Call of Duty: Black Ops update aimed at user requests

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 08:50 AM PST

Black Ops updates inbound for all platforms

The production studio behind the recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops game, Treyarch, has announced it is to closely follow gamer feedback when creating updates and patches for the hugely successful title.

Having once again claimed top spot in the UK All Format Gaming Charts, Black Ops’ creators are focussed on continuing to expand the record breaking release with studio head Mark Lamia stating: "Right now we are just focused on the PC and console skus that were just launched.”

Talking with Joystiq on his desire to follow user comments when creating fixes and additional content for the year’s highest grossing game release Lamia said: "The response that I've gotten is that people are happy with the game.” He went on to add: "There's millions of people playing every day, and we're focused on supporting that. So everyone who bought and is investing their time in Black Ops, they can expect that that's just how we work."

Eager to cement Treyarch as more than a bit-player in Activision’s rolling selection of Call of Duty developers Lamia said: "We've just got to stay focused on what we want, what we're making and our own creative, and that's really the best way to do your best work."

New title updates are reportedly being prepared for PS3, Xbox and PC rendition of the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise. What would you most like to see included in the imminent updates? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LG unveils its thinnest LED display at just 7.3mm thick

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 08:06 AM PST

LG hits the diet books ahead of New Year

LG has unveiled what will be its slimmest LED display to date measuring in at a meager 7.3mm thanks to an internal component filled base.

The 21.5-inch LG E2290V display with 1920 x 1080p full HD video playback features a super fast 2 milliseconds response rate, staggering 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and the company’s Super LED technology that reduces the display’s power consumption by up to 40 per cent over other CCFL-backlit models.

Designed with gamers and video users in mind to make full use of the high-end refresh rates, the LG E2290V stores all of its workings in the hefty silver base with the units power supply and connection socket located in the rear of the stand.

Announced for launch in Asia this month for $435 (£277), the super slim line LG E2290V is expected to hit European and US markets early in the New Year.

Apple openly allowing iPhone jailbreaks after API is removed

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 07:16 AM PST

Cupertino company waves white flag to jailbreakers

Apple appears to have conceded defeat in the battle with iPhone jailbreakers removing a key API (Application Programming Interface) that allowed the company to remotely check for jailbroken devices.

Whilst it has yet to be confirmed whether Apple has completely removed or simply disabled this section of monitoring code from the most recent iOS update, iOS 4.2, the apparent lack of the API follows confirmation from the US government that jailbreaking an iPhone is entirely legal.

Despite being a legal option open to all users, jailbreaking your iPhone is a process riddled with risks and potential gadget breaking problems. Apple branded handsets that have been jailbroken to run custom software are liable to security flaws, erratic battery life and a variety of other error that will not be covered by your voided warranty.

As well as posing threats to users’ handsets, the lack of Apple’s API in the current iOS offering is also potentially damaging to IT managers who currently use the API as a useful tool for monitoring iOS files corrupted by external security threats.

With the battle between Apple and handset jailbreakers having been a fiercely fought one for such a long time, we can’t see Apple simply holding up a white flag and backing down this easily and expect an API patch update to arrive shortly in iOS 4.2.1.

Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the omitted API and let us know via T3’s Twitter and Facebook feeds if you have fancy problems after jailbreaking your iPhone.

Twitter European HQ aimed at London following PM meeting?

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 06:21 AM PST

European Twitter HQ to hit Silicon Roundabout

Twitter executives have met with Prime Minister David Cameron and Mayor of London Boris Johnson recently as the micro blogging site considers London and the Silicon Roundabout for its upcoming European base.

The two leading politicians were joined by a range of Number 10 delegates for the personal meeting with Twitter executives that included the company’s Head of International Strategy Katie Jacobs Stanton. The government contingent was reportedly tasked with charming Twitter into setting up its planned European HQ within the city. A Number 10 source was quoted as saying: "All that matters is that they come to London."

The political pampering appears to have had its desired effect as Stanton later tweeted: "Hugely impressed with PM Cameron @MayorOfLondon & the @Number10gov teams." She added personalised sub 140-character comments of Cameron and Johnson describing the London Mayor as: “He is awesome! Smart, funny and big advocate of tech and innovation.”

With an official Twitter statement declaring: "We are considering London and other European locations to create an initial and small presence in 2011," PM David Camera appears to have changed his opinion of the social networking base after last year declaring he didn’t use the site though fear of slipping up. He said: "The trouble with Twitter, the instantness of it – too many twits might make a twat.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops retains UK gaming chart top spot

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:59 AM PST

Black Ops takes fourth title in five weeks

Call of Duty: Black Ops has retained its UK gaming chart crown as the phenomenally popular first person shooter takes the sales top spot for the fourth time in its five weeks since launch.

Dislodged for just one week by the arrival of the long overdue Gran Turismo 5, Black Ops has become a regular fixture atop the UKIE All Format Top 40 this week followed by the ever-present FIFA 11 in second and the week’s highest new entry World of Warcraft: Cataclysm rounding out the podium positions.

With Gran Turismo 5’s opening fortnight global sales having topped 5.5 million copies, the most realistic racing sim to date has seen its single platform constraints drop it to fifth in the UK charts, two places ahead of rival Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

The PC exclusive World of Warcraft: Cataclysm marks the first occasion that an expansion for the hugely successful role-playing game has been launched in solid state and digital download forms simultaneously.

Focus now shifts to which gaming release will top next week’s UKIE charts and ultimately take the title of Christmas Number One 2010. Which game do you think will be this year’s festive chart topper? Share your thoughts and predictions with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds

PS3 to get 4oD and ITV Player streaming services this week

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:43 AM PST

Deal will 'improve traffic by around 10 per cent'

Sony is set to bring online streaming services from Channel 4 and ITV to the PS3 this week, in a move that it hopes will prove mutually beneficial over the Christmas period. The deal will see 4oD and the ITV Player granted dedicated portals on the PS3’s dashboard, just as the BBC iPlayer has now.

ITV, which has up until recently been very closed off in terms of giving outside parties access to its content, says of the move that "as awareness of ITV Player grows, so will consumption of ITV's content on demand." ITV.com’s MD Robin Pembroke calls it an "acceleration of our distribution strategy.”

Sony, meanwhile, claim that the new services will benefit from a 10 per cent traffic increase over Christmas. UK Playstation MD Alan Duncan says it’s all about "changing people's attitudes to the PS3 as a platform, to view it as a much broader entertainment device. There is a compelling story to tell about the PS3 that goes far beyond gaming,” he added.

Good news, or should games consoles stick to being games consoles? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Gran Turismo 5 global sales top 5.5 million in two weeks

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:41 AM PST

GT5 opening fortnight sales top 5.5 million

More than 5.5 million copies of the ultra realistic PlayStation 3 title Gran Turismo 5 have been sold in the game’s opening two weeks, Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed.

Having been plagued by delays and repeated postponements prior to launch, the long awaited Gran Turismo 5 finally hit stores on November 24th to a mixture of praise a disappointment.

Whilst the racing simulator does undeniably look very impressive, its graphical quality was not enough to distract from a number of issues that saw online gamers facing repeated delays and the continuing of regular Gran Turismo pitfalls, poor AI and unconvincing crash physics.

With 5.5 million sales reportedly already in the bag, Sony and Polyphony Digital will now target the sales figures of previous Gran Turismo incarnations that, as a franchise, now top 60 million units. Leading GT sales is Gran Turismo 3 A-spec which has shifted 14.6 million units to date ahead of Gran Turismo 4 and the original Gran Turismo release with 10.86 and 10.81 million unit sales respectively.

Whilst these opening fortnight sales will be an encouragement to Sony following the issues faced getting Gran Turismo 5 to stores, it leaves the flagship PS3 releases eclipsed by Call of Duty: Black Ops which recorded 5.6 million global sales on its opening day before going on to break numerous global and national sales records.

Microsoft Kinect air guitar hack lets you shred thin air

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:37 AM PST

It's the next generation of music gaming

Not only is it outselling the PlayStation Move five to one, but the Microsoft Kinect has just added air guitar to its skills.

A video shows how the Air Guitar Prototype hack, Designed by Chris O’Shea, uses the Kinect camera to superimpose a guitar over your hands, leaving you to strum without having to hold a peripheral.

We’ll be the first to admit those on the video aren’t exactly making sweet music, but still, as a concept it makes Guitar Hero look positively antiquated.

What do you think? The future of music games? Let us know via Twitter or Facebook.

Kinect bundles battering Move

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:14 AM PST

Analyst claims Xbox 360 with Kinect outdoing PS3 with Move.

The battle for motion control supremacy this Christmas is reaching its climax. And with Sony and Microsoft trading blows when it comes to sales figures, the Big M appears to have received a boost from analyst extraordinaire Michael Pachter.

See, he claims that Xbox 360 console plus Kinect bundles are outselling PS3 plus Move bundles by a massive five to one. That suggests more people are buying an Xbox 360 specifically with Kinect in mind, helping the Big M become top dog in the casual games market.

Pachter also claimed that while a half of all Xbox 360 sales were as part of Kinect bundles, only a third of PS3 sales had a Move controller included in the box.

These are no doubt interesting stats. But we won’t know the full story until both players unveil their Christmas sales figures. Anecdotally it looks like Microsoft has it, but Sony’s clearly doing swift business too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Luxury Edition unveiled

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:15 AM PST

Nab one before end of January or you'll miss out.

Samsung has pulled the wrappers off of a new Luxury Edition of its Galaxy Tab at the Millionaire Fair in Amsterdam. But what exactly’s different when it comes to this newly-minted version of the undisputed number one Android slate?

Well, not much sadly. The package includes your standard Galaxy Tab, but with a special leather case and swanky Bluetooth headset. It’s on shelves now for €749 (£626). If you want one, you’d better hurry as Sammy’s killing off this luxury bundle on 31 January.

The Galaxy Tab has already smashed the million mark, with Samsung now hoping to flog 1.5 million of the iPad-rival before the end of 2010. This will doubtless convince monied types to help them reach that goal.

Worth it? Or just a needless cash-in? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

MLB beats Angry Birds as top grossing Apple iPhone app

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:00 AM PST

Take me out to the ballgame, buy me an iPhone app...

The MLB At Bat baseball app for iPhone and iPod touch has been named as the highest grossing application of the year in the annual iTunes Rewind section.

At Bat provides some fantastic covereage of America's national sport including live video and audio streaming of games and comprehensive news and highlights package.

The new At The Ballpark section included interactive features for those actually attending the game with fans able to 'Check-In' at the stadium and watch video highlights, access social media, as well as view the menus from the concession stand.

The app, which commands a yearly subscription fee of $14.99 for the entire baseball season, beat Angry Birds into second place, which at 59p a pop was the most downloaded paid app on the App Store this year.

Next up in the money-making category was was the Call of Duty: Zombies game, while Bejeweled 2, Plants vs Zombies, Tetris and TomTom also featured highly on the list.

Apple says the At Bat (which, in English, means batting) app was accessed a whopping 37 million times during the post season period and throughout the World Series. There's no news on exactly how much the app raked in for Major League Baseball and Apple though.

HP ups iOS AirPrint support

Posted: 12 Dec 2010 11:58 PM PST

Killer feature had been expected to work on shared printers via Mac or PC.

HP has added six new printers to its AirPrint line-up, courtesy of a spanking new firmware update. The feature, one iOS 4.2’s headline grabbers, was initially only supported by 12 ink spitters.

The new machines able to handle wireless AirPrint skills are all in the Officejet series: the 6500A e-Ai05, 6500A Plus e-AiO5, 7500A Wide Format e-AiO5, Pro 8500A e-AiO5, Pro 8500A Plus e-AiO5, Pro 8500A Premium e-AiO5.

This is welcome news for iOS 4.2 users, who had been hoping AirPrint would be a much bigger deal on launch. Apple said when it was unveiled that AirPrint would work with shared printers via Mac or PC. However, this was scrapped when iOS 4.2 finally went live.

Enough to make you buy a new printer? Or are you holding out for AirPrint to play nice via your home machine? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Motorola Android Honeycomb tablet poses for new pics

Posted: 12 Dec 2010 11:39 PM PST

Latest snaps show Verizon logo and epic screen on forthcoming Android effort.

Motorola’s much-mooted Android tablet has already been paraded in public by Google’s Andy Rubin. But now a slew of new spy pics have landed online, showing the Android 3.0 Honeycomb effort in all its glory.

As expected, it comes with a massive 10-inch screen, along with a Verizon logo, suggesting it’s being primed for the giant US mobile network.

Specs-wise, the tipster who handed over the snaps says this rocks a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, 32GB of storage, a 1280x800 pixel panel and a gyroscope. HDMI Mini and USB ports complete the set.

There’s still no news on an exact release date, but with Motorola planning to be on hand at CES in the first week of January, you can bet that this will be sitting pretty on its stand, just waiting for us to paw it.
