It's not such good news on the Google TV front with Logitech Revue production having been halted until the next Google TV software update has been finalised.

Android touting Galaxy S nears 10 million sales

Samsung is on the verge of realising its 10 million unit sales hopes for its flagship Android powered mobile handset the Samsung Galaxy S, new figures have revealed.

Having arrived with Google’s Android 2.1 mobile operating system, the Galaxy S has since been given a 2.2, FroYo update with the 1GHz Hummingbird processer touting, 4-inch Super AMOLED hosting, 5-megapixel camera bragging device currently awaiting a 2.3, Gingerbread overhaul.

EA launches Android sale, Worms and Bejeweled coming

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 05:05 AM PST

EA Mobile has followed up its successful iPhone sale by offering four of its top Android titles for around 60p.

FIFA 10, Need for Speed: Shift, Tetris and The SIMS 3 can be downloaded for 99c from the Android Market in a nice little pre-Christmas reward for Android owners. Monopoly and The Game of Life, licensed by Hasbo will cost $1.99 (around £1.20).

The publisher has also announced that it has acquired the license to release old classics Worms and Bejeweled on the Android platform, which will be launched in 2011.

EA's games are currently available for handsets packing Android 2.0 and above. It looks like EA is serious about bringing some world class games to the Android platform, which is sorely lacking in quality compared to the line-up and quality on show in the rival App Store.

Virgin Media 3D content given hefty pre-Christmas boost

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 03:22 AM PST

Virgin Media chase Sky in 3D content stakes

Virgin Media has announced it is to add a feast of new 3D content to its on-demand services early in the New Year as it looks to capitalise on the festive adoption of the extra dimensional home entertainment technology.

With two 3D documentaries and two additional dimension animations joining the Virgin Media service of XL TV customers yesterday, a further nine 3D entertainment additions will roll out cross January and February with Hollywood releases The Hole and Despicable Me joining the mix as on-demand 3D Movies.

In an attempt to keep up with rivals Sky, which will broadcast Avatar in 3D for the first time this evening, the Virgin Media 3D content will feature a selection of natural history productions with documentaries entitled 3D Sun and Dinosaurs Alive already available to be followed by Mummies, Waking the T-Rex, Siegfried and Roy: The Magic Box and MicroWorlds as well as the enticingly named The Extreme Nature of Bats.

Upping the 3D anti, Sony yesterday declared it believed 2011 would be the year 3D comes “into fruition” with the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Andrew House declaring: “3D is going to be driven by building an ecosystem that's based around content, TV penetration, and so on."

House added: "In the UK you are seeing a strong push by broadcasters like Sky, who see enormous potential in 3D.”

Desktop App Store tipped to open its doors in January

Screenshots, icons and coding for Apple's Mac App Store have emerged as we anticipate a launch in early January.

First up is evidence of the Mac App Store login page which interestingly also indicates that users will be able to gain access with an Apple account, iTunes account, or MobileMe account.

Apple iOS-like parental controls preferences appear likely according to coding which also supports a feature which allows games to be blocked for certain age groups. Lastly, there's the Mac App Store icon which you can see here located on a Mac OS X 10.6.6 dock.

Set to be available as a free download for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users, January 6th has been touted as an official launch date for the Mac App Store which coincidentally is the same day that CES 2011 kicks off.

Logitech Revue: Production halts on Google TV boxes

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 02:48 AM PST

Is Google working on a complete overhaul in the face of poor sales?

Just days after word that Google has asked TV manufacturers to hold off on unveiling new Google TV sets, a source close to Logitech has revealed that production of its Revue set top boxes has been halted, as we wait for Google to update the software.

Whilst concrete numbers remain a secret, Google TV certainly hasn’t been the world-conquering entertainment revolution its makers and partners were hoping for. The blame for this seems to be lying in the software, which lacks the polish that Apple’s famous for.

Gigabyte, who make the Revue boxes for Logitech, has reportedly halted production until march 2011, under the grounds that Google may choose to integrate the upcoming Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) into Google TV’s next iteration.

Google TV still isn’t out in the UK, but is expected half way through next year. Will you buy into the VoD platform? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Weird News: The year in tech's strangest happenings

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 02:22 AM PST

The year in Weird News

2010 has been a wild a turbulent year in the world of tech with many great gadgets landing, 3D tech taking to the mainstream and tablet computers finding a strong second wind spearheaded by Apple’s dominant iPad.

Away from the tech successes and groundbreaking new releases the year has been littered by the weird and wonderful stories that keep this industry from stagnating. As we now draw close on the year, we take a look back at the strange gadget goings on of the past 12 months.

Steve Jobs spotted in the wild:
Apple’s CEO and bringer of the year’s must have gadget, Steve Jobs has been spotted out in public. It’s almost as weird as when you used to see your teachers in nightclubs, isn’t it? Stranger still: he‘s been photographed wearing that same outfit he always makes his announcements in, fuelling rumours that he is in fact a cartoon character, and is painted into his clothes. Steve: Blue jeans of that hue are pretty nineties. Oh, and yes: this does qualify as news.

Time Traveller found in Black and White film:
A member of the public identified what looks like a woman on a mobile phone in footage from a Charlie Chaplin film. Could this be evidence of time travel, or just an example of crazy people talking to their hands? You decide

Mysterious Amazon package not so mysterious:
It’s a simple story, this one: Man finds package on his own doorstep, man worries it’s a bomb, man calls police, policeman spots Amazon logo on package, man concedes to shopping on Amazon. It’s a parable of the modern day that further shows our species to be too stupid to deserve planetary supremacy.

Facebook group to prove Boobs don't cause earthquakes:
An Iranian cleric bizarrely claimed that women in sexy clothes cause earthquakes. The logical response? Thousands of ladies in Facebook's 'Boobquake' campaign will show off their assets this Monday to prove him wrong.

Worldwide nerdgasms as lightsabers become reality:
Anyone who isn’t absurdly excited by the prospect of a real life lightsaber probably has no soul. Hold your horses though, as one swift swipe of this badboy will probably leave you with no skin and no eyes. Rad-iculous

Check back to T3.com every week in 2011 for a bevy of new and truly absurd weird news.

According to the report, users browsed 340 billion pages in the first 11 months of 2010, 80.0 million people used Opera Mini in November, 44.6 billion pages were served, and 6.3 petabytes of operator data were compressed for Opera Mini users. The new iOS version of the Tomb Raider game splashed across 56 iPad screens

Snow-weary travellers at St Pancras International station were in for a surprise at the start of this week when they were greeted by Lara Croft and the largest Apple iPhone they had ever seen.

Square Enix, the game publisher, created the world's largest iPhone from 56 Apple iPads to celebrate the launch of the iOS version of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

The new Tomb Raider version for iOS devices was displayed on the "iPhone" at St Pancras, London, after which the iPads were given out to lucky passers-by. Each iPad came pre-loaded with the Lara Croft game.

Google Nexus S goes to outer space and works

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 11:40 PM PST

Android astronauts travel to the big unknown.

If you needed another reason to buy the Google Nexus S apart from all the specs the phone boasts, this would be it.

Google tested the boundaries of their Nexus S phones and sent them where no phones have gone before - outer space.

Little Android astronauts were sent into outer space with seven Nexus S phones. The phones' sensors were being tested, and applications including Google Maps and Google Sky Map were being used.

After the experiment, it was found that the Nexus S was able to function till temperatures of minus 50 degrees Celsius and the GPS kept track of the phone till 60,000 feet.

The Google Blog hosts videos of the Nexus S' trip to outer space passing 100,000 feet, and we see a tiny green Android astronaut getting knocked off the platform to plummet to Earth.

The Google Nexus S already has been gifted Android 2.3.1 in the US and we're hoping to see a UK version soon.

Do you think the Nexus S is sturdier after knowing it works in outer space? Fly over to T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and weigh in. Stay tuned in for latest tech news.
