News@8pm: Gran Turismo 5 update and PSP Phone dated

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Sony Ericsson launches haven't been the biggest crowd draws or excitement starters in recent years but that could all be set to change as news hits of two upcoming SE arrivals that will get tech lovers in a twist. First off is the Sony Ericsson 16-megapixel camera phone that has leaked via FCC images with a massive snapper inbuilt. Following on from this and the PSP Phone or Sony Ericsson Z1 is back with news of a April launch to follow a February Mobile World Congress unveiling. Fingers crossed these reports produce the real deal.

Gaming updates land on a daily basis but today saw enhancements to two of the moments' biggest games as GT5 and Angry Birds for iPad both get a little something extra. Whilst the Angry Birds iPad Edition has added 15 new levels, Gran Turismo 5 has been on the receiving end of a massive 608MB update with new online gaming modes, rewards systems and online dealerships being added to the already giant game release.

Google's Android OS continues to take chunks out of every other facet of the mobile market but has suffered a day of mixed fortunes today. Whilst it was revealed that the HTC Wildfire is to finally be on the receiving end of an Android 2.2, FroYo, update, the launch of the first Android 2.3, Gingerbread, device, the Samsung made Google Nexus S, has been put back until, well, tomorrow, December 22nd.

CES 2011 tablets are already beginning to raise their heads despite the Consumer Electronics Show not kicking off until early next month. One such tablet to be teased early is the already demoed Motorola tablet. Used by Google's Andy Rubin to demo Android Honeycomb earlier this month, the Motorola tablet has been teased in a future of tablets video that, in a variety for the tech industry, is quite funny. Elsewhere on the CES tablet front and NEC is believed to be prepping an Android powered dual-screen tablet to launch in Las Vegas.

Apple TV sales to top 1 million mark before Christmas

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:00 AM PST

Apple's pet project finally finds its feet

Apple has announced that it expects the recently released second generation Apple TV to top the 1 million global sales mark later this week.

Having dropped to a quarter of the size and a fraction of the price of its predecessor during the annual iPod update event in September, the new Apple TV has seen greatly improved consumer interest across the globe following launch.

More famed for its range of iPods, iPhones and the iPad, Apple has revealed that the latest Apple TV arrival has seen video rentals and purchases from the iTunes Store rise dramatically with TV shows now topping 400,000 daily downloads whilst movies exceed the 150,000 mark.

Running iOS, Apple TV allows users to stream video and music content from the iTunes Store, Macs and PCs and via video on-demand services such as Netflix, YouTube and Flickr direct to TVs. Unlike the original model, the latest Apple TV unit does not feature any in-built media storage.

Have you already splashed out on Apple TV or plan to do so ahead of the Christmas period? Share your thoughts on Apple’s ‘pet project’ via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PSP Phone launch scheduled for April after MWC unveiling

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:25 AM PST

Sony PSP Phone about to enter the realms of reality?

Having failed to materialise at an expected launch event earlier this month the heavily rumoured Sony PSP Phone, known as the Sony Ericsson Z1, is to hit stores in April following a Mobile World Congress unveiling, reported inside sources have revealed.

Pocket-lint claims that “sources close to the matter” have confirmed that the Android powered PSP Phone is to be officially unveiled at the Barcelona based phone show in February yet “won’t be out until April in the UK.”

The unnamed source reportedly said: “Sony Ericsson is going big on this one”, adding, “although it will get a Feb launch, it won’t be in shops until April”.

A mooted Sony PSP Phone has been a key talking point in the tech world for a number of years now with speculation and expectation kicking into higher gear in recent months as a number of spy shots and reported hands-on leaks have emerged.

Having failed to out the PSP Phone at the rumoured December 9th launch in Paris recently, Sony officially launched a PlayStation app for both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to remotely track their PSN stats and seemingly quashing hopes of a PSP Phone arrival.

Will the repeatedly rumoured yet never appearing PSP Phone finally rear its head at MWC 2011? Let us know what you think and whether the PlayStation branded device would live up to the hype via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony Ericsson 16-megapixel camera phone spotted in leak

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 04:38 AM PST

Upcoming Sony Ericsson phone spotted leaving FCC

A 16-megapixel camera touting Sony Ericsson handset has been spotted having cleared the FCC checks hinting towards an early 2011 launch.

Believed to be Japan bound initially the yet unnamed Sony Ericsson camerphone is seemingly set to once again up the megapixel wars anti with its whopping 16-meg snapper wrapped around a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and what appears to be a touchscreen interface with portrait slide-out mobile keyboard.

Whilst the accompanying images of the upcoming Sony Ericsson device might show a less than attractive, slightly dated handset, the leaked unit is reportedly waterproof and features a backlit sensor allowing for high-quality low-light shots to be taken. It will reportedly forgo the likes of Android and Windows Phone 7 and run a proprietary Sony Ericsson OS.

Other known specs of the 16-megapixel cameraphone see the device packing the usual array of inbuilt Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity as well as the now standard microSD slot. It is not currently known, when, or if, the spotted handset will make it to UK shores.

Is a 16-megapixel camera in a mobile phone handset overkill? Share your thoughts of the super snappy Sony Ericsson with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on its potential UK arrival.

Apple removes WikiLeaks app from App Store

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:54 AM PST

First Jobs bans porn, and now democracy-aiding app falls to Apple's Utopian vision.

Apple is getting a little political with its App Store censorship lately, the other week it booted out an app protesting against gay marriage, and now, perhaps more crucially, it has risked the ire of WikiLeaks by canning its iPhone app.

The app, which for $1.99, provided access to the leaked Embassy cables that caused all the recent hoo-ha and saw internet service providers such as Amazon throw the site of their servers.

The WikiLeaks app only went up on 17th December, but now it is nowhere to be seen with no explanation from Apple as to why it chose to pull it.

It represents a pretty ballsy move from Apple. Does the company really want WikiLeaks 'hacktivists', so enraged by the site's treatment from the online gatekeepers in recent weeks, snooping around the Cupertino servers and potentially uncovering some embarrassing secrets?

The app hadn't exactly garnered top reviews, with many downloaders criticising it for a lack of depth, but that doesn't alter the fact. Apple has joined the growing number of highly influential web bods to declare war on WikiLeaks.

Gran Turismo 5 update brings new online game modes

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:50 AM PST

GT5 on the receiving end of 608MB update

Following a delay hit launch further rocked by a number of emerging issues, ultimate racing simulator Gran Turismo 5 is to be on the receiving end of a hefty update, developer Polyphony Digital has announced.

Available now, Gran Turismo 5 update 1.05 will fill users’ hard drives with 608MB of driving enhancing goodness with new online racing modes, dealerships and rewards points systems set to be introduced to the PS3 exclusive title.

Currently sixth in the UKIE All Format gaming charts, Gran Turismo 5 launched last month following five years and $60 million in development. Since its arrival, however, the long awaited release has repeatedly been criticised for its mixed range of standard and high-end vehicles, poor damage models and online access issues.

One key introduction to the latest Gran Turismo 5 title through update 1.05 is the arrival of ‘Seasonal Events’ that, as the name might suggest, will allow gamers to compete in official online events created by the Polyphony Digital team during seasonal, time-relative points of the year. A new Online Dealership will also offer users the chance to find a variety of popular and rare used vehicles which they are struggling to locate through their own offline dealerships.

Other features introduced by update 1.05 include a new rewards and experience points system for online modes, the renaming of the Red Bull branded prototype vehicle Red Bull X1 to the Red Bull X2010, and a new race information display.

With a full list of GT5 update 1.05 additions outline on the official GT5 website here, we want to know what features you think are still missing from the Polyphony produced racing release? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola Tablet video: Android Honeycomb primed for CES

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:39 AM PST

New tablet set for unveiling at January tech expo

Motorola seems to be fairly confident in its upcoming tablet device, as its splashed out some serious cash on a teaser video that in the same breath calls the iPad “a big iPhone” and slates the Samsung Galaxy Tab for running an OS designed for a phone.

The video is a teaser, priming the audience for a grand tablet unveiling at January’s CES. That’s about all we know at the moment – Moto is keeping things literally under wraps – but we do know that the crux of the new device’s USP will be its use of the Android 3.0 operating system.

3.0, otherwise known as Honeycomb, is said to be a big departure for the platform due to being much more tablet-friendly than previous iterations. Check out the video below to get a glimpse of what Motorola has in store…

NEC also claims that the dual screen tablet will be able to run different applications on individual screens at the same time.

There's no images available of the device in action at the moment, but more details will be revealed at CES which kicks off on January 5th. The T3 team will be in full force in Vegas next month to make sure you get a closer look at the NEC tablet offering.

Google erases all of the UK wi-fi data

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 11:51 PM PST

Google promised to delete all the data it collected. And it did.

The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has confirmed that Google has deleted all personal information collected in the UK through its Street View cars.

Google had erroneously collected personal information through unsecure wi-fi networks through its Street View vehicles.

The BBC was told by Google: "We can confirm that the UK data has now been deleted, and that this has been independently certified."

The erasing process was carried out by a third-party, Stroz Friedberg.

Google was found guilty of breaching UK data laws by the ICO by inadvertently collecting private data such as emails and passwords, and vowed to delete the data within 9 months. The Street View cars are back on the streets of the UK...and remember, if we don't like them, we could just move.

Are you glad to not hear of the Google Street View saga anymore or do you not care? Post your thoughts on the matter over at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for all your techie news.

Google Nexus S release delayed to 22 December

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 11:00 PM PST

We can hope for a Nexus S Christmas yet!

While Carphone Warehouse had last week shown the Google Nexus S as in-stock for an all-too-brief period, the latest update is that the Nexus S' release will be delayed.

The Google Nexus S had its price slashed in the UK to £429.95 SIM-free, as T3 reported; however the coveted handset will not be available until three days before Christmas.

Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy will be selling the Google Nexus S from 22 December onwards, which leaves little time for Christmas shoppers to get their hands on the handset.

TechRadar reports Carphone Warehouse as saying, "Due to strong customer interest, limited stock will be available to buy direct at key Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy stores in the UK."

Other branches will take orders allowing customers to pick up the phone from a store of their preference.

In addition, early birds who pre-ordered the phone before its price drop will be availing of the new price.

There are still three days to get the handset from the time of its release - here's hoping the weather doesn't leave us Nexus-less at Christmas.

Have you ordered the Google Nexus S already? Tell us what you think of the phone via T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for the latest tech news.
