News@8pm: iPhone 5 pictures and Amazon Tablet release

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Amazon’s forthcoming Android tablet was once again teased as having an Autumn release. According to Taiwanese news source Cens, Amazon will produce three million units in October. And thanks to a developer from the inventive XDA forum, you can now connect up your Canon EOS camera with your Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone and gain full access to the camera’s functionality.

In gaming news, ahead of its October 7th release, Bathesda has released a new gameplay trailer of its upcoming game Rage. Titled ‘Uprising’, the trailer revealed some key storyline elements as well as some ultra gory shootouts.  And if you just can’t get enough of your FPS’s and love yourself a little Sly Stallone action, then good news because a Rambo video game is on its way to be released at an undisclosed date on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

It was reported today that Motorola’s new XT531 Fire might have an autumn release and has been tipped to sport the latest version of Android. In other phone gossip, with only 49 short days to go, Nokia’s new super slim 3.9 inch N9 has been confirmed to have a release date of September 23rd.

In an unanticipated swerve of events, new iPhone 5 pictures leaked today suggest that Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 5 will be redesigned ahead of its release date, sporting an entirely new form factor. Having sprung up on MacRumours forums, the pic reportedly came from inside a mobile carrier’s office in France. Some tightened security is in order perhaps.

iPhone 5 design change hinted at by leaked Apple parts

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 08:16 AM PDT

Apple is expected to change the iPhone's design ahead of the iPhone 5 release date with a new form factor hinted at by leaked parts

A leaked proximity light sensor reportedly set for inclusion within Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 release has suggested the mooted handset will sport a newly designed form factor.

The proximity sensor which was acquired by SW-Box.com, who claim the component will feature in the iPhone 5, boasts a number of design differences to the part that appeared in the iPhone 4 suggesting Apple is to refresh the iPhone’s form factor ahead of the iPhone 5 release date.

Despite Apple having yet to even confirm the existence of iPhone 5 rumours have surrounded the handset’s expected arrival for a number of months with repeated reports suggesting the device is to sport a new slim, rounded edge form factor.

Other iPhone 5 rumours have seen the Apple handset pegged with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8-megaxpixel camera with 1080p Full HD video capabilities and even support for NFC technologies.

Android app news: Canon DSLR Controller app wows

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 07:38 AM PDT

One of the most inventive apps we've seen in a while.

A developer from the inventive XDA forum has produced a DSLR Controller app using his Samsung Galaxy S II and Canon EOS camera.

The DSLR Controller allows pretty much unprecedented access to the camera's functionality through the touchscreen of the Android smartphone, just by hooking up the two devices through a USB Host cable.

The gorgeous homemade app, which is now available on the Android Market, allows you to see a live view from the viewfinder, and offers easy access to settings like exposure, white balance, zoom, ISO speed and apeture, through simple touchscreen controls.

Better still, you can use the touchscreen to change the point of focus, just like you do on the iPhone and, of course, take pictures.

The app is still in beta at the moment and will only work on handsets that have a USB Host capability (That means the Galaxy SII and some Honeycomb tablets) and with Canon DSLRs.

It's still early days, so this app is bound to become available for more devices and more cameras in the future. Check it out in the video below.

Weird News: Gameboy dresses and Lego in Space

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last 7 days

Radio-Controlled model truck saves lives
A Traxxis Stampede radio-controlled truck with a wireless camera attached to its roof has inadvertently saved the life of 6 Soldiers in Afghanistan after it got tangled in a trip wire which led to 500lbs of explosives. This little gadget can travel faster than the trucks the soldiers operate, and this one has found 4 IEDs since they got it.

Game Boy strapless dress exists
Look at it! Just look at the thing! Is that not the weirdest clothing thing you’ve seen this year? And why is the model staring so vacantly into nothingness? Perhaps she’s questioning her decisions in life? Apparel line HereandThereVintage has designed this little 'retro' number, which is retailing at a highly reasonable $70. We’re not exactly sure who would feel comfortable wearing this in public. Are grey and brown ‘in’ this season?

Turn your 'glitter into litter'
If it seems too bizarre to be true, it normally is. Cats4gold launched this week, tricking an increasing number of Brits into thinking that they can actually swap their gold for real life cats. The website claims that its exchange rate cannot be beaten anywhere else...well, it is the only website that offers cats as payment, after all. That CGI Meer Kat has a lot to answer for.

Mini Lego figures on board spacecraft to Jupiter
Three 1.5 inch Legonauts modelled on Galileo Galilei, the Roman god Jupiter and his wife Juno are journeying to Jupiter on NASA’s Juno Spacecraft. These commissioned Aluminium figures cost a whopping $15,000, and will not arrive at Jupiter until 2016, at which point you will have completely forgotten that you ever read this. But, nonetheless, you read it here first.

World's smallest battery
Researchers at Rice University (yep – it’s a real place) have created a battery 60,000 times smaller than a single AAA battery, which will be used to power miniature electronic devices. This invention will probably have an impact on the size of our beloved tech, making them thinner and smaller then ever. Even if you do end up having to charge them every 8 minutes.

Wine tasting robot
This curious invention from Barcelona University has the ability to identify different types of sparking wines based on their sugar content through a sensor system and mathematical algorithm. It’s thought that this gadget’s main use will be detecting defects during the wine-making process, meaning we may start seeing a few more sommeliers down the job centre. Good to know that this is where tax money ends up.

And finally…

MTV tries to describe this new 'internet' thing
This is how you explain the internet to generation X. What the hell is a ‘virtual truck stop?’ Is T3 one? We need to rethink our mission statement if so. The coffee here is terrible.

Amazon tablet release date to see 3m units ship in October?

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 04:53 AM PDT

The Amazon tablet release date has once again been teased with an October arrival

New rumours have added weight behind the expected October Amazon tablet release date with the mooted Android device once again reported as heading for the autumn arrival.

According to reports from Taiwanese news sources Cens, Amazon is employ Quanta, the company responsible for manufacturing the company’s Kindle device to produce its first tablet with three million units reportedly being readied for an October release.

Little is currently known about the mooted Amazon tablet with recent rumours suggesting the online retailer was planning to launch both 7-inch and 10.1-inch tablets, both of which are likely to run Google’s tablet centric Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS.

Whilst it is widely predicted that any 10-inch Amazon tablet would boast an LCD display, some reports have suggested the currently mythical iPad challenger will land with a screen that can switch between LCD and E-ink style in order to save battery and offer a variety of functionality. Such technology, however, is still believed to be some years off.

Could an Android powered Amazon tablet rival Apple’s iPad 2 atop the tablet market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

FIFA 12 hype is reaching fever pitch as EA Sports pulls out all the stops

EA Sports has revealed a new video interview with Real Madrid star Kaka on how he feels to be on the cover of FIFA 12, what he likes to do in his spare time and just generally showing what a nice guy he is.

The community video is one of a series of trailers and videos which will be aiming to maximise the hype surrounding what EA hope will be their biggest FIFA game yet. The title is also packed full of new features including a huge online mode called 'Football Club' in which players can win tournaments and check out stats of both themselves and their friends. Google Plus tops 25 million users

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 03:36 AM PDT

So it's grown faster than Facebook and Twitter, but analysts say it's still early days

Google Plus has managed to accrue nearly 25 million users, smashing records set by it's two main rivals with Facebook taking 3 years to get to that point.

However analysts are saying that it's early days, and with no brands or advertising the website will need to prove that it can reach consumers in a way that Twitter and Facebook can't. Google are feeling confident about this however, with Ford as their official guinea pig they're looking to make sure it not only hits the spot with users but also companies looking to utilise Google Plus.

The social networking site aims to provide a fresh perspective by offering users features such as Circles, a way of sorting your friends and acquantancies into groups. There's also Sparks, a new way of finding interests and then connecting with people who share those interests.

Will Google Plus come out on top or is it trying to climb too steep a hill? Join the debate on Facebook and Twitter.

Free Wi-fi on London buses in pipeline

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 03:15 AM PDT

He may be considered a bit eccentric, but we see nothing wrong with Boris Johnson's latest scheme

London's iconic red buses could well be fitted with wi-fi by 2012, offering the public internet access on the move. This plan is just one part of the Mayoral office's 'Wi-fi London' project to make the capital completely wireless by 2012.

A spokesperson for the Mayor's office revealed that the plan is to start with bus stops as they're positioning is often easily within range of the required cabling. Then the next stage would be placing wi-fi on the buses themselves.

This is not the first time public wifi has been considered for the capital, there are already plans to install wi-fi in the London Underground network as well as using steet furniture such as lamposts to set up hotspots all over the capital.

Combine this with the news that Virgin Media recently announced it would be rolling out free public wi-fi in parts of London and it would appear as though Boris' plan is truly coming to fruition.

What do you think, will London becoming a 'wireless city' be a good thing? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

Nokia N9 release date set by Nokia as September 23rd

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 03:05 AM PDT

The Nokia N9 release date has been confirmed by a countdown clock with the MeeGo handset to land on September 23rd

Nokia’s official Swedish website has revealed the Nokia N9 release date with a countdown clock suggesting the company’s first MeeGo OS touting handset will launch on September 23rd.

Currently showing just under 49 days until the handsets release the Nokia countdown hints very strongly at a September 23rd release for the Nokia N9, a super slim handset that is to land sporting a 3.9-inch AMOLED display with gorilla glass coating for added protection.

Whilst previous reports had suggested the high-end handset would land in the UK on September 15th, the official Nokia release information seems to have dispelled such rumours.

Boasting an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens the Nokia N9 will be the first MeeGo powered handset to come from the Finnish phone manufacturer and will touch down with 16GB or 64GB storage capacities.

Nokia is expected to back up its N9 MeeGo release with the arrival of its first Windows Phone 7 touting handset just weeks later with the WP7 device to land alongside the Mango update for the Microsoft OS.

Which OS will help bolster Nokia’s flailing smartphone offerings MeeGo or Windows Phone 7? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone makes Apple world's largest smartphone seller

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 02:24 AM PDT

Apple ships more handsets than Samsung and Nokia to become world's leading smartphone vendor

Apple has become the world’s largest smartphone seller surpassing the likes of Samsung and Nokia to take the coveted crown, figures compiled by market analyst IDC have revealed.

Announcing the smartphone market grew by 65.4 per cent during the second quarter of 2011 the IDC report has also suggested Apple became the world’s leading smartphone supplier in the three month period up to June of this year.

"The smartphone market crowned a new leader in 2Q11, and its name is Apple," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team. Apple is reported to have shipped 20.3 million smartphone handsets in Q2 of 2011 ahead of Samsung’s 17.3 million devices and the 16.7 million units shipped by Nokia.

"Ever since the first iPhone launched in 2007, Apple has made market-setting strides in hardware, software, and channel development to grab mindshare and market share," Llamas added. "Demand has been so strong that even models that have been out for one or two years are still being sought out. With an expected refresh later this year, volumes are set to reach higher levels."

Apple’s share of the smartphone market looks set to be bolstered during Q3 with the expected iPhone 5 release date to see the Cupertino-based company challenge the Samsung Galaxy S II in the dual-core smartphone stakes.

Rambo video game on the way

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 02:17 AM PDT

The man who has beef with quite literally everyone is heading to the gaming world

Game publishers Reef Entertainment have confirmed that they have won the rights to create a Rambo game, beating other publishers in buying the rights from film company Studio Canal.

The first three films alone have cashed in on $600 million, so it would only be a matter of time before someone realised it would probably be a good idea to take him beyond the silver screen.  Reef's CEO Peter Rezon was keen to highlight the current trend where good old-fashioned action flicks are taking the cinemas by storm following the success of the latest Rambo and the Expendables.

Set to be made for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC the title hopes to recreate the gritty brutal world in which Rambo inhabits, giving gamers the chance to truly immerse themselves in the experience.

Are you hyped by the idea of a Rambo game, or will it head the way of most film tie-ins? Let us know what you think at Facebook and Twitter.

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:51 AM PDT

Skype have added 17 new Android devices to the list of phones that can make use of Skype for Android's video calling feature.

Previously limited to just a handful of Android handsets including the Google Nexus S and HTC Desire S, the new update brings the super-budget video calling service to the following handsets and tablets:

The Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Droid Charge, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Desire, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Sensation, HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Flyer, LG Revolution, Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, Sony Ericsson Xperia ray, Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro and Acer A5.

However, Android users looking to use the service will have to upgrade their phone's OS to the 2.3 Gingerbread release of Android, as using the outdated FroYo will reportedly only let you video chat using the handset's rear-facing camera, requiring all sorts of interesting contortions on your part.

Pierre Cardin launches UK's first designer tablet

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:05 AM PDT

It was only a matter of time.

Dedicated followers of fashion have been snapping up designer-branded handsets since the first LG Prada phone appeared back in 2006, so designer tablets were only ever a season or two away.

The first such tablet to go on sale in the UK comes courtesy of French fashion house Pierre Cardin. With a 7" touchscreen, the romantically-named 'PC-7006' (doesn't it just conjour images of Paris?) is the same size as the BlackBerry PlayBook, although it's designer cred is marred by sub-standard innards: no rear-camera, 3G available only via an attachable dongle, 512MB of RAM, and Android 2.2 FroYo rather than the tablet-specific 3.0 Honeycomb.

According to the Pierre Cardin website, "the Pierre Cardin Tablet PC is perfectly sized to fit in the palm of your hand yet practical enough for life on the go". Although that said, it's also hardly a size-zero model, measuring in as it does at a hefty 1.4cm thick, compared to the iPad's 8.8mm.

The Pierre Cardin tablet is available for £275 (including that natty leather case).

iPhone 5 pictures: Spy shot leaked in France?

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:31 PM PDT

The rumour mill spits out another would-be iPhone design.

A new reputed iPhone 5 picture is doing the rounds on the web, this one reportedly coming from inside a mobile carrier's office in France, where security is apparently so Orwellian the uploader has had to pixelate his own hands.

The photo, which sprung up on the MacRumours forums under the title "iPhone 5: The first picture", appears to show what we've been led to expect from all the other iPhone 5 rumours drifting around the interweb: slimmer body, curved back, bigger screen. However, the internet at large remains unconvinced:

"Of course [the picture] is fake" claims Gizmodo, after knocking up their own similar iPhone 5 image in photoshop. "Don't believe in Apple rumours, people. Especially not blurry ones posted on Twitter."

We'd have to agree: a solitary, pixelated shot at a wonky angle ain't enough to get us on board with this. We're also wondering how the photo was actually taken, what with both of our corporate spy's hands being visible in the shot. Unless more pop up, we're calling fake on this, too.
