Facebook plans to expand its new California HQ

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Not only is Facebook relocating to new California HQ, it is also planning a large-scale expansion.

In early 2009 Facebook moved from its plush HQ in Palo Alto, California to Stanford Research Park, previously home to pioneering American firms such as Hewlett Packard and Lockheed Martin. Earlier this year, the social network site announced that it was moving its base of operations again, to Menlo Park. Following news that Facebook has signed up 30 million UK users, it appears that it's optimism knows no bounds, as it announced plans today to expand the HQ at Menlo Park to accomodate a larger workforce.

The 1,500 people currently working for Facebook at Stanford Research Park are gradually being relocated to the East Campus of Menlo Park, which is being renovated. Facebook's ambition however is to employ around 9,000 people, an ambition that the East Campus at Menlo Park , with a total capacity of 6,600, is simply not enough to realise. The plan then is to extend Menlo Park across Highway 84 and create a new West Campus which will house another 2,800 employees.

Employing a workforce of 9,000 people brings about new challenges of rush hour traffic and parking around the Menlo Park site, however Facebook are committed to alleviating these problems in an eco-friendly manner. Despite the five storey parking deck that will be the centrepiece of the West Campus, Facebook will offer shuttles, free Caltrain passes and organised van pools to try and discourage single-driver commuting.

Most of all, Facebook is very committed to promoting bike commuting. Buildings will have showers and towel service, lockers for commuters, bike shelters and a bike-loan service for the more tentative bicyclist. The new campus will even have a 'bike doctor' to help with repairs and general bike-related issues.

Employees in the new West Campus will certainly be well fed. The campus will have two cafés serving three meals through-out the day, a coffee shop, open pit BBQ, a taco shack, a pizza stand and a salad bar. Facebook employees will also be looked after by the addition of a fitness center, a cinema and an on-site doctor.

Construction itself won't begin until 2013, as the West Campus needs an environmental review before anyone can start laying foundations. But the plans themselves are very exciting. The blue-hued social network is now in direct competition with other net based colossi such as Google, as evidenced by Facebook's direct criticism of Google+ last week. and these plans show they are willing to match Google's dedication to their workers and consequent dedication to growth and improvement.

Do you think that Facebook can continue to grow into new areas or do you think the social networking site has reached saturation point? Let us know what you think via the T3 Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Facebook Places is scrapped

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:40 AM PDT

Every time a company has an idea it always has a chance of failing, sadly Facebook's Places has suffered this fate, with rival FourSquare staying top dog

Facebook has decided to scrap Facebook Places the location checking-in service which allows users to set their locations on the social network.

The decision came after it was found that FourSquare was still dominating the market and uptake of the service was just not as constant as was first thought. Users will still be able to add locations to statuses however the check-in feed had been removed on the site and on the apps.

One could argue this will be one less thing to worry about for the company after security firm Sophos said that Facebook had much more room for improvement concerning its security features.

What do you think, will Facebook Places be sorely missed? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Dutch court injunction bans Samsung Galaxy S II sales

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S II, Galaxy S and Galaxy Ace hit by new injunction awarded to Apple by a Dutch court

A Dutch court has awarded Apple an injunction that will see the Samsung Galaxy S II handset banned from sale in the country, new reports have revealed.

After the recent overruling of the injunction that stopped Samsung selling its 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab to European markets, new reports have suggested a Rechtbank’s-Gravenhage court in The Hague has now granted Apple a preliminary injunction preventing the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S II handset.

The preliminary injunction, awarded to Apple on the basis that the Samsung devices infringe on patents held by the Cupertino company will see sales of the Samsung Galaxy S II, its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy S and the Samsung Galaxy Ace all halted in the Netherlands in seven weeks time.

The latest in a longstanding legal battle the Galaxy S II injunction follows a ruling by a German court which saw the Galaxy Tab 10.1 briefly barred from sale across European markets before the decision was overturned.

The injunction, which applies to three separate subsidiaries of Samsung based in the Netherlands, will not see the range of handsets barred across the EU but might force the Korean tech giant to re-route its shipments to the continent in order to bypass its European logistics hub based in Holland.

Update

Speaking with T3 an official spokesperson for samsung has said: "Today's ruling is an affirmation that the GALAXY range of products is innovative and distinctive. With regard to the single infringement cited in the ruling, we will take all possible measures including legal action to ensure that there is no disruption in the availability of our GALAXY smartphones to Dutch consumers. This ruling is not expected to affect sales in other European markets.

We will continue our plans to introduce new products and technologies that meet and exceed consumer expectations. And we will defend our intellectual property rights through the ongoing legal proceedings around the world.”

Is the Samsung Galaxy S II the best handset currently available to by or does the HTC Sensation or Apple iPhone 4 top its 1.2GHz dual-core credentials? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

China now largest PC market in the world

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 06:49 AM PDT

International Data Corporation has released statistics which show the US will be taking the no.2 spot in the PC market - but not for long

The IDC has released statistics which show that China has overtaken the US as the leader in the global PC market shipping in the last quarter $11.9 billion worth of units.

The US was left behind with 21 per cent of the global market, shipping only $11.7 billion worth of units this quarter, however the IDC does suggest this may not be a permanent fixture, yet. With the US market picking up for the holiday season it's likely that the United States will surpass that figure, leaving them back at no.1 for by the end of 2011.

This is not permanent though as China's global share is slowly increasing all the time, so by 2012 it's expected to be back at no.1 in more of a cemented position. Many believe this is an indication of things to come, and with a population of over 1.3 billion China is a resource that hasn't as yet been fully explored in terms of technological imports. With the iPhone not even licensed in China, it's a stark reminder of just what effect a more open policy on technology products could have on the global markets.

What do you think, will the iPhone or Android take hold in China? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

HTC Puccini tablet: Pictures and specs leak before launch

HTC Puccini: Pictures and specs of the next 10.1-inch Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet

Ahead of the device’s expected IFA unveiling the repeatedly leaked 10.1-inch HTC Puccini has appeared online once again with a series of clear spyshots landing alongside some rather impressive specs.

Shown as sporting a brushed aluminium casing with a substantial black bezel the HTC Puccini is claimed by tech site Engadget as readying for launch with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM.

Continuing HTC’s longstanding partnership with Google the Puccini is unsurprisingly tipped as running the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system from launch with an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera and 16GB of internal storage included.

Following on from the 7-inch HTC Flyer tablet which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year the Puccini is to land as a direct rival to Apple’s market dominating iPad 2 device.

Speaking with T3 ahead of the expected HTC Puccini arrival a HTC spokesperson remained typically cagey stating: “we do not comment on rumour and speculation.”

Can HTC’s claimed 10-inch tablet truly challenge the Apple iPad 2 atop the tablet charts? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook security changes not enough say Sophos

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 04:27 AM PDT

Sophos believes that Facebook should be taking the lead, not being told to take the lead by regulators when it comes to its privacy options

Online security firm Sophos has been looking at the new security changes made by Facebook which will be rolling in today and is asking whether firstly they've done enough, and secondly, what more could they be doing.

The changes themselves range from making existing options easier to access to their most notable adjustment in the form of photo-tagging. Before, anyone was able to tag a person, with the photo appearing on the news feed and then having to be removed afterwards by un-tagging the image. Now however Facebook will let you approve all tags before they appear on the newsfeed.

While Sophos welcomes these changes, senior technology consultant Graham Cluley believes that they still have more to do, 'While there’s a lot of good stuff here, with Facebook making efforts to simplify the way its privacy settings work, Facebook doesn’t seem to have addressed the more fundamental privacy issues on the site'

He goes on to say 'Facebook should become truly ‘opt-in’, not just on the basis that a new user opts in by joining Facebook in the first place, but on the basis that features are turned off until users decide to activate them.'

These new features will be available from today and you can see a full list of them here. What do you think, is Facebook doing enough or could they improve? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

iPhone 4S rumours suggest budget iPhone within weeks

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 04:09 AM PDT

Apple iPhone 5 release to see iPhone 4S land as Apple's budget smartphone offering?

Ahead of the iPhone 5 release date new reports have suggested the next-generation smartphone is to be joined by a cheaper iPhone 4 arrival as Apple looks to make headway into the mid-range smartphone market.

Continuing rumours of a mooted iPhone 4S device, Apple is said to be preparing the second device in an attempt to quash Google’s dominance of the mid-range smartphone market through its Android operating system.

"A lower-priced version of iPhone 4 seems to be a necessary evil at this point in the iPhone adoption cycle, especially in emerging markets where the average income of individuals is much lower," said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund, which owns Apple shares.

Whilst latest iPhone 5 rumours have put the device as sporting an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities and a 1GHz dual-core processor, iPhone 4S speculation has seen the budget iPhone tipped as boasting the same form factor as the current iPhone 4 but with just 8GB of internal storage and a lower quality display.

With the iPHone 5 launch widely expected for sometime in September The Guardian has today reported that Apple will “release a cheaper iPhone 4 within weeks, cutting profit margins to win lower-end customers from rivals such as Nokia in China and other emerging markets.”

Would a mid-range iPhone tempt you into plumping for an Apple handset or is the company’s cream of the crop device the only way to go? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nikon announces new compact cameras

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:52 AM PDT

Nikon has spoilt us with what can only be described as an entirely new range in itself, from their high-end D-SLR's to their compacts, they've got a new product.

Nikon has unveiled a slew of new cameras, covering all ranges and throwing in some big new features such as 3D-imaging and built-in pico projectors.

Start gallery: Nikon new cameras

First up is the king of the range, the Nikon P7100. An update on the old model, the P7100 is their ultimate compact D-SLR offering a 10.1MP sensor with full manual controls, 7.1x zoom and a hinged-touchscreen which allows you to take perfect images from any angle. At £499 it's not cheap, but for that you get all the features of a SLR in the body of a compact, it's out 22 September.

Next up are the S1200pj and S100, both offering up a compact with a difference. The S1200pj has a built-in pico projector while the S100 is able to take 3D images from different angles, putting them together so they can be put together and viewed on a 3DTV. Both offer 720p recording and the S1200pj comes with a 14MP lens while the S100 is endowed with a larger 16MP, both these will be available for £399 and £249 respectively.

For those who want a compact with the zoom of a bigger camera, but don't want the bulk of an SLR Nikon has unveiled the S6100 and S8200, both with insane zoom capabilities. The S6200 is the smaller sibling and has only, we say only, a 10x zoom with 16MP and 720p recording. The S8200 on the other hand has a mammoth 14x zoom and offers up full 1080p recording, again these are priced £179 and £279 respectively.

Finally we have the super compacts from Nikon with the S4150 showing us the meaning of 'pocket friendly'. At just 128g, the S4150 is incredibly lightweight but still manages to pack in a14MP sensor and offer up 720p stereo video recording. If perhaps you'd like just a few more megapixels then the S6150 will offer up a 16MP sensor and 7x zoom, all for £159.99.

So there we have it, Nikon's latest line-up, what's impressed you the most? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

BlackBerry users expect more says RIM's UK MD

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:30 AM PDT

RIM's UK MD exclusively tells T3 BlackBerry users expect more from their smartphones as the company unveils the BlackBerry Curve 9360

Following the official unveiling of the BlackBerry Curve 9360 yesterday Research In Motion’s UK Managing Director has revealed BlackBerry users want more from their devices.

Speaking exclusively with T3 RIM’s UK MD, Stephen Bates revealed the Canadian phone manufacturer had been forced to up its game in order to compete with the rise in rival devices and the increasing expectations of its user base.

“What we’ve learnt from our install base of customers is that they want more,” said Bates. “They want to be more proud of it [their BlackBerry handsets], they want it sleeker, they want it cooler; they want a better designed product.”

Bates, who suggests “people are learning to use more on their smartphones,” has said BlackBerry is looking to learn from these user demands to improve the company’s handsets.

“The Curve has been our number one successful product. It’s proving to be the workhorse across all demographics.” He added: “We’ve learnt a lot from our early customer feedback around the Curve, around providing sharper, slicker graphics and a faster phone.”

The BlackBerry Curve 9360 is to hit the UK running the company’s new BlackBerry OS 7 operating system alongside a 480 x 360p display, 5-megapixel rear mounted camera and an 800MHz processor. The company’s traditional full QWERTY keyboard and a minimalist 11mm form factor complete the handset offering.

Has RIM done enough in its latest range of BlackBerry handsets to tempt you splashing out on one of the OS 7 handsets? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 coming 2012

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Sequel coming at last, but will it be better than average Episode 1.

Sega has said it’s working towards the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 4, Episode 2, in 2012. The news comes a year after Episode 1 was released to mixed reviews, with the 2D platform game criticised for rehashing old levels.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sega’s Takashi Iikuka said, “Moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I'd hope to provide Episode 2 then." Responding to questions about whether Sony had been slow to release Episode 2, he said, “It was always the plan. We knew about the anniversary year [of Sonic in 2011], and [Sonic] Generations was planned way in advance. It was always our plan to release Episode 2 after Generations."

Either way, Sony will need to address gamers complaints about Episode 1, ideally bringing back the old-school style Sonic and making levels look and feel different to those found on the Mega Drive.

In a legal battle that's become about as exciting as watching a broken kettle boil it's nice to see one side taking the initiative. Samsung is hoping this move will win them some serious legal brownie points

Samsung is planning on using the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey as a way of proving that Apple's patent for a 'tablet computer' is completely void citing that Kubrick first thought of the idea around forty years ago.

Known as the 'prior-art' defence the claim can be made that if there is firm evidence that an idea or product has existed before the patent was made it can potentially invalidate that patent. It's a bold move from the Korean company which is still reeling from the blow Apple dealt when it banned the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe over patent infringements.

While the ban was only temporary this is just one aspect of a legal battle that has been knee-deep in accussations. Most recently a dutch tech website claimed that Apple had been tampering with images of Samsung's products to make them look more alike in the legal documents they were submitting.

What do you think, has Samsung got a winning formula here or is it clutching at straws? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Sony NEX-VG20E camcorder unveiled

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 02:19 AM PDT

RAW skills and beefed up lens support.

Sony’s had a busy morning, and it’s rounded off its string of imaging announcements with a new camcorder, the NEX-VG20E. Using the same E-mount lens system as the NEX-7 and NEX-5N, it comes full of features that budding directors will love.

Naturally, Full HD recording, in AVCHD, leads the line. There are 50p and 25p progressive modes for more movie-like shots, as well as RAW format support for pros looking to get the very best out of the camera.

Audio’s been given a boost too, with a new Quad Capsule Spatial Array microphone for picking up sound in a more effective way. The button layout has also been tweaked in order to be more intuitive.

The NEX-VG20E will be hitting stores in November. Looking to upgrade your camcorder? Tell us what you think of Sony’s new effort on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony NEX-5N super-slim compact unleashed

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 01:00 AM PDT

NEX-5N is sequel to best-selling NEX-5.

Sony’s new top-end NEX-7 a touch too much for your tastes? Then the Sony NEX05 might just be the answer. The successor to the ace, Sony NEX-5, this interchangeable lens compact measures just 23.3mm thin and is fully loaded with smarts to keep budding photo enthusiasts happy.

16.1 megapixels means you can take high resolution shots with ease, while a new BIONZ processor allows the ISO to be ramped up to a frankly ludicrous 25,600. That means shots in dark places should be a doddle, although we imagine there’ll be fair bit of noise thrown into the bargain too.

10 frames per second continuous shooting will make firing off sports shots and the like a breeze, while Full HD video also comes as standard. Picture Effect modes mean you can tweak your handiwork on the NEX-5N without having to load it up to Photoshop. There are stacks of art modes too for giving your images a unique feel before you start shooting.

The NEX-5N works with Sony’s E-mount lenses and is set for release in September, Tempted? Let us know now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony NEX-7 interchangeable lens compact outed

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:46 PM PDT

Sony's back with a new interchangeable lens compact and it's better than ever.

Sony’s NEX interchangeable lens compacts took the world by storm last year. And now the Big S is back with a new top-end effort in its NEX range: the NEX-7.

As well as being loaded up with 24.3 megapixels, the NEX-7 is chock full of top-end smarts, including Full HD movie mode, which can now be used with manual focus. Videos can be shot in full manual mode, with sound quality also improved compared to 2010’s NEX-5.

There’s a 3-inch OLED panel slapped on the back, with 100 per cent frame coverage to ensure you see exactly what you’re snapping every time. There’s 10 frames per second continuous shooting to match Sony’s new A65 DSLR, alongside a rather nippy 0.02 second release time lag, for getting off different shots as quickly as possible.

The NEX-7 hasn’t been slapped with a price tag yet, but it’ll be out in November, so there’s time yet for you to get saving. Tell us what you think of the NEX-7 now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony Alpha A77 and A65 official

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:31 PM PDT

Sony amps up SLR range with two new feature-packed snappers.

Sony has just given the official nod to two new Alpha DSLRs. The A77 and A65 each pack in a massive 24.3 megapixels for high resolution pics, as well as cramming in HD video and super-fast continuous shooting.

The latter is the biggest draw on the A77, which at 12 frames per second (fps) is the world’s fastest full-resolution continuous burst shooting with phase detection. Well, that’s according to Sony, a company not unknown for breaking records that most people are simply unaware of. Either way, it means you’ll be able to reel off stacks of snaps in quick smart fashion. The less speedy A65 can handle 10 fps.

On top of that, you’ll find autofocus with a 19 point detection system and Full HD video, as well as translucent mirror tech for getting super sharp shots. The A77 also comes with a 3 way tilting LCD panel slapped on the back.

UK prices are still TBA, but both cameras will be on the shelves of a gadget emporium near you from October. Fancy one? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Samsung cites 2001: A Space Odyssey in Apple patent dispute
In one of the more bizarre tech stories of the year, Samsung has claimed that it was Stanley Kubrick who invented tablets, which first featured in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey back in 1968. The point of all this? Well Apple claims that Samsung copied the iPad when producing the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If Sammy can prove to a court that 2001 Kubrick's film counts as 'prior art' then Apple's patents will be invalid
