News@8pm: iPad 2 rear camera confirmed and PSP 2

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple iPad 2 rumours are all the rage at present with today’s fill giving with one hand whilst taking away with the other. Whilst we disappointingly learnt Apple has decided against an OLED display for the second gen tablet in favour of a backlight option, a leaked iPad 2 case has all but confirmed the device will feature a rear-facing camera when it launches early next year. On the iPhone gadget blinger Stuart Hughes has revealed a £40,000 iPhone 4 created with a T-Rex tooth.

Mobile App development might well be a booming industry at present but it is a market that is exciting some and angering others. Whilst on the positive front celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has declared his love for apps dubbing the smartphone fillers “more brilliant than books”, charitable organisations are angered by Apple’s refusal to incorporate in-app donations to iOS based apps. If you are an app fan head on over to the T3 AppVent calendar for your daily chance to win free apps.

Google’s Android dominates headlines and apparently users hearts as it was today revealed more than 300,000 Android powered devices are activated every day. These hoards of Android users will have even more to smile about shortly especially if they sport a HTC handset as the Taiwanese manufacturer announces a number of its devices are to receive the Android 2.3 update shortly.

Future tech news is always a tantalising prospect and today got two exciting new contenders. Samsung is reportedly working on a 10-inch Windows Phone 7 tablet with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard whilst the long awaited PSP 2 is reportedly to boast PS3 quality graphics when it eventually launches.

Apple iPad 2 case confirms rear-camera inclusion

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 08:52 AM PST

iPad 2 case hints at rear camera and increased connectivity

As the rumour mill continues to grind out iPad 2 related speculation, images have appeared of what is reportedly an iPad 2 case, all but confirming rear-camera inclusion for the upcoming tablet.

The ‘Crystal Case for iPad 2nd Generation’ has appeared from Chinese accessories manufacturer Shenzhen MacTop Electronics featuring an aperture ready for a rear-facing camera similarly positioned and sized to that found on the iPhone.

Looking fit to support a device slightly slimmer than the currently available iPad, the claimed iPad 2 case appears to have a cutaway area allowing for easy access to additional connectivity options. Whilst it is strongly hoped that the second gen iPad will sport a USB port, many industry experts had ruled out its inclusion on the much mooted device as Apple favour its seamless design characteristics.

Although the iPad 2 is believed to be a number of months away from entering the realms of reality, the Crystal Case for iPad 2nd Generation has offered a potentially tantalising insight into the expected Apple tablet.

Will the iPad 2 include a USB port and rear-facing camera? Share your predictions with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the upcoming Apple tablet.

Jamie Oliver declares apps 'more brilliant than books'

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 07:53 AM PST

Apps better than books says TV chef

Celebrity chef and all-round pukka guy Jamie Oliver has spoken out on his love of mobile applications dubbing the smartphone fillers "more brilliant than books".

Discussing his app habits at Apple’s London Regent Street store, Jamie Oliver declared creating an app was “like having your own market stall” before adding: "Apps are so much more brilliant than books." His announcement came just hours before it was revelead his most recent book '30-Minute Meals' has become the fastest selling non-fiction title of all time shifting 735,000 copies in just 10 weeks.

Despite his app preference Oliver’s latest iPhone release, Jamie’s Recipes, has received a mixed user reaction following its launch late last month. Much like the T3 iPad App, Jamie’s Recipes is a free to download application that offers users a variety of purchasable in-app content. Despite being rated visually and physically impressive, Oliver’s new app release has faced repeated criticism for its potentially misleading ‘free app’ wording.

Talking on this recent application launch, the TV cook announced: “We just wanted to make something beautiful that delivers.”

Giving his views on the future of mobile applications, Oliver expressed his opinion on the rapidly progressing medium stating: “The app that we did last year was great but in two years time it won’t be.” Despite this constantly evolving format the Naked Chef was keen to add: “Apps are more future proof than any other sort of broadcasting or publishing that is around now.”

Apple ban on app donations riles charities

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 07:02 AM PST

Does Apple know it's Christmas time at all?

When folks in the olden days spoke of spreading good will to all men, Apple obviously wasn't listening. The App Store doesn't allow charities to include a donation option in their apps and now non-profit organisations are using the festive season call them out on it.

Many recognised charities across the world have iPhone apps nestling in the App Store, packed full of information, but none of them allow interested parties to make a donation.

If users want to help the charity out they need to go through the cumbersome process of leaving the app and negotiating their way through web links, which are often poorly optimised for smartphones.

In protest Beth Kanter, author of "The Networked Nonprofit" has told her 360,000 Twitter followers that she's ditching her iPhone for an Android handset.

She said: "When you’re popped out of an app, you then have to go through a whole bunch of clicks to make a donation. "It’s cumbersome and it doesn’t have to be."

Apple declined to comment on exactly why they refuse to accept donations, but a spokeperson said: "We are proud to have many applications on our App Store which accept charitable donations via their websites."

In the past, Apple has allowed American Red Cross donations through iTunes, but when PayPal added a donate option to its App, the Cupertino company demanded that it be removed. Come on Apple, spread a little Christmas cheer...

iPhone 4 given luxury £40,000 makeover with T-Rex tooth

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 06:38 AM PST

Apple blower walks with the dinosaurs

Stuart Hughes, the man behind the £5 million limited edition diamond-encrusted iPhone 4, has unveiled his latest Apple adaptation, an iPhone 4 with embedded Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth.

The ‘luxury electronics designer’ combined the section of 65 million year old dinosaur gnasher with polished meteoric rock to create an Apple product that not only screams importance but is literally out of this world.

Adding are air of elegance to the prehistoric styled gadget, Hughes has adorned the Flintstones-esque blower with a diamond and platinum crafted Apple logo and edged by an array of flawless 8.5 carat diamonds.

Whilst the dino-touting design might not be as elegantly brash as its £5 million diamond-clad predecessor, Hughes’ 10 History Edition iPhone 4s are expected to sell for £39,995 a piece.

Samsung Windows 7 tablet primed

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 03:25 AM PST

'Gloria' set to come with slideout keyboard.

Samsung is working on a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet according to a report from French site Blogeee. The new slate will not only pack Microsoft’s full-on OS, but also come with a slide out keyboard, testing the definition of tablet to the max.

Dubbed the Samsung Gloria, the new effort will sit alongside the Galaxy Tab in Sammy’s slate stable. The pic shown here is a mock-up, but should give you an idea of what the Korean gadget maker is working on.

There’s no news as yet on what features this will cram in. Windows 7 has not been the first choice for tablets, with HP’s disappointing effort failing to set the world alight after its airing at CES back in January.

Microsoft planning Windows 8 with 3D UI, says source

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 03:06 AM PST

...But it'll probably only be on the top spec Windows packages

A source close to Microsoft has lifted the lid on some Windows 8 features, despite Windows 7 only being a year into its lifespan. The source has told Italian website Windows 8 Italia that the current ‘Aero’ UI on Windows will be dropped in favour of ‘Wind’.

The Wind interface will be fully 3D and completely customisable, although there’s not much detail beyond that. What we do know is that a 3D OS will likely be a train on lesser machines.

The leak claims that your machine will need 170mb of video memory set aside for the thing, which means the 3D features may well be limited to the 64-bit Windows 8 package – for higher-end users. Would you be keen on a power-hungry 3D interface? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

PSP 2 with PS3 quality graphics touted

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:55 AM PST

More PSP 2 specs rumours emerge

The PSP 2 is set to boast graphics close to those seen on early PS3 titles according to a source who claims to have already spent some time with Sony's next portable games console.

Speaking to IGN, the unnamed source claims that the PSP 2 will have enough processing power to deliver PS3-like graphics but did not reveal what kind of clock speed we can expect.

There was also details regarding other key PSP 2 specs including PSP Go-like dual anlog sliders, front and rear-facing cameras, a larger touch enabled display, and a rear-mounted touch panel which will respond to taps, swipes and other gestures.

Following in the footsteps of the PSP Go, downloadable games will be the preferred format as opposed to the resurrecting the UMD drive from early iterations of the PSP.

With the latest rumours suggesting the PlayStation Phone could launch in March 2011, the arrival of the PSP 2 should make it an extremely busy next 12 months for Sony.

LG backtracks on Optimus Android updates

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:11 AM PST

Korean rows back on yesterday's claim that Optimus One couldn't run Gingerbread.

LG has moved to stem the growing tide of confusion surrounding the upgrade of its best-selling Optimus One blower to Android Gingerbread.

Yesterday the Korean tech cobbler claimed that because of hardware constraints, the Optimus One would not be getting the all new version of Google’s OS, something denied by the Big G itself.

Now though, LG has apologised and said it’s looking into the matter. In a statement, it said, “LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus. Google recently announced the Gingerbread platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code. Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series.”

That’s not to say the Optimus line will be getting Gingerbread and does somewhat shuft the blame back onto Google. This looks like it will run and run. In the meantime, at least HTC has said its cells will be getting the new version of the OS.

Google: 300,000 Android phones activated daily

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 01:49 AM PST

Figure comes just four months after Google CEO said 200,000 phones were being activated every day.

Need yet more evidence that Google Android continues to be the hottest mobile OS out there? Then look no further. Android boss Andy Rubin has taken to Twitter and made the following astonishing claim.

“There are over 300,000 Android phones activated each day.” Short, pithy and to the point, but a stat which is incredible when you consider that it was only August when Google CEO Eric Schmidt said 200,000 Android phones were being fired up daily.

Of course, Apple and RIM will dispute Rubin’s statement. But there’s simply no denying that in just over two years, Android has become the dominant mobile platform. It sits atop smartphone sales charts and is constantly on tech watchers’ lips.

iPad 2: no OLED display

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:53 AM PST

Apple going with OLED alternative as iPad 2 rumours gather pace.

The iPad 2 will not come with an OLED screen. That’s according to sources in Taiwan, which have told Digitimes that Cupertino has instead opted for a backlight unit (BLU).

The news kills off any lingering speculation that Jobs and co were ready to make the switch to OLED, which has been favoured by rival phone and tablet makers in the past.

Chatter about who’s supplying what for the iPad 2 has been rife for months, as Apple gears up for the release of the sequel to its best-selling slate. The company Coretrenic is said to be making the iPad 2 panels.

HTC Android 2.3 update confirmed

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:28 AM PST

Taiwanese tech titan says update is coming and tells users to "stay tuned".

HTC has confirmed that its current batch of Android phones will be getting a boost to the all-new Gingerbread version of the OS.

In a brief statement, the mobile maker said, “We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more details."

While it’s no doubt welcome news, HTC’s failure to hand over more specific information is bound to cause concern. The protracted move to Android 2.2 FroYo will cause some punters to worry that the same thing is about to happen again.

Have you got a HTC phone? Does it need to serve up more deets on when Gingerbread is coming to its handsets? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
