iPhone 5 release date hinted at as October by network head

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 09:03 AM PDT

New iPhone 5 rumours have suggested an Apple iPhone 5 release date of early October

As the iPhone 5 rumours mill continues to churn out potential iPhone 5 release dates, the Vice President of American smartphone retailer and network AT&T has reportedly told staff to prepare of an early October arrival.

Citing “one of our high-level AT&T sources,” tech blog Boy Genius Report has suggested that an AT&T Vice President has informed a number of key employees that the iPhone 5 will launch during the opening couple of weeks of October.

“Expect things to get really, really busy in the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly,” the network head reportedly said of the iPhone 5 release date.

These latest claims would fit with reports earlier this week that suggested that iPhone 5 pre-orders were to kick off on September 30th following a late September Apple event and an early October release. Other iPhone 5 rumours of note have suggested the handset will land with a dual-core processor, improved camera and slimmed form factor.

What features would you most like to see land on Apple’s next-generation smartphone? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple files 'inaccurate' evidence against Samsung

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:27 AM PDT

Apple has apparently been doctoring images of the Samsung Galaxy S concerning its size proportions in order to give it a more similar resemblance to the iPhone 3G. If this is true they could get more than a slap on the wrist.

Dutch website Webwereld.nl has claimed that Apple has been doctoring images of Samsung's Galaxy S in order to make sure it appears more similar to the Apple iPhone 3G

The website claims that the image was found amongst Apple's legal documents which were submitted to the court as evidence as part of an ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung over patents. The image shows the Samsung Galaxy S next to the Apple iPhone 3G with almost entirely identical dimensions. This is of course impossible as the Galaxy S is some size bigger than the 3G and boasts a much bigger screen.

This comes just days after the website claimed they had discovered another image, this time of the recently temporarily banned Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The image showed Samsung's tablet but with completely different dimensions, next to an iPad 2, again, in order to highlight what Apple believe to be unacceptable similarities in the products.

It seems almost incredible that a company as big as Apple could commit a faux pas such as this, however as yet neither Apple nor the courts have made any comment on the images or tried to disprove their existence.

What do you think, has Apple been administering some Photoshop magic to Samsung's products? Join the debate on Twitter and Facebook.

HP dropping webOS hardware surprises industry retailers

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:17 AM PDT

HP webOS cull a shock to retailers as webOS hardware such as the HP TouchPad and Pre 3 reportedly sell well

HP’s decision to cease production of all webOS hardware has come as a shock to industry retailers with online outlet Clove Technology telling T3 that sales of webOS devices “have been good.”

The move, which came less than two months after the HP TouchPad UK release date and just two days after the HP Pre 3 launched, caught many off guard with the webOS operating which was first created by Pre now on the brink of abandonment.

"I'm quite surprised that HP has made the decision to stop making hardware for webOS so soon after taking it over,” said Chris Ward of online retailer Clove Technology talking exclusively with T3. He added: “It’s a great platform.”

With HP bringing a swift end to the production of webOS hardware in order to focus on “the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group,” early adopters of the TouchPad and Pre 3 will no doubt be concerned about continued support for the service.

“Despite the long wait between the new webOS devices being announced and released, over 6 months in total I think, we've had strong interest in the Pre 3 and sales have been good upon launch,” said Ward. “While some people may be put off by the uncertainty of the future of the OS, we have found that webOS has a strong following and I think that the majority of fans will stick by it.”

Are you one of those to already have plumped for a HP TouchPad or Pre 3? Share your thoughts on the HP decision via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPad 2 with webOS faster than on TouchPad

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 07:46 AM PDT

HP dropping its hardware was a shock to everyone, not so much for the team behind webOS however. After trying it out on Apple's iPad 2 they realised the HP TouchPad was woefully underpowered.

Sources for website 'The Next Web' have discovered that apparently the team behind webOS had tested their operating system out on Apple's latest tablet and found that it ran two times faster than on their own HP TouchPad.

The story goes on to reveal that the team were fully aware of just how underpowered their hardware was, heading over to Apple to find out what the webOS was fully capable of. By using it through the internet browser Safari they found that webOS functioned two times faster with the iPad's A5 architecture clearly being able to outrun the HP TouchPad's Snapdragon A8.

In some ways this should be reassuring news because it does indeed prove that HP's software is incredibly capable, outclassing the hardware its been coupled with. With the TouchPad and the Pre to become things of the past, can we expect to see webOS make a return on another manufacturer's handset, rumours suggest Samsung or HTC may be interested.

Would you like to see webOS live on or is it not up to scratch? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.#

iPad 3 rumours: Apple to add 2048 x 1536p retina display

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 07:34 AM PDT

Ahead of the Apple iPad 3 release date new iPad 3 rumours have suggested the tablet will host a retina display

With the iPad 3 release date expected to follow Apple’s annual product cycle and launch in April or May of 2012 the Wall Street Journal has reported the mooted next-generation tablet is to launch with a 2048 x 1536p Retina style display.

Citing “people familiar with the situation,” the WSJ has added to the growing list of iPad 3 rumours suggesting the third-generation Apple tablet will launch with four times the display pixels as the existing iPad 2 and the original iPad, both of which sported a 1024 x 768p screen. It is expected that Apple with maintain the same 9.7-inch screen size for its next-gen tablet.

“Apple Inc. is working with component suppliers and its assembler in Asia for the trial production of its next generation iPad from October as it looks to stay ahead of the competition in the fast-growing tablet computer market,” stated the WSJ report.

“The next generation iPad is expected to feature a high resolution display – 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the iPad 2 – and Apple’s suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3. Suppliers said Apple has placed orders for a 9.7-inch screen device.”

Would an increased resolution display top your list of desirable iPad 3 features? If not what would? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC event to showcase new HTC tablet?

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 07:00 AM PDT

With IFA 2011 just around the corner it's hardly surprising tongues are wagging over this public invitation HTC event with odds on that they may show off the HTC Ruby, HTC Bliss and the HTC Puccini

HTC has organised a London event for the public through the social network Facebook, the event is on the 1 September, first come first serve and will show those that attend what 'is next' for HTC.

While this is all sounding very vague, the fact that IFA 2011 conference is literally just round the corner it seems likely that this could be a event which showcases some of their upcoming products or perhaps an update for HTC Sense. In fact if you look back at the last time the company had a public event like this it came after the HTC Sensation was released.

What everyone will be hoping however is that it'll be the point at which HTC finally outs it's first Android Honeycomb tablet the much-leaked HTC Puccini with it's 10.1-inch screen and dual-core processor. Throw in the HTC Bliss or the 4G HTC Ruby and you'll have a line-up that would have any punter heading to the nearest phone store.

What do you think, will 1 September be the unveiling of the HTC Puccini? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Abandoned HP webOS to hit HTC and Samsung devices?

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 06:49 AM PDT

As HP abandons production of all webOS hardware industry experts exclusively tell T3 rival manufacturers HTC and Samsung could but the operating system

Following the announcement that HP is to cease production of all webOS powered hardware industry experts have suggested the former Palm operating system could be brought out by a rival manufacturer.

HP’s decision to stop producing hardware for the well received webOS operating system has come as a surprise to many within the tech industry with speculation now turning to a possible takeover of the smartphone and tablet operating system.

“I would be surprised if webOS disappears altogether given the developments with Google and Motorola this week,” said Chris Ward of industry retailer Clove Technology talking exclusively with T3. “Hopefully the likes of HTC or Samsung will step in with an offer for it.”

Expanding on the benefits such a deal could have for the likes of HTC and Samsung Ward added: “HP’s decision on webOS could come as good news for the likes of Samsung and HTC. While Google has assured manufacturers that its takeover of Motorola won’t mean that the Android OS is closed off, no doubt it has left some of them feeling a little edgy.

“There had already been the suggestion a couple of months ago of HTC producing webOS devices and with the firm constantly expanding its hardware and software portfolio, it could be a wise move to buy the webOS platform, it’s a great operating system and has a strong following.”

He concluded: “The webOS software on HTC or Samsung hardware would definitely be a winning combination for me. I certainly wouldn't write webOS off based solely on HP's decision to stop making the hardware for it.”

Would you like to see other manufacturers adopt webOS following HP’s disowning of the operating system? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: Apple TV goes literal, men get pregnant

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 06:48 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

The Latest Dictionary Additions
The most recent Concise Oxford English Dictionary includes additions such as "woot", "sexting" and as "retweet". What's worse, though, are the stoic definitions which accompany them. Woot is defined as being "used in electronic communication to express elation, enthusiasm, or triumph", sexting as "sending sexually explicit messages by mobile phone" and retweet as "to forward a message on Twitter". Seems the dictionary is keen to stay down with da kids, innit.

Apple TV goes literal
It's literally an apple, for those who haven't yet clicked. Created by the Taiwanese company Hannspree - who's already infamous for making TV's into the shape of weird stuff - the Hansapple is an upgraded model of an original 2007 release. Retailing at a mere £249, the TV features... erm... nothing you'd expect it to, but it is equipped with Scart connection and a pair of HDMI inputs, meaning it can actually play HD. Don't all climb over eachother for one.

Gears of War 3: Spoilers are bannable offences
Yep, Gears of War 3 officials have promised online gamers "repercussions" if they so much as attempt to reveal the game's plot. Apparantly, they have a banning system, and anyone who posts any leaked footage of the single player campaign on the new release could well incurr a ban. How disappointing. Oh well; you've been warned...

Facebook takes over fridges
A step too far? Fridgebook magnets, which offer the layout of social networking giant Facebook in fridge magnet form, have hit the shelves. Created for those who just can't get enough of facebook, these come with a whiteboard marker, to update your home status. At only $19.95, these magnets are a 'bargain' ...apparently. Facebook's quest for world domination continues.

Blackberry's Android disaster
The Blackberry Torch 9860 will be the first fully touchscreen phone supporting Blackberry 7 OS. However, in the video released to promote the Torch, it becomes apparent that for a couple of the shots in the video an Android phone - recognisable not least for the 'home' button - was used as the Torch's double. A foolish, some might say baffling, error from RIM.

Men's Pregnancy qualms solved
After the initial few months of elation following the good news, the real pain of genuinely carrying another human starts to set in. Ankles swell and waistlines enlargen, yet most women stay strong throughout. This new invention from the Kanagawa Institute of Technology (KAIT) is designed to fill with water, to show the male in the relationship the struggles of being pregnant. When rubbed, this "Mommy Tummy" is supposed to start moving, simulating kicking. Right you are, then.

And Finally...

UNThink tells Facebook to stuff it
...And Google+, while it's at it. It seems that the riotous new social 'revolution' is a bit sick and tired of privacy issues and being told what to do...

Sony Digital Binoculars are 'world first'

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 04:29 AM PDT

Making the claim that your product is a 'new page in binocular history' you either need to know how odd that sounds or have a pretty good product, Sony thinks the latter.

Sony's Digital Recording Binoculars are the 'world's first' binoculars that can take both HD video and snaps while still offering the same specs as a premium pair of binoculars.

The DEV-3 and DEV-5 are the two models in question with the differences between the two being that the DEV-5 ups the magnification from 10x to 20x and adds GPS tagging as well. For those additional features you'll be looking at paying a premium of around £300, quite a hefty sum of money we think you'll agree.

Both products however use two 'Exmor R' CMOS sensors which means each eyepiece can record a separate image, this then allows HD 3D recording. The lenses can also take 7.1MP images and with Sony's stabilisation system on board you'll be able to take crystal clear images even at 20x magnification.

Not sure when they'll hit UK shores but expect to pay a price of around £1400 for the DEV-3 and £1900 for the DEV-5. What do you think, is that eye-watering price justified or not? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Samsung IFA 2011 teaser hints at new smartphone

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 04:21 AM PDT

Samsung teaser video offers glimpse at Galaxy S II follow-up to be unveiled at IFA 2011

Ahead of the 2011 IFA expo, Samsung has released a new product video teasing a new handset it plans to unveil at the Berlin-based show.

Whilst the teaser trailer offers little in terms of a visual offering of the IFA bound handset, the video ends with the tagline “Something big is coming” before offering up September 1st as the device’s date of arrival.

Following the phenomenal success of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a handset that has outsold the Apple iPhone 4 in the UK over the past three months to become the nation’s favourite smartphone, Samsung is expected to unveil another industry powerhouse with the repeatedly leaked Android Ice Cream Sandwich handset a likely candidate.

Tipped as sporting a 1.4GHz dual-core processor the mooted Samsung Ice Cream Sandwich handset is expected to launch as the next Nexus device with Android 2.4 and monstrous 4.65-inch 720p HD display.

Other tech offerings expected to be made by Samsung at this year’s IFA expo include a revamped 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab with the second-generation device to boast a Retina style display.

What features would you like to see land on Samsung’s next flagship handset? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HP halts production of the TouchPad and Pre hardware

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 02:53 AM PDT

HP TouchPad and Pre users given the cold shoulder by Hewlett Packard as the company announces it is to cease production of all webOS hardware

Hewlett Packard has made a shock announcement confirming it is to cease production of all webOS hardware including its range of Pre handsets and the recently launched HP TouchPad.

The move, which is to take immediate effect, will see HP halt production of its full range of webOS powered mobile devices in order to focus on “the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group.”

“HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones,” an official release from Hewlett Packard said. “HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.”

Hitting UK stores less than two months ago HP’s attempted iPad killer the HP TouchPad failed to spark interest with consumers with limited apps and a price comparable to its Apple branded rival seemingly damning the device from launch.

Packing a 1.2GHz dual-core processor  the HP TouchPad ran version 3.0 of the webOS operating system as well as sporting a 9.7-inch display and a 1.3-megapixel camera. Earlier this week HP launched the HP Pre 3 in the UK to little fanfare.

With HP ceasing production of all webOS hardware the company is to launch a $10 billion buyout for software firm Autonomy.

Were you one of the few to snap up the HP TouchPad early, how have you found the webOS tablet and are you now concerned about a lack of support for the system? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

RIM working on BlackBerry music service

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 12:48 AM PDT

Music service coming to BlackBerry - details thin on the ground.

Research In Motion are reportedly planning to launch a dedicated music service for BlackBerry users, according to anonymous sources on the interweb.

Apparently in talks with at least four major record companies - Universal, Sony, Warner and EMI - the music service will reportedly integrate with BlackBerry's BBM messenger service, although details on just what that will entail are sketchy.

An anonymous source told PCWorld.com that the service will grant BlackBerry users access to "50 songs at a time", although whether that means 50 songs per day, week, month or other time period isn't clear. We may not have long to wait to find out, however, as according to the Wall Street Jounral, the service may launch as early as next week. RIM, predictably, are holding the company line and refusing to comment on "rumour and specualtion."

It's not a lot to go on, but our question is with established music services for other mobile operating systems so far along, is BlackBerry getting into the music game too late? With the BlackBerry PlayBook and the launch of its first QNX-powered handset just around the corner, it looks like 'Berry are putting all their chips down on the developments of the next few months.

Rage game free on iPhone and iPad this week

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 12:21 AM PDT

Mutant bashing shoot-em-up gratis for seven days.

id Software - the John Carmack-fronted developer responsible for the original Doom and therefore, indirectly, the state of first person shooters today - has announced that its iOS FPS Rage will be free in the App Store for a week.

Usually priced at £1.19, the special offer comes as a thankyou to fans after a campaign to get the game 100,000 likes on its Facebook page.

Rage puts players in the blood-soaked boots of a contestant on 'Mutant Bash TV', a gameshow from a dystopian future where people are pitted against murderous mutants for the entertainment of the masses. Think Jersey Shore with assault weapons.

Rage was one of the first iOS games we ever reviewed on the T3 App Chart, scoring it five stars and calling it "the best-looking mobile game we've yet seen." If you didn't heed our advice the first time around (and if not, why not?), grab it from the App Store now and get stuck in.

Huawei own-brand phones coming to Phones 4U

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 12:03 AM PDT

Phones 4U calls Huawei deal a "massive opportunity."

Chinese white label phone producers Huawei announced last week that it would be launching its own-brand line of mobiles and tablets across the world, including the UK. Now, Phones 4U have confirmed that it will stock the first two handsets from the company, the Blaze and the Vision.

The deal between Huawei and Phones4U will give the retailer a period of exclusivity with the Blaze, while Phones4U is currently the only company signed on to sell the Vision at all.

Phones 4U trading director Scott Hooton called the partnership a "massive opportunity", saying that it will add "more innovation and choice for [Phones 4U] customers", especially the youth market, at which the cheaper Huawei phones are aimed.

Phones 4U will stock both the Blaze and the Vision sometime before the end of the year (we've heard September), although no specific release dates or pricing have been announced.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray coming soon on Vodafone

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 11:37 PM PDT

Titchy tiny Xperia Ray smartphone incoming.

Vodafone has become the first UK carrier to confirm it will be stocking the upcoming Xpera Ray, launching a sign up page to update would-be customers on the smartphone's UK launch.

The Xperia Ray is running in the opposite direction to the most recent slew of top end smartphones, eschewing a massive touchscreen in favour of a more dainty 3.3-inch display. Don't let the size fool you, however - wrapped up in that slim shell is an 8MP camera, a 1GHz processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It's not going to compete with the Galaxy S2 or the next iPhone, but it's shaping up to be quite the midrange blower.

Vodafone don't list any more specific information on the site, beyond the fact that the handset will be available in gold as an alternative to the standard Smartphone Black. Interested parties can sign up for updates with Vodafone at the link below, and watch our Xperia Ray review video here.
