iPhone/Android app news: Facebook Messenger outed

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 09:49 AM PDT

Facebook launches its own version of BBM, Gtalk and iMessage.

Facebook has launched a new standalone application for iPhone and Android which it says will ensure friends will receive your messages faster than ever before.

The Facebook Messenger app will allow you to fire off quick messages to both Facebook friends and regular phone contacts, sending notifications through both the app and text message.

Facebook points out that when you need to reach a group of friends at short notice it's often difficult to pick which method of correspondence. Will they read their email, check texts or Facebook first? (How about giving them a call?)

The social networking giant says this will sort the problem by allowing to easily start a group chat and, for example, quickly arrange a place to meet after work. Handily, you can also attach your location and a photo of where you're at.

The app is available to download now from the respective app stores and will no doubt give Apple's forthcoming free BBM-alike iMessage service for iOS a run for its money.

Avatar tops list of the best Blu-ray action moments

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:53 AM PDT

Sci-Fi behemoth Avatar announced as having the best Blu-ray action moments to date

James Cameron’s futuristic blockbuster Avatar has topped a list of the best Blu-ray action moments with the 3D powerhouse beating out competition from the likes of The Dark Knight.

Having broke all box-office records following its release Avatar, which has helped push 3D films in to the mainstream through the use of pioneering new extra-dimesional technologies, looks set to help further develop the Blu-ray sector having topped a chart of the format’s best moments.

The chart, compiled by the Blu-ray Disc Association saw Avatar claim top spot as Blu-ray’s greatest action moment to date ahead of The Dark Knight and King Kong. Scenes from the mind-bending thriller Inception and The Green Hornet completed the top five.

“The climactic scene when the native Na’vi take to the air to fight the humans is an epic battle on such an immense scale that it really takes more than one viewing to absorb it all,” a spokesperson for the Blu-ray Disc Association announced.

“The astonishing details, audio and the pace of the scene truly take your breath away in this battle of nature versus technology – and make an incredible showcase for any Blu-ray set-up.”

What is your top Blu-ray action moment? Can you think of something that tops Avatar? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 release beaten by HiPhone 5 Chinese replica

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:07 AM PDT

Chinese iPhone 5 replica lands as the HiPhone 5 ahead of the official iPhone 5 release date

With the iPhone 5 release date still a well guarded mystery Apple has been beaten to the punch with an iPhone 5 replica launching in China under the moniker of the HiPhone 5.

Available from the nation’s largest online retailer, Taobao, the HiPhone 5 costs the equivalent of just £19, substantially less than the official Apple iPhone 4 which is priced at £510 from the company’s UK website.

Not the first Chinese replica of an Apple device the HiPhone 5 sports an aesthetic similar to that of the current iPhone and is available in the standard black and white colour schemes as well as more adventurous red and pink tones.

Recent iPhone 5 rumours have suggested the mooted handset will land in the coming months with a September iPhone 5 release date widely expected. Other reports have claimed the device will sport a 1GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities.

Nokia N9 will not get UK release

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 07:22 AM PDT

The Nokia N9 will never officially see our shores leaving us with the prospect of Windows Phone 7, at Christmas

Nokia has confirmed that it's unibody MeeGo powered Nokia N9 will not only be avoiding the US entirely but also the United Kingdom as well.

The company has confirmed that as yet it has no plans to bring the phone to either country, instead focusing on slowly removing Symbian from our memories and replacing it with the idea of Nokia and Windows Phone 7. From a business point of view, this move does make some sense: with the company raving about Windows Phone 7 so much, to release a new OS into the wild might prove confusing.

This doesn't however mean it's a good thing. From what we've seen of the handset, the OS looked to be a real winner while the specs were some of the best and well put together that Nokia have managed in a while (If you don't believe us, check out the video footage grabbed below on the handset).

What do you think, is Nokia making a mistake not bringing the N9 to our shores? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple becomes the world's most valuable company

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Apple has overtaken Exxon Mobil to become the world's most valuable company

Apple has officially become the world’s most valuable company, briefly surpassing Exxon Mobil after the oil giant was hit by the continued slumps in the stock market.

Increasing its value by a whopping 41 per cent in the past year Apple has rallied against the slow markets with the continued success of the iPad 2, iPhone 4 and its range of Mac devices helping to steer it to the top of the global valuations.

Seeing its value rise to a staggering $341.5 billion (£210.24 billion) yesterday Apple overtook Exxon as the world’s most valuable company as the oil firm slipped to a mere $341.4 billion before rallying ahead of the market close to retake top spot.

Last week it emerged that Apple has a larger cash reserve than the entire US Government with a store of $76.4 billion compared to the government’s $73.7 billion.

Can Apple reclaim the title of the world’s most valuable company or will Exxon rules as the markets become more stable? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook usage drops to lowest point since 2009

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 02:39 AM PDT

Facebook usage down as rivals Twitter and YouTube increase share in social market

Facebook’s popularity appears to have peaked as new reports suggest the social network saw usage fall almost 4 per cent during July to its lowest point in two years.

The latest figures, compiled by research firm Experian Hitwise, show that the 4 per cent fall in usage has effected the company’s share of the social networking sector in the UK.

Having held a 53.7 per cent share of the UK social media market in June of this year Facebook is reported to now control just over half of the sector with a 50.1 per cent share.

"Facebook's dominance of the UK social market hasn't been this low since October 2009, when the network accounted for 50.5pc of all visits to the category," the Experian Hitwise report said.

Picking up the slack left by Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have both increased their shares of the social networking market with YouTube remaining the fasting growing social outlet for the fifth month in a row thanks to a 1.8 per cent growth up to 22.5 per cent.

Windows Phone Tango may power budget phones

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 12:35 AM PDT

New Windows Phone 7 update "all about Nokia".

The arrival of the updated Windows Phone Mango is fast approaching, but speculation already abounds over its rumoured follow-up, Windows Phone Tango. While popular wisdom had been that Tango would be an update - Tango to Mango what Gingerbread was to FroYo - a post from ZDNET now suggests that Tango may be a cut-down version of the Windows OS for use on lower-end smartphones.

"One of my contacts... said Tango was “all about Nokia” and focused on hitting the lower-price point for Windows Phones that Microsoft and Nokia execs have been promising." Wrote Mary-Jo Foley on her All About Microsoft ZDNET blog. "My contact also said the Tango release may be focused largely or even exclusively on the Asian market."

Windows Phone Tango had been tipped to appear after the launch of Mango, but before the arrival of the even-more-speculative Apollo, thought be the codename for Windows Phone 8.

Windows Phone Tango will reporetedly arrive on one or two new handsets from Nokia ahead of the release of Windows Phone 8, following the Finnish telecomms company's recent "strategic partnership" with Microsoft.

BlackBerry may hand over London rioter information

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 12:13 AM PDT

Looters and rioters communicating with BBM may be traced

BlackBerry makers Research In Motion have pledged to help UK police by sharing information relating to the recent spate of riots across the country.

Allegations were made by police earlier this week that rioters were communicating using BlackBerry's encrypted BBM messenger service. David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, said that BBM's encrypted network was "one of the reasons why unsophisticated criminals are outfoxing an otherwise sophisticated police force."

Information that RIM could potentially make available to the police includes a user's name, location, number of messages sent and who those messages were sent to at what time. While under normal circumstances RIM would not be able to release private information about its users without a warrant, an exception is made in the UK Data Protection Act where that information could help the police prevent a crime.

RIM have yet to release a statement, but have reportedly said that it will be cooperating fully with the Home Office during the investigations into the recent unrest.

Samsung: Apple gave us "no notice" of injunction

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 11:38 PM PDT

Samsung reports it had no opportunity to defend itself from injunction.

After hearing yesterday that Apple had brought an injunction against Samsung which resulted in their Galaxy Tab 10.1 being taken off the shelves, Samsung have released a statement claiming Apple's move came as a complete shock.

"Samsung is disappointed with the court's decision and we intend to act immediately to defend our intellectual property rights through the ongoing legal proceedings in Germany and will continue to actively defend these rights throughout the world." Said a spokesperson speaking to CNET.

"The request for injunction was filed with no notice to Samsung, and the order was issued without any hearing or presentation of evidence from Samsung."

The injunction was granted by a judge in Germany and is binding across the EU, with the exception of the Netherlands, in which Apple is already pursuing further legal action against Samsung.

Apple have since claimed in support  of the injunction that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 "blatantly" copies the iPad and iPhone design: "It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging." Said an Apple spokesperson. "This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."

Samsung will be able to appeal the judge's decision in Germany in a month's time.
