototype has emerged showing the device running on Qualcomm's Neocore benchmark app.

According to Engadget, the device which is also being referred to as the Zeus Z1, is shown to be averaging 24.4 frames per second in the video.

While this is unlikely to be the finished article, previous speculation suggests when the device does launch it will run on Android 2.3, and feature a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 8GB microSD slot, 512MB of RAM and a sizeable 4-inch display.

Earlier this week, sources within Sony Ericsson revealed that the PlayStation Phone would be available in March 2011, with outings at MWC 2011 and CeBit 2011 likely to give us our first official look at the gaming smartphone.

You can see the latest PlayStation Phone prototype video below.

iPad 2: more new cases emerge

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 01:12 AM PST

New shots and video predict iPad is set for new features in new year.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 case, which got the rumour mill in a tizzy thanks to a dedicated camera slot and an SD card-shaped hole, looks like it was just the start. A slew of new pics and video now show that there are more iPad 2 cases out there, all of which confirm Apple’s plans.

A new set of silicone cases, pictured here, show the same cut outs, with a camera hole in the top right hand corner and a rectangular cut away in the bottom right hand corner. Speculation is rife that this will be for an SD card or USB port, stymying the need for Apple’s dedicated adaptor which currently lets you upload files from both forms of storage.

What’s more, the Crystal Case for iPad 2, which kicked off this whole round of tittle tattle, has now been pictured in a video, which you can see down below.

Apple’s expected to unveil the iPad 2 early in the new year, with an April release date mooted. That means we’re in for a few more months of juicy leaks like this one. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

Google Places NFC stickers unveiled

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 11:57 PM PST

Getting a Nexus S? Then this is a feature you cannot miss out on.

The Nexus S’s NFC skills have been well documented. And Google is already aiming to up the tech’s popularity with a new set of NFC-packing stickers, currently being handed out in Portland, Oregon.

The idea is simple. Take your Nexus S up to the sticker, point it in its direction and you’ll be tagged in that very spot. No need to hop online and tell the world where you’re at, it’s just a simple case of whipping out your phone before the world and his wife knows your exact location.

Google says the idea is to give local businesses better exposure, as well as giving punters the chance to get user recommended places to hang out or spend cash.

There’s no word yet on when this trial will go global, but it’s pretty clear that NFC is fast becoming the hot new thing it’s been promising to be for years. Now, Apple, how about loading it up on that iPhone 5?

PlayStation Move 'sharp shooter' gun revealed

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 11:36 PM PST

New add-on coming a same time as Killzone 3.

Sure, that nifty little pistol you’ve been using with PlayStation Move is fun. But let’s face it: when you’re annihilating undead or picking off innocent bystanders, you want something a bit more heavy duty.

Hence Sony’s new ‘sharp shooter’ rifle add-on for Move. The new piece is due to land in April next year, coinciding with the release of Killzone 3. The Big S says the fake firearm packs, “…easily accessible buttons, responsive digital trigger, realistic pump-action, firing mode selector, adjustable shoulder stock and convenient access to the navigation controller”.

The sharp shooter is set to cost $39 (£24), when it hits shelves. And we can already see a string of men of a certain age taking cover behind the couch or poking their heads round the corner of doors to ensure they get that immersive experience Sony’s banging on about.

Fancy it? Or happy to stay slumped on your sofa, regular controller in hand? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
