News@8pm: Blackberry Torch 9810 and PS4 release details

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Research in Motion has finally unveiled its new Blackberry 7 OS. The new operating system will launch alongside two new Blackberry Bold handsets and three new Blackberry Torch handsets. One of the new Blackberry phones to tout OS 7 is the Torch 9810, which is unsurprisingly a follow on from the popular Torch 9800. It will sport a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a 3.2 inch touch display, 5-megapixel camera and 720p HD Video recording capabilities, all in its minimalist 14.5mm form.

Today saw Sony out its S1 and S2 tablets yet again. The fourth and potentially last video teaser showed off some of the features of the new tablets, suggesting that both device will support HDMI-out, allowing them to be connected and stream video content to television sets. Despite being set for national release tomorrow, Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 10.1 was made available for purchase today in Tottenham Court Road’s Curry’s store.

In gaming news the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 consoles are reportedly set for a relese date as late as 2014 despite the Nintendo Wii U set to make its appearance next year. With current generation consoles in mind, new screenshots of PES 2012 were released today. The Konami produced footy alternative to FIFA may be closer than ever to its famous rival, showing off improved animations and a new feint system.

According to a report by the Guardian the iPhone 5 is being sent for mobile network testing. Due to security issues and Apple’s desire to keep everything hush-hush, however, the phone will be delivered in a sealed box and securely wrapped in a dummy case to prevent images being leaked. The iPhone 5’s official release date has been surrounded by much mystery and speculation, often from not so reliable sources, but today the iPhone 5’s actual manufacturer was reported to be readying the device to begin shipping in September.

iPhone app news: iCondom app campaign fights STIs

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 08:55 AM PDT

App promotes safe sex and allows others to do the same.

Ever been caught short without a condom after embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime Esquire magazine cover girl pulling session? No, us neither. But for your every day emergency rubber requirements an iPhone app has come to the rescue.

The iCondom app for iPhone, which offers an extensive database of condom dispensaries in your locale, has teamed up with MTV to promote sexual awareness and fight against HIV and other nasty STIs.

The free app, allows you to see places on the map that'll dish out some sheaths when you need them the most and, hopefully, prevent your appendage from falling off in the event that you've acquired the company of a partner of questionable sexual ethics.

Users can leave comments on each dispensary and also add their own new sites into the mix, so the database is constantly growing thanks to safe sexual productivity of its users.

The outcome of the iCondom/MTV Staying Alive campaign will be to create a global condom distribution map, so wherever you are in the world you can find out where the nearest, open facility to obtain your Trojan Magnums (they do come in smaller sizes too...).

You can download iCondom from the App Store now, so get going. It's for a good cause afterall.

Internet Explorer low IQ story not true

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

So it turns out it was all a big hoax, a pretty effective one at that

It's been confirmed that a story which claimed Internet Explorer users had a lower IQ than everyone else is in fact a hoax. It was initially embraced by several major news websites like the Telegraph, Daily Mail, Forbes but was then later found to be a bogus story.

The information in question came from a fake statistics company known as AptiQuant, the company claimed it had carried out a study which included nearly 100,000 people, all of whom took a standard IQ test. They then correlated the IQ results with the web browser they used, which then in turn found that participants who used Internet Explorer scored much lower than anyone else.

It was only discovered to be a hoax after determined readers realised that in fact AptiQuant beared a startling resemblence to a statistics company that already existed, right down to the staff photographs. Soon after the genuine company known as 'Central Test' confirmed that it had, unsurprisingly, no affiliation with a company called AptiQuant.

It's not sure who the culprits were, however speculation is citing it as the work of a PR company or a group who wished to lower the reputation of Microsofts web browser.

What do you think, clever work of a PR company or simply a prank played by a group of discruntled ex-Microsoft employees? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

PS4 and Xbox 720 release not coming until at least 2014?

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Gaming head suggests the Xbox 720 and PS4 are still at least two years away from launch

The mooted next-generation Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 consoles will not enter the realms of reality until at least 2014, the director of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has said, claiming “consumers are happy” with the current generation consoles.

Speaking with PSM3 magazine Todd Howard, director of the Bethesda Game Studios release, suggested Microsoft and Sony will hold off introducing a new era of games consoles as consumers are still happy with the possibilities offered by the current Xbox 360 and PS3.

"I think it's going to be a while still, I really do,” said Howard discussing the possible arrival of the Xbox 720 and PS4. He added: I think consumers are happy with the current ones, there's a lot you can do with them so I don't think it's coming next year or the year after.”

Earlier reports had suggested that Microsoft was readying the repeatedly mooted Xbox 720 release date for E3 2012 with the next-gen console to hit stores ahead of next year’s Christmas period.

Which console would you rather see next the Sony PlayStation 4 or Xbox 720? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release date nears as latest iPhone 5 rumours suggest handset to be shipped from manufacturers in September

With the iPhone 5 release date still a mystery and the subject of much speculation, latest reports have suggested that rumoured iPhone 5 manufacturer Pegatron will begin shipping the device in September.

Tipped as one of the manufacturing plants to have secured a contract to produce the iPhone 5 for Apple, Pegatron is reportedly finishing off the first wave of its quota of 10 million handsets ahead of a September shipping date.

Citing “industry sources”, Chinese tech blog and repeated Apple rumour starter DigiTimes has claimed that “shipments will start in September” after “Pegatron Technology landed orders for 10 million units of iPhone 5.”

Whilst most iPhone 5 rumours have suggested the mooted Apple handset will touch down in September, a number of recent reports have claimed the currently unconfirmed handset will instead launch in early October.

When do you expect to see Apple launch the iPhone 5? September? October? Couldn’t care less? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PES 2012 new screenshots released

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 04:56 AM PDT

PES 2012 is looking to give FIFA a run for it's money, especially if these shots are anything to go by.

Konami have released some more tantalising images for the upcoming addition to the series Pro Evolution Soccer. Showing off the new and improved animations and feint system which Konami is hoping will make PES 2012 a winner.

With a release date of October 14 the game will almost certainly be looking to give it's main rival FIFA 2012 a run for it's money. With improved and vastly increased animations, the game will not only look better, but with a new feint and trick system the developers hope to make it much more satisying.

There's no word as yet on any online functionality but considering how good it looks at the moment, and the new trick system, it's unlikely fans will be worrying about that just yet.

Check out the video below for a breakdown of the new system and click here for a gallery of the new screenshots.

Sony S1 and S2 tablet video teases further features

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 04:23 AM PDT

Sony tablets outed once again in latest, and final, Sony S1 and S2 video teaser

The fourth and seemingly last Sony tablet video teaser has been released giving yet another tantalising glimpse of the upcoming Android powered S1 and S2 devices.

The latest video teaser offers little information, or even look, at the Sony S1 and S2 tablets but does suggest the two devices will support HDMI-out allowing the tablets to be connected and stream video content to television sets.

Whilst Sony has yet to confirm the specs for the two tablet devices reports earlier this week claimed to have outed a number of key features for the upcoming iPad challengers.

With the 9.4-inch Sony S1 the most likely of the two devices to directly target Apple’s iPad 2 Sony is reportedly set to release the device in 16GB or 32GB storage formats with each size to be available with both Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + 3G connectivity options.

Adversely the dual 5.5-inch display touting S2 will reportedly be made available only in Wi-Fi + 3G forms again with 16 or 32GB storage capacities.

Have the four Sony S1 and S2 teaser videos left you eagerly awaiting the launch of the Android tablets? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC sues Apple in UK over patent infringement

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 03:51 AM PDT

HTC has decided to make a stand, this has inevitably meant they're taking Apple to court, but this time in Blighty.

HTC is to take Apple to court appealing a patent infringement in the latest of a long line of legal battles that have been going on between the tech giants.

After HTC was found to be in violation of certain patents held by Apple, the Taiwanese company has fought back, appealing a ruling which stated Apple wasn't in violation of patents held by technology firm S3 (which HTC are in the process of buying).

It's believed however that the British courts could side with Apple as this appeal is based on a ruling that had already sided with the company from Cupertino. All is not lost however as Google is offering to help out HTC if they do indeed lose and end up paying royalties to Apple.

It'll be an especially hard blow for HTC who are already paying royalties to Microsoft, $5 in fact, for every Android phone that's sold.

Has this gone too far, or do you think the company's should be spending this money on legal battles? Join the debate on Facebook and Twitter.

Virgin Media to provide free wi-fi in London?

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 02:27 AM PDT

Virgin Media may well have announced a loss in customers, but apparently it's still looking out for the average Joe

The communications company Virgin Media has announced that it is in the 'advanced' stages of negotiations to provide a free wi-fi service for  various areas of London.

The service would provide 0.5Mbps to everyone while Virgin Media customers would be entitled to a much more beefy 10Mbps. Whilst offering no financial gain for the company, Virgin Media's CEO believes that it was in line with the company's 'ethos' of advancing wireless communication standards for everyone.

Noble sentiments indeed, and certainly another step forward in making the capital wireless, echoing the call from London Mayor Boris Johnson to have London completely wireless by the Olympics.

Think London should be made into a free wi-fi hub? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple iCloud UK prices revealed

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 02:10 AM PDT

Cost of extra storage starts at £14 a year.

Apple has confirmed UK pricing for its forthcoming iCloud storage service. The cost of extra space, on top of the 5GB free allowance, starts at £14. The service is set to launch alongside iOS 5 in September.

10GB extra storage costs £14 a year, while 20GB will set you back £28 and 50GB comes in at £70. That compares to $20, $40 and $100 a year in the States. All users get 5GB for free to start, with iTunes purchases not included. That means you can stock up on tracks, movies and TV shows from Apple’s online emporium without having to worry about going over your data limit.

Apple opened up iCloud.com to developers yesterday, as the company looks to iron out any kinks with the service before its big roll out. Users can sync everything from contacts, calendars and their iPhone location via the service.

Will you be stumping up for iCloud? Or are the prices too much? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia Windows Phone: no plans for Gamescom reveal

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 01:11 AM PDT

Gossip centred around joint Microsoft and Nokia event later this month.

It all seemed too good to be true. Nokia and Microsoft’s joint bash during the Gamescom event in Cologne later this month had the web’s tech fans falling over themselves to speculate about whether the fabled Windows Phone-packing Nokia Sea Ray would finally be getting its official unveiling.

Sadly not, it seems. A ‘trusted source’ has told This Is My Next that the two tech giants are simply using the event on 17 August to meet devs before the big launch of the Nokia Windows Phone handset later this year.

So, the wait goes on. Nokia World, held in London on 26 and 27 October, is the most likely place for the phone to be shown off in all its glory. Even then, Nokia is yet to confirm whether it’ll be released this year.

iPad 2 Plus: analyst adds to 'premium' slate rumours

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 11:39 PM PDT

"Incremental" update already in production says analyst.

Talk of a so-called iPad 2 Plus, or iPad HD, has been rife in recent weeks. And now a new voice has added to the clamour surrounding the next-gen slate. Analyst Asok Kumar, renowned for offering his tuppence worth on new Apple kit, reckons such a device is being primed in China right now.

Kumar claims sources in the supply chain have told him that Foxconn is all set to go into production with the new device. He claims, as per previous rumours, that it’ll pack a better screen than the current iPad 2, and that it won’t be a replacement, rather a ‘pro’ version.

This certainly fits in with previous rumours about the iPad 2 Plus. But how likely is Apple to release a new iPad so soon after rolling out its second-gen slate?

We’ll be bringing you more on this story as it breaks, so stay tuned right here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 sent for testing in sealed boxes

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 11:27 PM PDT

Report suggests phone will be released in September, not October.

The iPhone 5 is being sent out to mobile networks for testing, according to a report in The Guardian. However, security is so tight that the phone is being delivered in a sealed box and even then is wrapped in a dummy case to prevent images of the device leaking online.

Network sources have told The Guardian’s Charles Arthur that the phones are now in their labs. That means they can now put it through its paces for a month at least before release.

Arthur also claims that the iPhone 5 will hit shelves in September, not October as some tittle tattle has claimed this week. Why? Because there’s no way Apple will want to miss out on sales in the run up to Christmas. He cites Steve Jobs stating in 2005 that every week in the pre-Christmas period is vital.

There’s no doubting that as the rumours reach fever pitch, the iPhone 5 is getting very close to reality. Get all the latest news and gossip from us on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
