iOS 5 to provide earthquake warnings for Japanese users

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:14 AM PDT

Apple iOS 5 will provide the option to be constantly connected to Japan's national earthquake warning system

According to a screenshot posted by '9to5Mac', the Japanese version of Apple's upcoming iOS 5 will contain the option to turn on earthquake warnings.

The early warning option will be within the new OS's 'notification centre' where users can decide exactly what they want to be alerted about.

Japan has the most effective earthquake warning system in the world, where over 1,000 seismographs around the country detect the early tremors of an earthquake before calculating the epicentre and sending out warnings of the imminent threat.

Apple iOS 5 will be constantly connected to this warning system (provided you have the option switched on) so users will receive an earthquake notification as soon as the national warning system has sent out the alert.

This is typically between one second and two minutes before the earthquake hits, usually closer to the latter, providing enough time to duck under the nearest table.

There are already earthquake warning services available in Japan via apps such as 'Yurekuru Call' but Apple's attempt to deliver the same service streamlined into their OS will surely be welcomed, especially after the havoc wreaked in Japan by the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami back in March.

Apple to launch all new Mac range later this year?

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:09 AM PDT

Apple to launch all new Mac device that will be "absolutely different from current products."

Following the arrival of the refreshed MacBook Air range Apple is reported to be planning to release an all new Mac offering later this year, new reports have suggested.

Whilst little is known about the mystery device, Japanese tech blog macotakara.jp has suggested Apple is readying a new addition to the Mac family which will be “absolutely different from current products.”

Specs, features and release details are all a thing of speculation with the new devices a possible replacement for the MacBook range that was discontinued with the launch of the latest range of MacBook Air machines.

Other possibilities have suggested that the much mooted MacBook Pro refresh could account for the mystery machines with the high-end laptops expected to get an air-esque makeover dropping the pounds and inches. A potential iOS come OS hybrid device has also been rumoured.

What would you like to see from Apple’s next Mac range? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the upcoming release.

PES 2012 demo release date confirmed by Konami

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 08:21 AM PDT

Konami to launch first PES 2012 playable demo this week for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC

The first of two Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 playable demos is to be released this week as developer Konami confirms a Wednesday August 24th arrival.

Set to be made available for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360, the first PES 2012 demo will land as a preview build of the game, allowing eager gamers to sample the release’s new teammate control functionality but will not be a true representation of the final game.

With fans able to play ten minute matches the first demo will “showcase the individuality of the many teams in the game,” as fans line up Manchester United, AC Milan, Santos, Porto, Napoli and C.A. Panarol. A number of training challenges will test user’s skills on the new control system.

"We have spoken a lot about the new additions to PES 2012, and now we want users to see it for themselves,” said European PES Team Leader Jon Murphy. He added: “We truly value the support and input of our user base - and these demos are so they can see how their help has aided the most ambitious PES to date."

Of the demo releases Konami said: "The first PES 2012 demo will not be truly representative of the final game, so Konami will issue a second free demo reflecting the final version's feel and gameplay in mid-September for the same formats.

“This will also offer 10-minute matches, but with a different team roster of Tottenham Hotspur, FC Bayern Munich, FC Internazionale Milano, Rangers FC, Club America and Sport Club Internacional."

A PES 2012 UK release date has been set for October 14th, exactly two weeks after the bitter rival’s FIFA 12 UK release date on September 30th.

Which of the two leading football sims are you most looking forward to playing this year? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Leaked iPhone 5 camera dispels dual LED flash rumour

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 07:37 AM PDT

iPhone 5 release date preluded by leaked iPhone 5 camera parts

Ahead of the imminently expected iPhone 5 release date, claimed iPhone 5 parts have leaked seemingly dispelling rumours that the handset’s camera will sport a dual LED flash.

The latest leaked iPhone 5 parts, which are said to have come direct from component suppliers, appear to reveal that the mooted Apple handset will not feature the widely expected dual LED flash that a number of iPhone 5 rumours have suggested.

Whilst the leaked iPhone 5 camera components suggest there will be no second flash on the next-generation handset, compared to the iPhone 4 camera it does hint at reports of a thinner device ringing true sporting a noticeably slimmer, more compact form factor than its predecessor.

Recent reports had suggested the iPhone 5 camera will be of the 8-megapixel variety with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities. Other rumours have said the handset will have a 1GHz dual-core processor and land in the UK during September.

What features would you most like to see end up on the next-generation Apple handset, would a dual LED flash be up there? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PSN hacks have not deterred online gamers says expert

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:52 AM PDT

Gamers return to online play after recent PSN hacks caused a brief blip in online gaming

The PSN hacks that saw millions of PlayStation Network users lose their personal data earlier this year have not deterred gamers from online outlets, an industry expert has told T3.

Following the attacks on the Sony service earlier this year the head of the cloud-based gaming service OnLive has told T3 that despite an initial drop gamers have not been put off online offerings in the wake of the potentially devastating security breech.

“There’s been a drop off of PSN usage of course,” said OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman in an exclusive interview with T3. He added: “As far as we can tell from surveys, there’s been a steady growth since then, however.”

“I think people are more cautious, trying not to use the same passwords on the different sites and things like that. As far as online in particular we have seen rapid growth since our launch and there was no slow down or speed up.”

With the OnLive UK release date set for September 22nd, Perlman was keen to stress than users of the cloud-gaming outlet could not be hit by hacks in the same way as the PSN attacks. He said: “OnLive is structured differently, if someone did break into OnLive, the only thing they could steal is your high score.”

Did the PSN hacks put you off returning to Sony’s online gaming service? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone app news: Apple working on karaoke app

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Apple would like to teach the world to see.

Apple has successfully filed for a patent to bring a singing tuition app to the iPhone.

The so-called iKaraoke application would help users perfect their vocal talents, by pointing out mistakes and offering advice on how to bring songs back to the correct pitch.

The Guitar Hero-like system will follow your vocals and reward you for singing at the correct pitch with a 'concert hall effect', however mistakes will be exaggerated to make them sound even worse.

There's also auto-tune technology built into the patent application, which will make off-key warblers sound half-decent.

As yet, the application appears to still be in the conception stage, so we don't expect to see this it any time soon, but anything that lets us do karaoke more often has to be a good thing.

HTC better than Apple say T3 readers

We asked you who makes the best smartphone's and you responded loud and clear, while it was a close call, HTC has come out top trumps

Every week we bring you a question relating to the months top tech topics and ask you, the readers, to let us know what you think. This week saw one of the big questions being asked: Who makes the best smartphones. You've voted, and at the time of writing it is HTC that has been crowned victorious, beating off Apple and the iPhone 4 and Samsung and the Galaxy S 2.

Taking 30 per cent or 441 votes HTC has managed to win the majority over its rivals, no doubt with their HTC Sensation, HTC Desire HD and the upcoming HTC EVO 3D all taking some responsibility for winning your votes. Apple came a close second with 28 per cent while Samsung was relegated to third place taking just 21 per cent.

Despite the upcoming release of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the new BlackBerry Torch RIM was only able to grab just seven per cent of the votes being beaten to the post by Sony Ericsson.

Zumba Fitness makes it 10 weeks atop UK gaming charts

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:50 AM PDT

Zumba Fitness fights off competition from Cars 2 and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean to top UK All Format Gaming Charts

In a slow week for releases dance-based exercise game Zumba Fitness has made it ten straight weeks atop the UK All Format Gaming Charts.

Whilst many of the eagerly awaited upcoming titles were given an early run out at GamesCom last week few top releases made it to shelves allowing Zumba Fitness to retain its spot as the UK’s highest selling game despite an 18 per cent drop in sales.

Following 505 Games’ Zumba Fitness onto the podium of all format games for the past seven days LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean once again fought off competition from fellow movie tie-in Cars 2.

Capitalising from the recent 3DS price cuts The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D rose from 13th to fourth in the charts ahead of FIFA 12, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and Xenoblade Chronicles in spots five through seven respectively. DiRT 3, Brink and LA Noire completed the week’s top ten titles.

Top ten Android apps take 43 per cent of usage

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:24 AM PDT

Statistics have shown that despite catching up with Apple's App Store, the Android Market may not be as diversely used as expected.

Tech research company Neilsen has found that the top ten apps on the Android Market accounts for 43 per cent of usage, while the top 50 accounts for 61 per cent.

Considering the Android Market has around 250,000 apps available it's certainly a daunting statistic for those 249,950 apps that will have to compete for just 39 per cent of app usage. The report suggests that on top of those figures, those apps will also be competing for time spent using their applications as the average Android user spends only 56minutes using apps a day.

While it must be worrying for prospective app-builders to be facing such odds, it's important to remember that many apps will be used for social media, thus limiting their relevance and shortening the options available to them greatly. What would be interesting to see is if the same study was carried out on Apple's App Store.

What top apps do you used for Android? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Xbox 720 release date to overlap Xbox 360 lifecycle

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:22 AM PDT

Xbox 720 release date to precede Xbox 360 culling

With Nintendo set to launch its next-generation console in 2012, Microsoft’s European head of Xbox has suggested the Xbox 720 release date could come sooner than expected.

Despite repeatedly speaking of a ten-year lifecycle plan for the current Xbox 360 console Microsoft’s European head of Xbox, Chris Lewis, has said that the company’s next-generation console could overlap with its predecessor.

"We think we're a little over halfway with the life cycle of the console, but that's not to say there won't be an overlap," said Lewis on the Xbox 360 which launched in 2005 and its eventual replacement.

"I'm not going to announce specifically or talk about timing but you could imagine there could be overlap, it depends. We're not being specific about the next generation at this stage. We're very fixated on what we're doing right now and the success we're enjoying."

Is an Xbox 360 replacement urgently needed or is the current console still more than satisfactory? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung: "Something big is coming" at IFA 2011

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 01:14 AM PDT

Mobile and tablet launches for Samsung at IFA?

IFA 2011 in Berling is just 11 days away, and Samsung are teasing us with two new videos promising "something big."

The first video is the sort of arty promo we've grudgingly come to expect in this day and age - smiling faces, crashing waves, sun filtering through trees and, of course, not a single shot of any tasty new gadgetry - and reveals nary a hint of what Samsung has in store. Unless it's opening a Club Med.

The second video is a little more revealing, showing more happy young people, but this time holding brightly glowing balls of light in distinctly tablet- and mobile-like manners. So, a tablet and a mobile launch at IFA for Samsung, then? Take a look at the videos below and decide for yourself.

iPhone 5 to have 4G LTE technology?

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:36 AM PDT

Apple reportedly considering 4G connection speeds for next gen iPhone.

We're hearing further rumours about the upcoming iPhone 5; this time that Apple might be sneaking 4G onto the handset for faster data speeds.

According to PCWorld.com, the signs are building up, with reference to 4G technology made in the code of iOS 5, carriers testing 4G-enabled iPhone prototypes, and Apple's hiring of 4G network engineers to outfit one of its Apple Stores.

4G is the next generation of mobile phone technology, which largely brings with it the promise of faster data speeds. Currently, smartphones and web tablets connect to the internet using 3G, the technology that brought us proper mobile web browsing and video calling. 4G, by comparison, will allow download speeds of, in practice, somewhere between 20 and 50 Mbps, making it several times faster than the UK's average web connection.

However, 4G networks are still in their infancy, and while the technology is rolling out across the US, we won't see 4G in the UK for a while, making all the benefits 4G might bring to the next iPhone pretty well lost on us. One for the iPhone 6, we reckon.

UK's slowest broadband towns revealed

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:07 AM PDT

Slowest broadband spots discovered in the South East.

The results are in and it's bad news for the people of Cranbrook in Kent. In a recent study by price comparison site uSwitch, the 7000-resident town took the dubious honour of having the slowest broadband speeds in the country, trudging into last place with a measly 1.32 Mbps download speed.

Cranbrook wasn't alone in its failings, as between them the counties of Kent and Sussex are home to six of the country's 20 worst broadband speeds: Cranbrook, Ashford and Dover in Kent, Hastings Lavant and Pullborough in Sussex. Each of these towns' residents chug through the web at below 2 Mbps, while the UK average is around 7.5.

These findings come around a week after the UK government announced its plans to roll out improved broadband to rural areas in the coming months, with a whopping £362 million being spent on bringing the countryside up to speed.

However, an average connection speed of 7.5 Mbps makes the UK one of the slowest internet connections in Western Europe, behind France with 18 Mbps, Finland with 22 Mbps, and directly on par with Poland. Outside of Europe, South Korea takes second place in world internet speeds with 46 Mbps, while Japan, unsurprisingly, leads the world with an average download speed of 61 Mbps - eight-and-a-half times as quick as here in Blighty.

HP "not walking away from webOS" says HP VP

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 11:39 PM PDT

webOS will continue, possibly licensed to other companies.

While it was made official last week that HP would no longer be producing its lines of webOS devices (including the Pre mobile phone and the TouchPad tablet), the company has said publically that webOS will live on, at least for the immediate future.

Speaking after a meeting with employees at the webOS Global Business Unit of HP, webOS Vice President Stepehen DeWitt said several times that HP would not "walk away" from the mobile operating system, and that a roadmap for the future of webOS would be available in the next couple of weeks. "Clearly, we don't have all the answers yet." He said.

One option that is being discussed online is possibly licensing webOS to other mobile manufacturers. HP Vice President Tom Bradley commented on the rumours, saying only that webOS is currently only designed to work with Qualcomm chipsets, and that that would have to change were webOS to roll out on many other current handsets. Whether that's part of DeWitt's planned roadmap isn't clear.

While DeWitt said that there would be some staff layoffs following the discontinuation of its hardware line, webOS will march on, and that HP needed "people who are serious about winning." We know a guy.

Tech Today: HP TouchPad fire sale, RIM worth $25bn

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:05 PM PDT

HP starts selling TouchPad on the cheap and Hitler comments on the demise. Skype makes a big acquisition and analysts put a price on RIM.

HP starts TouchPad fire sale
Well that didn't take long. The webOS rummage sale has begun. Best Buy stores in the US have begun selling the HP TouchPad tablet for as little as $99; that's £60 in real money. One the inventory has gone, that'll be it. Unfortunately both Best Buy UK and Dixons are still listing the TouchPad at full price. HP has pledged to refund anyone who splashed out on a tablet.

Meanwhile, Hitler isn't best pleased by the demise of webOS...

Skype buys GroupMe messaging service
The smartphone group messaging service GroupMe, has been acquired by fellow IM service Skype for an undisclosed amount. Skype will keep the service, which allows phone conferencing and group texting, running as a separate entity. The announcement comes only months after Skype agreed in principal to sell-up to Microsoft.

Google Street View cameras head to the Amazon
The world's largest rainforest is currently being mapped by the Google Street View cameras. Google has dispatched teams on bikes and boats to explore the area and bring the footage to our desktop for the first time. The length of the project is yet to be determined.

If Motorola is worth $12.5 billion...
Then any sale of RIM would be worth $25 billion, according to industry analysts Morgan Keegan. Google made the headlines last week by acquiring Moto, but if the BlackBerry-maker were to cash in its chips then they could expect to bring in double that.

Facebook 'penetrated' by UK hacker, court hears

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 02:50 AM PDT

Facebook hacker without a FB profile?

A 25-year-old student hacker successfully 'penetrated' Facebook, a court heard, to illegally access its programmes.

Said to be the first case of its kind in Britain, Glenn Steven Mangham from York, faces five charges under the Computer Misuse Act. He does not appear to have his own Facebook account.

Among the charges faced are that he "made, adapted, supplied or offered to supply" a computer program to hack into a Facebook server, Westminster magistrates’ court heard.

The social networking site has more than 750 million members worldwide.

Matthew McCabe, prosecuting, told the court: "This is what can be described as a hacking case."
