iPhone 5 features wish list revealed by consumer poll

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 04:07 AM PDT

A list of the iPhone 5 release day features most wanted by the public has been revealed

With the expected iPhone 5 release date inching ever nearer a new consumer poll has revealed the public’s expectations for the next-generation Apple handset with a thinner handset the most wanted feature.

The study, carried out by GoodMobilePhones.co.uk, questioned 1,786 consumers over the age of 18 what features they would most like to see land on iPhone 5 release day with a thinner handset topping the list of 48 per cent of those questioned.

A longer battery life and larger memory were the second and third most popular options with 45 per cent and 39 per cent of consumers respectively ahead of a lighter handset and faster internet capabilities.

Following last year’s antennagate scandal better signal capabilities lined up as the sixth most hoped for iPhone 5 feature with a higher camera resolution, better email facilities, a waterproof handset and compatibility with HD movies completing the top ten.

With iPhone 5 rumours heating up, latest reports have suggested a thinner handset is in the works with a 1GHz dual-core processor to bring added clout and an 8-megaxpiel camera to appease those hoping for a higher resolution camera.

What features would you most like to see touchdown with the Apple iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC and Beats by Dr. Dre announce partnership that will see smartphone audio improved

Leading smartphone manufacturer HTC has unveiled a partnership with Beats that will see the iconic Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology included within the Taiwanese company’s handsets.

Reportedly set for inclusion in a new range of presumably audio-centric handsets later this year the new deal will see the Beats audio experience which has previously featured in HP laptops come to smartphones for the first time.

“For Beats by Dr. Dre, this represents a critical step in our continued mission to clean up the destruction of audio caused by the digital revolution; and reengineer how sound is delivered so that the consumer feels the music the way that the artist intended,” said Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of Beats by Dr. Dre.

We obsess over every detail of a consumer’s mobile experience and audio is a critical part of that experience,” said HTC CEO Peter Chou. He added: “Beats has found a unique way to harness popular culture in a manner that is unlike any other brand today. It’s an exciting brand that has been built around providing something very special, and we believe our strategic partnership will provide customers with unbeatable sound on HTC phones.

Would the inclusion of Beats audio technology tempt you into buying one handset over another? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LG Optimus Sol leaked video

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:30 AM PDT

German tech blog goes hands-on with unreleased LG phone.

A prototype of LG's upcoming Optimus Sol, a mid-range smartphone due for release sometime before the end of the year, has cropped up on German tech site BestBoyz.

Previously known by its codename 'Victor', the Optimus Sol was one of the several handsets leaked back in July when LG's 2011 product roadmap was outed online.

The Optimus Sol packs a 3.8-inch AMOLED display, a 1GHz processor, a 5MP camera and will come running Gingerbread with a custom LG UI layered over the top. According to BestBoyz, the phone will launch in both black and silver models, with pricing in Europe set at around 299 Euros.

No word on release date as yet, although that leaked roadmap put the launch at sometime in Q3 this year, so expect to hear more on the Sol in the coming weeks.

Orange and T-Mobile to hand over rioters' data

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:10 AM PDT

Companies pledge to help track down rioters and accomplices.

Everything Everywhere, the parent company which owns Orange and T-Mobile, has confirmed that it is working with police to help catch rioters and looters using their mobiles during the recent riots across the UK.

Invoking the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), police have asked Everything Everywhere to turn over information on phone calls made by rioters, including where the calls were made, who the calls were made to and who the phone is registered to.

Everything everywhere is the second major mobile service provider to pledge assistance to the police, after BlackBerry announced yesterday that they too would be turning over data on users who had used the encrypted BlackBerry Messaging (BBM) service to organise the rioting.

Amazon launches Kindle Cloud Reader web app

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 11:46 PM PDT

Amazon abandons Apple with online Kindle reading.

After removing the link to the Kindle Store from the official iOS Kindle app at Apple's behest, Amazon have come up with a way to bypass Jobs & Co.'s App Store altogether: the Kindle Cloud Reader.

Amazon removed the link, which allowed users to browse for and purchase new ebooks from within the Kindle app, after a spat with Apple over its rules on in-app purchasing. Put simply, Apple doesn't allow it, unless the company that owns the apps turns over a share of the profits.

The Kindle Cloud Reader neatly sidesteps the need for the app at all. Now, Kindle users wanting to access their digital library need only go to read.amazon.com to be greeted with an online version of Kindle. Users log in to the service with their Amazon account details, and then have access to every purchase they've made for reading on their desktop, laptop or iPad (iPhone and Android devices are currently not supported, but are reportedly on the way).

Currently, the Cloud Reader service is only available to those using Chrome or Safari (other browsers are met with a message saying the browser isn't supported yet). This makes the Cloud Reader available to anyone with a PC, Mac or Chromebook, and just to rub Apple's nose in it, iPad (on which it works almost indistinguishably from the iPad Kindle app). Web connection is also not essential, as the Cloud Reader features an offline mode so users can keep reading should their web access cut out just as the hero squares up to the evil uncle or starts getting squiffy with the princess.
