iPad app news: Apple relaxing sexual content rules?

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 12:51 PM PDT

"Skinemax" brings uncensored sex to the App Store.

Apple has, somewhat surprisingly, approved an iPad app from US pay-TV service Cinemax, which brings with it a host of soft-porn movies and TV series.

The Max Go app from Cinematic, which is available free to subscribers of the network, also features the Max After Dark series, which offers delights like "sizzling adult series" Lingerie, Sin City Diaries, and skin flicks like The Hills Have Thighs.

The nod of approval from Apple represents a major swerve from its strict no-tolerance policy when it comes to sexual content, having binned a host of high profile apps down the years while forcing the likes of Playboy to censor its App Store content.

"Apps containing pornographic material, defined by Webster's Dictionary as 'explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings', will be rejected."

So has Apple decided to relax its stance and offer the opportunity for more sexual content on the App Store, or is it only a matter of time before "Skinemax" shares the same fate as other banned iPad apps.

One distinguising factor for the service, owned by HBO, is that it requires a cable TV subscription to the Cinemax network in order to access any of the content. For now, the app lives on.

Vodafone 555 Facebook phone goes on sale

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 09:27 AM PDT

After seeing the likes of the HTC Cha Cha and others appear, the popularity in social networks has clearly made an impact. Now Vodafone's involved with its own version the 555 Facebook phone.

Vodafone has released the Vodafone 555 Facebook phone, a budget handset which it hopes will cash in on the popularity of social networks.

The phone is definitely a budget handset, offering a non-touchscreen 2.4-inch display along with a QWERTY keyboard and of course, the dedicated Facebook button. Vodafone has put its own operating system on it, breaking the current trend to go with Androids earlier incarnations.

On the back you'll find a 2-megapixel camera with flash and with only 2G built-in you'll be limited to browsing the web on, at best, EDGE. The Vodafone 555 is available now and can be bought without a SIM for £62.50, however you'll only be able to use a Vodafone SIM with the phone.

What do you think, is the Vodafone 555 just the network cashing in or is it a trendy cheap alternative to social networking? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

3G Apple MacBook Pro leaks via prototype unit on eBay

Apple MacBook Pro 3G leaks as prototype units hits eBay

Apple’s plans to launch a 3G capable MacBook Pro device have leaked online after a prototype unit was made available to buy on auction site eBay.

The device, which it is said was created in 2007 as part of plans from the Cupertino-based tech giant to launch a range of 3G able MacBooks features the same 15.4-inch 1440 x 900p LCD display as released models of the time but adds 3G connectivity capabilities via a retractable 3G antenna and SIM card slot.

Whilst Steve Jobs announced back in 2008 that Apple “considered” a range of MacBooks with 3G connectivity the company failed to launch the devices as they would have left consumers restricted to a single network.

At the time of writing the 3G capable MacBook Pro has received 94 bids with the prototype unit currently going for $30,100.99 with more than three days of bidding remaining.

Would 3G connectivity be a welcome addition to Apple’s range of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air devices? Share your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Football Manager 2012: First details announced

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 08:53 AM PDT

Football Manager 2012 is coming and it's more distracting than ever before offering over 800 new features, all aimed at making it the most realistic incarnation of the series yet

The hit football simulation series Football Manager is set to return in full force with Football Manager 2012, offering it's most advanced interface and with a casually impressive 800+ features to boot.

Having sold over 7 million copies worldwide, the Football Manager series is set to take things a step further with their latest version. Of the key changes the transfer system will be of notable interest, there's much more cover of the amatuer and youth contracts, while the addition of loyalty bonuses and the ability to lock certain areas of negotiation make it easier for you to get exactly the deal you want.

In other areas the game will see big changes, the layout in particular has undergone a major overhaul with different screen resolutions automatically changing the number of panels on the screen making sure all the windows are crystal clear. Taking cues from social networking apps, the new layout has customisable columns and filters which mean only the news you need to see will get through to you.

Finally the match engine has been given a hefty revamp, new animations, increased and more realistic weather conditions, two new stadiums and two new camera angles (Behind Goal and Director Cam) will all be in place to help you analyse your teams performance. In truth, there are so many new additions to the game that it would take more than this news post to even cover half.

There's no official word on when the game will be hitting the shelves but Sega have promised it'll be out before Christmas, making sure you'll be spending the winter holidays doing little else. What do you think, is Football Manager 2012 going to be the best one yet? Let us know what you think on Twitter and Facebook.

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 08:10 AM PDT

HTC's next-generation flagship handset has leaked again with the HTC Vigor outed as the first device to land with Beats by Dr. Dre audio

The repeatedly leaked HTC Vigor has made yet another premature appearance this time popping up as the first device to feature the Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology.

Following last week’s announcement that HTC has brought a controlling stake in audio specialist Beats, the upcoming HTC VIgor handset has leaked as the first smartphone to come packing the Beats by Dr. Dre audio experience, seemingly confirming rumours to the same effect.

Leaking via Dutch smartphone retailer The Phone House, the HTC Vigor has appeared with a claimed 1.5GHz dual-core processor as well as a massive 4.3-inch display with a stunning 1280 X 720p HD resolution.

Other features attributed to the Vigor by the online retailer include an 8-megapixel camera and version 2.3.4 of Google’s Gingerbread OS. Whilst a HTC Vigor UK release date and pricing has yet to be announced, if indeed the first handset to run Beats we will be seeing the Vigor hits stores before the end of the year.

Apple HQ images give detailed look at Spaceship campus

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Apple's proposed Spaceship HQ in Cupertino has appeared in a number of newly released in-depth pictures

Having unveiled plans for its new ‘Spaceship’ campus in Cupertino California earlier this year Apple has released a series of new images of how its new HQ will look once construction is complete.

Set to be built on a 98 acres plot of land it acquired from tech rival HP, the new Apple campus is to feature a curved-glass construct and will play host to some 13,000 employees of the iPad and iPhone maker once completed in 2015.

With construction looking to begin next year following the sign off from all relevant planning authorities, the Spaceship-esque Apple headquarters will feature acres of apricot orchards with green credentials to be further plumped by using natural gas and clean energy as its primary power source.

The newly released images offer a more detailed look at the proposed campus where it is likely some of the next-generation of the world’s most popular gadgets will come to life.

Google buys Motorola in $12.5 billion takeover

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 05:13 AM PDT

Google confirms Motorola buyout that will see the search giant back up its Android OS with high-end custom hardware

Google has agreed to a $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola as the search engine giant looks to further cement its position in the mobile market and actively compete with Apple on the software and hardware front.

The deal, which will see Google pay $40 (£24.50) in cash per share of Motorola, marks a gamechanging moment in the mobile and smartphone industry with the $12.5 billion (£7.66 billion) buyout marking a 63 per cent increase on the closing price of Motorola shares on Friday.

“Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies,” said Google CEO Larry Page. “Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”

Whilst the buyout will no doubt have some concerned that Google will cease supporting Android on other handsets following its Motorola acquisition the company’s Senior Vice President of Mobile, Andy Rubin has spoken out to reassure users of the OS.

“We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices.”

Will the Google Motorola buyout see a new dominant force in the smartphone market and knock Apple from its lofty perch? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

App games do not threaten console titles says expert

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 03:54 AM PDT

The continued rise in smartphone and tablet app-based gaming will not have a negative effect on the sale of console titles, an industry expert has told T3.

With Nintendo 3DS sales flailing and app-based games soaring in popularity, Steve Perlman, CEO of cloud gaming service OnLive has suggested that the rise in app titles will actually have a positive effect on dedicated games consoles.

"App-based games aren't a threat, I see it as very complimentary to the industry as tablet games are severely limited in what they can do," said Perlman.

As well as their specifications limitations, Perlman suggests smartphone and tablet app games are restricted by a series of key security issues. “Tablets see between 80 per cent and 90 per cent piracy with game apps and Android by its nature is an open platform,” the OnLive CEO said.

Looking to bridge the gap between console and app-based games, OnLive, which is to launch in the UK on September 22nd will see gamers able to play full console titles on their iPads and Android touting tablets.

What is your favourite app-based game? Can it compete with your top console titles in terms of entertainment and longevity? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release to see Apple ship 20 million handsets?

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 03:21 AM PDT

iPhone 5 release hinted at by large Apple handset orders

Apple is preparing itself for the iPhone 5 release date with orders of the eagerly awaited handset being increased ahead of huge fourth quarter sales predictions, new reports have claimed.

Despite suggesting Apple has lowered its iPhone 5 order volumes for the third quarter to 5.5 million units, down from 7 million, Chinese tech sire Digi Times has claimed Apple is to ship 20 million of its next-generation handsets in the year’s final three month period.

Whilst the lower third quarter shipping figures hint at a possible delay to the iPhone 5 launch, if accurate the huge fourth quarter quantities would see Apple’s handset quickly become the most popular device on the market.

With the iPhone 5 UK release date still shrouded in mystery latest iPhone 5 rumours have suggested the mooted device will launch in September with an Apple announcement tipped to be held on September 7th.

Further suggested iPhone 5 specs have seen the smartphone touted with supporting a 1GHz dual-core processor, slimmer form factor with a curved back and edge-to-edge display as well as an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities.

What features would you like to see Apple include in the iPhone 5 and when do you expect to see the device land? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

FIFA 12 better than PES 2012 says T3 readers

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 02:39 AM PDT

The votes have been counted and so far it looks as though FIFA 12 will be the game of choice for many of you, with PES 2012 relegated to second.

Each week we ask you a question on one of the hot tech topics of the month and last week's was a corker: FIFA 12 vs PES 2012. The results are in and although neither games have been released yet anticipation alone has clearly been enough as FIFA 12 has steamed through to victory over its main rival Pro Evolution Soccer 2012.

The game so far has managed to coin a mightily impressive 66% of the votes with the improved physics engine and the new dribbling techniques clearly making an impression. Combine this with the prospect of EA Football Club, the online arena in which players take their teams to glory, and you've got a package that's out to impress.

That said it wasn't a complete walkover with Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 gaining a respectable 465 votes or 33%, and with the media hype around the Konami title being perhaps a bit quieter that doesn't mean it won't come out on top. For now though, it'll have to make do with second place as the T3 readers have spoken.

Zumba Fitness tops gaming charts for ninth straight week

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 02:38 AM PDT

Zumba beats off competition from LEGO titles to hold on to top spot in the UK All Format Gaming Charts

Continuing its run of domination, dance exercise game Zumba Fitness has recorded its ninth successive week atop the UK All Format Gaming Chart, its 12th week in total.

With more than three million copies sold worldwide 505’s Zumba Fitness has notched up more than two straight months atop the UK gaming chart following a steady release back in April.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean rose from fifth to second in the charts during the past week thanks to a number of price promotions whilst Cars 2 maintained its third spot for another week. DiRT 3 slipped from second to fourth with FIFA 11 rounding out the top five ahead of the start of the new football season.

Continuing the building block success LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 lands in sixth with Just Dance 2: Extra Songs, Call of Juarez: The Cartel and The Sims 3 in positions seven through nine respectively. LA Noire hangs on to complete the top ten.

What was your game of the past week be it video, app-based or board? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and while your at it let us know what game you think will be the next to dislodge Zumba Fitness.

HP Pre 3 support page live on Orange website

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 12:39 AM PDT

Pre 2 follow-up landing imminently on Orange?

The grapevine had gone quiet on the progress of the HP Pre 3 (follow-up to the erstwhile Palm Pre 2), and for a while now we'd been fearing the worst. But several months after we first caught wind of the keyboard-happy smartphone, Orange have put up an official support page for the Pre 3 on their website, suggesting the Pre 3 lives on in more than just our hearts.

The last we'd heard about the Pre 3 was back in February, when we outed its specs and pegged its release date at sometime this summer. Sadly, we were a little over-optimistic with the specs: instead of a 1.4GHz single-core processor, the Pre 3 actually runs at 1.2GHz, and instead of a choice of 8GB or 16GB of storage, Orange is only listing the smaller 8GB option on the phones specs page. Boo.

Apart from this, the specs we got were bang on the money: a 3.6-inch screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels, a 5MP camera and the famous slide-out keyboard are all present and correct, as is the webOS 2.2 operating system. It's no iPhone 5 (we hope), but as a mid-range smartphone it might tempt a few business-minded users away from BlackBerry.

Orange doesn't list a release date on the site, but with this page up it can't be far off. In the meantime, take a look at the HP Pre 3 courtesy of Orange below.

Windows Phone 7 Mango finished build leaks

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 12:06 AM PDT

Compatible phone and patience of a saint required.

Microsoft haven't been great about keeping the lid on details of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Mango update, what with slip-up tweets about the update's coming in September and screenshots cropping up online showing the update's Windows Live Messenger integration. But as of this morning, the entire OS is available online for evil pirate-y types to download gratis.

Updating a phone to Mango using this shady build is a relatively complex, 20-step process that reportedly takes between one-and-a-half and two hours, and handsets so far confirmed by PCmag to work with the update include the HTC HD7, HTC Mozart, HTC Trophy and the LG Optimus 7.

The leaked build has, of course, revealed some further details about what the update includes. For web-browsing, the graphics have been bumped up a notch, and HTML5 support has been included. Bing search will also now let users seach for things in their GPS-determined area, a bit like Google Places. Pointing your phone's camera at products and places will also bring back information on the subject a la Google Goggles.

The official release of Mango has been pegged tentatively by the web as September 7th. Check out our hands-on video with the WP7 update below.

Bing and Yahoo more effective than Google search

Posted: 14 Aug 2011 11:47 PM PDT

Bing and Yahoo pull ahead in successful search rate.

Despite its stranglehold on the search engine market, new research has suggested that Google may not be as effective at trawling the web than its competitors Yahoo and Bing.

While two thirds of searches conducted online in July were done through Google, online "competetive intelligence" (nope, us neither) company Experian Hitwise claims that only 68% of those actually resulted in users clicking through to a link Google had brought back, marking a successful search. Yahoo and Bing, on the other hand, both garnered more than an 80% success rate, suggesting users abandoning Google in favour of the two underdogs actually find it easier to get what they want out of the web.

Not that these figures will trouble Google much. Microsoft's Bing accounted for just under 13.9% of searches in the US in July, with Yahoo taking 14.9%, leaving Google far in the lead before we even get to its other web services like Youtube, Translate, Maps and Gmail. But if it's accuracy you're after, the experts have spoken.

HTC Holiday prototype revealed

Posted: 14 Aug 2011 11:27 PM PDT

New HTC flagship on the horizon?

The HTC Holiday - the 4.5-inch screen toting handset that was leaked by PocketLint back in May - has now had snaps of prototpye leaked, and bar a disfiguring 'California' sticker on its rear, it's a typically pretty HTC affair.

The Holiday had been rumoured to trump everything in the HTC lineup bar the Evo 3D in terms of specs, packing a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and an 8MP rear camera. This leaked shot of the phone's hardware information screen apparently confirms all that, along with Bluetooth 3.0.

We're not sure what the relevance of the aforementioned California sticker is, but we'd guess it's nothing more than a way of keeping track of which phone's gone to whom, in a bid to make sure no-one paps any photos of the handset and puts them up online. Oh wait.
