Apple iPad 2 sales expected to hit 22 million units in Q4 Posted: 23 Aug 2011 08:32 AM PDT
iPad 2 expected to top Christmas wish lists with 22 million Apple tablets predicted to be sold in Q4 Apple is to sell 22 million iPad tablets during the year’s fourth quarter as the market dominating device strikes a chord with festive shoppers, industry analyst Jason Schwarz has predicted.
In a blog post on Seeking Alpha industry analyst Schwarz suggested that following the iPad 2 release earlier this year Apple is to see sales of the iOS powered tablet soar ahead of the Christmas period as consumers look to add the must-have device to their gadget arsenal.
“We also take into consideration the 183% year over year growth that the iPad experienced in its most recent quarter to come up with a forecast of 21.9 million iPads to be sold in this year’s holiday quarter.”
The prediction comes just days after HP ceased production of its iPad challenger the HP TouchPad as the tech giant stops support of the webOS platform. Since the decision TouchPads have dropped in price to below £90 in the UK resulting in the fledgling tablet selling out across most retailers.
Will you be splashing out on an iPad 2 ahead of the Christmas period or do you have your eye on other pieces of gadget gold? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony PlayStation Home to get redesign Posted: 23 Aug 2011 04:45 AM PDT
Remember PlayStation Home? Sony's own virtual world for social interaction etc, well they've decided to give it a new lick of paint Sony is planning to overhaul PlayStation Home, the virtual world in which PS3 users can interact with other players, play games and use social media.
The overhaul is in place to make games the new focus after Sony noticed it was losing users to social networking sites, alone with a change in ethos it'll also get a new location. Called 'The Hub' the new HQ that will greet users will not be unlike a train terminal, with games, user-generated content and challenges all built into the design of the building.
It's an interesting design, the platforms representing gateways to games and challenges, with a transit station being a perfect metaphor as a 'hub' for branching out. Of course whether it'll catch on will remain to be seen with Sony planning to launch the updated PlayStation Home later this year.
What do you think, will that be enough to bring you back to the service? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Battlefield 3 screenshots: New iOS Battlefield 3 screens Posted: 23 Aug 2011 04:10 AM PDT
New Battlefield 3 screenshots have revealed details of the iPad and iPhone destined iOS title Ahead of the Battlefield release date on October 28th developer EA has released a series of Battlefield 3 screenshots for the game’s iPhone and iPad-bound iOS release.
Due to the limitations of the portable devices the iOS rendition of Battlefield 3, which is to be dubbed Battlefield 3: Aftershock, will do away with the console title’s full campaign mode instead offering on-the-move gamers the chance to play a series of Horde-style shooting challenges.
With the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 renditions of the eagerly awaited Battlefield 3 release to hit shelves at the end of October the EA FPS will land less than two weeks ahead of bitter rival Activision launches its first person powerhouse. A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date is set for November 8th.

iPhone Nano or 3GS replacement coming? Posted: 23 Aug 2011 03:37 AM PDT
While not strictly an iPhone 5 rumour, this news could certainly have huge relevance to the launch of the iPhone 5, with an 8GB iPhone 4 replacing the iPhone 3GS Sources have suggested to TechRadar that a 8GB flash drive is being built for the iPhone 4, implying a scaled down version of the Apple product, with a suitable price tag to match.
While not strictly what could be called an 'iPhone Nano' it's simply a more wallet-friendly iPhone with memory size and price tag to boot. Some have have suggested this would be released alongside the other iPhone 4 handsets, this would seem like an odd move however with the iPhone 5 just around the corner.
Another theory is that this 8GB iPhone 4 will in fact fulfill the current role of the iPhone 3GS, offering an iOS phone but without the hugely premium price, making way for the iPhone 5 to take the larger memory sizes and higher specs.
What do you think, is this the new replacement for the 3GS or will they be releasing it before iPhone 5? Join the debate on Twitter and Facebook.

WebOS devs jump ship to Windows Phone Posted: 23 Aug 2011 03:02 AM PDT
Developers could give Windows Phone push it needs to reach the big time. WebOS’s demise may mean dirt cheap tablets for gadget fans. But it also leaves developers looking for new platforms to work on. Microsoft’s Brandon Watson clearly new this when he fired off a tweet seeing if any webOS devs fancied switching to Windows Phone, but he couldn’t have expected the impressive response.
Taking once again to Twitter, Watson said, “I have >500 emails in just the last 22 hours. Had to rethink the algorithm for responding to all."
He went on to send an email to developers keen on making the switch. “Consider this a first step in building a relationship with the Windows Phone team. We are psyched to have you aboard and to see what your imagination can do on the Windows Phone canvas."
It could mean that Windows Phone gets the extra developer support it desperately needs in order to get a boost in its battle to overhaul Android and iOS. Will it make any difference? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

It appears as though Nintendo is all too aware of how health concerns have hampered the launch of their Nintendo 3DS, so rumours have appeared that suggest they're working on a solution Sources supposedly working inside Nintendo have revealed to CVG that NIntendo is in fact working on a new piece of hardware that would replace the NIntendo 3DS, correcting what many feel to be the shortcomings of the rushed console.
The additions would include an extra stick, a mistake that many felt was a huge oversight on the part of Nintendo, there'd also be a toned down 3D layering in order to prevent further health concerns from the medical profession. This decision has been made after the 3DS was slated at launch for causing headaches and eye-strain thanks to the passive 3D technology the handheld was using.
Nintendo did retort of course saying that the 3DS came with an adjustable slider allowing gamers to choose just how 3D their gaming experience was but this appeared to do little to prevent the critics. It's believed the new handheld will feature a new name while the existing 3DS will have an accessory made allowing for a 2nd stick.
What do you think, is it too little too late, or could these corrections make the 3DS a winner? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

iPhone 5: dual mode Apple mobile in testing Posted: 22 Aug 2011 11:48 PM PDT
News will be welcomed by US punters. Apple is set to make the iPhone 5 its first dual-mode handset, offering access to CDMA and GSM networks from one single device. The news has been unearthed by TechCrunch, which has laid it hands on evidence from app usage logs.
The information, passed on by an anonymous developer, shows that a small number of apps have been put through their passes by an iPhone 5 with CDMA and GSM smarts baked in.
This means Apple won’t need to release a separate CDMA device for US network Verizon, as it did earlier this year with the iPhone 4. Instead, international users will be able to switch between one mode and the other.
It’s yet more proof that the iPhone 5 is on its way. The exact release date is unknown, but expect to hear something official by the end of September. You can comment on this story at our Facebook and Twitter pages.
