Exciting new apps are a regular thing as the fledgling market continues to boom on all fronts. Adding to it today are two absolute doozies. First off we have the official PlayStation app. No, not a replacement for the failed to emerge PSP Phone but a game and stat tracking app linking users to their PSN credentials. After that we have Word Lens, a truly magical augmented reality app that will translate words you happen to point your iPhone at.

Future release news is what gets us excited here in T3 Towers and today we have two very exciting morsels to bring you. First off we have word from RIM that the BlackBerry Playbook tablet is targeting a March arrival. Following on from the expected iPad competitor and we will be seeing a range of new Windows Phone 7 handsets launching in February as Acer and Lenovo look to get in on the act.

World's first stereoscopic 3D website goes live

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 08:10 AM PST

Is this the future of the internet?

What is dubbed as the ‘world’s first 3D website’ has been launched with users needing a 3D capable TV, compatible browser and a pair of active shutter extra dimensional specs in order to enjoy the content.

Unlike sites such as YouTube which have been offering 3D content for some time, stereoscopic-3d.co.uk, created by Sunderland based Stereografix, features a 3D interface as well as additional content. The site proudly proclaims: “We think the Stereoscopic 3D Web is probably the world’s first 3D website. It is designed to be viewed exclusively on the new generation of Stereoscopic 3D HD TVsets.”

Speaking on his company’s forward thinking achievement, Sterografix founder Saif Chaudhry said: "I don't think many people are even thinking this far ahead, and we've got a prototype already. It's not every day you can say you're first with something where the internet is concerned.”

He added: "I think there needs to be a lot more 3D TVs and computer monitors out there before it becomes mainstream, but people aren't just going to go out and buy these things unless they've got something to show on them."

What web content would you like to see transformed in to a 3D ready format? Share your ideas with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News Tron Playboy and Google Earth skydiving

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 07:34 AM PST

Also stimulating new uses for Microsoft Kinect.

Tron: Legacy gets sexy Playboy treatment

Fans of Tron: Legacy star and recent T3 interviewee Olivia Wilde that we are at T3 Towers, we found the lightcycle-riding, tight-catsuit-sporting 2010 Tron sequel quite sexy enough without Playboy re-imagining starring Playmates. Which isn't to say we won't be investigating this racy reimagining anyway. Journalistic responsibility, and all that.

Japanese skydive using Google Earth

There are all sorts of good reasons to go skydiving: charity, overcoming a fear of heights, escaping from a burning plane, etc. There are also all sorts of good reasons not to go skydiving, most involving death. So bravo for the Japanese students who hung themselves in harnesses six feet off the ground and screamed as a floor-projected Google Earth raced up at them. They even have a guy on cloud-duty, who steps in periodically to blast them with a fire extinguisher for extra realism. Brilliant.

School kids "addicted" to Call of Duty: Black Ops

A school in Wokingham has been the first to warn parents that their offspring may be becoming addicted to video games like Call of Duty: Black Ops by hosting a seminar entitled "Addiction to Online Games and Social Networking". Turns out the little tykes were just holding the games for a friend.

Swedish airforce takes a fighter jet sledding

As Britain grinds to a halt under literally milimetres of snow,  the Swedish airforce are celebrating their "adverse weather conditions" by lashing sleds to the back of one of their fighter jets and dragging themselves around like Scandinavian Biggles. The jet never takes off, though, because that would be dangerous.

Kinect porn arrives on Xbox 360

It was only ever a matter of time. Veteran purveyors of perversity Thrixxx are the first adult entertainment company to take advantage (geddit?) of Microsoft's motion-tracking Kinect add-on for Xbox 360, using hacks created by in the Kinect community to allow users to fondle virtual ladybits with their own hands. Sort of.

Android 3.0 postponed as Honeycomb to launch as 2.4

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 07:17 AM PST

Honeycomb to be a 0.1 update

The next rendition of Google’s Android mobile operating system, Honeycomb, is to launch in February as Android 2.4 not Android 3.0 as previously thought, new rumours have suggested.

Demoed on the upcoming Motorola tablet by Google’s Andy Rubin recently, Honeycomb, which will feature a more tablet friendly UI, is believed by Android and Me to be preparing for launch at Mobile World Congress 2011 as nothing more than a 0.1 generation update.

The source for this unexpected revelation is a third party Android working software developer who, according to Android and Me, “wish to remain anonymous, but I can say they have provided me accurate information in the past and I consider them trustworthy.”

Although somewhat of a surprise that Honeycomb might not be released as Android 3.0, a moniker Google is seemingly saving for a heftier release, it was previously believed that the Android 2.3 OS, Gingerbread, would launch as 3.0. Released earlier this month and currently restricted to the Google Nexus S handset, Gingerbread is expected to roll out across a range of compatible handsets in the coming weeks.

Whilst Google has yet to declare exactly what version of its mobile OS Honeycomb will be, the internet and software giant has already outed the codename name of its follow-up release, with focus now turning to Ice Cream possibly touting the 3.0 label.

What features would you like to see brought to Android handsets and tablets in the awaited 3.0 edition? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook shuts down after staff leak future projects

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 06:21 AM PST

Leaked prototypes see Facebook hit the skids and disappear

Social networking sensation Facebook was brought to its virtual knees yesterday as the site was briefly pulled down following and accidental internal leak.

Downed for almost half an hour, the internet phenomenon was essentially switched off after a member of staff accidentally released a number of product prototypes in to the public domain with redesigned brand pages, a revamped photos section and page management features all outed.

One of the prematurely exposed features, dubbed “memories” showed off an upcoming indexing of users’ Facebook histories in which online activity is transformed into a chronological timeline.

Following the social blackout, a statement was released on the official Facebook blog reading: "For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally." It went on to add: As a result, we took the site down for a few minutes. It's back up, and we apologise for the inconvenience."

With well over 500 million global users, the Facebook switch off, which came just days after founder Mark Zuckerberg was named Time Magazine's Person of the Year, didn’t go unnoticed by its avid user base. Whilst some questioned the site’s disappearance others made light of the situation with one widely circulated tweet proclaiming: "Facebook is down. Half the world population had suddenly become productive. The other half of the population is using Twitter.”

Did you notice the Facebook fallout? Let us know what features you would like to see leaking into Facebook in the near future via T3’s very own Facebook page. Alternatively you can catch us on Twitter if so inclined.

Call of Duty: Black Ops leading student addiction

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 03:59 AM PST

School appeals to parents to help in video game addiction

A comprehensive school in Wokingham has issued a call of action to parents after student addiction to video games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops was deemed of unmanageable proportions.

St Crispin’s School has written to parents following an e-safety assembly entitled ‘Addiction to Online Games and Social Networking’ in which pupils admitted to playing the latest COD release for up to 23 continuous hours.

The letter, which was sent to the households of each pupil, read: “We would ask for your support in ensuring that the boys are aware of the dangers associated with devoting too much of their leisure time to playing the game.”

The school’s Assistant Headteacher and head of e-safety and ICT, Mike Elward, stated: “Clearly the letter did strike a chord with a number of the parents. We have had a number of calls back to us saying ‘thank you, it has given us an opportunity to have a chat with our children’.” He went on to outline the concerns of students playing games of such a physically violent nature and the effect this prolonged exposure has on video games.

Affects of video games on young people has long been a subject of conflict with the games industry repeatedly denying any form of harm is caused by exposure to game releases. Do you think schools should involve themselves in the gaming habits of pupils? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

New Windows Phone 7 phones coming February

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

Insiders claim slew of new phones being primed.

It’s certainly not the most shocking story of the year, but it appears Microsoft is lining up its second batch of Windows Phone 7-packing mobiles for Mobile World Congress next year.

The annual mobile bash, which kicks off in February in Barcelona, will apparently see Acer’s new E600 lead the line, with insiders telling Digitimes that other mobile makers will also be plying new WP7 wares.

On top of that, the Big M is looking to get a string of new manufacturers on board, including Lenovo and ZTE, in preparation for a lucrative WP7 debut in China.

Windows Phone 7 is ace, but its sales figures have not been anywhere near what would have been expected. Unofficial stats have pointed to a sluggish start, with Microsoft’s new OS failing to match up to rivals Android and iOS.

Enough to make you wait for a new WP7 phone? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 'clone' caught on video with new iPhone design

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 02:57 AM PST

iPhone 5 to get new design?

A ‘clone’ of the upcoming Apple iPhone 5 has appeared outing what is claimed to be the new form factor of the next-gen Apple handset.

Whilst the fruity tech giant has yet to confirm that the iPhone 5 is in the works, the company’s rigid annual product cycles should see the much mooted device announced around June of next year.

Despite having given the iPhone a massive design overhaul earlier this year for the arrival of the iPhone 4, the signal loss issues that plagued the device upon arrival could well see Apple opt for yet another look with Chinese website M8cool claiming the snapped and videoed device below is how version 5 of the Cupertino blower will look.

Looking little more than an amalgamation of the 3GS and 4, the leaked iPhone 5 clone features squared-off edges with a slightly curved rear shell. Whilst we are highly sceptical as to the legitimacy of M8cool’s release, we would not be surprised to see the iPhone 5 adopting a dramatically different design form come launch in mid-2011.

The first claimed appearance of the iPhone 5, M8cool’s rumours follow repeated speculation as to what features the next gen Apple smartphone will boast with a Toshiba-produced LCD display, NFC technology, integrated SIM and inbuilt FM radio receiver all currently being touted.

What features would you like to see packed into the expected Apple iPhone 5? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest rumour and fact surrounding Apple’s next handset.

Nokia sues Apple in UK

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 02:12 AM PST

Claims that Espoo was behind touchscreen tech used in iPhone as war of words hots up.

The legal squabbling between Nokia and Apple shows no sign of abating, with the Finnish phone maker yesterday filing lawsuits here in the UK, as well as in Germany and the Netherlands.

Nokia is accusing Apple of breaking 13 patents, in addition to 24 others about which it is has already filed lawsuits across the pond in the US.

The Finns claim that they are behind tech including, “…using a wiping gesture on a touch screen to navigate content, or enabling access to constantly changing services with an on-device app store, both filed more than ten years before the launch of the iPhone”.

Apple is already suing Nokia here in Blighty, with these further claims expected to push both sides towards a hefty out-of-court settlement. Either way, it seems there’s no love lost between ailing giant Nokia and the hard-hitting Apple.

Word Lens app translates using augmented reality

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 01:27 AM PST

Officially the world's best pocket translator.

They're wonderful things these smartphones aren't they? A new app for iPhone allows confused souls on foreign soil to point their camera lens at the lingo on signs and have it translated back into the Queen's English in the flash of an eye.

The Word Lens app for iPhone translates in real time without the need for a Wi-Fi and data connection by using an in-app dictionary. It's like a cross between Google Translate and Google Goggles and judging by the video below, it works absolutely brilliantly.

The translations aren't perfect - think Babelfish - but will allow you to get the gist and make sure you don't end up wandering into the ladies by accident. It can't recognise handwriting, but  with signs and printed text, you're good to go.

it's free to download from the App Store, but language packs cost £5. So far it can only do Spanish to English and vise-versa but more languages are on the way. This looks like a very, very impressive application.

LG B: super-bright Android phone spied

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 11:54 PM PST

New blower comes just a day after 2X Dual-Core phone officially unveiled.

LG’s already upped its Android game this week with its new 2X Dual-Core blower, unveiled in Korea yesterday. And now another sleek new effort packing Google’s mobile OS has slipped out online.

Dubbed the LG B, its big draw is undoubtedly its super bright screen. The pic here shows it sitting between an iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S, both phones noted for their peeper-friendly panels.

But it’s not just the 4-inch screen that’s impressive. The LG B appears to be thinner than both of its aforementioned rivals, a massive achievement considering how slinky the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S are.

There’s no word on when the LG B will break out officially. But with CES just a couple of weeks away, don’t bet against seeing it at the world’s biggest gadget show. For more, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

BlackBerry PlayBook: RIM points to March release

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 11:37 PM PST

Earnings call chatter suggests PlayBook will land by March.

Gossip about the BlackBerry PlayBook’s release date has been rife in recent weeks, with RIM’s top execs all pointing to a release in the first quarter of next year.

And while that date hasn’t changed, some new deets have come to light after a RIM earnings call. The BlackBerry maker said it, “...expects the first revenue impact from PlayBook will be in RIM's first quarter.”

Now, RIM’s first financial quarter actually begins in March when, of course, the first calendar quarter ends. So it’s a good bet we’ll be seeing the sleek iPad rival head to shelves, in the States at least, by then.

By then, the iPad 2 will be official and slapped with its own release date. So expect RIM to go hard in promoting its slate when it does finally head into the wild.
