CNET reckons it was sold on the internet for as little as $200. Wow.

Sony products: IFA 2011 round-up

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 09:26 AM PDT

Sony's just left the stage at IFA 2011 and left us with a small but mighty collection of products to get stuck into from the Xperia Arc S to the Reader Wifi

IFA 2011 has seen Sony announce the arrival of some major products, not least the Sony Tablet S and the Tablet P, but alongside that were some other product announcements.

Sony IFA 2011 images: Start gallery

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S
First up we have the big announcement that the already nippy Xperia Arc has been given a bit of an upgrade in the form of the Xperia Arc S. Still featuring the same iconic curved body, the Xperia Arc S has a beefier 1.4Ghz processor inside, making it 25 per cent faster than the original Arc.

The new processor means the camera will start up 25 per cent quicker than before, making it easier than ever to simply press the dedicated shutter button, snap an image then throw it onto a social network of your choice. Thanks to the increased grunt the Arc S will also be able to carry out conversion, meaning you can share your videos and pictures in the format that you prefer. Sony Ericsson have also made web browsing better, increasing page rendering speeds by 25 per cent as well.

Finally the Arc S will also feature Sony's 2D and 3D Sweep Panorama function which have been seen cropping up on some of Sony's latest cameras. This function will also be heading to other Xperia phones later in the year.

Reader WiFi
Next up is the Reader Wifi, the lightest 6" eReader available, with an EInk touchscreen display, the Reader Wifi is also one of the first eReaders using an EInk screen to also feature multi-touch, allowing you to pinch-to-zoom and swipe from page to page.

Alongside the release of the Reader Wifi will be the Reader Store, Sony's own online book store which will launch featuring over 100,000 titles to download. Combine that with the month-long battery life which Sony claims will be on offer with the Reader Wifi and you've got a pretty neat package.

Cameras
First up is the Sony Alpha 77 which will essentially be Sony's new flagship Digital SLR. Featuring the new translucent mirror technology the a77 offers the fastest 12fps continuous shooting mode available on any camera in the world. Add to this the astonishing 24MP sensor and class-leading levels of customisation and you've got one of the most comprehensive SLRs on the market.

Last but not least is the Sony NEX-7 which will surely blow away the competition with the sheer number of cusomisations that can be carried out. Offering a more styled form factor the NEX-7 focuses on lenses and travel-friendly portability while still being able to include a 24MP sensor and an unrivalled range of lenses to take with you. Both the NEX-7 and the a77 will be available from October 2011.

Sony tablets launched at IFA 2011: Hands-on pics

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 08:09 AM PDT

Sony tablets launch at IFA, both landing before end of year.

Sony's IFA opening press conference is over, and crikey what a haul. We've seen a new Xperia Arc handset, a new Walkman, a new Sony eReader and two (count 'em, two!) new cameras - more on those here. But the stars of the Sony conference were the two Sony tablets - the tentatively-named Tablet P and the Tablet S.

Click here to launch our gallery of Sony tablet hands-on pictures

And if ever we'd complained of a certain samey-ness to be found in today's tablet market (it's thin and has a black bezel, you say?), we could never level such a charge at Sony's offerings. First up is the Tablet P, which comes with two touchscreens and is shaped like an elongated clam; and then there's the Tablet S, which rocks a funky, folded-over shell that Sony say make it more like a magazine and more stable in the hand.

The magazine-like build of the Tablet S was also explained as giving a better viewing angle when the tablet is placed on a surface. It's perhaps not as massive a leap forward as Sony would have us believe (we were getting on just fine putting our tablets in adjustable cases), but it certainly ain't bland.

The clamshell tablet is the more interesting, to our minds. The Tablet P's dual touchscreen displays can be used in the classic screen-and-keyboard setup you'd find on a laptop, or as one big screen (albeit with a hinge in the middle). Even cooler, the Tablet P can be picked up sideways and read like a book, with pages of an ebook displayed on each screen - a feature that will come in handy, what with Sony also announcing that they'll be launching their own Amazon-esque ebook store with some 100,000 digital titles available to download.

Other features of the tablets include an updated Qriocity music and video service (Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited, respectively), and the announcement that both will be PlayStation certified. What does this mean? It means that the Tablets P and S will be the first in the world that let you play classic PSOne titles on a tablet. The tablets will also be inter-connected with other Sony devices, meaning you can stream video files to networked Sony TVs, or play music from the tablets on Sony music systems.

Both tablets will be out before the end of the year, with the Tablet P (that's the clamshell one) landing in November this year in Europe priced €599, and the cheaper Tablet S arriving in Europe at the end of September, priced at €479.

iPhone app news: Financial Times kicked-off App Store

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:49 AM PDT

Will we see more publications walk away from/kicked-out of the App Store.

The Financial Times app has been booted out of the App Store and is the first high profile casualty of Apple's new compliance rules.

The FT app has been reluctant to accept Apple's insistence on a 30 per cent cut of all subscriptions made through the app, and now, two months after the new rules came into effect, Apple has dropped the axe on the FT's app-based offering.

The Financial Times had attempted to skirt Apple's strict rules by using the app to push readers to a web-based offering in an attempt to pocket all of the cash itself.

It had also promised its users faster updates via the browser-based publication.

"We're encouraging our readers to switch immediately to the new FT web app, as many new features and sections will be added over the coming weeks. Make sure you don't miss out on these updates," the publication said at the time, vowing to no-longer update its iOS apps.

The FT will now miss out on the visibility and easy payments through iTunes offered through the App Store, but will now get to keep all of the proceeds from all of the sales.

It'll be interesting to see how the company fares. If the web-based venture proves successful, then we could see the backlash against Apple's massive cut take a bigger hold with other publications.

Samsung Series 7 video outs new tablet

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:22 AM PDT

Samsung could be set to unveil a new tablet at IFA 2011 after a video footage shows off what is described as a Series 7 tablet/slate

A video has surfaced showing what looks to be Samsung's latest tablet device which interestingly is running on Windows 7.

According to the footage the tablet has a 11.6-inch screen and will share many of the specs we've seen on the Samsung Series 9 laptops.

Sporting a form-factor similar to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, this slightly larger 'slate' will supposedly come with a Intel Core i5 processor and an impressive 4GB RAM. It'll also feature SSD storage which will mean the Series 7 Slate will be quick to start up and quick to run.

The display is apparently a 1366x768 and according to the video the battery will apparently give you 7.5 hours of life before it needs charging up. The video also featured what appears to be a dock and keyboard which the reviewer mentions will be available to buy separately.

The Samsung IFA 2011 press conference which is scheduled for tomorrow, could be the place where we see an official unveiling and learn more about the specs of this Windows 7-packing tablet.

Check the video below to see the Samsung Windows 7 tablet in action and let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Panasonic products: All the details from IFA 2011

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Panasonic's new products cover a wide range of topics, from TVs to cameras to homes and everything in-between...

Right then: let’s not muck about. Panasonic’s just left the stage at IFA 2011, having showed the world what it’s got coming out. There’s a few bits to talk about across Panasonic’s main two facets: TVs and Cameras. Let’s go with TVs first…

Viera TV
The Viera range is set to join the world of IPTV connected sets. By communicating with a cloud server, Viera Smart TVs will be able to access Viera Smart Conncet - a virtual world of apps, shopping, social networking and gaming.

Although it didn’t work in the demo, Panasonic claims that you’ll be able to play online Gameloft games with other Viera Smart owners across the web. You can also buy software and hardware (such as webcams, keyboards and 3D glasses) by setting up a credit account.

Games, music and more are saved to an SD card, and it can all be controlled via Apple’s iPad - even Twitter, which lets you comment and view your feed while still watching whatever’s on, picture in picture stylee.

Press pictures:
- See the first shots of Panasonic's new products

Lumix cameras

Two new Lumix cams are coming your way, both featuring the G System that’s done so well for Panasonic over the past couple of years. The first is the Lumix DMC-FX90, which boasts WiFi for easy uploading, as well as a 24mm wide angle lens, 12.1-Meg sensor and 5x optical zoom.

The second is the DMC-FZ150, a cam with a massive 24x optical zoom and AVCHD progressive video recording. Panasonic mentioned that it’s also working on a twin lens 3D compact camera, although it kept the details on that one firmly under wraps.

Other cameras and lenses
Prosumers rejoice: the HDC Z10000 ticks all the boxes, filming in full HD 3D and bringing all of Pan’s top recording tech to the table in a relatively small package. The other big news was a brand new range of lenses, called the Premium Lens X series.

The H-PS14042 and H-PS45175 are the first two out of the block. They’re easily attachable to all of Panasonic’s cameras, and boast Nano surface coating, aspherical lens, HD and more.

And any other business?
Panasonic says it want so to be the number one green ‘innovation’ tech company by 2018, talking about how it has and will help(ed) with the aftermath of the Japan Tsunami and Earthquake. This goes as far as building a sustainable ‘smart town’ of 1000 homes that’re powered by solar power. Excess power built up by this process will even be sold off to energy companies, meaning no one there will have to pay any ‘leccy bills. Ideas for Life indeed…

There's no word on pricing as yet, but we'll keep this post updated. As for launch dates, Panasonic's sticking to a rather vague 'Autumn'. For all the news from IFA 2011, keep it locked to T3.com and be sure to let us know what you think of the news on the T3 Twitter feed.

Panasonic unveils Viera Connect and Viera Market

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:14 AM PDT

Panasonic has taken IPTV to a new level at IFA 11 this afternoon by showcasing their new Viera Connect and Viera Connect Market services for their TVs

Panasonic has unveiled its new IPTV services Viera Connect and Viera Connect Market, both internet services which will run on both this years Viera HDTVs and all Panasonic Viera TVs in the future.

Viera Connect is Panasonic's new Smart TV software which brings thousands of apps to their TVs allowing users to customize the appearance of the user interface and watch TV on-demand. Most notable are the social networking features that have been brought to Viera Connect such as Skype and Twitter integration which allows viewers to watch TV live with the Twitter feed updating live at the side or at the bottom. You can then tweet via the remote control, a wireless keyboard or through using the Apple iPad.

Accompanying Viera Connect is Panasonic's Viera Connect Market, an online marketplace which is a portal to all the apps that will be available for their TV. Through the market you can download and purchase apps, buy accessories such as 3D glasses or webcam attachements and in Panasonic's biggest step, download games which can be played on the television.

Pansonic earlier this year announced it had signed a partnership with Gameloft which would mean games such as Assassin's Creed and Asphalt 5 will be playable on Viera HDTVs. This has since been confirmed, getting its debut at IFA 2011 today.

No word as yet on a release date however stay tuned to T3.com as we'll have more information coming shortly. Any product expectations for IFA 2011? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Toshiba, Hitachi and Sony will form LCD display company

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 06:58 AM PDT

Toshiba, Hitachi and Sony are planning the joint creation of a new company called Japan Dispay K.K. that will manufacture LCD screens for numerous electronic devices

The three firms will combine forces to create a new company called Japan Dispay KK that will manufacture small to medium-sized LCD screens for increasingly common consumer products, such as smartphones and tablet PCs.

All three have already signed a memorandum of understanding, which is not currently binding. However, they expect to sign a full legally binding contract later this year.

The news comes just days after Samsung announced it is to cut 10 per cent of the executives in its struggling liquid crystal display division, in a drastic bid to cut losses. At the time, a Samsung spokesperson said: “[the sackings] this is to strengthen competitiveness of the LCD business and stabilise the organisation amid the industry’s increasing uncertainties.”

Although the companies already control 21.5% of the LCD market between them, experts believe full integration of their businesses might be difficult as they all use different technology in their displays. Nonetheless, the trio expect their LCD display businesses to be fully integrated by early 2012.

It is understood the venture will be receiving financial backing from the Japanese government and will be operated by a firm called Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). INCJ are 90% government owned, and subsequently the venture will be 70% government owned, with Toshiba, Hitachi and Sony receiving the remaining 30% of shares between them.

Questions have already been raised about the exact financial goals of this project, especially when it is accepting vital government funding. Shigeo Sugawara from Sompo Japan Nippon Koa Asset Management, said: "It's not a business that will likely provide stable profits in the mid to long term."

It is thought that INCJ will eventually sink up to ¥200 billion (roughly £1.6 billion) into the venture, which could see it overtake Sharp and Samsung to become the biggest producer of LCD screens in the world.

Do you think this could result in better screens in phones and tablets, or is this move going to over-saturate the market? Let us know all your thoughts on the T3 Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sony Personal 3D Viewer to launch November in Japan

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 06:17 AM PDT

Sony's HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer (or 3D goggles) beams 3D straight into our eyeballs. But at £480, is it worth the hefty price tag?

We've been getting on with digital specs that create the illusion of massive screens in front of our eyes for years now (remember the Vuzix iWear for the iPhone 3GS?), but in these days of James Cameron's Avatar, Sony have evolved the tech to its inevitable conclusion: the world's first pair of 3D goggles.

Named the 3D Personal Viewer, Sony's new device fits over the wearer's skull like a Star Trek prop, and uses dual 0.7" HD OLED displays to create the illusion of a 750-foot cinema screen. By displaying a slightly different image to each eye (known as the 'dual-pane' method), the brain processes the input as a single, 3D image.

Also bundled in with the 3D gadgetry is 5.1 virtual surround sound, and controls for playing and pausing video mounted on the headset itself. With HDMI support, it can also be rigged up to a PC or a Blu-Ray player for proper cinema-going quality.

The Personal 3D Viewer will be out in Japan in November, priced around £480. Cinema of the future or headache in a box? Let us know your thoughts through the T3 inbox or the official T3 Twiiter feed.

HP TouchPad now available in US only

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 03:37 AM PDT

The HP TouchPad will now only be available in the US. Could this be a sign that Hewlett Packard is finally calling it a day on the webOS tablet?

HP has revealed that it will be scaling down availability for the HP TouchPad, with the tablet now only being made available to US customers. Senior officials at the consumer electronics firm said new stock will be released into the US market next month, although a solid date hasn't been given.

In a official statement, HP said: "A limited quantity of TouchPads will be available in the coming weeks in North America only. In EMEA we are discontinuing the webOS hardware operations and will not offer any additional products beyond what might be currently available in selective outlets".

The HP TouchPad has proved to be a runaway success since its launch just a few weeks ago. Ironically this success comes after they dropped the price to $99, when it was revealed that Hewlett Packard would be cancelling their tablet operations and reviewing all hardware operations. Running the latest incarnation of webOS the tablet has been seen running Google's Android operating system as well.

Were you one of the lucky few that got hold of HP's TouchPad? Let us know what you think on Facebook or Twitter.

Graphene faster than fibre optic?

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Scientists have developed a way to potentially increase internet speeds tens of times faster than even fibre optic thanks to the miracle that is graphene.

Scientists have managed to create a composite using graphene and plasmonic nanostructures which then makes it capable of capturing light and converting it into electricity tens or even hundreds of times faster than current materials.

Essentially what this means is that the material, once perfected could easily be used in optoelectronics (the internet market). Graphene is already considered a bit of a miracle substance, only one atom thick it's the thinnest material in the world and yet has properties that make it 100 times stronger than steel.

Its uses have already been explored in other areas, however it's only now that British scientists were able to combine it with other substances to make it as effecient at collecting the light as it was at converting that light into electricity. A huge discovery it poses big questions for what we could be seeing in the future in terms of technology and the way the internet works.

Is graphene the next step for the internet or is it too early to tell? Let us know what you think on Facebook and Twitter.

Toshiba AT100 tablet launches in UK September 1st

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:48 AM PDT

Toshiba AT100 tablet launching in UK on September 1st.

Toshiba have announced their latest foray into the tablet market ahead of this year's IFA conference: the 10.1-inch Toshiba AT100 tablet, available from September first in the UK.

Under the hood the tablet packs a the same Tegra 2 processor found in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, 32GB of onboard storage and a seven-hour battery life. The AT100 also comes running the latest iteration of Google's Android operating system, Honeycomb 3.1.

So far, so Android tablet. But the AT100 picks up some T3 style points with a rather natty coloured back cover (hewn from finest rubber) for extra grip and fashion cred. It's also something of a looker from the front, with a camera framed in semi-circle of chrome, breaking up the standard tablet-issue black bezel.

Toshiba has snuck the AT100 out just ahead of the rumoured Amazon Tablet that's had us all excited this past week, which anonymous sources have been claiming will undercut the iPad (and, therefore, the current stable of high-end Android tablets as well) by "hundreds of dollars". With no pricing info available, will the Toshiba AT100 find itself similarly outpriced? More when we hear it.

Microsoft outs new Kinect bundle

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Details revealed on Major Nelson blog.

Microsoft has pulled the wrappers off of a new Xbox 360 Kinect sensor bundle. The new package includes the best-selling motion control camera, along with the standard copy of Kinect Adventures, as well as a download code for Child of Eden.

Microsoft’s Major Nelson took to his official blog to outline plans for the new package. “This new bundle will be priced the same as the current sensor bundle and will start appearing in stores next week in all Xbox Live regions (except Japan since Child of Eden has not been released there.) This bundle will be available in limited quantities and while supplies last so be sure to look for the special packaging.”

Kinect has sold well since its launch at the end of last year, but there have been grumblings about the lack of varied titles available for the motion controller. Microsoft attempted to address this at E3 back in June, but we’ll only know how successful it’s really been once the Christmas 2011 sales figures are in.

White Samsung Galaxy S2 lands in the UK

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 01:42 AM PDT

Super AMOLED Android mobile now available in lighter shell.

What is it about the colour white that adds so much time onto a phone's production? After landing in Blighty in May this year, Samsung have only just announced that the white version of the Super AMOLED-toting Samsung Galaxy S2 will be available to UK customers today.

"Since its launch in May the Galaxy S II has been a huge hit with Samsung consumers." Said Simon Stanford, managing director of Samsung Mobile UK. "We always want to offer a range of products that suit different people and are delighted to now be able to give consumers the choice of the UK’s leading Android smartphone in black or white."

The Samsung Galaxy S2 wowed us at MWC in February with its blacker-than-black Super AMOLED display and dual-core processor. Those looking for a new Android handset but put off by the mobile industry's monochrome pallette now have a proper alternative.

iPhone 5: more camera parts leaked

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 11:35 PM PDT

More iPhone 5 gossip emerges ahead of official announcement.

iPhone 5 parts leaks are now a weekly occurrence as the phone’s official announcement draws ever closer. Today, Greek iPhone claims it’s laid its mitts on camera components for the next-gen Apple cell, and they certainly reveal some interesting tidbits.

The Greek site says the new camera module is thinner than the one found on the current iPhone, with a higher resolution. Previous gossip has suggested Sony is supplying an 8 megapixel sensor for the iPhone 5.

The same site claims the next-gen blower will be thinner, with volume controls on the opposite side of the device compared to the iPhone 4. This is tittle tattle we’ve heard before, but it seems more sources are confirming similar information.

We’ll be bringing you all the news on the iPhone 5’s release as it happens, so keep it locked to T3.com and our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HP TouchPad: "limited quantity" of slates in pipeline

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 11:20 PM PDT

News comes after frantic rush to buy cut price tablet.

HP has confirmed that it will be releasing a small number of discontinued TouchPad tablets later this year, with the current batch having sold out after prices were slashed. The 16GB TouchPad dropped to just £89, while the 32GB model fell to £115.

The news comes via an official email from HP. “While we do not yet have specific details, we know it will be at least a few weeks before we have a limited quantity available again,” reads the missive.

This decision follows a raft of reports about suppliers being left with TouchPad components, but being unsure what to actually do with them. The high level of demand means HP is now keen to at least get as many TouchPads out there as possible, even if its webOS plans are doomed.
