News@8pm: Playstation Phone and Android 3.0

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

We started today with official word that Google Android 2.3 will launch in the next few weeks. The next iteration of the mobile OS will precede the release of the more tablet friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which was spotted today being demoed on demoed on a prototype Motorola tablet. The same 2.3 update that’ll allow that also seems to have blown the lid off the much-rumoured Playstation phone, with lines in its code confirming the device’s existence.

This was alongside news that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has finally had the nod from Android 2.2 FroYo, which is good news for those to whom the talk of 3.0 is a long way off. Speaking of updates, that same Moto demo was where the world first caught a glimpse of the new Google Maps for Mobile, which has bestowed 3D maps to over 100 cities worldwide. The Google news continued, as it was revealed that the its online book store had its official unveiling.

Amazon to launch Kindle web app to rival Google eBooks

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 09:35 AM PST

Amazon to hit back at Google today.

Amazon is prepared to react quickly to Google's attempts to muscle in on the ebook market by launching a Kindle for the Web app to bring full titles to your browser.

Reports suggest that Amazon is set to make the announcement before the close of play today,  with demonstrations of how it will work also forthcoming.

The news comes after Google officially announced its eBookstore yesterday, which brings full titles to the web, Apple's iPad and iPhone as well as Android phones. They'll also work on the Sony Reader range and the Barnes & Noble Nook, which has been a huge hit stateside.

Amazon currently has apps for a huge range of mobile devices as well as the ultra successful standalone Kindle devices, but currently users are unable to view full titles on their desktop or laptop, via the web. A beta version of Kindle for Web does allow ebook fans to sample the first chapter or two before they buy.

RIM to launch 3D capable BlackBerry handset in 2011?

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 09:08 AM PST

BlackBerry to join 3D bandwagon

RIM, the Canadian force behind the BlackBerry brand, is reportedly preparing a 3D touting mobile handset to launch in 2011 following its acquisition of Swedish company The Astonishing Tribe.

Whilst currently nothing more than rumour and speculation, the news of the extra dimensional bragging BlackBerry sees RIM join the 3D mobile bandwagon currently occupied by the likes of Apple, HTC and the already produced Sharp 3D pocket blower.

Having purchased The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) earlier in the year, a company specialising in 3D user interfaces, it is believed that a 2011 available BlackBerry handset will feature a screen capable of 3D video playback, 3D gaming and a new breed of 3D enhanced applications.

With a largely business-based client pool, it remains to be seen whether RIM’s current clientele would be the intended target market for the company’s expected 3D smartphones. HTC and Apple are both believed to be working on 3D technologies ahead of next year with Android and iOS devices expected to be on the receiving end of an extra dimensional makeover.

Would you want a 3D smartphone or would it be an unnecessary, pointless adition to an already overcrowded device? Share your thoughts and opinions with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

RIM encourages developers to produce PlayBook apps with free tablet promise

Research in Motion has issued a call to arms to all mobile application developers as it announces it is now accepting app submissions for its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Expected to launch early in 2011 just weeks ahead of the rumoured Apple iPad 2, the BlackBerry PlayBook will be one of the most power tablets available to date as it hits shelves sporting a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and front and rear facing cameras, all neatly wrapped inside its 7-inch frame.

Encouraging developers to show their skills using Adobe AIR, Flash or HTML, RIM’s Vice President of Global Alliances & Developer Relations, Tyler Lessard, said: "With its groundbreaking performance and robust support for industry standard development tools, the BlackBerry PlayBook provides an exceptional platform that appeals to a wide range of mobile app developers.”

Further looking to appease the developers RIM hopes will fill the PlayBook with content, Lessard went on to add: "We are very pleased to be working with developers in advance of the product launch and the opening of BlackBerry App World to accept BlackBerry PlayBook apps is an important next step."

Registered developers who successfully submit an app for the BlackBerry PlayBook prior to the device’s launch will each receive a free RIM branded tablet.

iPad pushes Apple's global computing market share

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 06:56 AM PST

Apple surpass Dell in mobile computing stakes

Apple has become the world’s third largest provider of mobile computing devices following the launch of the iPad, new figures from analyst firm DisplaySearch have revealed.

Figures compiled for a Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report have show that Apple controlled 12.4 per cent of the global mobile shipments in the third quarter of this year exceeded only by HP and Acer which were responsible for 17.3 per cent and 16.5 per cent of the market respectively.

Sales of the iPad, or the “iPad effect” as DisplaySearch has dubbed it, is reportedly the cause of Apple’s rise onto the podium, bolstering the popularity of the Apple mobile computing brand, formerly solely reliant on the company’s range of MacBooks. With America having the highest iPad adoption rate of any nation, sales of the market leading tablet stateside have pushed Apple to the US’s number one mobile computing provider.

Despite the company’s global and US success, Director of IT Market Research at DisplaySearch, Hidetoshi Himuro, said: “On a global scale, the adoption of iPad is not without its challenges. Localized content in non-English speaking regions is sparse, and iPad owners must have a PC for downloading content from iTunes. As a result, penetration in developing regions will be slow.”

With the iPad atop many Christmas wish lists this festive period, it is expected that Apple’s mobile computing market share will rise further still in the year’s final quarter. Have you already nabbed yourself an iPad? Share your thoughts on the Apple tablet with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb demoed on Motorola tablet

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 04:49 AM PST

Android 3.0 shown off following 2.3 launch

The first Android 2.3 handset might only have been announced yesterday, but Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, the first to play nice with tablets, has already been outed in a hands-on video with the upcoming Motorola Stingray.

Following the arrival of the Samsung Nexus S and its Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) filling, Google’s Andy Rubin took to the stage at the D: Drive Into Mobile event in San Francisco to demo the upcoming 3.0 OS on what's believed to be the heavily touted Motorola tablet.

The Honeycomb OS has a typical Android style enhanced by  on-screen desktop-esque navigational inflections brought on by the lack of the usual trio of navigation buttons found on Android handsets. Rubin said: “This is an early version of Honeycomb, that’s what the engineers are all working on right now and it will be out sometime next year.”

Details are scant on the actual tablet: the name isn't official, and according to Rubin it “isn’t due out for a while now”, but he could confirm it has a dual-core Nvidia 3D processor. There's also no launch date, but with Honeycomb expected early 2011, we could well see it hit the market around the same time as the Apple iPad 2 and RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook. Now that sounds like a good tablet fight if ever we saw one.

What do you think of the displayed version of Android 3.0? Share your thoughts of the tablet-bound OS via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds, and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on Honeycomb's arrival.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 finally getting FroYo

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 03:15 AM PST

Unloved X10 about to get a taste of FroYo, just as Gingerbread takes a bow.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 has been strung out on Android 1.6 since its launch, with Android 2.1 Donut only recently making its way to the mobile maker’s supposed flagship device.

And despite gossip that that would be the last update the phone would be getting, news comes from the wilds of Turkey about a further boost to the now outdated Android 2.2 FroYo. A customer services rep there has let confirmed that the upgrade will be coming to the phone, but not until the second quarter of 2011.

That’s a lengthy wait for those who bought the top end device this year. By April 2011, it’s likely that Android Gingerbread will be old news and 3.0 Honeycomb will be the latest thing.

Do you own an X10? Are you bored of the lengthy waits for software updates? Tell us on our Facebook and Twitter pages now. And remember to nab some free Android apps as part of our AppVent feature.

Google Maps for Mobile 5 gets 3D graphics

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 03:04 AM PST

100 cities worldwide receive a 3D makeover on the free mapping service

Google’s superb gratis navigation service for smartphones – Google Maps for mobile – has received a rather glossy update, as was shown off by the company’s Andy Rubin at the D: Dive into Mobile event last night.

Version 5 of the software has had a bit of a facelift, and added 3D vector graphics to the proceedings. This information has been gifted to 100 cities around the globe, and means that you’ll be able to guide yourself around with the help of 3D buildings and landmarks guiding the way.

What’s more, new gesture controls will allow you to swipe or tilt the phone to angle the 3D view, as well as gift smoother pinch to zoom. All this info is stored in the cloud and accessed on the fly, so there’s no need for it to clog up your handset’s memory. The list of devices that’ll support the update is as follows: Galaxy S, Droid (Milestone), Droid X, Droid 2, Droid Incredible, Evo, Nexus S, G2.

PlayStation Phone confirmed by Android 2.3 code?

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 02:23 AM PST

PlayStation Phone the first of many Gingerbread gaming devices?

Coding from the newly launched Android 2.3 OS update makes clear references to gaming buttons in what could be the strongest indication yet that the PlayStation Phone is about to launch.

L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons well known to PlayStation console owners have been referenced, while further buttons labelled A/B/C and X/Y/Z have also been mentioned. The latter suggests that the PlayStation Phone may not be the only gaming device to run on the Gingerbread which Google has said is geared towards gaming.

New videos of the PlayStation Phone which could be renamed the Sony Ericsson Z1, appeared yesterday showing the device sporting Android 2.3 as we build up to what could be an official launch on the 9th December.

The PlayStation Phone is expected to feature a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, a 8GB microSD slot, 512MB of RAM and a sizeable 4-inch display.

Stay tuned to T3.com as we'll bring you news of the PlayStation Phone as soon as it hits.

Asus DR900 officially up for grabs

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 01:19 AM PST

Price yet to be confirmed for 9-inch effort.

Asus’s DR900 e-reader has finally launched, nine months after first taking a bow at Hanover’s CeBIT gadget bash. The pencil-thin effort comes with a capacious 9-inch screen, which packs capacitive touch skills.

With instant page turns and the ability to eschew glare in direct bright light, Asus is hoping the DR900 will prove a winner with those after a Kindle alternative.

The battery is good for two weeks continuous reading according to Asus, while Wi-Fi is crammed inside. There’s also a 3G version if you just have to get your book fix before hitting a Wi-Fi network.

Despite saying its release was imminent, Asus has failed to hand over any pricing details. Until we get those, we won’t know whether this really is a Kindle rival worth stumping up for. Android 2.3 Gingerbread software update "in next few weeks"

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 12:13 AM PST

Nexus S is quickest way to get your hands on new Android software.

Jonesing for Android 2.3 but don’t want to drop £550 on that sleek new Samsung Google Nexus S? Well, it looks like you’ve got a bit of a wait on your hands according to Android developer Reto Meier.

Meier took to Twitter last night to refute claims that an over-the-air update for the now old-school Nexus One was imminent. He said, “The Nexus One OTA isn’t happening just yet - should be coming in a few weeks”.

The update to Android 2.2 FroYo has proved to be a long and fraught process, with many punters still lacking the software despite it being in the wild for over six months. Expect a similarly lengthy process for Gingerbread, especially when it comes to phones rocking custom UIs and tweaks, which make changes harder to implement.

Are you planning on getting a Nexus S? Tell us why it’s the smartphone for you on our Twitter and Facebook page now. And remember you can get free Android apps now as part of our AppVent festivities.

Google eBookstore official

Posted: 06 Dec 2010 11:47 PM PST

Buy books, stash them online and read on any device.

Google has come over all official with its new eBookstore, which lets bookworms nab millions of titles and store them in the cloud, making them available to read on, “pretty much any device with an internet connection”.

Once you’ve bought a book, it’ll be stored online in the same way your emails are stashed on Gmail or pics kept on Picasa. You can then read it on your PC, tablet or phone, depending on what takes your fancy.

Books in the online store aren’t just sold by Google, but also from independent booksellers that have partnered with the Big G. Google has already released iOS and Android apps which work with its eBookstore, and you can use it with e-readers from Sony and Barnes & Noble.

For now, the Google eBookstore is a US only affair, but last week a Google exec suggested a worldwide launch would be on its way in the first quarter of 2011. Have a gander at it in action in the clip below now and let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
